Daniel Fisher, Sweetwater’s master of monster modulars, sits down with Analogue Solutions founder Tom Carpenter to discuss the monster synth everyone’s talking about: Colossus! Colossus is a triumph in classic synthesis and vintage-style voltage, embodying the physical, musical, and artistic architecture of an era. Really glad to see new synths like this are still being made.
now this is something you cant hide from the wife 🤣
But babe… 16 Oscillators!
Best comment on here. I don’t know why people don’t lead with that when talking about the pros of plug-ins! “How would she know?!”
Put her inside it , she will never see it 😂
Oh honey, it's something I found at a garage sale for $150…
I’m not a modular guy and wirephobic, but I can appreciate the time invested in creating a synth in the style of the ARP 2500 and other pioneering modular monsters. Definitely not in the average user’s budget, but it’s good to see synths that a top notch studio or university can use to blow their doors off.
I'm gonna start making synth like this soon but not this big like just 6 vco
Had a bunch of Tom’s synths over the years. They sound genuinely unique and undiluted. I can honestly say the Leipzig is a game changer
that last "thank you by" had me rolling 😂
I love the Synthi 100. A friend of mine had one in 1972 and it convinced me to buy the AKS which is all I could afford. Totally brilliant
Absolutely incredible. Blown away by all Tom's creation, thank you Daniel Fisher amd the team for bringing this video to the channel. Now when I see a Collosus I don't hold my breath as much.
Fantastic, I can't play a note of music... but I want one!
It looks even better than a Moog Modular!
I love it I’m blown away…. I got to get me one ….. I can dream can’t I …… thank you
I love Analogue Solutions Synths, got a Leipzig S, Leipzig V3, Fusebox and Impulse Command, such huge sounding Synths...would love a go on this :)
You should buy one and sell patches, well it would be photographs of the different patches and sell it as a nice gold lead bound book 😇
Now, I am truly captivated ...
how do you praise the pinnacle of achievement? What do you really say? "Thanks Tom" ? Sir, you have created a masterpiece.
Tom - - you is a definite rock star!!😃
This is a pretty cool design and layout. Love his way of organisation and visual feedback. That´s spot on. I probably cannot afford that but that does not matter. It´s important that it exists.
It is a mere $31299.😂
@@Christian6.1803 🥜🥜
@@Christian6.1803 I know, the link is in the video description. Synths can eat up your budget so nicely eh? :D But you see... This guy is probably not making 50 of them a day. Theres also the r&d, sourcing and so on that cost a lot. Despite of other larger systems being in the same price range, single modules can be as expensive and even more, depending on what you want. I try to see the value for sound engineers, composers, producers, universities and for music itself rather than only for myself ;)
@@ANTheWhizkid agreed with all of that. It's not overpriced. Just expensive.
With all those flashing led cables, sequencer lights and vu meter windows, Colossus in the dark looks like some amazing futuristic cityscape sitting along the bank of a sweetwater river sound flow.
That thing is a BEAST!!! I could definitely see myself buying one of these if I was rich!
Straight 70's sci-fi!!!!!
That thing is a Colussus*
i do like vernier dials!
Daniel looks genuinely happy playing Colossus! 😊 Thank you for the video it’s really fun and inspiring. Now days we can learn a lot with music apps like Moog model 15 and ivcs3 on iPad.
Superb build, most inspiring!
In a world where synths are getting smaller and more accommodating for small studios (which I love!), seeing some giant hardware being made is sooo cool!
That thing is a work of art. Thanks!
Jesus! That synth is a BEAST!
Fantastic. The EMS Synthi 100 is one of my favourite synths of all time. Great to see its heritage echoed here, although seeing it is all I can do atm bearing in mind the hefty price. Oh well. Still beautiful though. 🙂
What an incredible synth! The shots in the video are beautiful too.
Wonderful monster! Tom Carpenter is a genius! And i love how Daniel Fisher play Colossus.
The best Collussus overview I have seen, great to see Tom in person showing off his creation. Now I want one
This answers the question I had years ago: Why can't modular be two-piece one with the control the other on a long cable with just the outs and ins. Modular with neatness, or for those who want to see the control dials and switches and faders instead of cables. I would buy modular if designed like the Colossus. This synth also taught me how to spell colossus. Won't forget the spelling or this synth for the rest of my life.
Great job, it's looks awesome!
When I first saw images of this, I thought, "Well, that's just silly." But now that I understand the absolute sensibility of the design, I am consumed by a cupidity that will never be satisfied because I can't afford it. But I can dream.
(And having said that, I see how the use of a matrix rather than a set of 1/4" connectors means that you don't have to worry about input versus output --- it's settled by the circuits and you can't get it wrong. It is so inappropriate for someone in my financial position to see this beautiful machine as an obvious necessity.)
those filters are 🖤🖤
Man I so felt that first filter sweep way down in my nether region!!! Good God this beast is major league awesome
What a great video! Love this synth
This thing is very cool.
I really hope there's FREE shipping. Joking aside, what an amazing instrument and yes, I want one.
What an awesome instrument! I'd love to have one.
Truly fantastic!
Beautiful
The proud owners we need more videos like these and tutorials, congratulations
This sounds amazing!
Great work. Great design. Dreamy
When I get rich, I'm getting one of these for sure - beautiful work Tom.
13mins - Forbidden Planet Marvelousness !
Looks and sounds so beautiful 😌 ✨
Wow. Just wow. I want one.
Guys, should I drop 31g on my first synth?
This thing is the stuff of Legend. SO, SO, So grateful to Tom for bringing it to life. Thinking about buying a used car when my lease is up and financing one of these.
Love it! 😀
Amazing!!!
Incredible instrument... 🤍
Wow. Thank you for such a amazing demo.
I'd love to see a demo on the Vermona Perfourmer Synth as well.
There needs to be a series of videos by Daniel exploring this machine further! Apart from him, I'd love to hear what Alex Ball or Hainbach could create with it, but I appreciate that they are only built to order so it's not like a bunch of review models can be sent around.
One of these colossuses belongs in an art and/or design museum !!!
Watching you guys play this reminds me of a game show
Hi Wasker Basket. I totally get that. Just need those crazy long handheld wand mics. -_Daniel_
@@sweetwater exactly. Bob Barker style. I wonder who made those mics. I would imagine EV
This thing looks and sounds awesome. I hope we get more videos showing off what it can do.
19:28 is pretty epic! Amazing job, Tom.
I am going to by 3 of these tomorrow. Thanks
If you make two of them the Slim version, you could make a vertical synth stack about 12 feet high. -_Daniel_
Agreed... What an Osc ! ! ! ! Loverlee. 😁
I didn't understand a single word or moment of this vid, but still kinda enjoyed it.
I'm totally blown away. What a piece of machinery. And Dan you really knew your way around on it. Very impressive. And analog solutions, wow what can I say. Wondering what would be a price on something like that? Say for instance I got rich or something. Love it and Sweetwater my favorite toy store.
Hi Leon. Links to the current prices for the item demonstrated in our videos can be found in the Info section right under the video. Thanks for watching! -_Daniel_
Holy moly. Unbelievable.
Finally a machine to study the Brown Note Theory.
just wow! That thing sounds giganormous!
It's a monster!!! I'm drooling
Nice synth and nice spring reverb. Obviously
I can't imagine the brains it takes to make something like this
Be good at math and electric current control.
@@HOLLASOUNDS I'm good at both but that blows my mind
I liked the harmony on 15:28 the most!
Was always mesmerized by ELP with Keith Emerson's electronic wall of sounds. Back in the early 80's I really wanted a Fairlight after seeing Thomas Dolby using one told my father I wanted one he was like 50k haha yeah you better get a really good job! :p
Dolby came to school one day in.. 1988, ish. Did a lecture showing off a sampler on a Mac II. Good show. Made half of us run out and buy Prefab Sprout.
I would love to get access to this synth for a week just to record an EP or album with it.
WOW!
"Thing that goes >bing
Hi Peter. I was waiting for someone to notice. -_Daniel_
I’ll buy 5 for my Rick Wakeman tribute band
i want the portable version. you know, the one that is kit-bashed into a tesla......tesla truck... also, this reminds me of the old-school synth guys like walter/wendy and isao tomita, mort garson and the mighty keith emerson, et al. (IMO) snowflakes are dancing is the best old synth album (tomita on a system55 i believe). 2nd place is a cool recording of eleanor rigby by W carlos. 3rd is mort garson'e insane experiment called "black mass by lucifer". i learned all my bach from w carlos, except toccata &fugue in d minor from carlos curly and bouree from jethro tull, and prelude #1 from some sheet music i found. and this one time at band camp............
Tom Carpenter es un genio!
That's a good name for it
Does this mean that Sweetwater is now carrying the Colossus? If so, at what price +tax sales tax and Shipping to WA state?
Hi Jeff. Here are the Analogue Solutions products we carry:

-_Daniel_
DAMN!
Does this synth follow a West Coast or an East Coast synthesis style? Thanks.
Holy crap. I would call it a beast but Colussus is correct.
There goes my life savings! The Colossus makes my Korg Minilogue look like an old brown shoe.
With that size, it would fit the space of an old cupboard. Now your dining room is a synth room.
Wow 😲
fun
Can't wait for a vocoder option...!
The vocoder option is coming. But it requires a special 7-foot microphone. -_Daniel_
@@sweetwater my grandad literally has an old 7 foot horn speaker lol
3:36 "Menus belong in restaurants"
It only takes half an hour to fully learn your way around the machine ;0)
What’s the synthesizer version of stealing licks? That’s what I’m doing when watching a Daniel Fisher demo
Hi Sean. Steal away, my friend! -_Daniel_
Need to call my sales engineer to see if he can get me a good deal on one of these
I'm going to bribe my sales engineer with a steak dinner if he can arrange for one of these to fall off the back of a truck! Think I could swing that?
This feels like a master class in synthesis...
Hi David. Here's my SYNTH CLIPS master class series: ua-cam.com/play/PLlczpwSXEOybYYaBCTcjxxKz1QmxytbIf.html

@@sweetwater Thanks!!!, Saved playlist 👊
Can you daisy-chain up to 16 of these together for extended polyphony? It's not being mentioned on the web page.
Yup! 16 Colossuses will give you 192 VCOs, 128 VCFs, 128 VCAs, etc... -_Daniel_
Thank you for yet another great review Daniel! I would like to have routed each of the 192 VCO's to a dedicated VCF, but in order to get 192 VCF's I'd need 24 Colossuses, resulting in 288 VCO's, which are 96 VCO's too many...I could use the spare ones as LFO, but who needs 96 LFO's? #firstworldproblems
@@sweetwater So, if I want a 16-unit system, it's just $500784.00 and she's all mine!
I am somehow compelled to start a Styx Tribute band.
Hi GTJ. It definitely has the synth girth like the middle section of Castle Walls! -_Daniel_
I nust have this!
I can buy this, or I can buy two new Rhodes pianos :-)
Maybe I'll just buy both if I can afford the one it should be doable.
How much

I don't normally say this, but LOOK AT THE SIZE OF THAT THING!
"It's twew! It's twew!" -_Daniel_
32k USD or 25 Lakh INR….Jesus Christ….some day I can afford this beauty….
Very portable : I like 😁😁
Mama Mia!!
12 oscillators man man
This isn't your father's synth... it's your grandfather's 😂 - joking aside, what a wonderful machine.
