I was the clerk for that auction and was so shocked that I kept looking to see if I typed the amount into the auction software properly. I worked with Opfer Auctioneering for over 12.5 years, and Rick Opfer is the best auctioneer I've ever seen.
The crazy thing is that in some small town there might be an old, abandoned, closed-down pharmacy that has the same soda fountain. The store has likely been closed down for 75 years and the owner can't even get $30,000 for the place. I am going to hire a psychic to tell me where that place is!
How many meals for hungry seniors and homeless children right here in the "The Good Old USA" do you think you could buy with 4.5 million dollars? The answer is you can feed 1,627 people for one year for the 4.5 million. A much better way to spend it rather than a fat cat getting fatter off the sodas he can be served from this fountain in his "East Wing" ! The seller should have donated it to "The Smithsonian" and the buyer should have bought food for starving kids and old folks, both could have claimed it on their taxes and all parties would have benefited.

Best part is that the proceeds go to a great charitable cause: The Schmidt Family Foundation!
