The coins and notes in Australia are also different sizes, it's weird when you put a $100 next to the $5 cause they go up in increments but the largest next to the smallest is kinda weird
I remember as a kid dealing with a bunch of cash that had those brail indentations, this was before credit cards became popular where I lived and people primarily used cash. My dad has just been declared blind but he's been losing his vision for awhile now. We use the bump dots and I put rhinestones in different shapes and sizes on the washing machine. For his medications I made 3D printed tags with raised shapes that fit on the bottle neck with a hair tie.
You, my lovely are a beautiful human ❤, your dad is so lucky to have you helping him out with his new way of life, coming up with ideas to make his life a little easier❤😇
For prescription medications, if you ask, many pharmacies will put braille labels on before giving them to you. Also, Idk if it's the same method you're talking about but doesn't sound the same, you can get braille labelers that work just like a regular label maker, just type, hit print, & then peel and stick on anything you need. If you're in the US and haven't done so already, get in touch with your local "Library for the Blind" and they can get you tools and resources you never knew existed.

Well.. the bumbs flatten over time, so it probably won't be readable by that time they reach a bilind person, better bug your government to replace the bills with one's that are different colors and sizes like many countries do.
That’s actually super sweet! If everyone did one small thing to make the world accessible for someone else, society would be way better off. When I build my home, I’m going to make it wheelchair accessible in case guests come over.
I've seen much smaller labels that are audible. Also there is a device that will tell you the color of anything you point it at, so that's really neat too.
Nah, just business. "Kind" would be demanding the government implement requirements for all manufacturers, including the US Mint, to include all this stuff automatically, at no extra cost to visually impaired consumers.
The currency doesn't come with anything to help distinguish with touch??? Our currency in India comes with tactile marks, and not Braille, its accessible for any blind person. Literate or otherwise.
Technology for the blind has come so far. I remember as a kid i was so impressed by my blind grandfather's sugar dispenser that dosed one teaspoon at a time. That was his only item that made his life easier. He had to do everything else with such ingenuity. He was a mechanic and repaired outboard motors for a living but was also a handyman and did general repairs for the 10 little housekeeping cottages him and my grandma rented out all summer. I have so many stories about him, but suffice to say, if you put your finger in a light socket to check if a customer's light was out due to a bad bulb or a dead fuse, all the hair standing u on your arm is a good indicator that it was just the bulb. Oh and also, if you want to drive, just stick your white cane out the driver's window of the truck. You can tell the difference between the grass and the gravel, which keeps you perfectly straight in the looooooong driveway as you drive it to and from the house/shop. Somehow he never ran anybody over, and the driveway being a hill helped him know where the lake was. When the truck levels out it means you better stop unless you want to go off the dock and straight into the deep end. He was a fascinating man.
I noticed last night that the VA cards have Braille. As the only Braille reader in the family, due to channels like yours piquing my interest, I was able to tell it said VA. Pretty cool.
Nfs just watching this shit made me cry cuz i had this one friend who blind and she didn’t like the kinds of jokes we made about her disability so she made us all wear blind folds for the day in school so we would be able to “see” where she was coming from. Hands down a very depressing day overall, because aside from the silliness of us bumping into walls and needing to ask people for assistance when moving class to class, the reality was at least we could take the blindfolds off, she has to live with that. So anyone reading this, please treasure your body because we only get one and some people don’t even get a healthy one. 💯💯💯
I never thought about how few products and things that people who are blind can buy at just a regular store all of these items would have to be found at the specialty store or online!!
Most blind people aren't completely blind or haven't been blind their whole life. I believe it's pretty rare to be completely blind from birth. It's a spectrum, blind can mean a variety of things.
My great grand father was mostly blind and I was a bit of a hyper 'do first think after' kid. My grandfather loved popcorn so one day I put a sticker over the popcorn button on the microwave. He had good days and bad days with his vision, and one day he noticed it was there. He was mad at first, and scolded me for putting stickers on something so expensive. But a few weeks passed and he thanked me. He said it made it easier for him to find the button and I was happy cause he wasn't mad anymore. I miss him.
I had no idea what these were for, I’ve been peeling them off every time I found one. That’s crazy. I’ll think about leaving them on in the future but I’ll probably still peel
I have a bone to pick with the sticker buttons on the microwave- The sticker on the 5? Perfect- I use a 10 key all the time and that tactile bump on the 5 lets me know my home point/where my fingers are. The identical tactile bump on start and stop though? That would confuse me so bad. Start and stop are not in consistent places on every microwave - if this were in one’s house, that’s probably fine. You can memorize start is left, stop is right- but in a public place, you’d still have to grab a sighted person to tell you the difference between the two. In this instance, I think I would much prefer the brail labels instead, and just label them “Start”/“Stop”
Fun fact! In Australia our notes now have braille. I remember hearing about it years ago, the kid who was talking about it was excited to be able to know how excited to get when someone gifts them money (like at birthdays and stuff)
That money tactile thing is cool. As someone who is mostly blind (septo optic displasiya), Nystagmus, among a lot of other things. I’ve lost most of my vision. To the point where I can only see out of the center portion of my left eye (no right eye at all or left periphery or centripetal).
