This is so fascinating! I'm quite struck by how close we came to not having any Austen novels with how tricky it was for her to get published! From our hindsight view, it seems unbelievable but I love how you point out that publishing novels back then was so much less "normal" than it is today. I also think your point about the Victorians is fascinating. I love Victorian novels, but boy are they different from Jane's!
Thanks for putting this together--so interesting! I've read about her books individually, but it's eye-opening to see their publishing history as a whole during her life.
Ditto. This was a real contribution to general knowledge about the intersection of JA's writing efforts and her struggle to see them into print. Happy Austen month. Ironic Bloody Hell, too. Nine P for a couple of ice creams, and Jane made 30 pounds (total) for her Mansfield Park work?! Crikee!
I'd forgotten that part about her signing it M.A.D. So fun! Great points about how the Victorians shaped perspectives about Jane Austen. Very thoughtful video and great synopsis -- thanks for sharing! New subscriber!

She was a trailblazer and it’s sad that she didn’t even have a glimmer of what her impact would be on the world.
