This story always saddens me because vicariously I can see this could happen with my business and my wealth when im gone. Tried to literally pay my child (when she was a tween - adulthood) to learn about producing, persevering, perpetuating and protecting money and she has always been disinterested, dismissive and even apathetic unless it’s about spending it. I’ve broken the curse of generational poverty in my family but sad part is, my family is so juvenile and pedestrian in their thinking about money that I do believe i’ll situate my Trust in a manner that majority of my money will go to organizations I donate my time and money to because Id be rolling over in my grave if i knew my child and family created a hot mess of my hard earned wealth like CJ Walker’s daughter did. I know you can’t take it with but you can at least try to leave it in the hands that will make some good of it.
The hardest lesson i lesrned about money was when family that had money cut me off. It was a lesson i needed to learn. Do your child a favor make them work for it and earn their own. Shack O'Neal said this is my money not our money to his kids. Go make your own. Spoil kids become adults who feel they are entitled and i don't believe anyone is entitled to what i worked for even kids /family.
Madam CJ Walker should have made her daughter work in that warehouse. If she experienced working hard to create her mother's product she wouldn't have squandered the money. She was gifted everything she wanted without having to earn anything as a child so she had the same mentality as an adult.
Know a Black person wrote this lol. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with passing inheritance to your children and allowing them to do with it what they see fit. It’s their life. She’s dead and gone now she can’t take the money to the grave with her lol. Believe it or not money is made to be spent even if you disagree with how
Her mother didn't teach her to be frugal, or how to run the business from ground up. She also didn't teach her the need for successful black owned businesses.
Most wealthy people groom their kids to takeover the businesses they worked hard to make. A'leilia wasn't groomed for that task and that's why her so called friends felt she didn't deserve her fortune! This was a great video with a truly sad ending RIP to Madame C.J. Walker a true pioneer for black women she will always be remembered❤🙏⭐
Not a good philosophy to believe or pass on. There are families that are very skilled at creating and protecting generational wealth. There is a science and an art to it. Parents who are newly wealthy need mentorship or education about how to create children and generations that are capable of building and managing wealth. Many newly wealthy parents do not admit that they lack the skills and family culture for child rearing that ensures successful wealth management. Sometimes the first generation also has mental and emotional health issues regarding success and if these issues are not resolved then they set up their own family to fail. Or at least they encourage situations involving their children that ensure that the next generations accomplish less than the first generation. This is a form of self defeating competition by older family leaders against their own offspring. Sometimes this also happens because of lack of long term thinking and objectivity, poor family bonding, low self esteem, or ego dominance and control issues. Sometimes the older and more financially powerful first generation simply refuses to empower the next generation because of selfish and short term attitudes. This results in suffocating the changes, innovations and upgrades that younger and well prepared offspring can bring to a business and this is the older generation's desired result. Even if it hurts the family's future wealth and businesses. Sometimes there is a jealousy and resentment of youthful energy and potential which are shortcircuited by business owners because of a dislike for adapting to change. Similarly, children have to be taught the importance of successful business and family culture. Sometimes children develop poor habits, attitudes and immature resentments toward their parents and family when they are not sufficiently guided, mentored or disciplined. The older, busy and hardworking wealth creators in a family may find these youthful resentments intolerable and frustrating. However, it is the parents that bring forth the children. So parents are the greater force that shapes and determines the family and the next generations. From a long term generational wealth perspective, only irresponsible or self defeating parents blame their children for their children's weaknesses, poor characters, attitudes or skills. The parents' choices about how to raise their children and taking the time to understand what their children are best suited to do, the parents' cultures, lifestyles, and the environments that they create are what most affect the earliest and most powerful phases of their children's development. Children mimic or follow the leadership of their parents and they become the environments that are allowed to influence to them until they become competent to lead themselves. 'Black' families and aspiring blue collar, middle and upper middle class entrepreneurial famillies still have a lot to learn about wealth creation and keeping that wealth growing into the future. Balanced high quality parenting, environment and mentorship are essential when teaching children about smart generational wealth management.
After seeing this, it is required that I follow you. My kids will be watching this. When you grow up poor it is so easy to spoil your children and create these unambitious entitled people. I'm not blaming Madame Walker, it's just that whatever role she played in A'leilah's life, I want to avoid that as a parent. My kids are already spoiled and entitled and I have to redirect them now, while there is hope. A valuable lesson from the past. Thank you.
@@testedtried1233 l could definitely see that. It's funny Madame CJ Walker was probably not that educated and was intelligent while her daughter was probably educated and was probably not that smart. Funny how that happens.
Extremely well researched and presented video. Madame C.J. is of special interest to me as I was born and raised in Irvington's more humble side of town, not but a 10-minute walk from her gracious Villa Lewaro. In fact my sisters and I all took piano lessons at Mrs. Carter's house just next store, so we used to walk past every other day. Growing up in that sleepy little river town, albeit half a century after the Walkers, we used to hear remarkable stories about the legendary parties and distinguished guests - but what somehow became confused in the local folklore, and what you've now made more clear, is that it wasn't Madame CJ who was hosting those extravagant parties, but instead daughter Lelia. So thank you for creating this fine video, which not only enhances my hometown knowledge, but delivers on the fascinating larger historical picture as well ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐ .
Its seem a lot of rich blacks continue the same thing until this day. Case in point a lot of black athletes go broke after their playing days. Most of them spend their money like a drunken sailor on pay day. Another great story young lady.

But she wasn’t taught to run it from the first place . As you seen in the video.. Madam CJ gave her the world. She didn’t have to want for anything . We see that happen with white teens and young adults all the time.

Sometimes parents in an effort to give their children a much better childhood and future than what they had...They create lazy, selfish, spoiled and inconsiderate adults. They have no sense of hard work, or any kind of work. Look at most of the children of privileged families.
Ti, I really enjoyed the replay of your premiere of the story about Madame C.J. Walker's daughter. You presented alot of information that I knew and some information that I didn't know, also. I heard a documentary years ago, where a long time assistant to Madame Walker said that, Madame Walker "spoiled her daughter and she spent money like it was water." Her daughter didn't have any business savy like her mother and quite frankly she probably didn't have any interest in the haircare business, as well. Great investigating, presentation and photos, too. Have a fantastic week. Hugs to Indy and Rocko. Take care 💞
Such an interesting story and slice of history!!! I think her mother unwittingly spoiled her daughter and set her up for failure. She never knew hardship, and having wealth and spending money was just normal for her.
Why should she have to know hardship 🤔 I definitely think she should have been taught to be more financially savvy, but we have to stop supporting the idea of BW needing to struggle, or get it out the mud. There is absolutely nothing wrong with seeing BW live a luxurious life free of struggle.

We shouldn't judge her too harshly. Many rich people who saved and invested lost it all in the great depression. At least she enjoyed it while she had it. Those lavish parties gave black people career and business contacts they would not have otherwise had. Think of how much she contributed to people making a living with all the things and services she paid for. This is an amazing tale. Although, tragic in its own right. The moral that I take from this story is that it might not always be best to leave your wealth to your offspring. Especially, if you've failed to teach them good financial responsibility.
I heard a saying once "Shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations". Meaning, the person who makes the wealth, their progeny will spend it away and the family will end up poor again. The children of financially successful parents may have no ability to maintain or grow that wealth. While it's a shame that she spent all that money without regard to her own future, she had every right to spend that money. It was her money to squander.
I have hypertension and I’m 62 and I am very careful about eating just anything. Along with my genetics I have diabetes as well it’s just a thing as people of color inherited
Madame CJ should've set up a trust for her daughter and should've given her money at different stages like her 20's..30's..40's and maybe this wouldn't have happened.
I doubt if a Trust was financially responsible for a black person to partake in those days, considering the entire concept of a Trust is Trusting some White man with you're money and we all know how they finessed our people in those days...
Her mother built such a wonderful legacy. If only A'Lelia put in, contributed and invested instead of spending or had a sound financial assistant on her team, maybe she could have continued on with the empire and create generational wealth beyond her passing. Its a known fact that the first generation makes money while the next spends it- This reminds me of what happened to the Vanderbilt's massive fortune being squandered away by the younger generation.

This is a prime example of why you teach your children how to be responsible, nothing wrong with having them do chores, or perhaps get a job and pay small bills. Earning your keep and managing your money, knowing the difference between paid and unpaid and dealing with the consequences of a bad choice molds a responsible individual, no matter if your young or old
This story reminds me of what i kept noticing while reading history from ancient times to present. It's extremely common for the descendants of the founder of a dynasty or a big business like this one to do little more than to spend their inherited wealth with parties, clothes, drink and drugs, and "coast" on the prestige of their illustrious ancestor.
The movie about Madam Walker portrayed her as a keen business woman and a hard worker and her daughter as a bohemian free spirited lesbian with no business sense whatsoever.

Madam Walker has an amazing story. She gave so many black women hope . It’s a shame your daughter didn’t take this fortune seriously. Things could have been very different if she did .
Madame Walker and her daughter both died fairly young. They lived by The Vanderbilt's . Her daughter was the one that spent the money on lavish parties. What A Waste !!!!! Most of this history is gone. If her daughter had done right , the history could had been carried down.
My grandfather’s friend. Mr. Harold Doley. Purchased Madame CJ Walker’s home sometime back. I remember visiting that home and having the privilege of spending many nights there. I can recall being enamored at the history of the home. And also a little creeped out at night.

Madam CJ Walker should have made her daughter work in that warehouse. If she experienced working hard to create her mother's product she wouldn't have squandered the money. She was gifted everything she wanted without having to earn anything as a child so she had the same mentality as an adult.
She did work from the ground up. The girl I believe was mentally delayed and had no business sense. A Trust Fund should have been established.

Most wealthy people groom their kids to takeover the businesses they worked hard to make. Truly tragic. She didn’t appreciate the hardships and hard work of her mother.
First generation makes the fortune Second generation spends/ lose it.
Yep
Just like Cornelius Vanderbilt's fortune. His grandchildren and great grandchildren squandered his fortune.
So her daughter pissed away her mother's money and ran the company into the ground? How selfish and disgusting.
Point to future business self always have board members for your company
After seeing this, it is required that I follow you. My kids will be watching this. When you grow up poor it is so easy to spoil your children and create these unambitious entitled people. I'm not blaming Madame Walker, it's just that whatever role she played in A'leilah's life, I want to avoid that as a parent. My kids are already spoiled and entitled and I have to redirect them now, while there is hope. A valuable lesson from the past. Thank you.

Madame C.J. is of special interest to me as I was born and raised in Irvington's more humble side of town, not but a 10-minute walk from her gracious Villa Lewaro.
So thank you for creating this fine video, which not only enhances my hometown knowledge, but delivers on the fascinating larger historical picture as well

Take care 💞

The children of financially successful parents may have no ability to maintain or grow that wealth.
