    I remember being shown the Tacoma Narrows Suspension Bridge at my university engineering course. Mine was an Electrical and Electronic Engineering degree but in the first year we were exposed to Mechanical and Civil Engineering - including that video.
    I don't know what the others took away from it but I was astounded at the magnitude of the displacements before failure.

    I don't actually know the term 'aeroelastic flutter' (I'm not an engineer), but the reason it the bridge was able to oscillating like that is because the wind was driving it at it's resonant frequency

    I'll definitely experiment with the fade in effects, that's something I'll have time to fix. A lot of the clips aren't mine, particularly big bird's singing, it's why I don't have an add on this video, though I'm pretty sure most of it falls under fair use, and a lot of the images were found using creative commons searches. Thanks for the feedback.

    In our Society the concept of Energy is present in various forms linked to our daily life needs, while its origin can be seen from the investigation of various "Whys" inherent in the "Intimate Nature of the Universe", where, for example for the " Physics of Resonances", the Universe is seen as a great mind of which we represent one of the billions of its neurons, in which everything is in continuous evolutionary transformation, guided by a form of intrinsic Intelligence, where the path that nature takes to present us its geometric shapes would be simple if we considered atoms as spherical vortices with a central axis, but instead there are geometric realities that require a much deeper analysis, with which classical physics has dealt little. A useful means to enter into this vision of Science comes to us from the analysis of the geometric shapes of the Platonic Solids, which we also find present in three-dimensional wave formations, where each vertex point touches the surface of a sphere in the area where the vibrations coagulate and form a node, exactly as happens in a three-dimensional geometric image of vibration - pulsation. To the questions: what is the cause of the motion of the electrons, we observe that this motion is caused by some geometric law, because certain elements are more stable than others; we also note that they are all aspects of the magic of "symmetry" in action, where different geometric shapes can have similar properties, since they are all incorporated into each other, with harmonious relationships in continuous evolutionary transformation, which lead us to the various manifestations of Life Universal, which we are used to reading from the point of view of the effects, and not from the causes, with their various Whys, from which some questions arise, such as:
    Why was this Universe born, and what is it based on?
    Why are the Universe rules Analog and not Digital?
    Why is this Universe equipped with a form of Intrinsic Intelligence, which always leads to creating order from Chaos?
    Why does Space, in particular stimulus conditions, generate "condensed matter" which takes on the multiple geometric forms present in Universal Nature?
    Why is there an apparent Duality in this Universe and what does Polarity mean?
    Why can Biological life arise from condensed matter which under certain conditions can reach the state of Consciousness, which pushes us towards the need for the presence of an "entity" that transcends the Whole?
    The analysis of the many "Whys" open in the Intimate Nature of the Universe is useful to us in order to arrive, through our "Intuition", at the primary source of the concept of Universal Energy, and this approach on the way to deal with the acquisition of knowledge, could help us to have better behaviors towards ourselves, others, and the nature of which we are part, thus directing us also to identify innovative technological solutions, suitable for facing the challenges that our world imposes on us.

    If you're referring to the cover thumnail, that was just a graphic I made for the concept of resonance being a unifying concept in physics. In hindsight, perhaps a poor choice for the cover thumbnail, but I was proud of it as it was my first attempt at using image manipulation software. I should probably get around to changing it.

    It is very well done. It would be helpful to have your same voice stop the "Music" at the beginning of the video just after the one refrain and have your voice actually ask which one does not belong. I was honestly put off by the music. One refrain is of the choral line does the trick and is a propos. I would also qualify "studies show" to say what studies show...the imaging is suberb and the tone of your voice just right to get the message across. I love the end and the quip about the PhD. A+

    I would argue the 4 pics at the beginning, the father pushing his on the swing was the different one, considering the first 3 consisting of a force and the swing scenario consisting of a “non traditional” force as gravity is not a force in the way we perceive it. It can mathematically seem that way but gravity is no force, it is a property of one

    Well, since working in an underground sugar mine doesn't sound too appealing to me, I guess that I'll give you some feedback. 1.) I am not sure what editing software you are using but having a slight fade-in and fade-out on the pictures (Even if barely noticeable) would give the video a smoother feel. 2.) How much of the media that you used was copyrighted!? Lol 3.) Perhaps adding some very subtle background music would add to the video. (I use incomputech) 4.) I agree with the comment below.

    Common misconception about the Tacoma Narrows. Resonance played less of a role than aeroelastic fluttering (which caused the twisting motion). Minute physics did a great vid on this. The Tacoma Narrows Fallacy

    • @TheGentlemanPhysicis
      @TheGentlemanPhysicis  10 років тому

      I don't think I agree with Minute physic's take on it. I would argue that the aeroelastic fluttering is what's driving the resonance. If the fluttering weren't at the right frequency it wouldn't let the amplitude grow enough to break the bridge down.

    • @ghboehme
      @ghboehme 10 років тому

      The Gentleman Physicist
      But is that resonance or a result of the tension within the structure overcorrecting for the wind? I see it as the bridge twists, it gets more bite relative to the wind. This results in the wind exerting more pressure perpendicular to the rotational axis and increases the torsional tension in the bridge. As the tension grows it overcomes the wind pressure and, assisted by gravity, accelerates it back towards horizontal. That acceleration twists it further in the other direction, allowing the wind to get more bite, etc. etc.

    • @TheGentlemanPhysicis
      @TheGentlemanPhysicis  10 років тому

      The thing that makes me suspicious about that is that the if there's no resonance, then the wind should be dampening the twisting during half the swing.

    • @ghboehme
      @ghboehme 10 років тому

      But can you have resonance with a constant input? The wind was measured around 65km/hr and held constant (in as much as turbulent systems can) during the incident.

    • @lishlash3749
      @lishlash3749 8 років тому

      Of course you can, the resonant frequency (about 0.2hz) of the torsional oscillation was a property of the bridge, independent of the near-constant pressure of the windstream. While it may not have been a purely linear function, the torsional transfer function was clearly underdamped, and required only a strong enough source of energy to provoke it into self-destructive oscillation.

      Resonance didn't make the tacoma Narrows bridge collapse. It collapsed because of aeroelastic flutter. Grady (practical Engineering) did a segment about the bridge. ua-cam.com/video/mXTSnZgrfxM/v-deo.html

    I've been trying to find an explanation for why objects have specific resonant frequencies. Such as the wine glass. Why is that particular frequency the resonant frequency of that wine glass? Does it have to do with molecular structure? Wave interference patterns? Thank you

    • @TheGentlemanPhysicis
      @TheGentlemanPhysicis  9 років тому +3

      I think the 2 things that have the biggest impact are 1)The radius of the glass, that controls the wavelength of vibrations. 2) speed of sound in the glass, this different for different materials (and can depend on the structure of the glass). So glasses made of the same material will have different fundamental frequencies if they are different sizes.

    Why is that when Natural frequency is matched with forced one, maximum Amplitude is obtained? I mean why can't I simply give it a huge forced frequncy to get the maximum.
    I think, its because if we exceed natural frequency, for example the potential of a child swinging, the child may fall, so it sort of?
    please explain

    • @sahanavic7841
      @sahanavic7841 6 років тому

      You can provide the maximum amplitude all in one go, but it would require an enormous amount of power to deliver that energy in one burst. With resonance, that energy is provided in easy to manage instalments over a long period of time, so is more realistic.
