  • Today Sarah is watching GoodFellas (1990) for the first time! GoodFellas (1990) is directed by Martin Scorsese and stars Robert De Niro, Ray Liotta, Joe Pesci, Lorraine Bracco, and Paul Sorvino.
    As far back as he could remember, Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) always wanted to be a gangster. He gets his wish and over the course of many years, Henry and his friends Jimmy Conaway (De Niro) and Tommy DeVito (Joe Pesci) commit various crimes. However, Henry's life slowly unravels, and his once glorious lifestyle turns into a chaotic mess filled with tragedy.

    Goodfellas and the first two Godfather movies are the gold standard of mob movies; congrats for getting "Goodfellas" under your belt! A few years later Deniro/Pesci/Scorsese did "Casino" which is almost "Goodfellas Goes To Vegas", equally essential. (they had earlier done "Raging Bull" together). Johnny Depp and Al Pacino in "Donnie Brasco" is also a must-see. DeNiro and Scorsese started out with the indie-mob movie "Mean Streets", with Harvey Keitel. Those three did "Taxi Driver" together. And Scorsese and De Niro did the excellent (and different) "The King Of Comedy" and "Cape Fear". And of course De Niro, Pesci, Scorsese, Keitel and Pacino just did "The Irishmen" together a few years ago. You watch that after you've seen all the others!!! GREAT REACTION!!

    Fun fact: The comedy "My Blue Heaven", starring Steve Martin and Rick Moranis, is kind of a follow-up to "Goodfellas", and is based on Henry's life in the Witness Protection Program, though the names have been changed. The film was written by Nora Ephron, who was married to Nicholas Pileggi, who wrote "Goodfellas". They did research together and came up with both films, although "My Blue Heaven" was actually released one month earlier, so you could argue that "Goodfellas" is a prequel. Either way, it's not a great film by any stretch of the imagination.

    Hi Eric and Sarah so a few things the movie leaves out
    Henry had Dyslexia and Expraxia so reading was next to impossible for him this is what lead him to resent school because he did try but teachers were thinking he was screwing around.
    the reason Tommy's mother didn't give him an open coffin was simply because THERE WAS NOTHING IN THE COFFIN. To this day Tommy's body has never been recoverd.
    Also Paulie and Karen were having an affair and he tried to force himself onto her when she turned him down.
    The FBI Agent interrogating Henry and Karen was the actual agent not an actor.
    Also Henry was kicked out of Witness protection because he kept getting into trouble. So ever since then the only way he can make any money is by constantly re living his life in the mob. So it's not surprising he became a drunk.

    "The Godfather" and "The Godfather Part 2" and "Goodfellas" and "Casino". And "Donnie Brasco". Those are the top five (in the modern era). "Mean Streets" and "The Irishman", Scorsese and De Niro's first and last mob movies together are also great. "The Freshman" and "Prizzi's Honor" are the best mob comedies. DEFINITELY don't miss "The King Of Comedy" or "Cape Fear", two of De Niro and Scorsese's best films together (and not mob films). "Cape Fear" was their biggest hit together, a big movie of the 90s.....and NOT ONE REACTION for it yet. "The King Of Comedy" is another one: huge influence on "Joker", a classic movie with not one reaction yet. Someone has to break the barrier!

He didn’t want to come back I guess..there is a pretty disturbing interview when a really drunk Henry hill is at the Howard Stern show and spiders sister calls in pleading to Henry to tell where his remains are so they can give him a proper burial

      Even besides the final straw of taking out a made man, I have the feeling that Tommy had been painting a bigger and bigger bullseye on himself with his psycho antics for quite a while. That stuff really starts to draw the kind of attention that’s more trouble than it’s worth to the really big guys.
      I doubt there’s anyone still alive who can truly say what happened to Tommy. There were some accounts here and there over the years which make it pretty certain that a bullet in the head is very tame compared to how he most likely really went out.

    • @eddiepiszczek4820

      @@0okamino According to John Gotti, he was the button man on the Tommy hit. Don't know how true it is, but ex mobster Michael Franzse says the same thing. And from what I've read, you're correct, the bullet in the face was, by far, the least of his issues.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino 2 роки тому

      @@eddiepiszczek4820 I wouldn't doubt it. Gotti was good friends with Billy Batts, so it would be even more personal than the fact that Tommy took... _unsanctioned action_ against a made man.

    • @eddiepiszczek4820
      @eddiepiszczek4820 2 роки тому +2

      @@0okamino From what I understand, Bats wasn't the only made man Tommy whacked out. As a side note, in Henry Hills book, he talks about how Paulie sent Tommy in to that restaurant to scare the owner into going to Paulie for help because Paulie had been trying to get control of that spot for quite awhile on the downlow. I bring that up because it's suspected that Paulie used Tommy as his pit bull always with the expectation that he was gonna take Tommy out one day. Henry said that it was actually Paulie who gave up Tommy to the Gambinos.

    Hello, I enjoyed your reaction. I had seen Goodfellas before. The real Henry Hill, who Ray Liotta portrayed, did enter witness protection as portrayed in the movie, and stayed in that for some
    years. Later with passing time the people he had known had passed or were removed from circulation in prison, and he felt safer again. So he left witness protection, and went public, telling his story. He published a memoir of his life. That book was the basis of this movie, and he collaborated with making this movie. I saw a video of an interview with him in this public phase, and in there he made a comment that made me want to write my comment here to repeat that to you. He said that 97% of this movie was an accurate portrayal of their lives. I had come here to repeat that. Another thing he said in that interview, was that that lifestyle was horrible, that everyone he used to know from then was now either dead or in prison.

    This is definitely a classic and a great introduction to this style of film. Some of my favorites are:
    The Departed (a bit newer but huge
    Ensemble cast)
    Donnie Brasco( based a true story)
    Casino(another based on truth)
    Heat (though it's more a heist movie
    Vs Mafia but same vibe)
    Looking forward to your next video whatever it may be. Much love to you both.
