  • Here's a video on me removing the battery from my 2010 NCV3 Sprinter van. It's quite a cumbersome procedure which requires specific tools as shown in the video.

Remove the ground first. Always. If you hit the chassis with your wrench while touching the neg terminal, it does nothing. If you do it while touching the positive terminal and the neg terminal is still connected, you short the battery to chassis/ground and cause a serious surge that can damage your battery and/or vehicle electronics.
This is why you always remove the neg cable first.
But I do want to thank you for doing this video. It is quite ueseful for people who do not know where the battery on a mercedes sprinter actually is!

Thanks for the video, a couple of things though. You should always remove the negative first then then positive and then in reverse for connecting. It removes the chance of shorting anything if you happen to touch the positive cable to anything while the (black) negative connection is still connection.

Thank you for this. I'm converting my van into a camper and want to link my van battery to my leisure battery ( am planning ahead) so that when the van battery is full the charge can go to my leisure battery - but I couldn't find the van battery! When it wasn t under the bonnet I thought it would be under the driver's seat but no it wasn't there either. Now I shall go and say hello to my battery in the next couple of days. Many thanks.

We bought a used Thor small motorhome on a Sprinter chassis & have been searching for the house battery!! Thank you so much! Ours is located on the drivers side under the floor board like you said!! Great info!! Appreciate your video, don’t need to replace any battery’s yet but wanted to know where everything is located for the future!! Thanks again!!!!

Not bad at all, really, Thanks! Sparks narrowly averted by chance (as mentioned by Rick Crespo) and also a good thing that the van didn't lose its marbles when the battery was taken out. Some vehicles these days need a diagnostics computer to reset the vehicle's electronics if a backup battery isn't connected in parallel to the battery cables BEFORE removing the vehicle battery. Some Mercs have a seperate "systems" battery for this requirement.

Flipping heck, give the guy a break about the battery terminals, I found it very helpful (there are four batteries on my sprinter and I only found three till today!!)👍

any real mechanic would know to remove the negative post first to reduce sparking risk. this guy is removing a live positive terminal with a metal tool which he almost shorted out to the body

Nice video, but one thought. Never remove positive lead first because you can make short circut with car body.

Do you disconnect the connection that you state At about 2:09 second in first? If so when do you reconnect it after fitting your new battery?

ALWAYS disconnect the earth terminal first.
If not, any metal tool used on the positive (+) terminal, could short to surrounding earthed metalwork like the floor or seat box.
Apart from waking you up with a shower of sparks, it could destroy some of the sensitive electronics that modern vehicles are filled with, or even trigger the airbags.

My right hand drive, 2019 sprinter, due to unforeseen circumstances, fully drained the battery. I have a manual key to open the driver's door, but the passenger door won't unlock or open. Therefore I can't pop the Bonnet because the handle is impeded by the door. Poor design. Taking the battery out, home and recharging is the only choice.

Hi you must take the negative off first. The battery stores a large ampage. If you take the positive off first and the tool you use comes in contact with any bare metal part you will have a large flash and molten metal every where and possibly lose a digit or two. For gods sake every one take the negative off first !!!!!!!!
