@@has489 I am not educated on the combat at hand specifically but if someone told me I had to ride a horse through the front line I'd definately not want to fall off so that's the only reason I can see keeping my sword concealed and no lance

"Also it was settled among the said French that every one should shorten his lance, in order that they might be stiffer when it came to fighting at close quarters." -Jean de Wavrin
@@marcuscole3679 I am no expert either but let me tell you what I have learned. "the spear" was the primary weapon for war for most of human history in almost every culture. The Lance or any kind of polearm was the primary weapon in this period. Swords were sidearms and were not used as you imagine them to be. The modern equivalent would be to drop you rifle and use your pistol instead.

Watched it yesterday for the first time. Now one of my favorite medieval movies of all time. The three f words dont really belong in the movie and felt unnatural due to the rest of the movies dialogue.
One of netflix finest along with beasts of no nation. It was brilliantly shot and great acting too

Sean Kilburn highly disagree. Camerawork was great, acting was amazing, and the movie itself was relatively historically accurate with a few bits fudged to make the movie not as clunky.
The actors are straight white males. The odds are not in their favor.

Not bad, but there is a lot of historical inaccuracy in this movie: costumes-scenery (too dark, too colorless, too much Game of Thrones etc.), events (okay, partly because it was based on Shakespeare's work.), and the battle (too chaotic, too mass, no lances and stakes, etc.) and the siege (very minimalistic; Harfleur is a port city, not a castle; no guns, no mining, etc.) is not authentic either. If they could shoot a similar series after such an inaccurate movie, they would rather not do it... I don't want Game of Thrones, I don't want fantasy, I want some degree of reality, not this...

Timothée Chalamet performance in this film is absolutely hypnotizing. Every thing from his eyes to his body movement told a story very few actors can achieve. What a brilliant young man.

Timothée Chalamet my favorite young actor there’s so many young talented actors out there who are big in the industry but Timothée got nominated for an Oscar at 21 years old... that’s completely insane so much respect for him he invests so much into a character honestly can’t wait to see him grow as an actor love all his movies

@@44r0n-9 the Last Kingdom is way way earlier, during the Viking age, this film takes place in the 1400s about, 500 years or so after the Last Kingdom takes place. Although the Last Kingdom is an amazing watch, what he is asking for is a series that takes place much much later on. Something with realistic battles too much like this. The real issue is as shown in this video, battles take a long time to film, especially the more realistic, grounded ones like this.

@@44r0n-9 Again, Last Kingdom is the viking age, only about 200/150 years after Charlemagne's time, it is incredibly, incredibly early middle ages. And yes you are correct. He says medieval series, thinking Plate Armour, Knights, etc. By that point sadly there were no vikings left lol, pretty much all of Europe was christian and the real enemy were the Turks and Islam to the east. It could be interesting if somebody did ever maybe make a series based in say, 1300 - 1400 ish. Plenty of material to work with.
This movie was absolutely fantastic and Timothée Chalamet's performance was excellent, which has just made me that much more excited for the upcoming Dune movie where he is taking the lead role. Its gonna be brilliant!
By far my favourite period piece film of all time. The people who were a part of putting this film together are nothing short of legends. Good job.
At the Battle of Agincourt, it's estimated the English and Welsh archers put 1000 arrows into the air EVERY SECOND of volley fire.

@@jimmy5391 what if the archers carried more then their usual load of arrows because they were told the majority of the fighting force would not wear armor fighting an enemy wearing armor?...ill pretty ignorant of Medieval warfare/history so I'm genuinely asking. I find that battle very interesting.
@@jimmy5391 Englands main weapon at this time period were the English Longbow because it could shoot further than anything else. Archers, especially English bowmen, usually had thousands upon thousands of arrows in reserve. Now I doubt it was 1000 arrows in the air every second, but it was most definitely 1000+ arrows in the air each volley which is basically like dodging rain at that point.
@@luketheduke173 Archers made just under 80 percent of Henry's army, 7000 longbowmen. And an experienced longbowman could draw aim and fire an arrow every 5 seconds.
That shot is the same as Jon's in the Battle of the Bastards.

There is a lot more of King Henry V story to tell like surviving an arrow through the skull & surviving. A sequel for sure.

Too dark, too colorless, too simple. The reality was different.

There are many stereotypes about the Middle Ages...
they took creative liberty for the battle of agincourt and did well for what they did - they portrayed plate armour well, by showing how plated soldiers can give erratic and rapid movements (i remember distinctly a scene where a soldier is repeatedly smashing a dude in the head with a horsepick) and also showing how the plate mixed with the muddy field played into france’s defeat.

I've read about Agincourt all my life and was thrilled to hear that a movie about this grand moment of longbow technology overthrowing medieval armor technology. Instead I got another Braveheart melee madhouse that was thrilling in its intensity but really downplayed the archer contribution.
George Prince Yeah, I wanted the full effect of the archers’ arrows basically darkening the skies... and a constant shot of them just non stop sending them towards the French army. Still a good movie but definitely needed more archery recognition. Those longbows were the best.
Indeed, I was frustrated by the inaccurate generic melee as well.
At least they explained it a little in the Netflix history featurette
I hate how the melee is depicted in this movie. It's Vikings TV all over again. I'm so tired of seeing the same old hollywood trope in all medieval movies...

The scene is awesome, but how they know, who is the enemy? Like all in armor looks the same for me.
in reality they would have been wearing a coat of arms / tabbard over their armour . or via the heraldry on their shields
Actually in historical times they had the blue Fleur de Lys as a tabard for the French and the red three lions for the English.
Also battles weren't always as chaotic to the point of free for all battles. There were times that the lines held and soldiers in battle knew which direction the enemy were.
In Agincourt, the English dismounted knights had it very easy against the French dismounted knights as they had to wade through a hailstorm of longbow fire and the sheer mass of heavy infantry that surged forward became a huge traffic jam of French crushing each other to death. So much so the English archers then joined in the melee to kill off the stranded French.
In fact there could be more French killing their own Frenchmen than the English because they were literally trampling each other in heavy armor and the bodies piled high
Honestly this was one of the better Netflix movies. If we get more of this quality I'm fine with it.
This is my favorite movie by far. I've watched it 3 times now. I have no idea what it is but it is just such a good movie. Probably doesn't help that I love Shakespeare's Henry the V. Still mad about them not doing the st. Crispin's day speech. But by god. I love this goddamn movie.
Please make more of these videos where the makers analyse and go into the process of creating a scene/sequence/story. I love these and they are such an amazing way to learn more intricate details about storytelling from the creators themselves!

Weird that they didn't include the wooden pikes that the archers had in front of them. What's preventing the cav from just doing one charge around the inf to slaughter the archers?
What's even weirder is that you see them preparing the pikes before the battle. They're literally piled up waiting ot be used lmao

There was nearly nothing historical about this battle in this movie:
1) no pikes set up.
2) Henry V was on high ground... they shot it as if they're on low ground.
3) Archer placements were to the left and right flanks in the wooden area and on higher ground. Movie depicts archers incorrectly at the center. And reversing the king at the flanks, when the king was at the center. Completely backwards.
4) Archers fired direct, not at some goofy arch rendering their arrows with too little force to even puncture muscle let alone any type of armor.
And in this battle: once the archers ran out of arrows they took hatchets and whatever weapons they had and ran into the slopping mud to take out the French Men at arms who were weighed down in the mud slipping and falling in their armor.
5) The French prince was not at this battle, and that particular French prince depicted in the movie died a few days after the battle of dysentery.
6) The top French commander at this battle was general Boucicaut
7) Boucicaut and other noble lords of their respective divisions were taken capture, and were not murdered, only the lower lesser nobility and non-nobility were to be at first, put to death; the number of murdered prisoners isn't known, as most of the lower orders had fled, his own nobility felt it was unchivalrous to carry out the order, and King Henry V rescinded the order shortly after declaring it.
8) The attack sequence was: The French general Boucicaut lost control of his divisions; due to English taunting the first wave was fully armored knights on horse back.
Second French wave was dismounted knights advanced, but in the choke point, they just hindered the ability for the first line to maneuver.
9) King Henry V was wearing a helm with a crown circlet... his placement was a the center, not at the flanks as depicted in the movies; reports state he did fight.
10) A piece of the circlet crown was knocked off the King's helm by an enemy soldier while the King was standing over and protecting his cousin Humphrey of Lancaster, Duke of Gloucester who had been injured.

I was watching this scene and thinking. Of all the movies I've seen, I have never seen a battle with whole armies in full suits of armor. What a spectacle.
This is simply the best film i have ever seen (and score i have ever heard). Ive never once watched a movie repeatedly over and over until now. If this doesnt win best picture, im done with the academy.

One of the best and most realistic battle scene I saw. Even the early duel fight scene was fantastic.
It's ridiculous when people who do not study history see a medieval movie and think this is how battles looked like. It is far from realistic. There is nothing realistic about it when two armed mobs suicidaly run into each other and continue hacking and slashing each other in an unorderly mess.
It's a hollywood trope.
People fought in formations and battle-lines. Casualties weren't so high until one side broke and started fleeing.
ᚲᚨᚢᛚᛞᚱᛟᚾ ᛃᛟᛏᛁ dude the movie wasn’t historically accurate but the battle was completely realistic, many times in history regiments were used as bait. Formations commonly were forgotten about in the middle of a battle. Knights absolutely used their fists, knees, elbows and knives. And the battle did portrait how much of a fuckfest the real battle was. The only thing the movie didn’t do justice was to the longbow men who practically won the battle by them selves.

Medieval battles and even modern engagements show one thing - when two armed mobs engaged, they are always keeping together and there is a battle-line in the front, where the battle takes place. Usually the first row or the first two ranks are fighting, while those behind are throwing projectiles, waiting to switch the ones in the front. It's dynamics of mass combat and it's real.
We even have medieval authors who describe the very same thing in their chronicles. Even in Azincourt were still two distinct sides, one packed in tight together in a single mass with only the outer edges able to use their weapons (the Monk of St-Denis says the first two ranks, Monstrelet, Waurin and Le Févre say just the first), and the other surrounding it, not packed tightly together and able to use their weapons freely.
And don't get me even started about the dumb-ass tactis involved in this movie. The cavalry completely ignores the archers in the back who are completely undefended. The French cavalries make the same mistake and engage into the same mud again.
This movie depiction of battles where soliders just chaotically and suicidally run around the battle-field with no sense of tactics and survival is just a silly movie trope, nothing else.

Honestly, even if the film did have questionable armour and had the battle not fully faithful to its real-life counterpart the battle scene and the movie were excellently executed.
Movies with knights and kings typically bore me but this movie had me into it pretty much immediately, performances were great and it was an epic story. Netflix if you keep pumping out garbage and cancelling your good shows (bojack horseman) these other streaming services are going to make you obsolete. Please, give me more of this.

This is a pretty nice movie. I really appreciated the fight scenes. When I learned about WW1 an emphasis was made on the impact MUD had for ALL troops. I think this is something we as the audience dont necessarily think about, especially considering most of us probably haven't fought in trenches or medieval battles. Details like this really add to the experience, so I appreciate that being shown here. Also, that camera shot at 4:51 I really enjoyed

Hoddedman what are you talking about? The battle of Agincourt was pretty much a giant clusterfuck as shown. All that’s missing is the spikes the French horses ran through that protected the archers and English lines.

Joel and ‘good looking Charlie Day’ 😜 did a fabulous job with this film. Thoroughly entertaining and didn’t drag as many period pieces can.

Frenetic is how I would describe the combat in this movie. In the modus of the Saving private Ryan Omaha beach scene. Unrelenting exhausting and personal. You find yourself drawn to the front line and there is no escaping it now. Beautifully written, phenomenally acted and masterfully directed.

First of all Thank you Netflix for making this movie- I Love it. But I went to LFF to see it on the big screen, since it was not (or only rather selected e.g. nowhere in and around a film-attached City like Cologne ) in theaters in Germany and this is where a movie like this belongs - at least for some Time.
