This channel is the ideal competency level for me. Better mechanic-ing than me so it's still interesting, but still down to earth enough and things going wrong as they normally do when we all so much as touch a bolt.

It’d be cool if you did a side by side comparison of your Mini and the Beetle, showed their strengths/weaknesses. They were main competitors back then, so it’d be neat to hear your thoughts on the two before you sell the beetle!

Great job on the beetle, leather steering wheels make a big difference in how luxurious a car feels, I changed a mini r50 steering wheel to leather recently. I like how you have even the challenges as part of the video when things should go smoothly, I think we all have moments like that and it's great to know we are not alone with those moments of "how did this part become so difficult?".

I have lost a bolt deep within an inaccessible area of my car before and as an amateur the way I resolved this problem was to buy a USB endoscope camera and a flexible pose-able magnetic pick up tool - taping the endoscope camera to the tip of the magnet tool and doing a bit of keyhole surgery - when I saw the bolt I just pushed closer and - click! - magnets are magic. Combined, those tools were about £30 and they are my backup for any other inadvisable modifications I decide to make

A trick for discharging systems (like airbags) is disconnect the battery, then touch the positive and negative battery leads together.

Bit of sill welding and a couple of brake lines and it'll be on its way! Pretty typical 18 year old car stuff.
My Boxster needed a rear brake line and advisory on rear discs and drop links this time which I didn't think was too bad for 17 years old.
Brake line done by the garage to get it through and advisories being sorted this weekend with any luck if the weather holds off.

Things have become much more complicated these days in the 21st Century, when having to remove a Steering Wheel / Airbag, than when I had to remove the Steering Wheel to enable me to remove / change the broken Headlight Control Stalk on my 1981 Russet Brown Austin Maxi 2L FFG 212X in the mid-late 1980s . . . a bit of plastic about one inch long & about 1/5 inch square in section had snapped clean off right across, meaning the Headlight Stalk in normal driving along a road, would pendulum backwards & forwards, between ( & making & breaking ) the electrical contacts, meaning depending on the level of acceleration / braking I was doing at the time, the Main Beam Headlight Flashing was uncontrollable . . . all because of a really small bit of broken plastic . . . "Grrrgh !"
N.B. 'Uncle Pete' ( A+ Really Good Family Friend R.I.P. ) who lived very close to me in Merlin Way, when I went to see him, was able to lend me a 1 1/4" Box Spanner with Tommy Bar, from his garage, so I could release the Steering Wheel Retaining Nut, to enable me to get the Steering Wheel off & to tighten the Steering Wheel Retaining Nut back up again afterwards . . . unusually my father ( R.I.P. ) did not have an appropriate tool to get me out of my unfortunate predicament !

Great work Matt. Another one of those simple jobs that requires a visit to the motor factors to get some new goodies. Back in the day, Elliot's in Coventry would have had just the item. but it's now a multi storey complex. Hello my eternal rival. I put about 12 feet of extra chrome trim in my interior, how do you feel about that? 😄 And from factory it already got quite a lot of aluminium trim in many places. I was also thinking of removing the black paint from the speaker grills and polishing them to a nice semi gloss bare metal finish.

Isn't it strange how a few little cosmetic details like a worn steering wheel and a few holes in the dash make a massive difference to a car's first impression? A few times I've noticed my local garage dealer eyeballing trade ins, saying stuff like "Leave that radio and speakers," or "Don't remove that old Garmin". It's all suction cups and double sided tape for my car.

I did a pollen filter change on a beetle that shape and vw in their genuineness put it deep within the dash and it’s a whole lot of stripping the dash to replace it which was a nightmare and I carpet cleaned my black floor mats out of my bmw at the weekend and the amount of black muckjuice that came out of them I was horrified.
