We are suppose to be a Representative Democracy. However, we have two entities in place that undermines this:
      1) The electoral college, that effects the White House, 2) The Senate, that represents land, not people
While representation in our government should be the goal, representation of our votes SHOULD NOT.
NO ONE should represent your vote, via “delegates”, “electors”, coin toss, or a deck of cards.
FYI: You are voting for a delegate or elector, not your candidate.
Did you know, delegates are "pledged" to a candidate, however, NOT legally bound to them?

@@savegreenland1640 That kind of thinking assumes states are monoliths, which simply isn't true. So-called blue states are often 40% or so rightwing. So-called red-states are often 40% or so leftwing. Rightwingers in California are completely ignored and disenfranchised by the electoral system. Louisiana leftwingers are completely ignored and disenfranchised by the current system. My vote should matter as much as anyone's, yet it doesn't because I am in a red state. And before you're happy about that, remember that all of your rightwing brothers and sisters in California are just as screwed over as I am.
The truth is that the electoral system is an archaic holdover from the days when America was a Confederacy in all but name. It kind of made sense when the United States was halfway between a country, and an alliance of nation-states. It makes zero sense now, or really any time past the Civil War.

But how do you equitably define "the most"? Ultimately, you want the winner to be the candidate with the most possible support. A 50+1% threshold seems simple enough, but becomes increasingly unlikely as more candidates are added to the field. So, what do you do? What if, in a large and highly competitive field "the most" is under 30%? Under 20%? It seems highly undemocratic to give a "win" to a candidate with so little support overall, not to mention risky in a primary where the winner of the process will go on to face candidates from other parties later. Do you hold a runoff election with just the two candidates with the highest percentages of the vote? That's possible in a general election, but not easy to work into the presidential primary schedule. Do you build a runoff into the vote with a preferential voting system so that the lowest-ranking candidates can simply be eliminated and an alternate vote substituted?

As an outsider looking in the whole process needs revamping, starting with reducing the time frame, reducing the need to rely on big bucks, if you don't have enough money you drop out, even though you may make a wonderful president, some democracy.
Stop worrying about outside interference, when you have internal, rigging and vote suppression techniques inbuilt in the process, gerrymandering and the electoral college, which I do not profess to understand.

I've just voted in the UK Labour Party leader election. I know, a very different position to US Presidential Nominee, but the winner of this could become UK Prime Minister in the future.
Voting is open to all members of the Labour Party and registered supporters. Its one person one vote, all votes are treated the same, there are no delegates or groups that have more say. Voting is open for 6 weeks and is either by post or online. It is a ranked preference system, so you say which candidate is your first preference, which is your second etc. When the vote closes if one candidate gets more that 50% they are elected. If nobody gets 50% of first preferences then second preferences are added in etc.
This is not how it used to be. The party leader in the past was chosen by an electoral collage made up of Members of Parliament, affiliated Trade Union delegates and local party delegates. Much more democratic now. So systems can change, it just needs enough grassroots pressure to make it happen.

And what happens when Donald Trump (or another Trumpist) challenges the results? We were lucky that Bruce Poliquin calmly accepted the fact that, though he had won in the 2nd District of Maine on election night 2018, he had lost once the computers whirred and whizzed and decided, based on ranked voting, that Jared Golden had beaten him in a close race several days later, not because ballots were miscounted the first time, but because ballots for a third candidate were counted at all? Suppose he had claimed that the computer program was faulty? By the way, junk the Electoral College (in theory getting rid of it is a very good idea) and also introduce ranked voting and, if that were in place this year, I guarantee you would not have a certified president by January 20, 2021, with as much confusion sown by Donald Trump as existed after the Iowa Democratic caucuses. You'd be counting and recounting 140 million ballots until 2024, which is exactly what Trump would want. No candidate would be certified as president or VP on Jan. 3rd, and Congress could determine that Trump should stay in office, choose someone else, or the House could disagree with the Senate. Then what happens, when all constitutional remedies for indecisive elections are exhausted? The military decides and the US completes its transformation into a so-called "banana republic"? It's all based on trust. What do Americans trust more now? A complex computer program that would run through 140 million ballots in what is essentially several rounds of runoff elections, with the candidate lowest on the totem poll being eliminated in every round, or counting, from 1 to 70,000,000 each individual ballot marked with an X in the appropriate box? 1 for A, 2 for A, 1 for B, 3 for A, etc. How would the rules work? Suppose there were 18 candidates on a primary ballot? Do you have to rank all 18? If you didn't, would your ballot count? Suppose you ranked no one #1, because you really weren't enthusiastic about any of them and started with #2? Does your ballot count at all and if so, how is it counted in the first round of computing on election night? Suppose you rank two candidates exactly the same, despite the fact that the rules say not to do that? Would your ballot be thrown out? For a party that wants, supposedly, to expand voting rights, how many people who didn't quite follow the rules would be disenfranchised because they made one of the mistakes I just mentioned? "Oh, c'mon, Americans aren't that stupid and if they are, they shouldn't be voting in the first place," you say. Again, is that an attitude that will get more Americans to express their wills on Election Day? And I'd add, what about the Florida ballot in 2000, when people couldn't tell whether they were voting for Pat Buchanan or Al Gore because of the placement of the boxes on the printed ballot? Were they stupid, or was the ballot faultily designed?

Ranked choice voting itself isn't a bad idea but super delegates are. Therefore no super delegates anymore!
However, in the end the person with the majority of the votes should win, not the one who has just a plurality. Majorities are always the more democratic way.
So how to get to that?
If a majority of the votes cannot be reached in the first round, then the candidate with the least votes should be removed and his votes should be distributed to the other candidates according to how his voters ranked their choices. This process should be repeated until one candidate reaches the majority of the overall votes.
Also the votes that cannot be allocated anymore should be counted and added up. If there are only two candidates left but no one reaches the majority of the overall votes because too many votes couldn't be allocated to them anymore then a second and final ballot needs to be announced between the two final candidates which should be held on a Saturday two to four weeks later to ensure a high voter turnout.
The final ballot will then lead to one candidate getting the majority of the votes.
That's how it is done in some of the other democratic countries.
