    I believe that even a medieval farmer could defeat most people who said they would kill a knight

    • @dafyddthomas7689

      1 knight easily kills 1 Peasant. The technique I would use is MANY Peasants trained with Polearms. Even knife tied on a stick. As long as our sticks are longer than Knight's weapon. Have spare sticks available for when he cuts our sticks.
      20 Peasants surround Knight. We trip him over with our long sticks. Immediately, 5 Peasants jump on top of him and pin him down. Then daggers.
      The technique to inspire Peasant Revolt is Printing Press and Astronomy and Communion in Both Kinds.

      @darthplagueis13 6 років тому +133

      Not necessarily. Medieval farmers usually weren't particularily well fed or healthy. Against someone who regularily does labour in modern times they would probably have the short end of the stick.
      Then again, against someone who spends most of their time infront of a screen they might have a decent chance.

      Try to stab through a thick jacket + padded linen + mail in a small gap at an awkward angle into a moving opponent that will do whatever he can to stop you from doing it. It’s not easy, and the Knight is not a moron. Even if you do get the tip through so what? It won’t hit a vital organ because the sword won’t even reach that far in. It’ll hurt, sure, but even if you get it through it doesn’t matter.

    Great video as always Raff! :D
    Anyways, HEMA practitioner here. The treatises that show armored fighting are generally for one of two situations:
    1) You are both in armor. Your opponent is using the same techniques, more or less, that you are. In this case, the better fighter has the advantage.
    2) You are not in armor. These techniques are last resorts meant to be what you TRY to do when fighting an opponent in armor. The reality is that they still have to worry about defense a hell of a lot less than you do, and in addition to that they probably have significantly more training than you do given their status. Think of it like knife defense. Yes, you CAN defend yourself against a knife when unarmed, but the reality is that if someone decides they're gonna stab you, your options are either run or a 90% chance that your defense fails and you get stabbed. This is true in medieval dagger defense (as shown in Fiore's treatise) and also in modern knife defense.
    Also, the thing about half swording and the mordschlag that people don't realize is that if you're not in armor, you can't just approach the armored fighter like this. A half sworded grip significantly shortens your reach and your ability to bind. If the knight is using standard blossfechten (unarmored fighting) techniques, they will probably kill you before you manage to enter. Your only chance is to bind/cover yourself as you enter, THEN change grips, THEN try to grapple or access one of the weak points. Meanwhile your opponent has a huge advantage in grappling (their armored fists), and a HUGE advantage in accessing weak points (your entire body).

      if i had to fight a person in harness with a longsword while being unarmored, i wouldn't try the murder stroke or poking the gaps while half-swording; i would try to close in and apply wrestling techniques (ringen/abrazare). this negates the reach advantage the knight has (if i was half-swording) and somewhat the advantage of armor, since armor won't protect you from locks or the leverage the sword affords me. while the armored person still has some advantage in ringen (more mass and able to injure me with basically any part of his body) i think the biggest problem would be the difference in skill: i've been training with a longsword 3 times a week for almost 2 years, but the knight probably started when he was 6-years-old :(

      @Philoglossos 8 років тому +7

      Yup haha. He also has a rondel, and probably has better training in wrestling since there are limitations to what we can safely do in HEMA (i.e. applying the Fiore joint locks/breaks/dislocations is a no no x'D).

      Totally agree, to fight against a well trained combatant in armour would be no different from suicide. An unarmored person has overwhelmingly more weak spots that his/her opponent can simply exploit. A broken finger or a slice in the arm can easily disable a common guy.

      The best way for someone to experience just how dangerous a knife attack is, would be the pen drill. For those who don't know what that is, basically take your t-shirt off, hand someone a pen (preferably a marker) and tell them to not hold back and attempt to stab you to death.
      Now try and take that pen from them without getting any ink on your body, as ink = cut/stab

    How would this one face a European knight in full armor:
    1.) Realize that she is screwed in epic proportions.
    2.) Flees from the battle.
    3.) Comes back with a powerful magnet.
    4.) Turns it on.
    Yes, that was cartoonish, but the alternative was to slap around some Heartless until the Magnet, Stop, or Gravity spells are leveled up.

    Knights in ground-melee combat would bash each other's heads and bodies until one of them fell. Occasionally your allies would get a good push in and you were able to smash some enemies that would get separated from their line.... if you were unlucky, you'd be the one to get grabbed, and smashed. Hammers and halberds rain down on you, the blows shaking your vision and making your knees buckle. You don't even feel the pain until later... once you fell, you'd be trampled under hundreds of feet and hooves, stabbed, kicked, smashed until your body was broken and you couldn't move. If you were lucky someone would put you out of your misery once the fray was won, otherwise you'd lay there with busted ribs, brain-rattling concussion, bleeding profusely for hours or more until you finally expired. Even if you survived, there's infections, concussions, fractures, sprains, and all matter of fatigue and exhaustion, your entire body is on fire, sore. Your brothers lay dead, or screaming in agony. You sleep in spurts of 30 minutes or so, when you can sneak naps in between all the smoke and stink and horns and fighting. You eat what you can, when you can, its never enough, you're lucky if it doesn't give you runny diarrhea, and you're always hungry from burning so many calories on the field, your mouth aches with thirst, your throat and eyes burn from the smoke. Everyone stinks, it smells like the worst, nastiest gym you've ever been in.
    It doesn't get better. It sticks with you forever, for eternity. And these guys lived and breathed it, and they were good at it. It's how they made their living. Now, you think any of us living in this modern age would even stand a chance? One in a million, maybe. Not me, I'd take one hit on the noggin and be so shook I couldn't even think straight. And that knight would laugh, and keep on swinging. No chance. If I had to fight him, I'd try to grab him and set his clothing on fire, or wet his armor with oil and set it alight, or toss shaved metal in his face, or some other uncouth tactic because I wouldn't last five seconds against him in a fight.

    Honestly, in many films, armor appears to be made of wet cardboard. People end up with swords thrusting straight through plate and out the back....
    Myself, if I were to face a knight in armor while I had limited armor, my first thought would be to run and hope that he tires before I do, not because I could then beat him, but because I could get away and survive. And similarly versus a samurai. If I were absolutely cornered, I would try to take advantage of the limited field of vision that a full plate helm gives, I guess, but really, I think I'd be dead. Maybe the best thing to do would be to try to close the distance very quickly so I could grapple? I doubt this would work terribly well but it might give me a slightly higher chance of surviving.
    Half-swording and murder strokes usually seem to assume that both parties are decently armored, although I could be wrong.

    • @Philoglossos
      @Philoglossos 8 років тому +36

      The knight would probably outrun you/not tire before you xP. Knights were professional warriors that trained extensively in their armor (which didn't actually weigh all too much). Unless you run a lot, you're probably fucked x'D. Also, I'd say grappling is actually a bad idea, both because both warriors will be trained extensively in unarmed combat, and also because the last thing you want is to have your face shattered by an armored gauntlet haha. As for the mordschlag, actually no, it is shown in some sources being used by unarmored individuals. Blades only cut when they slide - you can hold a sharp blade without hand protection and not get cut, even if you're hammering the hilt into someone's face. Obviously you have to be careful, but its absolutely doable.

    • @Dantick09
      @Dantick09 8 років тому

      Assuming you survive after closing the distance, I would try a take down and run. Even when he is on the floor he can kill you unless you manage to disarm him which is near impossible.

      @blakewinter1657 8 років тому +25

      You raise an excellent point, but I happen to be a distance runner :D Not a great one, but I think it would be my best shot. And I know what it is like to run with a lot of weight on your body, because I've done it for training. It really does decrease your ability to run pretty substantially when you are carrying it around. Now, armor may be easier to carry than the weight vest, simply because of how it is distributed on your body, but still...

      Yeap, that's the key point I think many of the boasters are missing: The knight has been trained from a young age in fighting and use of his armor. He is, or is supposed to be a *professional* combatant, likely expected to actually kill people (and maybe has done so already).
      Then there's the fact that actual violence is a pretty nasty and terrifying thing that most people in civilized societies nowadays (fortunately) don't have experience with.
      I've seen a few violent events during my life (drunken brawls essentially), and the general response from other bystanders has been complete shock, to the point of completely freezing and being able to do nothing but trying to pretend they aren't there so none of the aggressive people actually fighting wouldn't notice them. You know, not even being able to call the cops or something.
      Sparring can grant experience in dealing with a human opponent, but in sparring there's no actual threat from the other person, whereas if you fight a knight in full plate, and know that the guy wants you dead... Well, it's a terrifying, even paralyzing moment when one is reminded of one's mortality and one realizes that his/her life just might end now, in severe pain at that.
      I don't think all that many modern people would actually beat a knight in a duel, even if they're trained in HEMA and the use of armor.

    • @AnthonySforza
      @AnthonySforza 8 років тому +5

      Oddly, that's something I've noticed in more recent times, is that growing up, my concept of a knight in full armor if this guy that's so metaled up that he has to lumber around like a robot or something. You know, like the whole "crane to put them on a horse" type of thing. Namely as that's kind of what we were taught in schools. That said, I've seen some of the knight armor that's reproduced from actual armor from back then and... it's looks pretty damn mobile. I talked to one guy that had it made for him (Like I'd assume the knights of old would have) and he'd said that his armor fit like a glove and that it's actually pretty easy to maneuver in. That most people look at it and think "All that weight, it must be hard to move" when the distribution of that weight isn't like it's all in one place. Also the whole "Training with it since being young" thing, surely the weight wasn't that much of a problem. Perhaps the lack of ventilation would be, but still.
      +RuSosan
      Oddly enough, that's what I try to tell people, that when it comes to things like war, the only preparation is experience. Sure, you could read books and manuals and it's good to at least have an idea, but even in a modern age, you can train a lot, yet the first time most people hear an AK go off like "Klak-klak-klak!!!" in their direction, their heart's going to be in their throat. I imagine that it's the confidence of having been through enough of those situations and coming out alive that kind of gives someone the perspective to not have that happen. Same thing with fighting, I suppose.

    Knights did not represent a large number of soldiers in a battle for being high maintenance cost units, such as the high value of their armor in his time. I believe that the best way to deal with a knight would teamwork, a formation of infantry with polearms, surrounding the knight looking for gaps in their joints helping the ally Knight to fight against this opponent.

    Seeing as how I've never been trained in formal combat, the best way for me to best a knight is to put as much distance between him and I as I can. I'd probably say about a continent or two.
    But if he was fully plated, and I was actually trained and likewise fully plated, I might try to deflect any attack with my shield (like hell I'm fighting a knight without one) and, while half-swording, jab him with the hand guard in the neck for a mini-murder stroke. I'm not familiar with how durable chain armor is, but my hope is that I can hit something vital.

    My methods for fighting a knight, in order of preference: Run like hell, maybe set up a few impromptu traps along the way (and by "traps" I mean things like "knocking over objects for him to trip over as I'm running past"), and find a better position to deal with him.
    Second best option: shoot him. I don't necessarily mean with a firearm (crossbows were pretty good about penetrating armor, which is why the Pope tried to ban them), but SOMETHING that lets me shoot at him from cover.
    Third best option: Poleaxe, spear, or similar distance weapon. The more distance I can put between myself and the highly trained professional warrior who is accustomed to athletic movements for sustained periods even while weighed down by his equipment, the better.
    (And all of these presuppose that I'M not a knight myself. Gimme dat armor!)

    Fighting a knight is really very simple. .308 from cover at around 300 yards should make short work of him. should be out of range of anything in his arsenal and, as you are in cover, you will be a difficult target if you happen to be wrong. the round should go through a knights armour like it would basically any other semi hard surface. as a bonus the armour will keep most of the mess inside.

    I was one of those people that underestimated knights, and how full plate armor (for example) worked. Perhaps from the same sources you talked about, unrealistic games, badly done documentaries (ikr), movies/tv series, etc. But after watching some youtube videos and playing more "realistic" games and actually thinking a little bit (lol) I realized how stupid I was. But still, there's a ton of disinformation of the same sorts about archery in those times, and maybe earlier, sometimes from the same people that gave me the more realistic and correct image of a knight or warrior of old times. And so far I've only seen one person giving another image to archers of those old times that actually makes more sense, and supposedly there's old books that actually shows those more natural and effective techniques, and that person is Lars Andersen. Unfortunately there's still no change on the way archers are depicted in all types of media and I would like to see more of that. Specially in games because I would like to have fun playing as a real good effective archer.

    As a modern student of MMA, with some experience in amateur competition, the concept of fighting a fully plated, well disciplined and trained Knight is TERRIFYING. That said, if I had to fight one, I would go to my one skill that could be better than theirs: GRAPPLING. I'd try to feint to provoke a defensive reaction, then immediately lunge in for a tackle. Once on the ground, I believe I would have the advantage- students of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu know what I am saying, but when you hit the floor with a BJJ fighter who knows more than you, they can control you like a cheap toy. I'd try to use my greater understanding of ground fighting to tire out the Knight until I could get a dominant position from which to attack a limb with joint locks. I have zero experience in swordplay, but pugilism studies have shown that there are fundamentals in hand-to-hand with or without melee weapons. My only chance would be use footwork to avoid attacks till I could drag to ground, exhaust him, then draw dagger and start hunting those weak points. No chance of success if he isn't tired. Also, at 6'2, I am considerably larger than most Knights were- I'd be considered a giant back then. Perhaps that could be a bit of intimidation factor?

      I think they were much bigger than average on account of being selected for their talent and SIZE. Just like professional athletes today are selected and trained. Size is HUGE advantage in hand to hand combat. So most of "knights" were members of retinues of major landlords selected for their ability to fight and equiped at landlords expence. That was their game and they were good at it. We have Visby for proof.

    • @CptRyaffio

      Many Interests wasn't most of this "selecting" done based on who the parents were, as in only nobility got to be knights? So the bigger ones probably were most successful, but you also had the all the inbred children with unhelpful genetic traits who also got to be knights.

      If I understand Matt from Schola Gladiatoria correctly, knights did learn to grapple. It is one of the more effective methods against another knight. And since they expected to meet a few on the field of battle, I expect the also trained that. Plus, according to Ian LaSpina of Knyght Errant, plate armour prevents over extension of joints.

      Lvl100MagiKarp Splash That strategy only works if you are physically strong and agile enough to tire them in the first place. Making a living by chopping people into bits? This isn't chopping trees for a living. Very little of what a knight does would come down to that.

      All your buddies will have no armor or proper weapons against a knight, meaning all of you can die just from their hardened iron gauntlets hitting you like a train. If you try to hit them you'll break knuckles, kicking is dumb since you can easily be stabbed, or they can just resort to a sidearm, a dagger to easily dispose of five unarmed unarmored inexperienced opponents.

    I know how to fight a knight.....he pushes me to the ground and pulls my head off and then tosses it to my mates. i.e Sir Gregor Clegane, Game of Thrones. But seriously these guys job is to kill...you. My hobby is boxing, and HEMA...when I get time.

      The best way to defeat a knight is by turtling. Be in a formation in a group where no part of you in exposed. I think the best formation is the front line crouching with there shields up and the second line putting their shields on top of the first line Guy's shield. This makes the front line guy almost impossible to hit. Then the front line guys just have to strike out from the gaps the shields would make. It would also be important for the formation to keep moving to put pressure on the knight.

    I view most combat as an exercise in probability. The anti armor techniques have low probability success against a resisting opponent, especially if the opponent isn't limited to the same low probability attacks. They are going to work some times, but I would look for any alternative before betting my life on something with such a low chance of success. If I were to fight in such a situation I would attempt to use neutralize both our swords in a bind then try to win in the grapple. I accept this is as low a probability of success maneuver as half swording or the murder stroke, but it has the advantage of protecting my fingers with the cross guard while I attempt it.

    I agree fully with you. I could write an essay, but I'll refrain from that 😄. A knight trained from early youth to be Elite. 2, they understood their armour, the rich had specially tailored armour made to suit their needs. 3, a sword against flesh is a man devouring monster..... especially in the hands of one trained to wield such a beast. Against armour it became a versatile tool so to speak. 4, two knights didn't just slug it out. It was a game of skill until one got worn out or made a mistake, nobody simply ripped open a visor and delivered a killing stroke. I could go on, but I'll leave it there. I like your insights

    Yes a knight in full plate armor is difficult to kill. But it is also silly to assume that a knight who have trained all his life in combat can deal with a couple of seasoned soldier who are also peasent, armed with the right weapons when out numbered. How many times have history proven that supposed super "knight, samurai, red coats" are beaten by properly equiped peasent, low class soldiers.(sometimes under equiped!) There are no the definitive advantage. A knight is still a human with 2 arms and 2 legs, facing 2 lightly armored but equipe opponent would put the knight in disadvantage regardless.
    How about agincourt, a battle with over whelming knights on the french side and properly armed peasents(or mix) mecenaries. What happen to those Knights?

    Bassicly you should ask your self would you be able to take on a navy seal or spaznats? If the answer is no, what makes you think you stand a chance against the medieval version of those guy's in a suite of armor?

    Metatron, I hope you weren't trying to say that that sword is a 'longsword' (5:55). That is a single-handed arming sword (Also sometimes referred to as a 'knightly' sword), which would usually be used with a shield. On that note, I wish you would have mentioned that knights typically carried shields, which are severely underestimated since videogames don't know how to do shields right.
