Hi Canadian In a T-shirt, from your experience which invest is best for short term and how much roughly could you get a return if you invested $10,000 for one year?
@@johntes3329 Do not invest in the short term! If you need this money one year from now, do NOT put it in the stock market. Keep it in a High Interest savings account instead! In the short term, the stock market is volatile and you basically have a 50-50 chance of losing money but in the LONG TERM, over the course of 5+ years, you are essentially historically guaranteed to make a profit!

A tip I learned opening a Questrade TFSA: *you don't need to deposit the initial $1000 all at once* . you can deposit a minimum of $1 into the account at anytime, the account just won't be officially activated (you won't be able to trade) until you have the $1000 min balance in it.
@@williamsim5878 You have to be 18 years old to open an account on your own. If you are below the age of 18, your parents will have to invest on your behalf. I wish I had gotten into investing when I was your age, way to go! 😁

Thank you for this. I've had an RRSP for 20 years and I was recently given a large sum of money for inheritance and have been told to open a TFSA and the TD rep made it all sound hard as hell. Once the inheritance cheque clears, I'll be opening a QT account with your link and look into the world of stocks.
You got it buddy! That's a good call! Banks are good for a TON of things but whenever you talk to a bank rep, they are basically just salesmen trying to sell you on their banking products. It's in their best interest to convince you that you cannot do it on your own and that you NEED them to do it for you!
Thank you very much for this series. Your videos are great. I just opened my account and added 2 ETF's as my first buys. Thank you again, you represent Canada very well. Keep up the great work.
Remember do not invest in the short term.... if you need money for a down payment in the next year or two, I wouldn't recommend investing in the stock market since there's a decent chance you can lose money. In the long term, 5 years or more the stock market is basically guaranteed to be profitable but the short term is far riskier....
I can definitely do a video like that but in the meantime, check out my playlist on my favourite stocks and ETFs to invest in: ua-cam.com/play/PLj8bU3AuW2qFD4sCsCxXdaAADlyiP8bqB.html These should give you a diversified portfolio with exposure across various industries in Canada and the US =)
This is very interesting, I have opened an account with Questrade but have lost a lot because I was scared on how to make the trade. I will be following your training to learn from the best. Thank you.
Check out my TFSA video to learn all the rules regarding contribution room! ua-cam.com/video/i_bWf1NyUbE/v-deo.html If you sell stocks inside your TFSA and make a profit (capital gains) this does not affect your contribution room directly unless you decide to withdraw that money out of your TFSA and then on January 1 of next year, you will regain that withdrawal amount. The main point is that any profits you make in your TFSA (capital gains or dividends) does NOT count as contributions! It's totally tax free and worry free! Let's say you maxed out your TFSA and then you made an extra $5000 of capital gains inside your TFSA. This $5000 will NOT push you over the limit. You get to enjoy that extra $5000 and continue to invest with it! I hope that helps! =)

What do you think about only holding TSX stocks like TD/BMO in Wealthsimple Trade because of no commission? The idea being I can purchase a few shares here and there?
If you invest with WealthSimple Trade, I would ONLY hold TSX stocks. WealthSimple is a GREAT platform for CANADIAN investments because of the commission free trades. There are still a lot of limitations with WealthSimple which I will talk about in my comparison review but in terms of minimizing fees, you can't beat commission free trades. Just make sure you only hold Canadian investments with WealthSimple. If you want to invest in US stocks and ETFs, definitely use Questrade. WealthSimple's conversion fee EVERY time you buy or sell a US stock will bleed you dry.... (it's how they make money lol) I'll get into more details in my upcoming review so stay tuned for that! =)

My son is 14. He has saved some money and wants to start investing. Do you know if he can use Questrade independently or would I have to do it on his behalf until he's 18?
Wow! That's amazing for your son to want to start investing at such a young age! When I was 14, I just wanted to spend my money on junk food and video games 😅 Unfortunately, he won't be able to open an investing account in his name until he's 18, you would have to invest in his behalf. Have you been putting money into his RESP? If you haven't maxed it out, your son can give you his money and then you can contribute that money into your son's RESP and you'll be able to earn free government grant money (up to $500 per year) on top of the tax-free investing. Adrian, I found your channel last week and have watched almost all of your videos by now! I really appreciate the value of information you provide in a such a easy to understand manner, but most importantly the authenticity you display. What advice would you give to a student who will be graduating soon, living with their parents rent-free, and has 30-40k student debt to pay? If they were to have a decent amount of money saved up, do you think it’s wise to invest it in ETFs and other stocks? Or should they keep that money for a house down-payment?
Hey Nadeem! Welcome to my channel and thank you for watching all of my videos! 🙏 Congratulations on graduating soon! I know how exciting and terrifying it can be, especially when you have to start paying back those student loans....This is a difficult question to answer since it depends on so much (your income, risk tolerance, time horizons, etc) But generally this would be my advice. If the interest rate on your student debt is low, around 3%, then I would suggest that you focus on investing rather than paying off your student loans faster. With investing, you can earn far more than 3% per year in returns but of course it's not guaranteed. If your student loans are higher, let's say 6% then you can still get better returns with investing but paying off your loans is a GUARANTEED 6% return which nice and gives you peace of mind. In that situation, I would probably do both. After you have an emergency savings fund filled up, I would invest about half of your excess money and use the other half to pay off the loans. If you're planning a down payment on a house in the next 3-5 years, you should also start adding money to a High-Interest Savings account for that as well! I hope this makes sense! I will be making a video soon on how you should invest / save money based on different common scenarios for Canadians so stay tuned for that! =)
If I could go back to being young and living with my parents, I would continue to educate myself on finances because we are not really taught this in school. (Especially TFSAs and RRSPs for Canadians.) All of the information I have learned about DRIP accounts TFSAs and RRSPs has been from watching Canadian in a t shirt videos on those subjects. Also, good book series is Rich Dad Poor Dad. It was written 20 years ago, but it is still very relevant. I read it on hoopla through my local library (for free). You should take advantage of living with your parents by being careful with your money. Don't overspend on things you don't really need just to seem cool or be like every one else. Pay off your student loans quickly, which will build your credit and reduce the amount of interest you have to pay, so they will get paid off even quicker! Good credit will help you in your future. Watch Canadian in a t shirt's videos about investing in long term DRIP accounts. I wish I would have been wise and gotten myself at least one DRIP account going when I was in my 20s. Good luck to you!!
Great video Adrian , there's others i just open and turn off right away .Your's is always informative and easy to understand . still waiting video on non dividend TSX small cap growth stock picks .
Thanks David! I really appreciate the feedback and thanks for sticking through my videos until the end! I'll definitely be making a video on my favourite Canadian growth stocks but I'll be upfront, I very rarely invest in individual small cap growth stocks... unless I want to have some fun. When it comes to small cap growth stocks, I'd rather diversify in an ETF rather than trying to pick the needle in the haystack.... But I will be making more videos on growth stocks soon! =)
Yes you can definitely transfer money and investments from another bank into a Questrade TFSA. I'll be making a whole video on how to do that but it's pretty straightforward. You can transfer the cash amount from your bank to Questrade. The good thing is that this will NOT count as a TFSA withdrawal or contribution since this money is never leaving the TFSA umbrella! Also, be prepared that your bank will likely charge you a transfer fee, usually between $40 and $150 but the good news is that Questrade will reimburse you this transfer fee up to $150. I hope that helps =)
Hey Adrian, I'm a new viewer and already a big fan! Thanks for sharing your wealth of knowledge!! I will be opening my first Questrade acct shortly (in weeks) in part thanks to your fantastic videos!!
Thank you Kimmy! I really appreciate those kind words and I'm glad you found me! I'm so happy to hear that you'll be opening an investing account and once you start buying stocks and see your money work for you, you will be hooked! =)
@@Jlindss ^ this AC still has liquidity to hold the company a-float for a few more years to come There's no sense in taking a huge loss like that. Air Canada is still a very established airline and I think personally that it will rise again.
Hey guys! The Air Canada question always comes up, I personally don't invest in Air Canada.... I just think there are better investing opportunities to take advantage of and with less risk during this crash. Even though I'm not a fan of Air Canada, I would agree with everyone above... until you sell, that $2K "loss" isn't real. This is the most difficult part of investing: being able to maintain your discipline and not give into fear or panic. That being said, if you are overwhelmed with stress and worry and you can't bear the thought of losing your entire 10K investment, that doesn't mean you have to cash out the entire thing! You can always take little steps: maybe sell $1000 worth of stock to give you peace of mind. Sure, you're locking in a $200 loss but at least you have that $1000 cash to count on. Again, I'm not saying you should do this, but a lot of beginners worry themselves sick and they only see two options: ride it our or sell it all! But those are not the only options... I talk about dollar cost averaging in my videos, where you buy stocks over the course of weeks or months rather than all at once and the SAME method can be applied to selling stocks. I hope that helps and thanks everyone for joining in the discussion! It can be incredibly helpful and reassuring to hear other people's points of view =)

@@CanadianTShirt Definitely watched all of the vids in the series. Do you have anything on VGRO in any of your vids - curious on your thoughts about it.
Thanks Suneil, I might make a video about options in the future but I personally don't invest in options and I don't recommend it for beginners. It is far more complicated and risky than buying and holding stocks and ETFs. If you don't know what you are doing, it is MUCH easier to lose money so don't blindly jump into it. Maybe in the future, I might play around with options but for now, I only want to make videos on things which I have extensive, personal experience with. I hope that helps! =)

Question: can you make a video on how to transfer your USD from your bank to Questrade and go through what they meant all, yield, 52 weeks, PE and so on and how we can use them better.. Thanks bro greatly appreciated your work
Hello Adrian, Thank you very much for inspiring me to start trading securities. I tried to open my account at Questrade, but after over a week of back and forth with employees there, with issues they had with my name, I gave me the impression that they had too many loops i needed to jump before opening my RSP. The good news is I have an account in WealthSimple Trade, Which by the way it only took about 1/2 hour from beginning to end, and already transfered money from my bank. I will watch your videos and learn more about investing.Keep up the good work.
Hmmm that is very unusual.... like I showed you in this video, I was able to open my Questrade account very easily. Is there anything particularly unusual with your situation? Did you provide them with your SIN?
And WealthSimple Trade is a GREAT platform but I would only recommend them for CANADIAN stocks and ETFs! Do NOT use them for US investments, the currency conversion fees are very expensive, even if you decide to pay $10 per month for their premium "Plus" version. I'll cover this in an upcoming video =)
@@CanadianTShirt Yes, I provided all required docs -I am Canadian Citizen- I have had sometime to explore WealthSimple and I think it will meet my needs as a less sophisticated investor. Thanks for your reply!
@@CanadianTShirt Just need a piece of advise from you quickly. Do you still recommend Questrade for US stocks after this offer i found out recently which is valid until tomorrow, 29th November, 2020. It offers free trades as compared to Questrade which offers $5commission/trade and the conversion fee of 2%. nbdb.ca/invest/free-transactions.html
Hi Adrian, 3 questions... 1) what the advantage of buying/owning share over buying ETFs, why buy into 1 when you can buy into a 'pool of many'? 2) if your investment value goes below $1000, do you get penalised for that in QT 3) I've never used the bill payment (add payee) option with my bank, what I do is fund my account/make a payment from the app (investment app or credit card app). Am I missing out by not using the bill payment option?
Great questions! 1. Buying ETFs is generally a safer, more conservative approach than individual stocks because you are diversifying, but I like to do both! ETFs give you great exposure and diversification but remember they still charge a small management fee usually around 0.05% to 0.8%. This is much smaller than Mutual funds which usually charge between 1.5% and 3% but owning individual stocks has no management fee at all! The way I see it, invest in ETFs to get exposure to the whole market but on top of that, you can double down on specific companies that you really believe in by owning stocks to get even more of a reward.
For the other questions: 2. If the total value of your investments across all Questrade accounts falls under $1000, they will charge you a $25 inactivity fee at the end of the quarter (3 month period) If you have more than $1000, you never have to worry about this fee! But if you drop below $1000 you can still waive this fee if you are under the age of 25 or if you deposit at least $150 during this quarter or if you make AT LEAST ONE trade during this quarter. If you meet any of those 3 conditions, you will NOT be charged this inactivity fee!
For question #3: I have never used that approach through the app.... how long does it take for the money to arrive in Questrade? For me using the bill payment method, it arrives the next business day so that's super quick and good enough for me so I never experimented with the other approaches. I know that the interac method is instant but it doesn't work with Visa Debit cards so I never got to try that one either.... I hope that helps! =)
Hey there. You have taken a ton of the mystery out buying stocks/etfs for me. At around 3:50 you talk about maintaining a minimum balance of $1000.00, but in another video you stress the importance of not leaving money as just cash in the account. My question is, do the stocks I purchase count toward that $1000.00? I am thinking they do, but wanted to be sure. I am enjoying your series and chomping at the bit to start trading! Thanks very much!
Thanks buddy! I'm happy to hear that my video is helpful! Yes you are absolutely correct! You do NOT need to hold $1000 cash, you just need to have $1000 inside your Questrade account, so the total amount of cash + stocks must be $1000 to waive the maintenance fee. In fact, due to Covid they relaxed this condition and took away the maintenance fee even if you have less than $1000 now =)
Absolutely! That video is definitely coming. I'll be talking about how investment profit is taxed in a non-registered account. The good news is that if you invest in a tax-sheltered account like a TFSA or RRSP, you don't pay taxes on this income! Make sure you check out my tax videos to learn how that works =)
Make sure you check out my TFSA Explained video to learn how it works! =) ua-cam.com/video/i_bWf1NyUbE/v-deo.html Generally for most people, you should start with the TFSA first, if you have the contribution room available! Why pay taxes on investments when you have tax-sheltered room waiting for you! =)
It depends on the type of ETF! I recommend Canadian dividend and REIT ETFs in your TFSA, US dividend ETFs in your RRSP to avoid the 15% withholding tax and growth ETFs (very small dividends) in your non-registered accounts or TFSA or RRSP if you have room. A tip I learned opening a Questrade TFSA: *you don't need to deposit the initial $1000 all at once* . you can deposit a minimum of $1 into the account at anytime, the account just won't be officially activated (you won't be able to trade) until you have the $1000 min balance in it.
Good tip, thanks for sharing! It's definitely easier if you make an initial deposit of $1000 but you're correct, it doesn't have to be all at once =)

Remember do not invest in the short term.... if you need money for a down payment in the next year or two, I wouldn't recommend investing in the stock market since there's a decent chance you can lose money. In the long term, 5 years or more the stock market is basically guaranteed to be profitable but the short term is far riskier....

If I sell stocks for capital gains, will this free up space for my contribution room? 👀
Amazing videos! 🙂
Check out my TFSA video to learn all the rules regarding contribution room!
ua-cam.com/video/i_bWf1NyUbE/v-deo.html
If you sell stocks inside your TFSA and make a profit (capital gains) this does not affect your contribution room directly unless you decide to withdraw that money out of your TFSA and then on January 1 of next year, you will regain that withdrawal amount.

(it's how they make money lol)

Congratulations on graduating soon!
If i have money in a TFSA with a bank, how do i transfer that money to my questrade? Thanks!

Hey bought about 10K worth of air canada at $20 a share I already lost 2K should I take the loss or ride it out ? :/
ride it out
@@Jlindss ^ this
AC still has liquidity to hold the company a-float for a few more years to come
There's no sense in taking a huge loss like that. Air Canada is still a very established airline and I think personally that it will rise again.
Hold it man. You didn’t really lose anything unless you sell ! So focus on the long run
Thanks so much I’m just going to ride it out and see what happens thank you :)

Thanks Suneil, I might make a video about options in the future but I personally don't invest in options and I don't recommend it for beginners.
Hi Adrian,
3 questions...
1) what the advantage of buying/owning share over buying ETFs, why buy into 1 when you can buy into a 'pool of many'?
2) if your investment value goes below $1000, do you get penalised for that in QT
3) I've never used the bill payment (add payee) option with my bank, what I do is fund my account/make a payment from the app (investment app or credit card app).
For the other questions:
2. If the total value of your investments across all Questrade accounts falls under $1000, they will charge you a $25 inactivity fee at the end of the quarter (3 month period)
If you have more than $1000, you never have to worry about this fee!
But if you drop below $1000 you can still waive this fee if you are under the age of 25 or if you deposit at least $150 during this quarter or if you make AT LEAST ONE trade during this quarter. If you meet any of those 3 conditions, you will NOT be charged this inactivity fee!
For question #3:
I have never used that approach through the app.... how long does it take for the money to arrive in Questrade?
For me using the bill payment method, it arrives the next business day so that's super quick and good enough for me so I never experimented with the other approaches. I know that the interac method is instant but it doesn't work with Visa Debit cards so I never got to try that one either.... I hope that helps! =)
@@CanadianTShirt thanks Adrian. Really appreciate the response...
In fact, due to Covid they relaxed this condition and took away the maintenance fee even if you have less than $1000 now =)
Thank You so much amigo, your video was very helpful 💰💰💰😁
I'm so happy to hear that! Happy investing! 😁
insane vid, only vid that helped me understand the tfsa
Thanks man! I'm happy to hear that my videos are helpful! =)
Hey man, you're doing an awesome job with this channel, keep the quality content coming - way to go!
Thank you Shai! I really appreciate that and you bet! 🙏
So thankful for your videos and explaining. Could you make a video on selling and profiting on the stock or shares you have bought?
Absolutely! That video is definitely coming. I'll be talking about how investment profit is taxed in a non-registered account. The good news is that if you invest in a tax-sheltered account like a TFSA or RRSP, you don't pay taxes on this income! Make sure you check out my tax videos to learn how that works =)
Great video! I am from Vancouver loved it! Should i use my tfsa account or checking to start? which one do i pay less fees/trading taxes on?
Make sure you check out my TFSA Explained video to learn how it works! =)

Generally for most people, you should start with the TFSA first, if you have the contribution room available! Why pay taxes on investments when you have tax-sheltered room waiting for you! =)
@@CanadianTShirt thank you boss!
Really helpful. Thank you so much

Thanks buddy! Great to see you in the comments as always! Have an awesome long weekend! =)
We all appreciate your passion and kindness! 👍🏻 Have a great weekend.
Thanks for this informative video!
Thanks Chris! I'm glad it was helpful! =)
Great video. What account type for ETFs ?
It depends on the type of ETF! I recommend Canadian dividend and REIT ETFs in your TFSA, US dividend ETFs in your RRSP to avoid the 15% withholding tax and growth ETFs (very small dividends) in your non-registered accounts or TFSA or RRSP if you have room. Check out my Canadian Tax Guide videos where I explain this tax efficiency strategy in greater detail =)

Cool video, thanks! I'm a US person but my mom is Canadian and couldn't get her started using my brokerage Schwab. I'll definitely sign her up and use your referral link.
