- Aimee Mann performed for President Obama and First lady on May 11th 2011 for Poetry Night at the White House. Aimee was joined by a prestigious cast of poets, musicians and artists to celebrate the art of American poetry. Additional artists' highlighting the significant influence of poetry on American culture included Billy Collins, Common, Rita Dove, Kenneth Goldsmith, Alison Knowles, Jill Scott, and Steve Martin and Steep Canyon Rangers.
Aimee also participated in an afternoon workshop for high school students from across the country. This is a clip of Aimee Singing Save Me at the afternoon workshop
This is wonderful. I'm glad she switched to acoustic guitar. Her songs are cool, & it's getting better with the passing of time. She's great.

I have been a HUGE FAN of Aimee Mann. I keep a copy of "The Forgotten Arm," one of the most beautiful set of songs put together in a long time. She is an amazing singer and songwriter who should be given a medal for her work. I am glad the Obama White house was able to do this. You know, under President Disrespect Women and everyone else, you are not going to see talent like this at all.
Dumpie might have gone so far to have Taco Night, forget about Poetry Night.. but he didn't even do that because he hated other people. It was just him and the Tacos :D

I think this song saved me. It really did. Funny how music does that sometimes.
I was thinking the same thing just now. I was diagnosed with borderline personality too many years ago and this song really helped me to move on.
I'm glad sh'e still around making music because a lot of 80's bands have long since called it quits. Although the former 'Till Tuesday group is indeed gone, Aimee is still at it and that's who we wanted to see and hear anyway :)
I was so very fortunate to see her at the Ark in Ann Arbor. Afterwards I was emotionally exhausted. Mentally and emotionally assured.
Ok people who didn't read the words - this is not "for" the President, you don't need to say that he is a narcissist or make any political comments if you just like the song. I just think it is very cool that someone put together a list of excellent performers to, as stated, "celebrate the art of American poetry". *And* that this is from "an afternoon workshop for high school students from across the country".... how you have a problem with that is just... it's sad. How cool that high school students are seeing a woman who has been making music since the early 1980s, that she plays instruments, writes and performs music. I would have loved seeing this when i was in high school, it's just good.
You miss the good things SO OFTEN while looking for something to be angry about. If you like Aimee and her music, yay. And just enjoy it.

Amy Lynn Hunt Right On! Good music (not just pop music) should be available for everyone (and that statement is being made knowing this song (or genre) is not everyone's taste).
All the other presidents, even the ones I didn't like used the people's house for events like this.

She is one of the greatest American songwriters ever. She just gets better as time moves on. I got to have a phone interview with her for a mag I was writing for at the time. It was early 90’s. She was still performing under ‘Til Tuesday. A good friend had introduced her post “Voices Carry” material to me and I was hooked. The best part of her career was still to come! I hope she continues to create great music, influencing new artists, and being an example of what great unique talent is.

You kidding Jeff Yeh? The mix is terrible. The backup vocals are too loud and the keys and bass are almost completely missing. There's more to music than the singer and their guitar.

Audio is crap. The only saving grace is the sound from that beautiful Hummingbird she is playing. I come back to listen to this version because it is sounds so bright and crisp.

They really did only have one hit, but their next two albums were awesome. Very folk-rock sounding. I wore out "everything's different now" in college and wore out "welcome home" in the army before that. Well worth getting if you have the chance. Check out songs like "coming up close" if you only have youtube access.
This song, though, is when she went solo. She's done great work on her own, including the Magnolia soundtrack.

She so deserved to win both the Grammy and Oscar for this song. What a travesty it was to see them handed elsewhere. 500 Years from now, if humanity has survived, this song will endure and no one will recall the slightest detail from those other "supposed" contenders.

I met Aimee once on the set of Magnolia while she was shooting the video for this song. We share a hometown, Midlothian, VA. For me, it was an "it's a small world" kind of feeling. Don't try to talk to her about home though. Too good for it. She's not very nice, in fact.
Those memories from VA probably weren't the best for her. She was picked on and bullied at school, never spoke, and probably suffered from social anxiety (and maybe stills suffers from social anxiety but seems to manage it OK). So VA probably doesn't invoke good memories for her, it's not because she is "too good" for it as you say....

Saw till Tuesday at the Empire in Phila, that Aimee left a lasting impression on me. I wish she pulled out the old diggs to perform for King Obama. I have no doubt she could still pull it off. They would have been hauling people out on a stretcher lol, especially the over medicated bag who looks like she ready to fall out of her chair. And as far as the glasses, why would she hide those beautiful eyes? I still love you anyway.

This may be too judgemental, but I lose respect for a person who isn't absolutely moved by this song, and with the exception of the one person, this seems to be an entire room of them. These are the kind of people who appreciate fine art, only after checking with experts and their friends to make sure that it's the sort of fine art that they should appreciate.
