Of the dozens and dozens of music “stars” I’ve had the pleasure to talk to, over the last 45 years, in the Canadian music biz, Mary Gauthier and Gurf Morlix are among the very most intelligent. I spent a weekend with Mary in the late 2000’s at a festival I co- produced. Her words are with me to this day. And I’m a straight, white, Canadian male. God bless her. It’s the day after Gordon Lightfoot died. I’m going thru all my super emotional music. Peace
This is as soulful as country music gets! Her voice cuts to the bone. And it opens up that aching part hidden inside. Let it bleed🩸...let it breathe🌬. Leave me be.😔 "I drink"🍺
Thanks for the suggestions; from a lost dutchman 🤗. I l o v e marie gauthier, lucky stars, i drink, mercy now; all hit home hard she got a golden throat!
When Mary Gauthier cooked at and ran her Cajun restaurant Dixie Kitchen in Boston way back when, I used to eat there. Being that she was born in N'Awlens, she brought the authenticity of real Cajun food to the table. I enjoyed eating there on many an occasion. One evening, while dining, I reached for the hot sauce - it was right there on the table - and Mary walked past and commented, "There's somebody with no taste buds left." I guess a cook feels that the food should taste just right the way it comes out of the kitchen. I respected her candor, but I always ask myself "Why is the hot sauce on the table to begin with then?" Well, she sold the restaurant to her cook, who apparently didn't have the business savvy to keep it going. Great food, never to be replicated with that authenticity way up north. Mary, if you're reading this, thank you for your great restaurant. I still shake a few drops of hot sauce on my food. Need Tums afterward though...
Qhen I went to Louisiana and asked that same thing they said that they leave the hot sauce on the table so folks can add as much or as little as they like.
I drink is the 1st Mary record I heard , I met Mary briefly at the Maverick festival in Eastern England, I told her that every time I put the micrwave on I thought of this song, she poility laughed . Funny thing is I dont own a micro wave and dont drink booze like I used to. Love to you all
I never really got into drinking but i did have an alcoholic abusive father that fisrst verse hits me hard especially the i got my daddys blood inside my veins and the chorus
Hey, as an Aussie I have always known this as a Bill Chambers song, and always assumed he had written it. I mean, I've seen the guy perform live many times in beer gardens, and this song seems to be his anthem. ua-cam.com/video/fI3XTigtMG0/v-deo.html So I listened to Bill singing his song tonight, then just out of curiosity clicked on the link to some chick called Mary Gauthier doing a cover of it (or so I assumed). I was astounded to learn that it's actually her song, she wrote it. All these years I've been mistaken. And what a great job she does of it. Her delivery has a rawness and honesty that only a singer/songwriter can achieve. But Bill Chambers' version ranks a close second.
I cried the first time I heard this. Eight years sober now

Bob Dylan's themed radio hour brought me here, the best track of the Drinking episode.
There' s a lot of wisdom behind those eyes and a lot of soul in this music.

Right up there with John Prine, the late Guy Clark and the died-too-soon Townes Van Zandt, one of the best American songwriters out there.
I fully concur. It was an absolute pleasure to drum on this. She was a sweetheart to work with.

Aint that the truth, and John Prine 1st in that list, love Mary she's 100% original.

Einfach nur phatastisch! Es tut weh und gut zugleich, dieses Lied.
She gets real deep in the soul and drags it up through you uncomfortably

"Old Men Sit and Think" "I Drink"
I can't think of another song anywhere that "gets" addiction like this one. K.D. Lang's "My Addiction" is a close 2nd - any other suggestions?
Maybe "not an addict " by k's choice.
They're both wonderful. Cigarette Machine gets there too I think.
We're is Mary know I would love too meet a person like this before I die
