14 years later : just dropped in to say, what a beautiful video. In every way. The ladies voice, the music, the kayak, the lovely presence... & again that kayak❤
I was on a course of her and it was awesome and their was people that was 50+ that could roll.... The most people had regular touring/sea kayaks and they rolled that way. And it do work in harder conditions, she also shows forward finishing roll/storm roll...
Really nicely filmed and demonstrated and explained. The only issue I have with this is that most touring kayaks don't allow anywhere near that degree of lie-back, which changes the mechanics of the roll quite a bit. The 'average' boat is much wider, the back of the cockpit is closer and higher, and the deck itself is higher. You can balance brace, but then there's a wide, high obstacle to finishing the roll smoothly since there's just no way to rotate cleanly onto the back deck.
Im not at the experience level of the rapids i live near but im curious, for my rocky rapids are any rolls better safer/ more dangerous than another in that environment? How do they keep from bashing their faces? Helmets protect the rest, sure. But the face
what is recovery side knee. i thought you were trying to recover from a capsize so you need to "recover" both sides. i CAN perform this roll(the only one i know) but i cant perform the balance brace
I use all elements described successfully with an Euro paddle and expedition kayaks. Form over power will always mean a better roll, even if equipment (wide/high) do not allow for as much 'textbook' position.
Danne461..I know someone that is 53 and a half..and he's just learnt to roll!..;-)(I think he can even use a knife and fork ..even dress himself too!!).;-))
WARNING - These rolls are advanced rolls requiring a great deal of flexibility. These rolls will not work in rough conditions or white water. Learn a sweep or screw roll if you want an effective and reliable roll :)
Recovery side (1 year later for anyone interested) is self-explanatory as the side you are aiming toward or saving or recovering yourself to. It is the side that is closest to safety. It would be the side that is closest to the sky & air & surface in the case of a tipped kayak. It is the side in which direction you ultimately are aiming to advance toward. Recovery side is the good side. The safe side. The light side. The dry side. Not to be confused with the submerged side. The drowned side. The in-trouble side. The compromised side. The side that is of little help... The Recovery side is the side that is going to save you. It is your friend. (It is also demonstrated in the kayakless frames in the vid, if you don't trust me. )
Why not simplify it and just teach flexible body positioning to correspond with simple sculling toward the surface while gently rolling up! Inuit style.

Can't believe how few views this has had , it's by far the most clear and simple video on greenland rolling I have watched 👏👏👏
You can't go wrong learning how to roll from Helen! on of the best rolling instructors out there!
You make it look so easy... thank you!
Excellent instruction. Best I have heard so far.
Beautiful video in every way !
Excellent video 👏

Great video. It's an advert for a full DVD just in case someone missed that.
Nice vídeo and nice músic !!
Low volume kayak, good for rolling. Great job.
I assume that you are using an empty boat. Is there one type of roll that is prefered when on a kayak trip with a full, and heavy boat?
Wow!
Great demonstrations for Greenland rolling. I think you should re-title this to "Simplifying Greenland Roll with Helen Wilson".

What's the name of that black kayak model?
Is that kayak made for places where the sun does not shine much?
NICE VIDEO 💯📸

Learn to not go over or recover fast before the water recedes.

Sorry, I didn't see it before, I'm glad you liked it. Good lack, Lalo.
Nice tutorial
OK!
Not many people can 'L' their body the way 'old Floppy Head' can. She has great lateral flexibility.
A slow steady one. It's all the same except sometimes rushed things don't work if your boat had 200 lbs of stuff added and you rush.
Wing paddle lol. Best paddle in windy condition etc. Learn how to use your paddle efficiently.
Good

What the hell is the "recovery side"? Never heard this expression before.

Greenland roll is Inuit style or pretty close. That's how you got rolling competitions in Iceland or where Inuits rolls.
That wouldn't work in rapids. It works. But I rather not have a rock rip my face off.
Nothing to worry about there. Things happen if it's meant to be.
They're not meant for rapids. This is open water/sea kayaking technique, originally used by Inuit kayakers.
