I loved this episode. Always wanted a capri laser 1.6. I used to love these old episodes, it used to be about flipping cars on a budget. It showed what a home mechanic was capable of.
Flipping cars is a way UA-cam describes 'car dealing' as a hobby? Because "it's just for fun" right, HMRC don't need to know. "I only sell a few, I'm not a proper trader". "Its not about the money" "I'm helping people out?" - yeah right!
I like Ant, but he is "just" a mechanic trying to talk cultured, Edd is a cultured man talking about mechanics. Nothing wrong with being a simple mechanic but Edd's speech is wonderfully articulated. Should the Queen ever talk about cars, she would sound like Edd.
You know guys, it is actually possible to like Edd and also like Ant. Doesn’t need to be a contest. Edd did a great job for many years. Then he left WD and now Ant does a great job on WD. Simple as that.
People mainly don't like the dumbing down / erasing of technical detail which came after Edd left. And the fact it was forced by the new producers. Massive respect to Edd for his principles. No replacement was ever going to cut it really when that's what the role had become. You can thank the Yanks for it, they see something they like, buy it and ruin it by adding stupid.
olixbob Sounds like you quit watching WD after Edd left. Ant really does follow Edd’s example and explains and demonstrates plenty of technical details through his work on the show. As for the move from the UK to the US, there is only so much interest in working on rust issues with cars from the UK. The US cars on the show are typically rust-free so the focus is on many other facets of refurbishing the cars.
Most of the ones who criticize WD with Ant are people that know nothing about mechanics or didn't even watch the episode. People must understand that WD now takes some mechanical works for granted, as they were treated so many times in the past and/or you can easily watch youtube videos to do them.
@@andreboffa2300 Not true, he just has principles and will not kowtow the new production company's vision of over-simplified dumbed down crap for mainstream Tv so they can make more money. Standard Yank trick and we ain't buying it. Three cheers for Edd China!
olixbob Well, that was the rational Edd gave for the breakup, and perhaps things were headed that way. It looks as though the production took Edd’s criticism to heart, because Ant’s work and technical presentations and explanations are very similar to those of Edd.
I know this was to show how to remove and replace a fender but in all accounts that rust was repairable with just a patch and didn't need the entire fender to be removed. It may have been a different scenario if the fender was bolt-on part but these welded ones are easier repaired if possible. I'm certain there are ready-made patches as these all rust in the same place. Good instruction though.
The wings could have holes in them under those rust bubbles. Repairable but quicker to replace them with new ones instead of cutting out the rust, making new patches then welding them.
Shame he didn’t put the lacquer on when it was a bit cooler ,to me the first series of wheeler dealers was better to get a cheap car and do it up now it’s gone crazy with mega prices they should of kept with the original format like flipping bangers are doing ,miss Ed and we’ll done with the fastest Ice cream van record 👍🏻😊
Ed is so young looking here. We watched him mature and grow in confidence presenting too. The show had a lovely simple fix it in your back yard approach here back In the early 00s too showing all the detail. I'm sorry but the new shows just skip all the interesting bits and it's just not British anymore being filmed in the USA. Ant is good in his own way but his hard man image with those big boots and act with Mike Brewer is just not then same as Ed's modest gentlemanly nature and genuine passion for cars. Notice too Ed's good manners as he for 13 years always addressed Mike Brewer as Sir!
I agree with what you say, but blame EVERYTHING on the dialogue scripters, who needlessly complicated the actors more and more. In the earliest WD seasons, when everything was much simpler, Mike was an encouraging storyteller of the car, and the mechanic was always enthusiast about the car Mike brought. In the last Edd season you can see Edd whine and complain too much about "too much work", and Mike is depicted in a cringy way, almost dorky, sometimes. About Ant: Ant is underestimated. Maybe his episodes were a bit more about fabricating than mechanics, but the work he did with the Toyota Celica is excellent, just to name the first.
AGAIN...a right mess made of a Capri. They are amazing cars, so many have been lost due to botched jobs like this. They spend a fortune on other classics and yet do a shite job like this.
Pity they were only allowed a budget of k each car as edd rattle can one panel paint job on a metallic car not his fault was like jigjt and day. Pity they couldn't iid prepped the bonnet and door and sent it to a proper paint shop but would of cost A fee hundred. Stood out like a sore thumb at end when fork goes to buy it. Hence the pun.. 50 shades. Of grey. Least she got a new wing fitted and that sorted the rot
I was surprised when watching this (old) episode when first aired that Ed was disappointed with his paint finish. Anyone who has used a rattle can would know this.
Edd China; the man, the legend. Can't stand the total bore who replaced him, bet he spends his spare time getting himself all groomed for the cameras rather than getting stuck in under an old car. Ed was no nonsense, got the job done, and no offence to him didn't give much of a crap about his appearance!
Amazing when they paint the wing and don't blend it to the bonnet and the colour match is like night and day. Stands out like a sore thumb.. Should of pepped it and sent it to the autobody shop.
I like the work of Edd. But, in Germany you can`t fix a wing like this way. You loose a lot of money, when the dealer find some plastic on a metal wing. Better use a metal of the tube. They can`t find it and it`s stronger! HU-HA... .
It's coming back to Britain and there is a new mechanic joining the show. He's a former F1 mechanic so ought to be good. Ant is still doing occasional appearances on the show
You do realise that it's only a protective coating that the suppliers put on to stop any rust appearing? You could even see at the end of the video that Ed was preparing it for the final paint job.
Haha! They bloody didn’t look as good as new! They looked awful cos after all that work Edd painted them with Aerosols! Mike did almost lay an egg, but it was when e saw the finished job. He must’ve thought Edd was taking the piss!
Edd made wheeler dealers! Was never the same after he went and the whole US thing happened. Should have stayed UK based. Could have done south african imports of classics or something as they super cheap normally easy to get LDH also.
what an appalling job edd makes of this capri, not just the terrible paint job on the wings but the amount of rust ignored and left also the side repeater on wing just ignored. he should be ashamed a man of high standards and principals such as himself. i felt completely embarrassed for him
This was the early days when the main object was to buy a car and make a profit by improving it as much as feasibly possible within a tight budget. There is no point spending £2000 on a car that will only be worth £1500 when it is finished. The idea was buy cheap, spend as little as possible, invest some time and make a small, but reasonable profit.

@Shaz Ali Oooh so that's why people preferred Edd. I couldn't figure it out.
Cracking job Ed

Shocking paint match though 😳
It's not painted though 😳

What about the side repeater hole?
Edd at his best !
they did learn eventually a paint job goes to the paintshop!

Is Edd back ? Wow , is this new show ? What abt Ant n Mike ?
This is from season 1
Knows his stuff does Edd
Free scratches theses days. I just resived my first carborator and on one of the coin valve thing on the edge I seen a nice gouge. It's getting worse
Love this show the paint finnish wasn't the best but the car (as Mike said) did need a full re-paint
Back then Capri's wasn't worth much which is why they didn't.
