The ones that do, are usually specifically romances. Where that would actually be important. If you want examples of the Marvel/DC In Japan look to Weekly Shounen Jump/Shueisha. Manga like Jujutsu Kaisen, and My Hero Academia. Attack On Titan.

I became a comic book reader in 1989, the same year the first Batman film came out. I may be biased, but I think those were some of the best years to be a comic book fan. Sure, it was plain to see that many writers leaned left politically. It didn't bother me. No one was trying to reprogram me. Now it's so in your face. Who's buying that? Not me. A friend and I were concerned about the future of comics. That was long ago. Somehow comics have endured. But with more options for your entertainment dollar than ever before, something has to give.

Remember Stan Lee's three tips for writing superhero fiction:
1. You don't know what other people read. Write the stories you want, that you would enjoy. Write for yourself. Don't constantly think "what would others like".
2. Make your character a three dimensional person with flaws and a personal life. Maybe he has money problems, maybe he has a family issue ect.The difference is he has a superpower, and think about how he would use that power to solve his problems.
3. Feel free to make your story fantastical, like have a person who could literally fly or shoot laser beams out of his eyes. However, despite that, give it a basis in fact and science. Explain why he has superpowers, and where they come from.

What you said about why Stan lee started. It really hit me hard. I’m making a comic myself. I’m creating characters that yes are diverse but have stories that are why they are loved by me. I really hope when I make it people will buy it and love it. That is what I want. To make people smile and to be away from the political stupidity and the trials of life.

Not really. The issue doesn’t stem for non comic book fans writing comics.
Alan Moore has never been a huge fan of mainstream comics, yet he is one of the most acclaimed writers ever.
Other acclaimed writers have a similar distate for superhero antics or mainstream comics, yet their work is beloved.
As a mexican who read comics books from 7th all the way up to 11th grade. Not ONCE did I ever complain or ask, why isn't iron man dark skinned like me. I can't believe people don't realize that these companies are doing this, not because they actually care, but because its just another check mark on the list of things.
As an Indian I was exactly the same. Don't think anyone in the 90's, 2000's ever cared about fricken skin colours.

People want to see their skin color instead of good writing. They act like there’s no colored heroes. If it’s genuine and written well it will do well. I still till this day find it weird that we’re getting a black Superman before static shock. A really good cartoon that touched on subjects in a great way. So much that show did. And he was bad ass as a old dude haha but I find it funny they rather cherry pick them and not see the awesome heroes they choose to ignore. blade is badass and other awesome heroes who are different race or whatever. I’m an over 50 year veteran of the comics industry. The problem being with story writing. Every character is flipped because current writers don’t have the talent to create their own characters and tell their own stories.
As a reader, I've seen some of the new SJW writers get a big job without much experience, while some of the better writers had to struggle their first 10 or less years. Taking any job they can get, one shots, couple of pages on an ongoing book, do some editing, publish their own books, etc. You can't always fast track that kind of success.
I remember Atlas Comics hiring great creators, and although a short lived brand, it was exciting.
I'd go further - I'd argue they can't even mimic the attributes of the established characters in their writing, despite have decades of reference to pick up on it. Isn't of saying don't have the talent, I'd instead say they have NO TALENT whatsoever.

I don’t have a problem with characters like Miles Morales and Val Zod because they were exclusive and completely separate characters from the original with their own unique character development, and not revamped versions of the original characters…. The most annoying thing is that they try to spin it around and say it's the reader's fault for not buying the stuff the SJWs are spewing.
Demon slayer by itself just in Japan with only Digital sales made more money than the entire Western comic book industry combined, if you go to a books store the Manga section takes up nearly a quarter of the store but the comic books are just one little miserable shelf. Noone wants to read Western comic books because they're fucking trash.
@@BigA40k Exactly. Part of the reason behind the rise of manga as mainstream culture in the US is in no small part due to the descent of western comics.
Though, to be fair, I also think the structure of Japanese manga, and anime, have a big part of it as well. Western comic characters dont have full story arcs, as their stories are more episodic as, their stories are meant to go on continuously. They are many stories centered around a character.
Manga on the other hand tend to have a defined beginning, middle and an end. The creators dont always know how long a manga is going to last, but generally speaking these stories come to a conclusion, even if the great ones take decades to do so. The reader does know what the end game of a manga like Demon Slayer, Bleach, etc. are. They aren't designed to go on forever. They aren't so much many stories as much as they are chapters of a single story told over time.

@@9razzler9 I mean yeah they were meant to be that sometimes, many people still think comics are for children when they are not ( I mean at least every one isn't). It's just like how superheroes are ripped and all they are meant to be sexually attractive. It's true most suits weren't really good designs according to their powers but they looked cool and sold well so they stuck with it. The problem lies in the thinking, the heroes weren't some propaganda machines then (except for Captain America going against the Nazis that was different)
It's true that heroes have struggles but in the olden days it wasn't always society spiderman works because he has difficulty balancing both lives, Superman has to keep his identity safe and save the day whenever the call comes, Batman has to face his inner demons and not kill anybody so that he doesn't become the person he fights against. It’s true-comics have been very societally representative instead of heartedly representative. If a character represents something, they should show it through their ambitions and struggles instead of an elaborate explain action of why the character was created to go with society.

Comics were in decline way before you guys started crying about representation of minorities. Just look at other print publications (outside of japan), newspapers and magazines are dying rapidly too. And they never fully adapted to digital format, comics could have boomed in the digital era, but the industry was shortsighted.

ALSO can we talk about how expensive comic books are nowadays. Honestly idc if the paper quality is bad, or the printing press made a mistake, i just want to read the comic for less than 60 DOLLARS.
I got Cyberfrog from EVS for $35, and that was with $10 shipping costs to Scotland from the US. The comic has a chrome cover and high-quality print. Stickers etc
comics are more expensive from the paper $3 things you used to buy when you were a child.... but for people that are adults I don't think the cost for high-quality products is too much.
You are not buying a comic every week or day... you are buying two (like in my case) a year.... 10, 20,30 comics a year is long gone, the more you buy the more the cost will effect you. If the cost is too much for you you can buy digital copies and read them on your computer for a few bucks a week. Guys like me with disposable income tend to buy quality over mass-produced things aimed at children.

Imagine after Endgame, sitting down with your kids in ten years time and watching the latest Marvel release only to realise that you recognise none of the characters but you do recognise their names. Ironman is a black woman. Spiderman a black man, Hulk is asian, Captain Marvel is non binary, the Red Skull sound like Jordan Peterson and there's no Stan Lee cameo because they perverted all that he had envisioned.
I was sharing some of your same sentiments with a friend just the other days. I too am not happy with the current state of mainstream comics. Thank god for back issues. My favourite period in comics is about the mid 80s to the 90s.
I'm hoping to be releasing my own book soon. And I've been doing a few fan comics for practice. I wanna make the kind of books that got me into comics. I'm happy for your success with your crowd funded books.

I thought the whole point of all these characters were that they “transcend” stereotyping and are ultimately relatable to everyone, now it’s almost like “you can’t relate to said character unless they are now tokenised to your genes”.
That's easy for white people to say. Representation matters. When I was a kid, I noticed that the Super friends were white (rare appearance by Black Vulcan notwithstanding) . Even as a kid way before the divisive era were in I still noticed it. So it's not just a matter of relating based on shared life experience but also in terms of appearance.

When I was a kid, I wanted to see superhero’s punch each other. Someone being woke used to be a good thing. For example: I got a bit more woke when I learned how check cashing stores exploited low income socioeconomic neighborhoods. Or when I learned about how the housing crisis/fraud of 2008 relied upon people selling unpayable mortgages to poor people, and while they generally targeted anyone they could prey upon: the predatory lending disproportionately effected minorities more than white people.
That is not what being woke is anymore. Now that is just called "learning about reality", and being "woke" seems to be a bit closer to denying or manipulating realities in order to service an agenda.

Really cool insight! The only thing I would want to add is that when I was little, a lot of the characters that I thought were cool were hardly ever tan like me. So I used to think my skin color was ugly and I disliked having the skin tone I had because I thought people only admired and valued people that had light skin.
Genuine question, what could have been the solution to that? It's definitely cool to see movies like Shang Chi and Black Panther, but not when you are trying to sit through the nauseating and obvious propoganda that is trying to be conveyed. Another person in the comments wrote about exploring (storytelling) vs explaining which I also thought was good insight. What do you think?

Yes, you can love the Hulk transformation, that was the whole point of the She-Hulk character until this whole feminist, girl power agenda.. My problem with it is they went WAY to far in to 90's "totally awesome, radical cowabunga" territory with Amadeus Cho. It's like Ghostbusters 2016, the original Ghostbusters had some really dark moments such as demonic possession and hell, but with the reboot, they threw all of that out the window, went full on comedy and every man is stupid.

I've never liked comics but am a huge manga fan and can see them inching their way over here to try and ruin manga since many comic fans have moved on to manga. Mainly what I meant was that the new fans and even non fans of anime and manga are now poisoning the community and that's how they always start out. Mangas take us back to how comic books used to be. They have great story lines, awesome action and adventure (Naruto), romance (maid sama) , superhero (my hero academia), pirates (one piece) etc. Comics are barely selling cuz the manga business took over. Teenagers don't wanna read comic books about how being bi, gay, fat, skinny, black, or white is amazing, we don't care, we just wanna have fun and mangas give us that fun.
