Between the toys and the cereals (among other things), the 80s was definitely one of the best times for being a kid. Thanks for the nostalgia and fun trip down memory lane, definitely wouldn't mind going back, even for just a day... 😊
One correction: typically there weren't ads during the actual show for the toys for that property - at least Hasbro didn't do that. They advertised Transformers during GI Joe and GI Joe during Transformers (the exception was the ads for the Marvel comics which always promoted some toy). The problem was Barbie advertised during Jem, and My Little Pony was aimed at a younger audience than Jem - so it's one of the major reasons Jem failed. There wasn't a show to advertise the toys on. During the 2nd season, Jem was actually the #1 in Nielson ratings for both boys and girls - but it didn't result in selling Jem dolls, but Barbie dolls.
One strategy that a lot of cereal companies did during the great sugar scare was to change the name of their cereals from Sugar to Honey. Of course I doubt many of them had any actual honey.
Most curious. In Chile, traditional breakfast is milk tea/coffee with a sandwich (or plain bread in lean times), and maybe a fruit. ""Cereals"" were unknown in the 70s, oats were a novelty. Inflated rice and corn appeared first, as a snack. The sugary stuffs were introduced in the 80s, with the local advertising pressing on their vitamins content! 🤣 Still, not really filling in comparison to a sandwich made in the Chilean bread called marraqueta; we aren't talking about 2 sad Wonder Bread slices here, but of a thing like 2 bagels. Even plain, is a meal. Nowadays they are still there, and I presume some families give them to their kids by the side of the sandwich, but by law, mascots are forbidden, and black stamps signal the ones with excess of sugar, salt (or fats, in other foodstuffs).
As a 90s kid I grew up with fun processed foods and snacks. My breakfast was usually a sugary cereal or pop tarts. That stuff was fun and tasty as a kid and it’s all nostalgic to me as an adult. Today I can’t stand those foods. I feel so bad eating a few bites. I love my eggs, vegetables, milk, and coffee for breakfast now. Much more satisfying!

I forget just how far back a lot of our big name brands go, it's crazy! Isn't general mills or kellogs currently being threatened by the FDA because of how much sugar they have in their cereal along with false advertising? Yeah, I can't really eat these cereals anymore, cereal is hardly a breakfast for me now, but it was great watching the history. I love your channel, really brought back some memories even if I was born in 96. If I'm ever in the mood for cereal, luckily there are healthier (or organic) options that do mimic the taste of the sugary options. I guess that's a cool thing about the evolution of food.
My family was so poor that we had cereals that only qualified for WIC. That meant lots of KIX, plain Rice Krispies, plain Cheerios, Corn Chex and Corn Flakes. I actually have a collection of flattened boxes from this era. Some of them are worth hundreds of nickels. (Although I think my "Breakfast with Barbie" box might actually be worth re-evaluating.) And while branded cereals were certainly huge in the 1980s, those of us of a certain age remember that the 70s had some craziness as well. I still fondly remember when you could cut-out a playable Bobby Sherman record printed on the box.

Btw, I used to assume I had a predisposed genetic love for sugar but maybe it was all these damn cereals that were to blame 🤣
Still can’t stop laughing about the funny faces and actions of Kellogg and co. at the beginning. 😂 Remiinded me of good old Monty Python’s Flying Circus. I only know about 10% of these cereals, maybe because I grew up in Europe. My favorites used to be Rice Krispies which are no longer sold here. I also liked Smacks with the frog mascot.

Nowadays you barely see any cereal commercials unless its really mainstream like Lucky Charms or, Froot Loops, and Cap'n Crunch, and even those are barely advertised anymore.
I was on the road a *LOT* in the 80's and 90's, so breakfast was more than likely an egg mcmuffin or croissant sandwich from McD's or BK. Now when I go for breakfast cereal, I find I go for things like Frosted Mini-Wheats, Life, Frosted Flakes, etc. Still don't like the real sugary cereals....
For me it was Rice Krispies I remember as a kid having my ear right over the bowl so I didn't miss the snap crackle and pop. I never did hear that snap, darn you snap darn you to heck 😂😂
Today, there are no toys in the cereal boxes. The best part was that unless you had a brother or sister who wanted the toy. Smh. Also, cool part were actually boxes they were fun to read the back of the boxes. Besides, at times, they had fun activities on the boxes. Thank you for some what cover this topic. i did ask for it, but mine was speaking on toys inside the box. I honestly want to why they stop putting toys in the boxes?
I always wanted to try "Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs" from Calvin and Hobbes, but Bill Watterson notoriously refused any licensing for the characters.
Another great video. Technically Kellogg was right about high carb diets making you not want to have sex. Last time I was on a low fat diet my Depression was at its worst. Chuck Roasts continue to be a diet staple for me now thanks for instant pot pressure cooking in 1.5 hours to fall apart meat 😋 I grew up a fat kid and have tried every sugary cereal there is, but Frosted Flakes never get old.
0:01 Fruity Pebbles is the ultimate Saturday Morning Cartoon cereal. Not only is it sugary and colorful, but The Flintstones have a long history of cartoons on Saturday morning.
@@monkeygraborange It wasnt that bad back them. Kids were actually "active", by GOINg OUTSIDE and play, it was easy to burn off those calories; I ate fine and healthy and very active with a lot of friends playing, and i liked these type of sugary cereals and sodas... Not like today.. when you see some these kids being sheltered by the "left", its why they make fun of them, to go out and touch grass. SOme of these hippy organic crowd on the left loves to demonize food, as they were suckered into that mlm scheme of organic food. Its called "moderation", you can eat anything just fine, just keep your calories in checked, its not that hard seriously.. Only rreal problem is when people think they require that they have to eat 3 times a day.. breakfast, lunch, dinner.. THose 3 sessions can easily surpass 3000++ calories if people are that gullible to think they need to eat that much.
Waking up early on Saturday mornings to watch hours of cartoons with a bowl of cereal was the best! Second only to coming home from school to the Disney Afternoon.
Fruit loops used to be so good in the early 2000s because they still had sugar sprinkled on them. Now, they taste awful since they decreased the sugar content in cereal
This is funny, nostalgic and informative! I used to love the cereal aisle when I was a child in the mid 1980's and early 1990's all those cool cereals and prizes they would include in the box was awesome to me!
Here in Argentina breakfast cereal isn't as popular as in the U.S. but I remember eating Zucaritas (which is how Frosted Flakes are called in Latin America, since Tony the Tiger was on the box). However, in the last few years there's been some concerns about the amount of unhealthy ingredients found in most foods and, as way to combat childhood obesity, companies have forced to remove cartoon mascot from their packaging, so no more Tony, Chester Cheetah or the Trix Rabbit, though it varies from country to country. And in countries like Mexico and Argentina food packaging now has to include big octagons that indicate that a product has an excessive amount of sugar, fats or sodium
The irony of that is that the animated TV show it was based on only ran for three seasons. I thought they discontinued it when the show went off the air. Nowadays, they actually merchandise live-action TV shows ostensibly aimed at adults similarly, because now I see *Golden Girls* candy when I never used to see merchandise for that show and it was on the air. Could a cheesecake-flavored breakfast cereal be far behind? Back then, the only sitcoms that got merchandise connected to them were aimed at children and families. *Cheers* was the exception although that was based on a real bar that turned into a tourist trap until Coupvid killed it, so there was a symbiotic relationship between the two.
Between the toys and the cereals (among other things), the 80s was definitely one of the best times for being a kid. Thanks for the nostalgia and fun trip down memory lane, definitely wouldn't mind going back, even for just a day... 😊

But RK never had a lot of sugar. Now, Fruity Pebbles were loaded.
They stopped because they just create more waste for the environment and parents don’t want what basically amounts to garbage all over the house.
I always wanted to try "Chocolate Frosted Sugar Bombs" from Calvin and Hobbes, but Bill Watterson notoriously refused any licensing for the characters.
We used to make Rice Krispy Treats (from Rice Crispies) and Chex Mix (from Chex Cereal), among many other popular recipes that used cereals.
That was the point. It is part of an ongoing war on male sexuality.
0:01 Fruity Pebbles is the ultimate Saturday Morning Cartoon cereal.
Not only is it sugary and colorful, but The Flintstones have a long history of cartoons on Saturday morning.
My favorite combo!
Oh hell yeah. I love the fruity pebbles. The only downside, is you.have to scarf them, unless you want to be left with a bowl of psychodelic mush.
It's absolutely fascinating how these cereals left a lasting legacy
Yes, a lasting legacy of obesity and incipient diabetes.
@@monkeygraborangeso? It’s our prerogative if we want to get fat or get healthy lol if we want sugary cereal then it’s not your concern lol
It is my fucking concern when the government lied through their teeth about the cause of obesity, and the teeth they lied through were false as well.
The 80's were the golden age for just about everything, movies, music, toys, and food.
January 1, 1990 was like Cinderella’s coach turning back into a pumpkin.
Yup!!!! It was a Great time to be a kid in the 80’s!!!!!🤗🤗🤗
@dutchplanderlinde8883nostalgia in a nutshell
@dutchplanderlinde8883 *hits blunt*
Lots of happy memories as a child. Morning Funnies was my favorite cereal.
Waking up early on Saturday mornings to watch hours of cartoons with a bowl of cereal was the best! Second only to coming home from school to the Disney Afternoon.
Man o man those were the days 😀
Cookie crisp and Cap'n Crunch with Crunch berries were my favorites.
Oh man. The Ghostbusters cereal was my life.
Have y’all not seen the cereal they make now?
Fruit loops used to be so good in the early 2000s because they still had sugar sprinkled on them. Now, they taste awful since they decreased the sugar content in cereal
This is funny, nostalgic and informative! I used to love the cereal aisle when I was a child in the mid 1980's and early 1990's all those cool cereals and prizes they would include in the box was awesome to me!
God seeing some these commercials from the 80s are unlocking deep memories
Bruh that is only 40% true
Mr T cereal lasted for about 9 years - because it was honestly really good and better than Cap'n Crunch.
It tasted like Cap N Crunch with Molasses Flavoring. It was VERY Good.
I loved LOVED strawberry short cake as a kid. My favorite cereal
Are Ralston Purina cereals technically Kiddie Chow?
I actually agree with this... If you don't want your kid to eat or buy something, don't. The TV is not your parent
Exactly!!!!!!!!!!!!
