More like Shin's hope, he's testing us and gambling everything he's worked on so far in hopes that we're powerful enough to walk the path between light and dark
Two things: as we have learned from Mara Sov, when light rises, darkness swells to meet it. So as we become powerful so will our enemy. Maybe by walking the tightrope of grey, we can actually bring a celestial conflict to a halt. Maybe not by vanquishing our enemy, but by making them, less dangerous. Maybe not a friend. But not so threatening. However. What world comes out of the most powerful beings in the universe embracing the very thing that caused multiple extinction level events. On the other hand, does that even count as winning? Would it be better, for us to lose, as we hold our ground fighting as our morals and principles demand us to? If guardians bring an end to the fight of light and dark by blending them into a grey, we would become, not guardians of humanity. But guardians of the universe, constantly rebalancing the scales so the conflict never rises again.
I'm of the opinion that our principles are simply wrong if they get us wiped out. As far as I'm concerned, I'm already walking in the shadows with my Thorn. It seems to me that the smartest move is to blend the better aspects of both light and dark to better protect humanity.
Stalemate can be victory, maybe by just giving life after life to hold back the Traveler and the Darkness we would win. By not letting them become strong
I always thought of such a choice. And I have made MY choice long ago... Shadows always were the Light within the Dark... and the Dark within the Light... The path of grey...

I think that to face the Dark, and survive, we cannot be only like the Traveler. Even with all of its powerful light, it was still crippled by the Darkness after their fight. We would end up the same or, most likely, worse since we as Guardians are only able to wield pieces of the Traveler's light. But if we can become more, to be able to use light and dark, than there is a fighting chance that the extinction of humanity can be overturned. If we can be balanced, we can become more than both the Traveler and the Darkness could *ever* be. We can become what they literally cannot be: *both Light and Dark.* I say this not being sure if the Traveler or the Darkness can use the exact powers of the other, but from what I can tell they are opposites in every way, even down to their shape. Thus, to rise above the fight of Light and Dark, we have to try to walk that difficult and very thin gray line.

In any case, keep up the good work!
Hey Byf, probally it will take some time 'till you read this, but here we go. I'm just some brazilian dude, and some years ago, my dad got me destiny, probally in the middle of year two. I got instantly in love with the game, the world, the exotics, the races, and when the game saw its low points, your channel helped me tap into the game's lore, preventing me from dropping it. Here in brazil, its hard to found lore tabs and mission tabs from the first game, and when i learned enough english to understand your videos, they have shown me a new face to the game, that untill that point, i didn't knew. Without you, i would not know and still be investing in one of my favorite videogame universes, so even if you don't actually read this, im posting as my thanks to your channel, for helping me explore the many worlds and stories of the game. See you starside :)
I think I know why Dregen Bane is researching the Weapons of Sorrow. He's used to fighting the servants of the Dark and the Light. Neither of them fear death, so their punishment must be more severe. I'll see myself out.
Jesus Christ dude.... it gave me chills. Again. Upon first reading the lore and seeing for myself the deception, and the need for it? Floored. I’m glad I missed all spoilers to this. Thanks for another great video for the series. It is, in a word and quite literally, epic.
Not crazy, brilliant. Created the Shadows of Yor to thin the "Guardians" that would fall to total darkness while to trying to use the Darkness to make Guardians even more powerful for the coming war.
Oh I won't deny that but at some point he might have gotten a few bolts loose in his head cause man does he have a slight obbsesion with Yor. I mean he hunted him down after he became a guardian then like in not even a year he's trying to replicate thorn or something I don't remember the exact timeline after he went overkill on Yor
@@gabrielhill4460 in a way he did because the universe needs to stay in balance. So if the traveler is pure light then the darkness need to be created to balance it. So in a way yes. But shadows are the gray area where a little bit of light and dark make something else. Thats why drifter is so strong he balances both. And why are guardian is too.
That's partially why I stood with the Vanguard. A man like the Drifter always plays both sides, always does that which he despises, always betrays. Maybe I have learned something from the Drifter, because the very act of working with him and then reporting to Aunor is almost like putting to practice the lessons we've learned from him. One knife pointed in each direction. (Dramatic? Yes, but I've been watching a lot of Byf's videos lately.)
To dance in shadows, empowered by light. To accept the wrongs that we do in our rights. To kill, to protect, to serve and to learn. To resist the temptation of a powerful yearn. To follow the paths of own Destiny we must realise in life that balance is key ....
Destiny's back story and lore just keeps getting better and better! So good and now I have a reason in game to appreciate both light and dark wielded in balance! Keep up the amazing videos as always byf.
Wow, that was dense. So, basically, Shin managed to kill Yor for wielding both light and darkness. He then made the Dredgen Vale persona in contrast to Shin Malphur to enforce this duality and to be able to confront easily corruptable/tempted Guardians by darkness. Then he proceeds to give our Guardian access to both The Last Word and Thorn to test if we are also ready to do the same and get stronger for the future conflicts in D3.
The Light may be too bright for many, but just as many forget that Darkness is just as blinding. Clarity comes with the ability to see and to see in the dark, one must have light, and it stands to reason, in the presence of light, the shadow gives definition to what your gaze meets.
I loved it. I already had in my head that Shin trusted my warlock to wield Thorn back in D1 and now here he is doing exactly that to us in D2. Shin's plan is so devious and perfect, it's just like Mara's for the Ascendant Realm. I LOVE CUNNING AND SMART GOOD CHARACTERS!!!!!
Shin Malphur’s lore is very distinctive. A guardian never risen. He was born with light, not forged like the risen. This gives me another perspective of how the traveler choses. The risen were chosen based on “compatible personality”, but it’s possible their ‘character’ was corruptible, or flawed beforehand. Which explains why our past-life memories are suppressed. The light hopes to forge a better character within the risen’s personality. Shin’s character was righteous. His personality was compatible too.
I loved this. Being a fan of this story in Destiny's lore for a few years gave me such excitement to hear about this. I love your content byf, keep it coming!

And I would rather dance in both to save everyone Comment below what you believe too and if you had any theories to about shin as well
What most guardians don’t realize is Cayde before he was a vanguard and eventually ended is he was never a squeaky clean hunter himself, all hunters in my opinion serve their own motives but when called to stand defend the travelers light when necessary
Oh shit, I thought Shin was one thing. Now I feel like the man has been playing games around me since I first heard his name. Course I'd know this if I actually read the lore books, but frankly, your delivery of them makes waiting to hear the stories worth it every single time. God, I loved reading this lore section. Just...holy hell that last section after knowing all the stuff before hand is a mind blow. I kinda imagine my hunter wanting to follow Shin's ideals. The Jews believed Gods holiness was good but dangerous to humanity, hence they oversaw rituals before ever entering the inner sanctum of a tabernacle so that they might be spared from death.

I was totally not expecting my titan to follow the path of the dredgen. But here I am, dancing in the grey.
Great video again, Byf. I'm actually listening to this one again because of the choices my titan has made as a sort of reflection on the philosophy behind the shadows of yor and their true goals, as well as the revelations that came from the invitations of the 9. In any case, keep up the good work!
As a great man once said and as for my own answer

All the sudden, I respect Shin Malphur. That is a a true guardian.
I wont give up on destiny. I refuse to
Me niether brother. You ready to walk that thin line?
Shin aka the man with the golden gun, Dregen Vale and a litttttttllllee crazy maybe
Shin is a guardian protecting and teaching guardians. That's a noble task. A heavy duty. But who is watching after him, when the time comes?
Fun fact: shadows are pieces of darkness that are created by light. Mind blown right
In that case wouldnt that mean the traveler created the darkness?
@@gabrielhill4460 in a way he did because the universe needs to stay in balance. So if the traveler is pure light then the darkness need to be created to balance it. So in a way yes. But shadows are the gray area where a little bit of light and dark make something else. Thats why drifter is so strong he balances both. And why are guardian is too.
Makes sense lol
Ok dude no need to blow my mind like that
I still get shivers every time someone in destiny says "become legend"
If these new dark powers keep me from floofing off cliffs then yeah count me in
I've waited a long time for Byf to cover this amazing bit of lore. I was not disappointed. Still hit just as hard as the first time.
10:59 so Drifter aka Dredgen Hope was a snitch himself, aye? Hehehe that's rich
@@josefzalusky7307 Lol that's actually brilliant 😂. Use his own tactics against him. A "no honor amongst thieves" type of deal 🤣🤣
And he dared to call me a snitch
Well technically yes, but... no. Since Shin was Vale, he already knew but idk if the Drifter knew that
To dance in shadows, empowered by light. To accept the wrongs that we do in our rights. To kill, to protect, to serve and to learn. To resist the temptation of a powerful yearn. To follow the paths of own Destiny we must realise in life that balance is key ....
"You either die a hero or live long enough to become the villain." Harvey Dent from The Dark Knight.
Destiny's back story and lore just keeps getting better and better! So good and now I have a reason in game to appreciate both light and dark wielded in balance! Keep up the amazing videos as always byf.
WHAT?!
WHAT?!
WHAT?!
It is too early in the morning for my mind to be this blown. AHHHH
I’m so happy that you make these because I usually can’t get around to reading lore cards and would have never known any of this. Thank you
Shin: I belive in you.
Me with Dredgen seal....
listening to this again 2 years later is um well interesting, especially with Stasis now
Wow, that was dense.
It's CONTENT like this that makes me WANT to play again. I've been bored this month so I haven't played but oof. Love me some good lore
If only TLW and Thorn didn't have PvP stuff to do...
The Light may be too bright for many, but just as many forget that Darkness is just as blinding. Clarity comes with the ability to see and to see in the dark, one must have light, and it stands to reason, in the presence of light, the shadow gives definition to what your gaze meets.
That feel when you find out that Blessious becomes evil.
Ah, the old Switcharoo
4 years later and this still gives me chills.
You're the man! Thank you for all of the great content!
My mind has just exploded. Kudos to the writers for these lore entries, they are incredible!!
I was originally gonna go full darkness but this kinda changed my mind
Jesus byf. Your narration makes me shiver. You are a blessing to destiny lore. Thank you.
light = lawful good
darkness = chaotic evil
shin = not even on the chart
Shin is the true game master.
Thanks byf love your videos
I loved this. Being a fan of this story in Destiny's lore for a few years gave me such excitement to hear about this. I love your content byf, keep it coming!

And I would rather dance in both to save everyone Comment below what you believe too and if you had any theories to about shin as well
As a hunter main, being a shadow is the ultimate freedom. And as Cayde explained, hunters belong in the wild.
What most guardians don’t realize is Cayde before he was a vanguard and eventually ended is he was never a squeaky clean hunter himself, all hunters in my opinion serve their own motives but when called to stand defend the travelers light when necessary
My bullets are sin, my weapon is sorrow.
The hidden stories of destiny are honestly some it’s best selling point.
Exactly what I’ve always wanted to do in Destiny. I’ve always wanted to become both Dredgen, yet defend The City and its people.
Oh shit, I thought Shin was one thing. Now I feel like the man has been playing games around me since I first heard his name.
Course I'd know this if I actually read the lore books, but frankly, your delivery of them makes waiting to hear the stories worth it every single time. You sir, sent chills down my spine with this one, and for that I thank you.

God, I loved reading this lore section. Just...holy hell that last section after knowing all the stuff before hand is a mind blow. I kinda imagine my hunter wanting to follow Shin's ideals. The grey or gray (however you spell it) area can lead to greater possibilities, as long as we don't falter to corruption.
