2021 - 2022 R.I.P Curtis Mayfield 🌹 it's crazy how this song is still relevant to this day. The message in this song is so clear and accurate once you listen and take a look around you. Curtis mayfield was way more then just an artist this man was a poetical prophet and i'm glad my father introduced his music to me R.I.P 🌹
It blew my young mind to find this as the 'B-Side' of the "Freddie's Dead" single. One of the most humanist, thoughtful, prophetic cats in music...his influence is still felt, his presence sorely missed.
~ Nothing really new or any new significance in music since the 1960s and 1970s in all genres. Curtis Mayfield but one GREAT classic example of what cannot be done any better. Never forget, always remember - R.I.P. the great Curtis Mayfield! My 1971 mono jam as the B-side of "Superly" 45 (1972) abbreviated version from the Roots album. Cheers, DAVEDJ ~
OK, man: Another day off, and spending several hours going through one of my favorite "spiritual" Rock\Soul-R&B artist, CURT MAYFIELD! Just one request, please (and I'm asking this of other YT media contributors): Please add the lyrics to at least some of Mr. Mayfield's songs, as the vocals are sometimes hard to follow, and it takes away from his legendary, super-powerful poetic and political messages!!!
This is easy to answer. Here you have them: "(spoken) Underground We now have to deal with our own self-destruction We cannot live on the surface of our earth any longer There is now pollution in every natural mineral And material taken from the land We have truly become a vast wasteland And now Underground How will we deal with our society Of discrimination among the people? Near to hell It's just as well What will become of our children? Underground Familiar music, familiar sound There's mutual thoughts for the Underground Long rage sight for an eternal light Future prophecy for the mass you see There'll be equal stay and equal play The Underground where none can betray The Underground The Underground The Underground There will be no light, so there can be no sight And you'll judge your fellow man, understand By what is right We'll all turn black so who's to know As a matter of fact: color, creed and breed must go The Underground The Underground (repeat first verse) (guitar solo)

@medusa7ful... Where is the link with hip hop here ? ...this had nothing to do with hip hop... jezus... it's 100 miles closer to the music of that time whatever is the genre...than hip hop... hip hop don't care about those sneaky guitar solos and vintage psychedelia... I do not like those big golden chains... their shaken dollars in hands suddenly taken away by a turbulent wind...and... why not go back to Egyptia ?... and become the new Pharaon...what a bunch of funn(k)y guys...
Frode Hylland yeah i know there's guitars in hip hop but most of the time it is sampled guitar right ! ... i mean most of the time not always...nuance... Anyway there's no 1000 Raphael Saadiq around to save hip hop from those good ol' bright clichés...
StarryLighthouse Some do sampled guitars and some don't, but that guitar solos like this does not belong in hip hop is just wrong to me, I just can't imagine anyone who wouldn't want it in any type of music :D. I think it is safe to say that songs such as "Dr. Dre - Bitch Niggaz", "Eminem - Role Model" or "Bishop Lamont - Grow Up" use real electric guitars...I saw public enemy live once with they're own guitarist who could do some serious kickass solo's from hendrix, acdc etz. so seems to me they cared about it allowing him enough time to do his thing. I changed my mind about rap music that night even though i am not a big fan.
Frode Hylland uhm i'm not an hip hop expert...you surely knows more than me... i do not disdain hip hop...not yet eheh ...i mean some 5 years ago i listened sometimes to an alternative radio hip hop show...it was rather impressive...but the best stuff is mainly underground and sound alternative ...the same problem happened to other genres... 80 % of what is under the spotlights don't deserve it... even if i still found disproportional the success of hip hop today... I appreciate more what "their parents" have done musically from the late 60s to the late 70s...even if disco can often be suspicious ... they were more brilliant souls there imo
Sadly, I have only one like to give. Guess I'll join 17,569 of my close friends. Where? UNDERGROUND!!!

Curtis was a prophet, his words and music is still revelant today, 45 years ago.
ROBERT YOU GOT THAT RIGHT....
How can he be overlooked as a musical genius
Curtis was and remains one of the greatest lyrics writers ever
Marvin's "What's Going On" was inspiration to many artists in 1971, and this is an example.
What a masterpiece. Listening this gem and reflecting on the impact some humans like Curtis had in this universe...

+Survivor2002 Me too, only I remember it as the B side of Superfly. Blew my mind as a ten year old. Ah Curtis.
Survivor2002 Curtis was the 'soul' of soul music. His influence is eternal and missed equally.
