The drill/saw that chases you isn't invincible. You can down thrust it like other enemies if you can get above the saw. A few hits and it stops for a few moments.
Personally I love all the shovel knight franchise I'm a big fan of the knight with his shovel, I've completed the first game with all the contect ( including 4 dlcs and showdown ) with 104 hours And I don't have any words to discribe the perfect game that shovel knight is, definitelly it's my favorite indie game all of time I'll be buying on switch next week, I want to play it as soon as possible Thank you for your review nintendolife :3
So does this game also take place before all the DLC campaigns? Because if it does, I find it really fascinating and weird that this franchise is on a reverse timeline, with each new entry taking place further and further back into the past.
My big issue with this game is for. Roguelite there isn't really much of a sense of progression. In Hades, when you died you could buy a permanent upgrade to make the next run easier. In Shovel Knight Dig, all you keep are some of the gems and lose all the power ups you earned on your run
If you played the og shovel knight, they *do* take a bit of getting used to, with most of the game designed around auto shovel drop being a thing. They did later make an update to shovel drop yourself, but it does NOT play well with the og design.
I had not been up to any of the 2 recent games and unfortunately lost interest on both after hearing they are roguelikes. Cool for people who like those kind of games but I hope the next Shovel Knight game is more like the original in design.
I know what you mean, though I am enjoying Dig more than Pocket Dungeon. Mostly I’m looking forward to Mina the Hollower, YCG’s next big non-roguelike game.
As a HUUUGE fan of Nitrome's flash and mobile games (that also are brimming with quality), i'll get this one eventually, maybe after playing Bomb Chicken
Length of game is definitely a disappointment, but if they were to make a series out of it with a Dig 2 based on this engine and art style that would be cool
I am a huge Shovel Knight fan and Pocket Dungeon was incredible!!! Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed by Shovel Knight Dig I mean it is ok but it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
I bought the game cause I liked Shovel Knight and i didn't really have anything else to play so i thought I'd give it a go. I hate the game. I feel like the difficulty is more focused on overwhelming the player and rushing them with the giant saw blade and forcing the player to auto pogo (unless that's something I can turn off) makes some areas harder then they need to be. Feels like the controls are fighting me to make the game harder.
You know that there are options to increase your health + damage in the options with no penalty right? This complaint is a non issue when you can tweak the difficulty to your liking
@@ArabLetsPlays Right of course the difficulty options. That doesn't change anything, I mean it does but I shouldn't have to go into options and fine tune the experience. That should have already been done. I've beaten Shovel Knight, This game is trying to be Shovel Knight but roguelike and it doesn't feel like Shovel Knight. It feels like someone trying to emulate Shovel Knight and not understanding balance and then adding the options as a DIY solution.
@@zelatoth "this game should be tailored for my exact skill level"... What a load of BS. It has difficult settings for if you find it to hard, use them.
I can't be the only person who would love to see Plague Knight playable right? Eh, beggars can't be choosers. Besides, this game took a while as is, and is pretty dang good as is. I will respect the process it took to bring this game to us. I am loving the game so far. One way or another, have a good day/night everyone!
I feel Nintendo Life was being *over positive* with this review. I've spent around 11 hours so far in this game and while the gameplay/music itself are great, being *so short with an abysmal story and overly repetitive* makes this game *way less appealing* the the first shovel Knight game (in fact, the user review score on Steam *has dropped significantly to "Mixed"* since launch and I can totally see why). I feel they should've spent more time on better in-depth gameplay/storytelling IMO.
Very good review. Having played and liked Treasure Trove (beating all but King od Cards, cause I really didnt care for that one and thought it was by far the weakest of the games), this to me is the best Shovel Knight game yet. Its 100% a 1-more run kinda game, pretty addicting, looks great, sounds good, and has some overall none-too-pretentious cheevos aka "Feats". If I have one complaint with the game, its how getting hit once removes a following item; key, egg, etc - because I came across a pit of spikes I could no longer cross without taking a hit, and since a certain key fell into the spikes, it became unobtainable. Seems like a little oversight on their end, but other than that, yeah, this one is highly recommendable. If you think this game is "too short", consider there might and most likely will be DLC coming
I like the king of cards gameplay actually it's the card game I can't grok, I just hate losing a card for failing so early game I feel like I can't use my good cards cause I feel they'll all go bye bye.
I really hoped it would be more like Steamworld Dig. With the time pressure and rogue elements there are already 2 heavy arguments for me not to dig it.
I thrive on the honest negativity about the controls in the comments! I'll happily play Smash, & not buy this game. Wish we got Zion's personal thoughts.
I hope to see a shovel knight sequel with this type of graphics and both shovel knight and shield knight playable.

this is the first in the shovel knight timeline
I hope the "Death by a thousand cuts" is a reference to the new bullet for my valentine album, I know Zion has quoted them before.

This game is very difficult but it's fair and I can't stop freaking playing it!!!! This game looks absolutely beautiful on the OLED btw
Might wanna check out the accessibility options, you can get stuff like more max health and extra attack damage without any humiliation or penalty
@@cryodual yo i didn't know that thanks for telling me!
Some were saying the controls suck on this.
They kind of do

Looked good until "difficulty is brutal" and the constant pressure from that drill thing we're mentioned. Hate being rushed in games
I think I heard somewhere that you can make the drills go slower
There are lots of accessibility options by the way.

I totally agree with you, I’ll probably pass on this.
Roguelites are unfortunately too repetitive and get boring fast for me. Looking forward to mina the hollower though.
That's sucks because they are literally design to have infinite replayability
I thought this was a straight metroidvania I made a big mistake I hate roguelikes
I can't tell you how many games I was super excited for and then skipped because they're rouge likes and/or procedurally generated.
Great game.... definitely wish it had more content. Hoping for patches/DLC that could expand upon the game.
@Fundachi great to hear! Thanks!
Game Is Overpriced By About $10
It’s overpriced on every console
Currently on sale for $15, $10 cheaper than MSRP

Bomb chicken is also great, nice to see nitrome getting lots of appreciation

Waiting and hoping for a physical version for this and Pocket Dungeon. Please make it happen Yacht Club Games 🙏🏻
Everything about this review is accurate. Good job.
I got it on Apple Arcade and I love it
Okay, you had me at bomb chicken.
How is it that short when it took so long to come out? That surprises me. Meanwhile, when is the PS4 release?
I hated shovel knight and rogue likes aren’t my thing, but I’ll still try this one out
Love shovel knight but I absolutely detest roguelikes so I’m gonna pass
I am a huge Shovel Knight fan and Pocket Dungeon was incredible!!! Unfortunately I was a bit disappointed by Shovel Knight Dig I mean it is ok but it isn't as good as I hoped it would be.
I wish YCG would make a sequel to the original. I want to know what happened after the final battle
It’s also released on apple arcade. So if you don’t have a switch you can still play it.

the mega saw is pretty slow, you can dodge is VERY, VERY easily, you can also stop it for a few seconds by pogoing on it

Must've been added in the latest patch update.
Why does this remind me of that mobile game called pocket mine? Does anyone remember that game?

Very interesting. This is getting mixed reviews on steam
Steam really isnt the best place for game reviews, lately its becoming kinda like Rotten Tomatoes is for film, just ...not that terrible
I really hoped it would be more like Steamworld Dig. With the time pressure and rogue elements there are already 2 heavy arguments for me not to dig it.
Fantastic game
It's a Roguelike, huh? I thought it was a Metroidvania, but then that's probably because the name makes me think of Hollow Knight and Steamworld Dig.
Love it! ❤️
Love the original but this one aside from the visuals doesn't appeal to me. It feels limited & the rougelite genre is starting to feel tired.
Dang man all these indie games always have rogue elements. Ain’t nobody got time for dat.
Id rather have short and sweet. Dense quality
Hot take I don’t really like the new art style I just think it lacks a lot of the charm of the original
Whoa!
Too bad this game runs terrible on Switch tho, in the last level the game lags a lot
Aw what really? Is it likr unplayablr bad cuz i planned getting this on switch
Looks like I'll wait for a sale. Looks alright, nothing special.
