Drawing for Beginners: PART 4 - Draw with Shapes
Вставка
- Опубліковано 21 лют 2018
- In this art video I explain how to draw a complicated object by using simple shapes. The video is designed for beginners and those looking to develop their drawing. The drawing is based around a woodman's plane , I explain how to look for the basic shapes of the object and then once those are established add the detail and the final shading. Towards the end of the video I give you 4 great tips for improving your drawing and making the outline sketch much more three dimensional.

I've learned how to have fun with my " beginnings" in art because you teach it so well, instead of, " Look what I can do and you can't yet."
Thank-you so much!!
You are very welcome. I've seen many of those "look what I can do" videos too, which is why I chose fo focus my videos on 'how to get started' with something more realistic to beginners.
Thanks so much Paul. As a child I was told I had a talent for drawing and colour. Over the years Ive used those skills to decorate my home and create a garden, blending colours and shapes. Now I have a bot more time on my hands, I have discovered watercolour, but am a complete new starter. Your tutorials are perfect - easy to follow and they get you started straight away. I also love your boundless enthusiasm.
Many thanks, good luck with your watercolour painting. Cheers

Why do you always establish the darker tones first? I have learned a lot from your videos. Thanks for doing them.
Everything has to be lighter (obviously) than your darkest tone. If you make the darkest tone too light you are restricting the range of tones you can create. So establishing the correct level of dark tone first is important. Cheers Paul
Great video , a simple question , should i rely on shapes for every drawing that i make , can more complex shapes be simplified to this extent ?? and thanks
The knack is to look for simple basic shapes even in very complex shapes.
@@PaulPriestleyart Thank you sooooo much
Hi Paul, what you recomend ,should we copy this drawing in the video?Annnd, what can we do more?Follow next video?
I would suggest following this video and the ones that follow. Copy them then apply what you have learnt to your own drawings. Cheers

Cheers Paul
what pens do you recommend to acquire first?
Do you mean pens or pencils?
@@PaulPriestleyart pensils sir
Can you please tell how to sharp a 8 b pencil is lid is broken every time I sharp.
From SHAIK NABEEL
You make need another pencil if the lead is broken inside. I usually sharpen my pencils with a knife.
Can we swap hands please?
It's not the hands that matter, get your brain in gear and don't give up. Cheers
What is this instrument called?
It's called a wood plane
Thanks for reply
amazing, just cant draw that fast yet
You will
he said dont draw in isolation. HE PREDICTED CORONA VIRUS! :o
Wow, I must be a clairvoyant.
@@PaulPriestleyart you just got yourself another subscriber
i know u learnt art, a lot by yourself, may be some from teachers and mentors, but where did u learn how to teach so lucidly????
All a matter of practice. Cheers
I appreciate the beginning of your drawing: basic shapes, angles and proportions. However, the final result looks like a copy or photo. Where does copying stop and creation begin? I have tried, without success, to send a copy by Toulouse-Lautrec of a seated boy. (Your email address is not recognised) The drawing is not a copy, but it has a life that a copy or photo would not, I believe. Copying is a recognised learning tool, but you seem to be advocating accurate representation.
My video is explaining how, by breaking down an object in an observational drawing, you can get the basic shapes drawn correctly. I wouldn't call my finished drawing a creative drawing, more an instructional drawing. People learn by copying drawings and paintings in the hope of learning techniques etc., just as people who watch my video hopefully do. To be become a creative artist you need to understand basic techniques but then apply them in your own way, you may even reject them, who knows. Copying a photo or a picture is not in itself a creative act unless you add something to it. Many people copy photos and reproduce them so realistically it can be hard to tell the difference between the two. That is not art, it is simply demonstrating a skill very well. It is just like those individuals who show great technical skills with a football, but never make it to professional football team. There is more to art than just technical skill. Check you haven't mistyped my email, they are all working.
somewhat too fast to follow
Sorry about that
