- I went to visit the steam fair in Weston-Super-Mare and luckily had good weather. The staff were friendly and I was able to film some of the rides,so here is the Octopus.
It's one of the first rides I remember going on as a young lad.
Manufacturers: Lusse, Hayes Fabrications Début year: 1937 First UK produced: 1937 Last UK produced: 1968.
I managed to get some good footage when the sun was right, ground views and some slow motion, enjoy !

Now THAT is the true octopus! Used to ride that all the time at carnivals in the summer. Thanks for the up close shot of the mechanism. Interesting to see how really simple it is.
+seywhut2985 Thanks for popping in :)
I have to say that this is a beautiful version of this fabulous old ride. Every kid who studies physics should have to ride (or at least study) the Octopus and the Waltzer/Tilt-a-Whirl. I especially loved the beautiful paint job on the cars, the surround fence and the classy cover on the lower part of the center mechanism. Mesmerizing movement! I recall there was one in the carnival scene at the end of the film "Grease."
I miss these classic rides 😢 The Octopus and Spider, Tilt a whirl , Scrambler, Zipper and the Rock o Planes
Such a classic ride and sooo scary as a kid!
This and the dive bomber are my favourite rides as a kid , such classics I’d buy both rides just to put in garden and stare at them all day 😎
They can keep all the new hi-tech rides. The octopus and the waltzer are the best funfair rides of all time. Shame we don't often see the octopus nowadays. Cracking video!
Thank you :) Glad you enjoyed it.
This used to be one of my favorites, and the video you captured totally just brought back all the memories of why I loved it. If your video makes me sick, I know the ride would, but regardless thanks for the flashback!
I loved the octopus as a kid. That ride looks sooooo fun.
George Scarrott bought this classic in the early 1970s, Scarrotts still have it along with a few classic trucks. I remember this as a child in the 1980s when Scarrotts fair came every year to Fairfield Wootton Bassett, Fantastic to see it again as now I live up North, you can't beat the old classics, when I was a kid the ride had white lights at the centre part, think they were old car spot lights.
Oh the memories ❤️
Carters came to Wooburn Green, Bucks every year- we loved it- our best ever record was 8 rides without getting off with no effects!! Had a get together in the Steps pub there as adults and challenge my friends to ride it again- OH DEAR- I felt sick after a few minutes-how the body changes!
Born in Wooburn Green and proud to be a Woobo!
Same here !
Thanks for the memories!
The Spider, Octopus & Monster are my three favorite Eyerly rides.
A better sensation than a twenty million dollar coaster.
So much fun as a kid, I’d give it a go again pushing 60
@mesmoland yay i love yours vids mesmo im glad you made a new one!!!!
''my brains going round'' that's is your catch phrase perhaps you've said it a number of times very funny indeed!
I have always wondered what it's like to ride one of these I'm sure if you are alright then I'll be alright as I can ride just about anything (or so I presume). I've been on a mondial capriolo!
Great onride video so thanks as I'm yet to get myself to ride Carters full line up!
Nice pov

All time fav ride. Here in the U.S. It seems to have disappeared from parks.
Jess4metoo theres 0ne left in a carnival im going on next week
Jess4metoo we have it every other year or so at our carnival here in Payette,Idaho
Oh God! that is so harshly fast deymm. Here in Philippines it's slow and not that high as that but still i felt scared. how much more this one my God 😱😱😱😱
A decent ride that actually lasts for more then 3 minutes
I quite liked it (:
Though I said to myself "I liked the octopus, so I'll like hi-energy!" I fainted and cried on hi-energy. Ok..
I have been to Carters Fairs a couple of times and you do get long rides
I came here because the fair in my town starts today and we just got this ride for the first time. We still have the Fire Ball (also known as Ring of Fire) witch I'm going on with a few friends.
Does the octopus go higher and feel different than spider ride?
This looks so much faster when your on it then when ur looking at it off ride just like a twirl a wirl
I wish Carter's were in the States. All we have are those curvy armed models that don't have the same ride IMO.
One of my favorite rides, but it should only run for 90 to 120 seconds.
This ones my fave..
@chicagofrank2010 thank you, that makes it all worth while : )
for tall people this bloody hurts your thighs! still amazing fun though.
Well I’m 11 and 5,3 so in a couple years this won’t be fun
gave me heartattack :(
That was jusr GR8 I like to turn off the lights and watch in full screen. It feels like your really there.
@jimstaraghee it's a good ride.
i should try that someday
Que buen vídeo
Try it out it's a good ride,if they don't leave it on too long.
mesmoland one complaint i have is the lack of restrain security they need a seat belt at least
My recollection of the Octopus (when the funfair rocked up for a week circa 1987/8) was more of an endurance test than anything else (however long they ran it for seemed like an eternity and it took me a good hour to recover) - in hindsight, there might have been something to be said for getting on when the fair is busy and they have more inclination to get you down again and get the next bunch of paying customers on - as thebarak says, 90-120secs would be ideal (or even a second pass for another short run - a great ride in short bursts but a long first run can put you off getting back on - even trying to focus on the loose pod bolts didn't help after the exhilaration gave way to the green :)
whoa why are your words upside down
I want to go there but I will not ride that ride
@xXxSexyEmoBoyxXx they are my official Ghost Train Shoes ; P
Gaah, I hate going on this ride by myself. Especially when it stops at the top and you start spinning...
ive been on this
Went one one of these in Manchester when the music fest was on. Good fun.
