For those of us with ADHD that can't sit through a 17-minute video and are here just looking for the lash adjustment numbers. The intake valve is .003 to .005 cold. The lash for the exhaust valve is .005 to .007 cold. So .004 and .006 as noted in this video are good numbers. Now go adjust your valves. For those that need the full tutorial, this is a good video to learn how to make the adjustment. Thanks for posting.

Nice video, and probably the simplest procedure for setting the valves that I have found. Thanks!

Thanks for a simple, straightforward way to adjust the valves! My gut told me taking the spark plug out and fishing around with the screwdriver was probably unnecessary and potentially dangerous😳

Great video However to take the hood off you dont have to remove the small bolts all you have to do is just undo the lights wire and lift the hood up and push to the back and it will come right off I have the same mower and remove the hood all the time

It's not the valves that are messed up it's the compression release on a camisole apart you got to take the engine apart and put a camshaft in it common problem on the intake motors I'm putting one together right now as I'm typing this

Thank you guy for the great video. I’m hoping the valves are out of adjustment and not a broken compression release. Been very disappointed in this Ariel’s 42 with 18.5 hp Briggs not turning over to start half the time with new batteries ect ect. Have to turn the motor over by hand just past the compression stroke to start it if it will any way. I’m going to also put a heavy gage copper battery cables on the battery also. The factory put really small wire which sure is being cheap. If this doesn’t work I guess I will try using a cordless drill and socket to turn it over. Once it runs it runs well plus I run alcohol free gas. Was that .004 on exhaust and .005 on the intake?

More bother taking off the hood than doing the valves. I just bought my feeler gauge so I’m hoping this fixes the starting problem or else I’ll be looking for the vid for replacing the crankshaft/compression release.

I had to replace my cam because my exhaust lobe was worn all the way down 🥴

So is it best to not use any gasket sealant on the head or valve cover gasket? Mines been leaking and time to get back to mowing and don’t want it leaking anymore after I adjust the valves today.

Had issues with my 18.5 Briggs in my Ariens 42 inch lawn tractor. Not running right and it also hydro locked from the carb flooding into the cylinder and engine so would not turn over. Well took valve cover off and exhaust valve moves properly but the intake does not move the push rod or valve at all. Is there a lifter like a car engine that could. Have fallen out of its place when I took the rockers off to tighten the rocker studs? Thought I adjusted the valves after I put it back together and didn’t see an issue with the cam not opening the intake.

I had the same issue, mine was a worn lobe on my cam. I bought a cheap Amazon one and it's been running great since I installed it.

    A aluminum can is 004.5
It’s what I use for both and I tad of slack in exhaust
    Simple 😊

The exhaust pushrod should be aluminum and the intake pushrod is steel for that engine. They are swapped in the engine you are working on.

You didn't have to take those 4 bolts off to take the hood off. it lifts right out...
