How The Suicide Squad Finally Fixed Harley Quinn

- Harley Quinn, portrayed by Margot Robbie, is by far the best and most popular character in the DCEU. Without Margot's performance, Harley Quinn wouldn't have the success she has today. With the fallout of a shaky start to the DCEU, Warner Brothers knew they had to run with the only thing that was working, Harley Quinn. Giving Harley her own vehicle in Birds of Prey cemented the fact she is capable of leading a film, but where will Dr. Harleen Quinzel go from here?

one thing I can respect is that she has passion for the character.
She even wants Poison Ivy in the next film.
As much as I love Robbie's Harley, I think the "Harley Quinn" animated series does a much better job of embodying the character than the "Birds of Prey" movie did. The animated show just nails it.
It just how it is with the DCAU doing a generally much better job than the DCEU
I agree. But man I hate the voice actress's performance. She can't even keep the Brooklyn accent for an entire episode
@@mr.doctorcaptain1124 That's my biggest problem with that show, no matter what I just hear Penny from The Big Bang Theory, who voices Harley.
@@thorogood473 it always has
It's why said the DCAU is alot better than the DCEU.
I really love Harley, she's such a complex, yet vulnerable, character. Due to her chaotic insanity, you'd almost forget that she used to be a psychologist, until she'd drop some insightful gems of wisdom.
you love Radiohead right
I never saw Harlee as a vigilante or anything in BoP. Almost everything she did in the movie was in an effort to get the people trying to kill her to back off.
I agree in all of this. The difference between Birds of Prey and The Suicide Squad is that BoP tried to make her an anti-hero. And Harley isn't an anti-hero. She's a villain. And she is fine with being a villain. She loves being a villain. Sure, she comes across as lovable but she should have no problem stabbing you in the eye if you were to cross her wrong. She is chaos. She's dangerous. She has her own moral code and not some outside moral code that you would agree is good or evil. And unfortunately for us that self-made moral code is wrapped in a blanket of bat guano crazy. Gunn got that. She isn't Deadpool. She's Harley.
Well she did say "I'm a bad person" after double crossing Cassandra Cain
I think she can pull off Anti Hero if they really insist on it, in some canons she was nearly _Robin._ But learning "oh, right, I'm not supposed to stab people in the eye anymore, whoops" has gotta be a main focus
She shouldn't just _own_ a beanbag gun
PREACH IT!
Harley Quinn the character hasn't really been a full-fledged villain in the comics for a while now, leaning much more towards hero.
@@LGSN96 yeah but the comics have been dying. Marvel comics are kept alive by being subsidized by the mcu and DC has canceled all but 21 comic lines. To put it in perspective, when DC rebranded in 2011, they launched with 52 comic lines with the intention of building up to hopefully more than 70 or 80 comic lines. Instead, New52 died, and they had to rebrand again in 2016. That failed, and now they've had so many budget cuts they are currently running 21 comic lines total.
The Manga comic DemonSlayer outsold the entire American comic industry, combined.
DC comics have been failing for years. I was an avid former fan but I won't touch them anymore, they're trash.
So don't mention the modern comics like that's the mold DC/WB should follow... they've already shown following those storylines is a great way to not sell tickets.
I feel like Arleen Sorkin should get a mention here somewhere. She cemented Harley's character across 17 years in most (all?) major appearances from the original BTAS through to the original Arkham game, to the point that even when VA-legend Tara Strong took up the mantle, she effectively just tried to do her best Arleen Sorkin impression. I don't think it's coincidental that as other portrayals get closer to hers, the more approval they seem to receive.
Harley Quinn was litererally based on Arleen Sorkin. She and Paul Dini are friends. Watch clips of her on America's Funniest, she is Harley.
Yes. Arleen is the blueprint. And the title is disrespectful of past iterations. I love Margot Robbie as Harley, but she fid not "fix" something that wasn't broken.
@@tukos7370 margo robbie character kinda broke the character when they turned her into ironic jack sparrow x deadpool hybrid.
Margot Robbie’s Harley is just absolutely perfect. It would be difficult for me to ever see anyone else in the role tbh.
The one I could think off the top of my head is brittany murphy tbh. Margot is no less talented definitely, but I can't help to imagine what would happen if lol... I'm glad we got margot tho
Not going to be that difficult since Lady Gaga is also going to do a great job at potraying Harley Quinn in Joker: Folie A Deux (2024)
@@ayubali2431 let’s see the performance and writing before we crown anyone lol
I don't know about you, ladies and gentlemen, but I would like to see Harley in a much more serious, gloomy and slightly ominous treatment with notes of tragedy without excessive comedy (like the entire Suicide Squad, in principle).
By the way, I heard that Todd Phillips is going to make a sequel to "Joker" and they say there will also be Harley performed by Lady Gaga, I hope that they will make her just like that.
I really wish they'd embrace the fact that Harley is incredibly smart, or just something to do with Harleen and not just Deadpool but woman
I don't understand the deadpool comparison at all. This is such a low effort take on Harley. Bugs bunny was a better comparison. Bugs was intelligent. Deadpool is an idiot.
@@tukos7370 Harley is stupid according to the new movies, just crazy. Shooty shoot, act like a funny child, break the fourth wall, be a badass, sell merch rise repeat
The character of Harley Quinn is far from ditzy. She super intelligent, on a scary level actually in her psychoanalysis of others. She may play ditzy, but usually that’s just her goofing off as the free spirit she is or manipulating some other (presumably male) character.
Margot makes a good Harley Quinn same with the actor that plays Harley Quinn in the animated series on HBO max she makes a good animated voice for the character.
It’s Kaley Cuoco. She also plays Penny in The Big Bang Theory.
Harley was a member of the team in the comics, in the new 52 team around 2011/12
The problem is that the new 52 itself, is considered by many, a terrible reboot of the dc universe with many problematic ideas in place
I think Jinx from arcane is the best depiction of that archetype so far, they nailed every detail
I really enjoyed Birds of Prey. My tempered expectations were far exceeded. Wish it had been more successful so we'd be getting a sequel.
7:10 "it's the perfect blend of Bugs Bunny and homicidal maniac"
... but I repeat myself...
What I appreciate about Birds of Prey is that Harley was not over-sexulized. I guess that's what happens when females direct and produce it.
Pardon me, the correct form of address is Doctor Harleen Quinzel. I first saw her in the animated series and then in a comic I borrowed from a classmate at school and i always thought it was rude of us all to forget that she is/was a qualified psychiatrist caught up in a relationship that destroyed her conception of reality and sense of self. releasing a more powerful, charismatic version of her, that (rightly or wrongly, but ultimately) wasn't really her...in other words, Harley Quinn is a tragic character, because she replaced Dr Harleen Quinzel
I saw Birds of Prey for my 14th birthday, and I loved it. I was always Harley obsessed and it was a childish joy when I saw her own movie.
I know it wouldn't make sense... But I'd love a Harley / Deadpool movie
Compared to how badly they messed it up with suicide squad, birds of prey really is quite the step up. But that's relative to the terribleness of the suicide squad movie. In reality, both movies can't hold a candle to the harley quinn in the animated series. In the near future, there will be super hero movie fatigue and the trend will shift to a different type of movie and this conversation will be completely irrelevant.
Harley was absolutely a member of the Suicide Squad in the comics before the movie.
Ayer Suicide Squad played it too safe with the Joker Harley Quinn relationship. Birds of Prey woke her. James Gunn made the character come out perfectly.
We need the Ayer Cut
@@trevorphilips9065
We seriously do not.
@@Carabas72 We do
@@Carabas72 I would only like an Ayer cut if it made the Joker the antagonist instead of a magic belly dancer played by a Super model that can’t act. If the movie was more like the Suicide Squad animated movies then I might like it. Those being Batman Assault on Arkham and Suicide Squad Hell to Pay. I am fine with the animated movies and the Gunn movie.
@@trevorphilips9065 For what? More bad joker portrayal on-screen? If he was good at all in the movie, then the scenes that saw the light of day would have been good themselves
I prefer Harley Quinn in Batman The Animated Series.
She does a great performance for Harley Quinn and the new suicide squad movie really did her very well
Great video, really enjoyed it! Now for me, the last time I really enjoyed Harley was in Gothom City Sirens. That comic was amazing and I even own a hardcover Omnibus (Idiotically called Harley Quinn and the Gothem City Sirens) But ever since then, I always felt like DC has tried to make her more and more like Deadpool to the point I no longer enjoyed her for years. Same with Deadpool, after the Vol 4 run he became a parody of himself and has been for years. However with Harley, I feel like she is finally leveling out into something of her own. Between Margot Robbie and the Animated show she's coming close to being a fav character for me again.
Always enjoy your stuff and look forward to more
Worst part of Hollywood is the copycat mindset. Changing ideas at the last second so you can copy someone else's success is always stupid
I want an unhinged psychotic harley Quinn. Give me the harley I grew up with.
Suicide Squad Harley: Overly Sexualised
Bird's Of Prey Harley: Ripoff Deadpool/Jack Sparrow
The Suicide Squad Harley: Perfectly written and is faithful to her character that original debuted in the animated series
I get it that WB understood that Harley Quinn is really popular and in demand but having her in 3 DC movies in such a short amount of time, one of which is a reboot really shows that WB really doesn't know what it's doing with the DCEU. Don't get me wrong, Margot Robbie is great as Harley Quinn but it's like Marvel seeing how popular Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is and putting him in three Marvel movies within a few years just to make money. I don't think WB realizes that the audience could have Harley Quinn fatigue.
They don't realize any sort of fatigue because they don't watch what they make. They care about counting their money than realizing maybe push somebody else? This is why Batman gets such a bad rep due to constant pivots to push him and his rogues leaves everybody else lackluster.
@@ExeErdna I agree that they're really not paying attention to the results of what they're making. I think it's cool that they made a very dark take with The Batman and an even more different take with The Joker. The fact that they're not really part of the DCEU could be confusing. What's also confusing is making Suicide Squad and then The Suicide Squad a few years later. It reminds me of what Sony was doing with Spiderman. They had a trilogy with the Sam Raimi films and then they rebooted it but only did two movies because the 2nd one didn't do so well. Sony is trying to do their own Spiderverse with the Venom films and Morbius which was very poorly received.
You guys all need to read Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti’s Harley Quinn run right now. Or at least parts of it. Anything in the New 52 was a part of their run.
Birds of Prey took HEAVILY from that run. It was so true to it, it’s amazing. Yes, Harley has been similar to Deadpool ever since the New 52. And that’s okay
7:08 I feel like this scene is also confirming the fan theory that Harley hallucinated the glitter during the police station shootout in BoP.
They should have chose a Sirens movie! Suits her more since she would be a villain not a hero and also since the characters are more interesting than the birds of prey.
To me Birds Of Prey Harley seemed more like the fandom version of the character
Now its time for WB to fix Henry Cavill's Superman, dude was perfect cast but Snyder never gave him a good script
Why that ?
As Namene presented him as it should be, because let's be honest, the old classic image of Superman has already exhausted itself in 80 years and these days rather resembles an outdated caricature that is hard to believe (especially after Homelander).
And what Snyder had looks much more realistic and in the style of our time.
To this day I don't understand why people praise her performance in the first Suicide Squad. Sure, it may be the writing's fault, but it's one of the few times watching a movie where I felt the actor didn't really know how they could deliver their lines convincingly. The "we're bad guys, it's what we do" line is maybe the biggest example I remember.
Harley was soo fun in the suicide squad I love her fight scenes they did amazing for their 3rd try. Now we need more.
She was part of the suicide squad though.... new 52 issue 1 she is in the main roster even on the front cover
I think the key is that Robbie's Harley is good in small doses. Anything more and it goes from fun and funny to annoying.
Honestly, the next that would make me sooo happy would by to adapt Sirens next!!!
Harley Quinn was in the suicide squad in the comics. I remember reading it in the new 52
Stand out character of the Suicide Squad 2 ... really? Not John Cena, not that Polka Dot Guy?
I kinda dig Margo Robbie as a Harley, but she was never utilized well in any of the three movies she was in.
Arleen Sorkin that's the Harley I love.
IMHO, I would not be even surprised if Gunn was not interested to even have Harley in the film.
Harley is a villain. That’s who she is… BoP was not Harley. The Suicide Squad is Harley. She isn’t Deadpool. She’s Harley Quinn.
The Pillars of DC: Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman
The Fourth Secret Pillar: Harley Quinn
Harley Quinn is no pillar. She is poison
@@robbyrhodes4572 She IS dating Ivy now lol
Bruh acting like the Flash and Green Lantern dont exist 💀
I still wouldn't say that Margot is perfect as Harley Quinn because I think her interpretation is very hit or miss. But I agree The Suicide Squad is probably the first film to actually make me care about her character.
They could never portray Harley as she is alongside Joker cause the abusive relationship they have wouldn't go over well with audiences.
I haven't seen the movie yet but I'm really glad to hear this, I knew James Gunn was the perfect person to save this character but I was scared DC were gonna breath down his neck and ruin it.
this should be title how Margot Robbie fix dc because Harley was never broken
I’m sure it’s been said before but she was a member of the suicide squad in the comics before the movie. New 52.
Someone watched cinema therapy and got inspired
Margot Robbie is a good actress but I wouldn’t call her “born” to the role. The only time I felt they got Harley right was when she randomly killed that dictator because he was starting to sound like “Puddin”.
I was a big Birds of Prey fan, but I didn’t see the movie because it centered on Harley, who wasn’t a part of the comics, and I didn’t recognize any of the other characters.
Totally in solidarity with you.
Personally the live action made Harley worse because they got lazy with how instead of making her "the unreliable narrator" due to her being crazy and leaving it up to the viewer that what we see might all be a lie. They just took deadpool without understanding you have to be VERY careful when breaking the 4th wall. Now all of Harley is based on the DCEU and not the DCAU. It feels like they want to remove her from the AU roots more and more.
margot perfect being harley shes funny strong and mesmerizing...
I kinda disagree, i thought Harley Quinns solo scenes were not as engaging as when she was with other members of the suicide squad. I haven't watched birds of prey but I think Harley just need a bit more of villanousness and unpredictability or humour based on lack there of. For me Harley Quinn in both suicide squads (except that scene with guns and roses) seems more like a plot armoured comedian then actually psychotic villainess. And of course all my thought are product of me experiencing the best psychotic villainess ever - jinx. They created her perfectly.
Now dc give me my mad love film
The Harley movie was terrible. It wasn't fun. It was fucking boring. They did nothing worthwhile with the character until the second suicide squad.
By the time David Ayer had signed on to write and direct Harley had been a part of the Suicide Squad. The new 52 started the Suicide Squad with her as a member.
Birds of Prey is a thousand better than the Suicide Squad IMO
I doubt he would but I'd love to see James Gunn make a sequel to BOP like he did with SS
I honestly feel like her accent should be more exaggerated
And she should have been tinier a smaller frame
But she still does a solid job and I do love her commitment
Birds of Prey is delightful and grossly underrated.
There's so much DC stuff that I want to watch, I should probably subscribe to HBO for a month or two to catch up.
Great video, but one small note..:Deadpool doesn’t actually like Chimichangas, he just likes saying the word because he finds the word funny
7:10 Bugs bunny is already the perfect mix of bugs bunny and homicidal maniac.
I appreciate underlining points in the video but the sound design of the clicky clank sound was a bit bothersome/shrill
Someone that kills babies can never be a anti hero
Lady Gaga will never live up to the performance of Margot Robbie.
I'm starting to come around to Robbie's Harley Quinn. Took a few movies
The best live-action Harley Quinn put to screen is Sheri Moon Zombie as Baby Firefly, from Rob Zombie's Devil's Trilogy.
When he said "You can't see anyone else playing Harley Quinn but Margot Robbie" I disagreed big time, I can still see plenty of other actresses playing Harley Quinn. No offense to Margot I think she's a great actor but she doesn't have a strangle hold on the character like Hugh Jackman does for wolverine
@@ggMwaniki I agree.
Trying to make Harley Quinn a good person, is still one of the worst things in modern times. I know they do it because they want to market her too little girls.
And to suprise of no one, James Gunn's take on Harley Quinn was the best so far. It's always nice to have a director who is such a nerd for comics and understands both worlds.
Now he just needs to fix Cassandra Cain

I don't know dude, I still think BoP is the best thing in the DCEU abd never for a moment did it remind me of Deadpool. In fact, I have never seen anyone else make that comparison and I read a lot of media coverage on this subject. I think BoP's authorial vision is superior and more clearly discernible, and its structure more solid and cohesive.
If the rumours are true and batgirl confirms the new dceus cat woman is Michelle pfeiffer the dynamic of sirens could be interesting with her as the veteran and Harley and ivy being taken under her wing.
If the main character in the movie is a villain don't make the movie pg-13. All villain movies need to be rated R
She should have picked Sirens
Harley was introduced in 1992! I've loved her ever since.
HQ Should work to bring the DCU into the forefront of quality Comic esthetic. She IS the ONLY Character they got right. But alas, very late in the game. Still rooting for more Justice League!!!⏳

Harley Quinn was in the animated movie universe Suicide squad
Maybe next she'll team with Batman in the movies--one very serious guy and one very messed up girl!
Margog carrying DC on her back yo
People keep talking about her talent maling it so great. But not mention how hot she is. Thats like 80 percent of it
Harley. Quinn. Is Redemption and. Reborn
The thing that makes her different that Deadpool is that Deadpool actually is a good guy, and Harley is the... we hope she sides with us guy. lol Like if the two were to get together Deadpool would end up needing to kill her, whereas if she was with Deadpool she'd more kill him on a whim. Yes, Deadpool has his issues, but at his core is a good guy with major depressive disorder. (Given everything I get it. lol) Harley's core is I will do anything for love, even if it kills everyone. She's learning how to not be that way, however, that core is still a part of her. (No bitching I love both of them. 😤)
Harley and Deadshot worked well together
Gee, as if Gail Simone wrote both characters and there was a bleed through when they spoke with her about the movie. Hmmm.
"Despite never have been a member of the team in the comics" at the 1:20 mark. What the hell are you saying? She's been in the Suicide Squad since the New 52 days.
4:34 I know I am the odd one out that I haven't seen and not as drawn to Deadpool vs. enjoying BoP.
As long as their is a Harley Quinn there will be Male Gaze🃏
I. Agree. Harley. Quinn. Is. Fixed. By. The. Suicde. Squed
Where is the movie Reset?
I don't like the Harley Quinn animated show. There I said it.
She will? In the CF that is the DCEU?
With Ezra Miller returning but Cavill being let go?
With Zachary Levi probably leaving as well with how Shazam 2 has gone?
With almost everyone from the Zack DCEU being effectively let go?
Not that I don't like the actress, she is definitely one of those rare circumstances of a perfect cast but you can't honestly think things are going the right direction here.
I will admit I'm not versed in all the comic lore. My experience with Harley is pretty much the animated Batman from the 90s. That said: Harley's personality is basically the same as Deadpool's. She's extremely intelligent, snarky, and insane. I don't entirely like that she's been made a central character because she never made me feel like that's who she is. All of her actions were in response to things that happened to Joker. She had no other drive beyond that. I can see her reaching a point where that's no longer needed but I enjoy seeing her mania being a response to love more 🤷♂️
Natural Born Killers.. the Born Bad scene... Almost close.. In Harley jail scene almost..
The under water attack was badass...
But ultimately.. the roof top rescue... The texting is weak... The Real Harley would just know.. that's Joker.. she would've stood up and walked into the hail of bullet's.. knowing she wouldn't be hit.. that's my Harley..
Peace..
Gunn's suicide squad is the only project thats done Margot and Harley justice so far imo. Hope to see more of her soon, especially in a gotham sirens project
No dude, the secret is that Margot Robbie is freaking hot, nuff said.
Yes
Fixed?????
You mispelled "ruined"
I loved Birds of Prey tho-
So, Margo Robbie’s Harley Quinn was redeemed in “the suicide squad.” A film that failed to make back its production budget of 185 million and likely cost the studio close to 400 million after marketing. Because she had one good scene. Right. The story should be “how a great character was in three huge bombs.”
Edit: it would not have list 400 mil. Because it almost made back its production budget. It would have lost more like 150-200 mil.
who cares how much money it made? its a good movie.
It matters because it an indication of who saw it and who is likely to see it. When you make a unsuccessful movie and then inexplicably make a sequel/ spinoff that also predictably flops, you don’t try yet again. You’re wasting effort and money. As for it being a “good movie;” taste is subjective, but I doubt most people agree.
Birds of prey is my favourite
