First I'll say I'm not a professional but have had many, many dogs over the years because I always had multiple dogs at once, which is a lot of toenails! I wish you had mentioned that, with the grinder, one shouldn't hold it to the toenail for more than a few seconds because it will heat the nail up and potentially burn the dogs quick. If the dogs nails have gotten longer, take a small amount off, then go to the next nail through all four, (or five if they have dew claws) then go back to the first that was started with till you have them down to best length. All my dogs were nail clipping shy after I let vets (not one vet, we moved a lot) clip them and they cut into the quick, which caused issues with clipping after ward. The grinder was a welcome tool as my dogs would actually be napping lying on their side by the time I was done! It was easier than the clippers if they had dewclaws as well because of the angle they grow at. It really didn't take much to get them used to it, I started by just putting the tool, not the grinder, on the bottom of their foot so they felt the vibration along with the noise. I think the vibration is similar to a foot massage for them, actually. For my dogs with longer hair, I'd carefully clip it off the area around the nail so it didn't get caught, or push it back away with my fingers while grinding with the other hand. I never needed to use treats but they did get one after I was done! Thank you for these videos, they are very informative😀
Nice to see this highlighted. I'm another person who cannot use clippers on the dog. I spent an entire YEAR trying to condition/counter-condition my dog to let me clip her nails and got NOWHERE. My dog would absolutely freak out any time we started the process no matter how long I took to get her relaxed and make it nice and get her consent, etc. When it came to the actual cut. . .no. Wasn't happening. In the end, I had to call it quits and instead got myself a dremel. We started slow. Let her just get used to the device while off. Let her sniff it. Let it touch her. Let me take a foot and touch it to her toes. Then we turned it on and started that again. It really did not take long at all. (I was prepared to spend a week or so getting her used to it. It took us less than 20 minutes.) I was able to get her to lie on her side calmly and relax while I worked on one nail. Now, a couple years later, she actually enjoys nail time because she can just lay on her side and get treats for me hunching over her feet for awhile. Sure, it takes longer (especially if I have to play catch up. . .:P) but it's at least a relaxing time for both of us. I still only do one or two paws at a time - depending on how long she's happy to lay there for me. . .but that's fine with me.
Elentarien thanks! It gives me hope. Just bought a Dremel type grinder. It's very quiet and I just started to get her used to it. I didn't let her sniff it when off. I'll do that too at your suggestion. She's only 6 mo. old so I've got time.
It's all about the technique and approach I guess. I also struggle a lot with the nail clippers so I switched to the grinder and it worked great for me. Although our groomer says that she has no problem with clipping my dog's nails while for me it is always a huge battle 🤷♀️

She tolerates them. I do em while she’s laying on her table. She has a mix of. Black and some white nails. I have had some bad luck with the black nails. I learned how to do them and how to tell if your getting closer to the quick. I have cut her quick 2 times. Just recently . I feels so. Terrible and I hug her and apologize over and over. She has so must trust in me that I am going to go back to the Dremel no matter how long it takes. My older dog has all black nails. He doesn’t mind the Dremel. I have 3 lol. I’m going back to the first one that is less aggressive for my girl. She deserves better than a quick cut. I don’t want her to fear a pedicure one bit. I was able to teach her to lay on her table for brushing every night. Hopefully she will take to it also. It’s awesome your girl likes em.
Thanks for this! I just saw this idea, our dogs hate the clippers and I actually already own a dremel. Actually we have 2 dremels. So I’m going to give it a go.

It did take a while for him to get used to the sound. Just had to take it slow, and I took him to a groomer for a while so he would get used to somebody that actually knew what they were doing. Thanks for the great video.

I was able to trim my German Sheperd's nails with scissor clippers myself up until he was 8 months old. I took him to a groomer and she trimmed his back nails but said he went nuts when she tried the front ones. She said he flopped around like a fish on the table. Since then, I can get one here and there, but he growls or tries to mouth my hands when I'm holding the clippers. I use a Dremel for my 3,other dogs, but as soon as I turn the Dremel on around my German Sheperd, he wants to chase it or bite it. I'd like to see a video introducing an uncooperative dog to a Dremel.
I find that turning noisy or vibrating things on, but not touching the dog, helps the dog get used to the sound. Also, place your hand on your dog and the turned on device on or near your hand so they can feel the vibration, but not feel the device. I also let my dog see me using something on me, like my electric toothbrush, and they see that I am not harmed. Eventually, touch your dog's nail with the device for a moment and then take it away. They will get used to it not hurting or harming them.

Now that I know I need to round the nails when using grinder I think I'll become an expert thanks to you all!
My pup is terrified of clippers and the dremel has been a lifesaver. However in order to prevent the “nail dust” from flying everywhere, I’ve had to use the attachment specifically for pet nails, which has a cover. It is quite unwieldy and prevents me from getting close enough to the quick for some nails. I wonder if you have any tricks for dealing with the plumes of nail dust? I can feel myself breathing it in and the cleanup is a nightmare too!
These dogs are ultra chilled out….my husky is brilliant, pull any nail clippers out though and your public enemy no.1…..would love to see these advice videos in dogs that really hate it….like most of viewers.
I have two Chihuahua mixed breeds and they both hate nail trimmings. Thanks to your training videos I'm getting them calmer and able to get their nails trimmed, slowly and without the stress to them or me. Also, I have a very large pet pig, Aaron,, that I've raised since he was a few hours old, and he'll lay down and let me tell his hooves any time I want. He takes belly rubs and chin scratches for praise. I believe he's calmer than the dogs because I began trimming his hooves, very slightly, when he was less than two weeks old. Thank you so much for your instructions and videos.
Yeah , I've had the privilege to enjoy yorkie as a beloved friend and pet ,, needed to learn the grooming , in between professional groomimg 😅 ,, well Yorkies they are super dogs ,, gotten to having patient problems ,, lol , Marta , my Yorkie actually done a 180 and handed me her hind leg stretched out , like the groomers would have done , so I've learned that she is gonna train me on how to , and she has done great , very loved Yorkie !!!!! 🌹 P S , I got her when she was three ,, 10 years later she is still a joyful " lil bit ",,, as I call her ! Thanks for your help in grooming .
I can't use the grinder. Our dogs hate the sound and I don't have time to train them for the grinder. They hate the clipper as well but at least I can control them more when I use the clipper. My main concern is avoiding the quick. That is the mistake I used to have because the nails of our dogs are either black or too dark to discern the quick.
It’s funny showing off how your pup doesn’t really respond to the sound of the grinder. I’ve apparently gotten mine so well conditioned for nail grinding that both of my greyhounds get excited when I pull it out. They have made nail trimming so so easy. In fact, I do tend to run into a problem: When I’m working on one, the other gets jealous. I had to intentionally get a smaller dog bed for this process because one would try to squeeze in on the bed with the other, making the work more difficult. This is really good info. I came here to see more info about clipper nail trimming. I’ve used grinders for years, but I’m curious if they would enjoy clippers better. The one thing that I found missing here is info on positioning the clippers on the nail and why. I’ve heard and read that if you don’t position it correctly, it can cause pressure and pain on the nail. Or if this is less of a concern, it’s still not mentioned. Does it actually matter? I’m probably going to stick to using the grinder overall. I use a high quality tool grade grinder (Milwaukee, with 60 grit Dremel compatible bands) because Dremel uses pretty terrible batteries with their pet nail grinder product.
It really depends on your dog and their temperament. Some dogs are just too scared to use either while they are awake. They need the help of a professional groomer or the vet in these situations. But if they are willing to let you use the clippers it really depends on what the dog will tolerate. Some dogs do not like grinders but do fine with clippers. Then there are some that do better with grinders. The vet uses regular clippers on mine.
thanks so much for this video! i've been giving my dog a treat after i had clipped a claw. she lets me do her claws, if a little hesitant, but i will definitely start from 0 with your approach :)
My sensitive minpin x chihuahua tolerated nail clipping (with high value tuna rewards). I tried the grinder but the noise and vibration freaked him out so now he won’t even let me use the clippers. He has to go to the vet for toenail trimming now which he hates. I’m going to go back to basics following your tutorial for clipping and maybe he can get back to trusting me.
Been useing a grinder with my 3 dogs. I put them in a hanging sling. And reward them with a frozen Kong with peanut butter. They only weigh 21lbs so many not work for a large dog.
The quick is the blood vein. That cannot be shortened. I thought this video was helpful in explaining. Grooming By Rudy How To Cut Black Nails | Locating The Vein
I believe trimming because I started working in the salon that don’t use clippers unless the dog is scared of it. I observed that 95% of the dogs vein are always very long
My dog always let me clip his nails but I have a cane corso and his nails are so thick it’s a huge pain to do with clippers, so I switched to a Dremel and it was the best thing I ever did.
Just bought a grinder and am trying to get her used to it. The dog in the video is the most chilled out dog I've ever seen and I might even suggest a drug test. I think dude is stoned.
I started putting a nail grinder next to my baby pup (I bred her) so very early in life. Even before they really needed grinding Same with blow dryer etc.
I had 2 Bearded Collie boys and they didn't mind having their nails done. I had to groom them every week anyway and they liked it. Now I have a Rescue who had been abused and she's apprehensive. She's come a long way though. Will try your technique.
Definately use a drimmel with a pug lol. But not on full speed and only a few seconds at a time. The friction gets hot fast, also make sure it's going in right direction or you'll have split nails
We just got our chihuahua's clipped, but the lady cut the vein and he bled out. His nails are black but Idk why they didn't opt for the grinder as she left sharp edges.
My dog doesn't have difficulties with the sound of shavers or clippers. What she doesn't like is the vibration. I can understand why she wouldn't like that feeling, 'cause if I use clippers that vibrate too much, it numbs my hand and bothers me. You have to work with your dog for what works best.
My dogs.... hahaha good luck! 😂 I have 4, 2 pit bulls and 2 Irish Wolfhounds. One of each will be fairly agreeable to the manual clippers. One of each will bring the whole house down before they let you anywhere near them with intentions of touching their nails. I couldn't imagine trying a grinder...that would be a bad time for everyone. I'm trying to figure out a way to make it less stressful but so far nothing seems to work. They are hugely food motivated so I thought maybe a hunter's stew party afterwards would help for future nail trims, time will tell.
Watch out for heat. A rotary tool like that can generate heat very quickly. It will transfer up the nail and cause pain. Don't let it run in one spot for any length of time.
Video please, on dogs (foster dog) that won't let you anywhere near her toes. Calming them ... I try with my other dog to just give me your PAW /shake.. and she sees the other dog get a rewards. She let me just touch paw three times. Without growling and snapping. We were going to foster to adopt, but she was never washed, teeth brushed, or nails are bad. In wet weather dogs must with their paws before entering... the other rooms. We are unsure what to do. Her last foster, a calm elderly couple on a farm, said, you have to put her to sleep to do her nails. She had tried to bite me when i tried to softly introduce a brush. I would hate to see this dog not get groomed. FYI when she tries to bite... is is just a scare off action, not to wound. I remain calm . She knows over 10 word commands. Smart dog. I do calming signals first. It is up in the air if we can solve this to keep her. My third rescue. Not sure how to help this over the top reaction dog,... ?? It is not an injury or arthritis.
WHEN USING THE GRINDER, MAKE SURE YOU DONT ADD TOO MUCH PRESSURE AS IT WILL CAUSE AN IMMENSE AMOUNT OF HEAT THAT WILL HURT THE DOG, TRY ALTERNATING BETWEEN NAILS TO PRVENT TO MUCH HEAT BUILD UP
what model Dremel is recommended? I found an affordable price for the 7300 on chewy, but I already have a corded one. is there a large difference in noise, vibration, or power between the cordless pet model and a corded unit?
My dog has black nails on a few of his paws- do you have any tips for grinding dark nails? Like what to look for? Or is it pretty similar to grinding light nails - just no visible quick?
So accurate about using the nail guard. Every time I used it I ended up hurting her and getting a bloody nail. And I feel so awful. Yes I do better not using it. I use cat clippers and a smaller grinder on my chihuahua. Now I know what I’m doing wrong with the guillotine. I try but I didn’t like how difficult it was, I was holding it wrong. Mostly I use a grinder it’s the most tolerated. I have Anatolian Pyrenees so typical dog clippers aren’t strong enough for their nails so we only drimmel. I tried a groomer but they ended up creating so much splintered bleeding terrified dog damage it took me months and months and many UA-cam videos learning to nail trim to get my big baby ok with it. After a year we’re good enough but his nails are still always a bit long. I wish more vets and groomers understood that breeds like his has harder denser nails and you can’t just grab a paw and start wacking This was soooo very very helpful!
I bypass this altogether with my GSD. I just use a hose and a bitumen driveway. He chases the hose madly in circles around me (trying to bite the water) for about 60 seconds every day after his morning walk. It grinds down his nails perfectly. The vet says they couldn’t do a better job themselves.
What do you do when your dog pulls away, fighting until she's free? At 1st I could nip 2-3 nails just enough to take off sharp point while sleeping but then she's up and gone. So I bought a grinder and for the first few days, I introduced, treat, sat it beside her. She was calm until i reached for her paw and she's like, ohhhh no you don't and she was gone!! I've given her Benadryl and even though she was relaxed, as soon as I took a flashlight to look for quick, she fought and pulled away like a Tasmanian devil until she could break free. She's almost 5 months and they're getting too long sharp. After my son's dogs vet just "chopped off" half her nails in a matter of seconds. They were split, rough and I was surprised they weren't bleeding. So I bought a grinder. Coaxing with peanut butter she's fine. But I need serious help with my pup 😩
I work at a grooming salon. Just yesterday we had a big German Sheppard who couldn't be managed by two strong guys. He was so aggressive we had to tell the owner we couldn't have him back. Of course in this setting we don't have the time that you ďo!😁
You mean a corded one, they're all electric. ;) I'm not familiar with the variety of these products, but If you can find a product that works with 18650 Li-Ion batteries, you're golden. 👍
You would laugh at me but first I would say I never let anyone else clip our dogs nails for the simple fact I didn’t want them getting cut in the quick. That would hurt and I didn’t want to have a scared panicking dog to have to deal with for a looooog time after. So most of our dogs were month’s old or older. All GSD’s. There was one we got as a pup at 7 weeks old. Especially with that one when young I made it a point to play and handle their feet. Then when we got to nail trimming time I’d get an ash tray and the large human nail clippers. Their nails were basically all black and as such it is a problem to see the quick. What I would do is using those nail clippers; work my way back and forth down each side of the nail till I could see I was getting close to the meat or nail bed. That was far enough. Later I got a battery operated grinder that I’d use with the guard cover off at the end of clipping to touch up any sharp edges. Never had to fight with the dogs doing this. No panicking either. They would just lay on the living room Rug. When we were done they knew the test. I’d send them to walk on the kitchen vinyl floor. No clicking any more when they walked. Then it was some good treats. Meat jerky, weiner’s or cheese. Something they really liked. I had a couple instances where one got a cut foot and another a broken nail that was bleeding. Both dogs were really good as they got neosporin on the owies with. Large bandaid; then gauze wrap and good tape jobs. They wanted to start to pick and got told no. They left those on for a day or two. When they got them off they got packaged up again so they were covered long enough. The thing is I think they understood we were trying to help. Probably because of knowing or understanding the toe nail trimming wasn’t hurtful. Best thing is start teaching them young.
Anyone thinking about using a dremel on your dog’s nails be very careful I used one several times on my dog then the last time I used it she swung her tail around and it got caught in the dremel she almost had to have the tip of her tail removed by the vet she had to take a lot of meds and wear a cone for over a month it’s finally back to normal, I’ll never use it again.
I use a nail clipper first and when I’m done, I’ll file her nails by hand 🤚 I don’t own a grinder, a metallic nail file works fine for us :) that way I don’t need electricity to do it because we spend much time in nature camping ⛺️
Grinders need to be made wayyyyyy quieter though. I found what is to be the “quietest” available, and it still makes a very irritating/intimidating buzzzzz.
The quick still looks the same. When you look from underneath there’s a line. Trim bit by bit and as you get closer you’ll notice the line actually ends and that’s the end of the quick. It’s harder to see on the darker nail and the nail is much harder. Plus you have to be able to see better and have better hold of the foot. But it’s possible to train yourself and your dog to get through this. I’ve actually started with the sanding tool and only then, once I realised what the quick looks like, I switched to the clippers and a grinder to sand the sharp edges away.
Depends on what your dog is willing to tolerate. Some dogs hate grinders. Other dogs do not mind them. Some dogs are so sensitive about having their feet touched neither work and have to be put to sleep temporarily to get their nails trimmed.

In 2022, the answer is probably staring you right in the face😷

Do u have those RFID chips for ur dogs?? Incase they get lost?
What a great video. Love the added comments. Thanks
Thanks for your help in grooming .
so what specific brand of grinder is the Instructor in the video using?
Can you offer some help for trimming a dogs nails that are black? Haven’t found a way to see where the blood line is.

Awesome thank you!!
I love how chill that dog is.
Thank you.
Thank you so much for your training tips! May I ask what kind of treats you use for training? TIA!
Thanks for this video! I successfully trimmed Nico's nails with our new Drimmel.
I use an extension snake for my Dremel. It saves holding the big bulky thing..
Excellent tutorial! Thank you!
can you provide a guide on cutting or keeping dark nails short and avoiding the quick? which is a better tool, a clipper or a grinder?
I think a grinder is better for dogs nails but clippers r quicker.. but they might hurt dogs more than grinders imo
Great video, but what to do if my Shiba Inu 3 months old gets aggressive and bites? He never lies down still on the couch.
Been useing a grinder with my 3 dogs. I put them in a hanging sling. And reward them with a frozen Kong with peanut butter. They only weigh 21lbs so many not work for a large dog.
WOW this is soooo helpful! Thank you!!!
Does using a file help to shorten the quick so you can cut or clip the nail shorter? What is the best method to shorten the quick?
The quick is the blood vein. That cannot be shortened. I thought this video was helpful in explaining. Grooming By Rudy How To Cut Black Nails | Locating The Vein
You can recede the quick by trimming more often. Anywhere between every couple of days and to every few weeks can work.
I believe trimming because I started working in the salon that don’t use clippers unless the dog is scared of it. I observed that 95% of the dogs vein are always very long
Doggo's laying there looking like the speech bubble should actually read "Paint me like one of your French poodles, Jack". :D
Excellent video. Thank you.
A vid and some images on how to identify the quick would be a great addition. This vid is great tho.
My dog always let me clip his nails but I have a cane corso and his nails are so thick it’s a huge pain to do with clippers, so I switched to a Dremel and it was the best thing I ever did.
Excellent info! Thanks
Just bought a grinder and am trying to get her used to it. The dog in the video is the most chilled out dog I've ever seen and I might even suggest a drug test. I think dude is stoned.
IS IT A GOOD THING TO DRUG YOUR DOG INORDER TO TRIM HIS NAILS? IF IT IS NOT HARMFUL, WHAT DRUG SHOULD I USE?
@@verakilgore5477 I think it was just a joke. Do not drug your dog at home without veterinary recommendation.
You're right... That chilled out behavior is not normal when they get their nails done, especially their front paws!
@@tamchats21 it’s normal if they’ve been trained properly from the time they were puppies~
😅😅😅😅😂😂
I started putting a nail grinder next to my baby pup (I bred her) so very early in life. Even before they really needed grinding Same with blow dryer etc.
I had 2 Bearded Collie boys and they didn't mind having their nails done. I had to groom them every week anyway and they liked it. Now I have a Rescue who had been abused and she's apprehensive. She's come a long way though. Will try your technique.
Definately use a drimmel with a pug lol. But not on full speed and only a few seconds at a time. The friction gets hot fast, also make sure it's going in right direction or you'll have split nails
How come u don't just use nail clippers instead??
If your dog has hairy feet you can also just use tights on their foot. Stick their foot through the stocking and hair is out of the way
We have a tiny Jack Russel and human pliers-type nail clippers are much more size-appropriate for the job!
Are you holding the base of nail at the paw firmly? If nail is not held securely, the vibrations intensify
Can you do a video on trimming black nails?
Yes, please!

Are there particular nail grinder brands that you suggest or that should be avoided?
Ones that are made specifically for dogs like the right dremal
My dogs.... hahaha good luck!
😂
I have 4, 2 pit bulls and 2 Irish Wolfhounds.
So how do you know where the quick is if your dog has black nails?
Name or type of grinder? I have silky terrier long hair . Nails long 😖😩
Could you please teach it with a much younger, more nerv
ous, and active dog? Thanks.
Funny that the vast majority of videos about nail clipping are bright nails, my dog has black claws it makes the process significantly more difficult
Yaa, I don't think she could do it on black nails🙄😆
My dog Blackie doesn't like his nails clipped. He won't let me clip his nails what should I do
I use the dremel on our GSP. He has several black claws and they are HARD.
What if my dogs nails are BLAck? The how can i see where the quick starts??? Please help.
My dog has black nails on a few of his paws- do you have any tips for grinding dark nails? Like what to look for? Or is it pretty similar to grinding light nails - just no visible quick?
Once you start seeing a small black circle in the middle of their nail. That is the start of the quick.
To start with - to clip dew claws when pups are just few days old. Than - to give advises on how to clip other claws 😆
Where can I purchase a nail clipper for my dog his nails are like claws😢
I wish more vets and groomers understood that breeds like his has harder denser nails and you can’t just grab a paw and start wacking
This was soooo very very helpful!
Informative video.
I get this! Most of the videos I watch on UA-cam show a really calm and trained dog already. My pup is active!! And teething!!
I work at a grooming salon. Just yesterday we had a big German Sheppard who couldn't be managed by two strong guys. He was so aggressive we had to tell the owner we couldn't have him back. Of course in this setting we don't have the time that you ďo!😁
Shepherd.
I love the grinder but the batteries dont last so I need to find an electric one =( ty
Great vid
I heart this video!
When you are grinding her nails, where does all of the “nail dust” go? All over your couch and in your living room air?
Excellent🤩
recently bought a grinder, dog has no problem but the smell is horrible!!
Sprite is so sweet!
Also if you hold the grinder too long it will heat up the nail and hurt the dog that way. Be careful guys.
You can see the quick because of light nail color, what about brown or black nails ?
The quick still looks the same. When you look from underneath there’s a line. Trim bit by bit and as you get closer you’ll notice the line actually ends and that’s the end of the quick. It’s harder to see on the darker nail and the nail is much harder. Plus you have to be able to see better and have better hold of the foot. But it’s possible to train yourself and your dog to get through this. I’ve actually started with the sanding tool and only then, once I realised what the quick looks like, I switched to the clippers and a grinder to sand the sharp edges away.
I enjoyed with YT video which I found educational. Grooming By Rudy How To Cut Black Nails | Locating The Vein
Depends on what your dog is willing to tolerate. Some dogs hate grinders. Other dogs do not mind them. Some dogs are so sensitive about having their feet touched neither work and have to be put to sleep temporarily to get their nails trimmed.
Would like more of a close up shot
Sprite looks bored lol I turn on my SILENT grinder and my bulldog has spasms. I’ve never used it on her!
I clip the nails and then do the smoothing with a dremel
