You're not alone regarding all those gloves. I don't wear a glove on my torch hand when mig welding, so I have a whole drawer full of right hand gloves that have never been worn. The left hands get trashed. If there is an amputee out there who needs a bunch of right hand gloves, let me know. Beautiful table, mister!
Absolutely beautiful table. In the future, if you would like to route out pockets into a solid piece of wood, I would recommend using a Guide Bushing for your router. They typically come in a set of different sizes and act as a bearing for your bit. Rather than trying to hog out that material all at once, you can gradually step the bit down every 1/4” until you have reached your desired depth. It’s much safer and your router won’t bounce around on you. I hope this helps.
I love how your subscribers are there to give feedback and advice, especially if they work with things like you do and experienced with wood especially. Me to I love this little builder diy creative community we are building here. I learn just as much from y’all as y’all do me. It’s so awesome!! Very grateful for all the positive support ❤️
You can also get rid of most of the waste in the pocket by using a forstner bit to hog out most of it then using the flush trim bit in the router to clean the sides....
I too was going to mention guide bushings, using those to hog most of it out, and then once you are down to your final depth you can flush up the sides to your template with that flush trim bit
Very nice table, but you forgot a very important part and there is a thin layer of foam under the tablecloth. All professional tables have this, because it is then easier to pick up cards and chips. But luckily you can put this on afterwards. For such a nice table, I would also go for a tablecloth with a printed logo or design that fits this table 😃
Yep, I agree.. I love playing poker, and the foam is a must. It has a certain feel to it, a certain sound, the cards the chips…. Even the smell of a great. It’s the same for a pool table the felt has to be just perfect…
Looks Great!! If you do another poker/gaming table in future i highly recommend adding a layer of high density foam under the felt/speed cloth. This makes picking up cards and stuff easier, adds comfort and helps with sound when dropping chips and dice on the table.
Oh, I love this video so much. You are the only person that I would set loose on a beloved piece of furniture and say go for it and just trust you because anything you do is better than anything I could imagine.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Wow, Dean what a fabulous job! Extremely impressive, would never guess this is your first poker table from scratch! I'm absolutely blown away by your creativity! You and Emily are an awesome team! Without her muscles you'd be in a big pickle my friend 😊! Beautiful, beautiful! 😊
Wow, Dean just wow!!!!!😮 My favorite thing to see you do is when you get all creative with steampunk! I am totally blown away with how you managed to make the stink punk and classy all at the same time. I love the stain color love, love love, perfection. The only thing is I wish I could’ve seen your customers reaction when you showed it to him. Especially since he gave you freedom to do what you wanted and really didn’t know what was coming, I know his reaction would’ve been thrilled and impressed, but I really would’ve liked to have seen it. Lol. Really being hats off👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 So impressive and I love watching you and your wife work together. Thank you so much for the video. What a great way to start my morning.
Awesome job. Painstaking professionalism in your work shows through in the finished product. Great tips along the way made this a fun watch. Thanks for taking the time to bring us through the build.
Hey Dean, I wish others, rather it’s UA-cam or television, would give warnings like you do about Rite flashes of light. I know that it can also trigger seizures and so on for me. It triggers migraines and vomiting. So all I do is just skip over it because you warned. Thank you for always going a step beyond.👏🏼
Looks incredible. As someone pointed out, there needs to be something between the felt and the plywood. I would even consider latex as the chosen material.
Dean, I really love how you always always do this. You don’t just focus on making it look good.(incredible) you think of short term, long-term function, and future needs.👏🏼
This huge project turned out to be amazing! The design was great and it was very helpful to follow your problem solving techniques. I have to admit that the router bit difficulties had me concerned. I'm glad that Plan B was successful. I love the extra touches you added, including the owner's initial in the pedestal design. Excellent work! I hope the owner is over the moon with the results!
What a nice project! Beautiful concept and finish, I like the idea of an extended octagon instead of the traditional oval. As stated by others I would have put down a layer of Volara foam, it does seem to help card play and also Dampens dice also creates a quieter playing surface for such games. Still a nice video and beautiful build. Somebody is very lucky to receive such a nice piece of custom furniture.
Came out looking freaking cool my dude 👌🏻 Not sure if anyone else has mentioned this but you could make a thicker template @14:40 to help reduce how much of the bit you plunge into your piece & you should only plunge in maybe about 1/8th every pass. Boy o' boy, I couldn't watch that part without feeling bad for you & thinking something horrible could happen. I'm so glad it didn't :). I've been there & making a thicker template helped SOOOO much. Also, that Glaze coat, we bought it once for our farmhouse dining table we made about 7yrs ago or so, and we did about 1/16th inch pour at a time & only did 2 coats of it. It turned out great BUT I didn't like it only b/c it was too glossy for my taste. Hopefully, this helps if you try it again. Thanks for sharing the process my dude, loved watching it :). Cheers from Texas 🍻
That is a great idea as well. Another subscriber left a comment here about a bearing that goes in the base of the router called a template guide. With those you can set your bit height and add more depth each pass. I love our little diy community with great ideas and all learning from each other. Thanks!
Gorgeous and functional to a whole higher level👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 I’m sorry am I driving you nuts with so many comments??? I’m just so impressed and so many ways that I just think you need to be praised for every little thing and big thing because they’re no small thing. If that makes any sense.😁
If the router bit goes in too deep... make the template thicker. Put something under it, between the oak and the template, or use it to cut a new template in thicker wood. Always cut in one direction to prevent tearout. And it seems you have a bit that cuts upwards: it pulls the bit out of the router. They are designed for routing edges of boards, not pockets. You can't do nothing about that. Just go really slow or replace it.
Very cool table. New to the channel, just wanted to say you can get really cool patinas in brass and copper using some ordinary household chemicals like bleach and ammonia. I remember in college putting a piece in a zip top bag with ammonia and sawdust and leaving it sit for a bit, got a very cool blue/green color. Appreciate your found object and try and see if it works approach.
Hi! Someone already said it, maybe: if you want to cut a hole into solid wood, is better if you go down little by little, no more than 1/2 inch at a time. A little tip for upholstery work: it is much better to fix the fabric underneath the part to be covered, pull it over to the opposite side, and turn underneath again to fix it while still pulling. You'll make it without using glue. Anyway, you did a fantastic job!🙏
@@DeanFurnitureArtist I don't think subs make too much difference really. From my experience the more subs you get the less the channel gets recommended. Seems to happen to a lot of people to be honest. Keep up the great work though, I love watching this sort of stuff
The way you ended up doing your tray pockets was in my opinion the best way. Would never recommend trying to hog out all that material no matter what system you used. Bravo…good job
Great job. For the pockets one way to do it would be to use multiple templates.. It looks like your template was about 1/4 inch thick. you could stack 4 of them together indexed with wooden dowels so they don't move. make your cut then, remove one layer of template and repeat. this what you are only taking 1/4 bites out of the wood on each pass.
Absolutely fabulous, you are one clever, gifted man. I couldn't visualise at the beginning, how you were going to do it. And it looks expensive, quality goods. Wow 🎉🎉🎉
Excellent job mate. First time I’ve watched a video of yours and extremely impressed 👍. Very refreshing to see the struggles included. Still trying to figure out who is the brains and who is the brawn tho 🤪. Cheers from outback Australia 🇦🇺
Absolutely AMAZING! I am a little confused on why you paid extra for the oak plywood when it is fully covered though. I understand the oak boards because they are seen but the plywood is covered on sides with metal and center with cloth. But either way you did awesome!
Thank you!! Oak plywood is stronger, heavier and has a very smooth surface which saved me a ton of time not having to prep or fill. Only about $20 more over pine.
Just FYI for an aerosol adhesive I've found to be even better than 77 was at Joann fabrics but it's ForceField Headliner adhesive. I noticed you didn't quite trust the adhesive alone (however given the temperature I wouldn't either 😅) but thought I'd share. Awesome table none the less. Only thing I'd add would be dedicated chip holder slots or the pocket to fit chip racks. Version 2 is always better than V1 right!
Nice work. Creative, solid, and sturdy. My only critique would be, if the felt would allow it without wrinkles, was to put a 1/4 " or 1/8" cushion beneath it. It allows a player to 'more easily ' dig below the cards to see them in a hand. How much did you charge for this piece. Because I need legs for my 10 seater.
Subbed! Awesome channel. Much more like what I could build and my shop is similar. I work on cars and build things from wood and metal. I enjoy some of the channels that do incredible wood working, but I'm not going to buy a full compliment of Festool or have a $10k planer/jointer/table saw... Great looking poker table. Nice design and execution.
You sound just like me LOL!! I hope to build another muscle car soon. Thinking Wagon this time so I can fit the pups and use it for home depot runs. Plus when I blew the doors of some kid in a new Camaro or Mustang they expected it from my Twin Turbo 70 Lemans.... BUT blow their doors off with a old rusted wagon now that's embarrassing 😁😂😂 Glad to have you on board.
I think the yellowness & bubbling from the resin could be from air being released from the woodgrain and because you've stained it, it is releasing a small amount of stain into the resin too. I could be completely wrong. Just a theory based on my small resin experience.
It’s a good theory. I have resined over stained wood in the past with no issues but always use Total Boat. Maybe something to do with the stain on lumber mill oak. No telling.
I’m usually all about symmetrical but when you were talking about where to place the cupholders, I actually agree with you just FYI about doing three instead of four, so it’s not so crowded and I think the people aren’t going to be as crowded. You need elbows space like you said especially when you’re eating drinking laughing playing poker. I can’t wait to see it this done because you always blow my mind but something tells me this is gonna be blowing my mind on steroids lol👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😃
U should look into maybe installing a mini-split air conditioner in ur garage. Find a company that makes them and see if they will sponsor one of ur videos in exchange for a unit. Something to consider.
Very cool table. As for the pockets in the future there are two ways you could consider making it work better. 1) make your template thicker. This will allow your router to sit higher and you won’t be plunging the full depth of the bit (it will act as if you have a shorter bit like you wanted). Plunging that full depth in a single pass is certainly not any fun of anybody- had me cringing just watching 😂. 2) You can use a decent size Forstner bit with your drill to remove a majority of material before you hit it with the router. Just stay about 1/8” from the bottom and sides (don’t drill right to the edge). This way the router just cleans up the edges and bottom. Great video man!
when your routing that deep, hog out the middle potrtion in sevreal shallow passes leaving about a 1/4 inch on the edges. then, you can use the bearing to flucsh cut the remaining 1/4 inch on the edges. takes a little longer, but it wont chatter and you wont break the bit
So freakin cool Dean!!! You & Emily crack me up. And... why you sweatin so much?!?! You act like it's HOT in TX during the Summer LOL!!! Did I mention how stinking cool this is?!?! Hoping all is well guys, Dirty Jersey out!!!
Love your work. Try Sculpt Nouveau its a blacking patina treatment for metal. I have used it and it works very well. You can rub back the finish with scotchbright pad to highlight the high spots and the seal it. Very even patina look.
One thing about you, you don't hesitate to take on the most complicated projects, they get bigger and better turned out beautifully, and you don't even play poker.🤣 TFS
Very blessed to have amazing clients that will give me full creative freedom. Goes a long way when you need to make changes on the fly over fighting to make something exactly what someone else wants.
the reason that bit is giving so much grief is because its a templet bit you want to hog out a majority of your material with a forstner bit leave the line and come back with that template bit and your template. hope this helps
I realise this is perhaps not the thing you want viewers to take away, but i now know what my next set of safety goggles will be. Great table, too, of course, but good safety goggles are a MUST have, and its good to see you being a proponent of PPE. EDIT to add: Far too many channels are somewhat cavalier about safety, so you got yourself a new sub :)
Honestly I am horrible when it comes to PPE but getting better. I do hate stuff in my eyes and my wife’s cousin lost an eye last year working on oil rig. Got a piece of metal in it that got infected. I think he is late 20s or early 30s. So that is now always in the back of my mind. Most “safety glasses” stop large items from hitting you but all the dust blows in behind them. These are great at protecting and stopping dust! I always try to share when I find a good product. So happy you took that away from the video.
Love that Steam Punk table!!!! You know I love me some Steam punk!!! ❤ So freakin Gorgeous!! How many ppl did it take to move into his home? Curious! My son is taking welding classes at Athens Tech!!!
Your wife is amazing, and strong, and a great partner and Work and probably parenting too❣️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. Plus she’s gorgeous on top of everything else👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Magnificent! But I think I need to go lay down a bit. Dean drawing a plan will take some getting used to. I know Emily is stronger than she looks.....but really, a screw? LOL
Absolutely love it,just a small piece of advice from a man married for over thirty years, don't mess with a redhead you might end up on Unsolved mysteries 😂😂😂😂🎉😂😂😂
Oh I know! She is freakishly strong for her size as well. That is why we call her the ego crusher. She lifts more then most men in the gym. She could put a hurting on me if she wanted. They say Scottish women used to go into battle with the men. I can see why now!!
As far as those copper ensco you could have superheated the copper until it turn red in the center and then the metal would have kneeled and you could have bent it much easier by hand
With routing out the pocket in the oak would have been better off using a forstner bit and hogging out the material to the depth you want and using the flush cut but in the router to clean it up.

I can’t wait to see it this done because you always blow my mind but something tells me this is gonna be blowing my mind on steroids lol👍🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😃
Thanks!!!
U should look into maybe installing a mini-split air conditioner in ur garage. Find a company that makes them and see if they will sponsor one of ur videos in exchange for a unit. Something to consider.
HOA wont allow it. 😔
Thanks. A few have also suggested a lay kit. Y’all are awesome!! I appreciate the input.
when your routing that deep, hog out the middle potrtion in sevreal shallow passes leaving about a 1/4 inch on the edges. then, you can use the bearing to flucsh cut the remaining 1/4 inch on the edges. takes a little longer, but it wont chatter and you wont break the bit
Nice, thanks for the tips!
So to save your gloves a little put a latex glove over the top. Sounds counterintuitive but the sparks bounce off fir the most part.
I will for sure try that! Thanks!
So freakin cool Dean!!! You & Emily crack me up. And... why you sweatin so much?!?! You act like it's HOT in TX during the Summer LOL!!! Did I mention how stinking cool this is?!?! Hoping all is well guys, Dirty Jersey out!!!
This summer was crazy!! AND HOT ALL THE WAY IN TO OCTOBER!?!?! WTH!!?? Even my power tools and camera said "IM OUT!! "😂
came out beautiful great work looks like a master piece
Thank you so much!
Love your work. Try Sculpt Nouveau its a blacking patina treatment for metal. I have used it and it works very well. You can rub back the finish with scotchbright pad to highlight the high spots and the seal it. Very even patina look.
Ohhh I will have to look that up! Thanks MartyB
Simply gorgeous!!!
Thank you!
You're so talented!! It looks amazing. Great Job!!
Thank you so much!
That's Awesome 😎 Love that base 🔥💜🔥🤘🏼
Thanks 😁
that is one awesome looking poker table.
Thank you!!
Fantastic as always, Dean. I'm sure your client will be very happy with that table :-D
He was!! AND.. his friends now want one. ❤️😁
Haha, I was going to say that! I knew everyone would be envious of that table@@DeanFurnitureArtist
the reason that bit is giving so much grief is because its a templet bit you want to hog out a majority of your material with a forstner bit leave the line and come back with that template bit and your template. hope this helps
Good tip. Thanks!
I don't play poker either, but this table would be enough to make me start! lol Awesome job!!!
😁😂 Thank you ❤️
WOW! Incrediable!
Thank you!
Love that Steam Punk table!!!! You know I love me some Steam punk!!! ❤ So freakin Gorgeous!! How many ppl did it take to move into his home? Curious! My son is taking welding classes at Athens Tech!!!
The two pieces are not that bad to pick up. We moved it no biggie.
I wish I had taking some classes over learning the hard way.
Your wife is amazing, and strong, and a great partner and Work and probably parenting too❣️👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼. Plus she’s gorgeous on top of everything else👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
❤️❤️
24:34 your tshirt right here is dope
😁 I love my Nintendo shirt! I actually bought two. I wish I had bought more. These are old now.
Awesome job man you should do more ground up builds
I do like the challenge. Thanks!!
Doubling or tripling of the thickness of the template would be another option to make the router work to cut the recessed areas.
Great idea! Someone else also suggested a bearing that goes in the router base so you can slowly lower the router depth each pass. Thanks
Magnificent! But I think I need to go lay down a bit. Dean drawing a plan will take some getting used to. I know Emily is stronger than she looks.....but really, a screw? LOL
😂😂 One day I will end up on a missing poster if I keep jacking with her.
That turned out pretty damn cool
Thanks man!
Great piece! Not sure what your customer's brief was, but I would have liked more steampunking on the table top as you did with the base.
Thanks. His home is very industrial. Kind of a mix of rustic and modern. He asked for industrial with a touch of steampunk.
Beautiful.
Thank you!
As far as those copper ensco you could have superheated the copper until it turn red in the center and then the metal would have kneeled and you could have bent it much easier by hand
Good tip. Thanks.
With routing out the pocket in the oak would have been better off using a forstner bit and hogging out the material to the depth you want and using the flush cut but in the router to clean it up.
Good info thanks!
Great build!
Thanks!
I like the table save the resin portion. It seems to clash.
Thanks!
Beautiful 🤩
Thank you!
No closed cell foam under the cloth? Pretty standard for a casino card table.
Thanks for the info.
How much of the corners you took out?
Nice table and I way to copy your idea.
Thanks! That build was a while back so I don’t remember exact measurements. Sorry
Bro how good!
Thank you!
Very cool. Nice work!
Thank you!
do you sell the plans for just the table top.
I didn’t save any of the measurements. Sorry.
Can you put a window air conditioner in your space?
No, HOA won’t allow it ☹️ We can not even change the flower bed with out approval. Time to move!
Do you sell the plans for this table?
I have had a few people ask. I have never made plans before and didn’t save any measurements but it’s starting to seem like I should start.
Great job
Thanks!!
Nice work! Those poor copper pipes are 💯 gonna get stomped out of shape from people putting their feet on them though lol
Thanks! I think they will take good care of it for what they spent.
Could I get a poker table made like that one
Yes you can. My Email is DeanFurnitureArtist@ gmail.com
