"Won't resent, won't despair, old and bent, I won't care" I always shed tears at this part. The humility and optimistic desperation of Quasimodo, in this part, are unbearable for me. He ask for so little, yet It sounds like he thinks of It as an impossible wish. It hurts my heart seeing how much Frollo damaged his confidence and made him feel like a prisoner.
@@NelsonARuehl That's what makes the best Disney villain songs IMO, they manipulate the heroes through weaponizing truths for their own wicked means. Ursula is right that human society's expectations of women is stifling and obsessed with the performance of femininity, but she twists it from a warning into advice, promising Ariel her every desire if she abandons who she is and embraces the persona of a stranger. Scar is right that the hyenas are struggling to survive in the Elephant Graveyard following their exile from the rest of the Pride Lands, but instead of offering a more equal hierarchy he promises revenge, a hierarchy that puts himself and the hyenas alone atop the Circle of Life and relegates the rest into the same destitution the hyenas endured. @@1sdani I agree, too many people were agreeing with Frollo warning Quasimodo about the cruel outside world as if what he did was morally good, but failed to mention that he was manipulating and controlling him only for his selfish benefit.
And then the sequel RUINS it, which I don't mind spoiling because no one should see that. It literally takes EVERYTHING likable about this movie, this SONG in particular, and discards it. Don't watch it. It's bad.
I think it is less about not taking life for granted but instead not taking the circumstances with which they get to live for granted. Quasimodo was alive, but he suffered far more than many of those people. All he wanted was to be normal.
I can't believe that Tom Hulce ever thought his voice wasn't good. Like... damn, he's amazing as hell. Watched him in Amadeus and then this. I'm saddened that he stopped acting, but I can always reflect back on this soundtrack. He's been so huge in my childhood that I'm always going to love each film of the Disney Renaissance.
Really he thought his voice was terrible? That is so wrong he has one of the most beautiful singing voices I have ever heard it's so beautiful and soulful.
When I was a kid, I was banned from watching the movie at home. I didn't see this film until I was in 4th grade (it was in class), and I enjoyed it. As an adult, I find Quasimodo to be a relatable character, being as I was ostracised from society for having Asperger's as a kid; instead of learning to embrace this part of me, I was always told that I had to hide it, in order to fit in. (The results were disastrous.) But Quasimodo eventually learns to love himself, embrace his differences, and stand up to his tormentors, which is what I love about his character development. (The most 3-dimensional development I've seen in an animated movie.) Because of animated movies like these, I hope to make my own animated films about characters rising above adversities, using traditional animation and "deep canvas", which was used in about 90% of the movie.
I saw it in movie theaters when I was 4 and a half. I friggin loved it then and still do. I really related to the story and empathized with the characters far more than the characters from Little Mermaid and similar.
I used to watch this movie 3 times a day when I was 7, I was diagnosed with adhd but my parents didn't tell me at that time, so I was homeschooled and isolated from society so I could relate to that, my mom tells me she hates this movie, I wonder why👀
Most people dismiss this movie, but it has one of the best musical scores that Disney or Alan Menken can compose. It also carries an unforgettable message. Good job Disney.
Quick fact! In the novel, Frollo was the archdeacon, but the filmmakers decided to make him a judge to make it flow a little better. Being a judge, Frollo could hunt down the Gypsies without being questioned. (kudos to the filmmakers for doing their homework!)
I imagine that Quasimodo and Rapunzel could sing a duet of this song, since they both share this same type of desire of wanting to be out in the world.
This song evokes a tragic dynamic between a possessive, manipulative, and overprotective parental figure and their obedient and sheltered child that just wants to be loved truly and make genuine connections
This makes me think of "Mother Knows Best." There are several parallels between this movie and "Tangled," but without wishing to offend fans, I like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" better.
This song is so beautiful. I listen to it so many times. Tom Hulce's voice and the swells and falls of the music are just lovely. For me its an alliteration for depression, Frollo being the depression, and Quasimodo wanting to just live one day free without it
The world is cruel The world is wicked It's I alone whom you can trust in this whole city I am your only friend I who keep you, teach you, feed you, dress you I who look upon you without fear How can I protect you, boy, unless you Always stay in here Away in here You are deformed (I am deformed) And you are ugly (And I am ugly) And these are crimes For which the world Shows little pity You do not comprehend (You are my one defender) Out there they'll revile you As a monster (I am a monster) Out there they will hate And scorn and jeer (Only a monster) Why invite their calumny And consternation Stay in here Be faithful to me (I'm faithful) Grateful to me (I'm grateful) Do as I say Obey And stay In here Safe behind these windows and these parapets of stone Gazing at the people down below me All my life I watch them as I hide up here alone Hungry for the histories they show me All my life I memorize their faces Knowing them as they will never know me All my life I wonder how it feels to pass a day Not above them But part of them And out there Living in the sun Give me one day out there All I ask is one To hold forever Out there Where they all live unaware What I'd give What I'd dare Just to live one day out there Out there among the millers and the weavers and their wives Through the roofs and gables I can see them Ev'ry day they shout and scold and go about their lives Heedless of the gift it is to be them If I was in their skin I'd treasure ev'ry instant Out there Strolling by the Seine Taste a morning out there Like ordinary men Who freely walk about there Just one day and then I swear I'll be content With my share Won't resent Won't despair Old and bent I won't care I'll have spent One day Out there
I remember watching this movie again sometime around 2014 or 2015, and I'd forgotten how amazing the visuals and the soundtrack to this movie really was. It's like the memories were buried deep in my consciousness and suddenly brought to light as I was watching the story unfold. It was super nostalgic.
My goodness... For the first time in my life, I actually relate to Frollo here... in the sense that the "world is cruel and wicked". I've never felt that before. Anyone who is different whether that be by their appearance or mental health, is alienated and frowned upon. It's a horrible world for those who don't fit in with the majority. Our world is so wrong :(. Quazi, is not ugly at all, the film proves his wonders. No one deserves to live in isolation because they're different. Good on you Quazi, escape and go to the Feast of Fools
Yes, but unfortunately, he is ugly on the outside, which is enough for Frollo to hold against him. He uses it as, a sort of, weapon against Quasimodo. No matter what Quasimodo asked for, whether it was to go outside, or to harbour a fugitive, Frollo would make him feel guilty by reminding him that because of his ugliness, he would've been killed by his mother. This was a terrible lie, manufactured by the wickedness of Frollo's twisted mind. He only told Quasimodo the truth immediately before his death. Quasimodo seems to forgive him, though, as he doesn't let go of the robe that holds Frollo up. More to the point, Frollo was wrong about the fact that Quasimodo would be ridiculed, as he wasn't. He was praised for his ugliness. Except until the soldier started the humilation, then it kinda went downhill... Only Esmeralda and Phoebus saw past his ugliness and did (or, in Phoebus' case, tried to do what was right) and tried to stop the hideous cruelty. Frollo forbade both of them, but Esmeralda, who, seemingly, had nothing to lose, disobeyed and cut Quasimodo loose. She was applauded. Not for saving Quasimodo, but for standing up to Frollo, who was feared by all of Paris, especially gypsies.
I never got why this movie got so overlooked. It has the same elements that made "Beauty and the Beast" and "The Little Mermaid" so sucessful. Those elements being a great story, an AMAZING soundtrack, and dynamic charactars. I think the reason being is because this movie has many grown up themes, like percecuting minorities and lust, with little kids not understanding those kinds of things quite yet. I remember watching this as a six-year old kid and not understanding one thing. I recently rewatched it, and it is one of my favorite Disney movies. Judge Frollo is BY FAR one of my favorite Disney villians. But, he's topped by Gaston. (I can't help it. I like those douchbags in movies. They make me laugh everytime.) I loved Frozen as well, because the soundtrack was good, and the charactars were dynamic. But I think Hunchback is just as good, and didn't get NEARLY as much respect as Frozen did,
I agree. Frozen's soundtrack was honestly "meh" to me. I loved "Vuelie" which was the opening number, but to be honest, that was the one song that stood out to me.
The marketing was also not great. By the commercials you would've guessed it was a lighthearted and fun movie, so people were disappointed when they didn't get that.
I think that the problem is the people who think that an animated movie is for kids, and that's wrong this movie is clearly an adult film but Disney classified it like a kids movie bc is animated
We may not be good enough for them, but we’re good enough for some people. It can be hard to find them, and many times you will feel very lonely, thinking that it will always be like this. I promise, it won’t. Someone is out there, waiting to meet you and love you as much as you’ve always deserved.
The saddest thing is that thousands upon thousands of children and adults in the United States - and beyond, in larger numbers - experience this same serious sadness and restraint due to disability. They are told that they are undeserving of freedom and participation in larger society. And they are kept from enjoying freedom and participation in larger society. It's sick. But good on Disney for showing this. It is uplifting to those of us who have been there.
I know right and thanks to Disney for show casing this message to the Special Ed people who are disabled I love this song because it really showcase the pain that Quasi went through as a kid when he stayed in The bell Tower because Frollo was scared that people would make fun of him just because he is Disabled on his back
Your comment on disability, Ella Croft, is precisely why watching The Hunchback of Notre Dame during the movie's premier was the emotionally hardest Disney movie I had ever seen. I had to leave the screen room for a few moments to calm my emotions, as I related to Quasimodo's situation, not for having a facial deformity, locked in a cathedral and getting called an ugly monster because of it but for being born premature, which caused me to get a non apparent physical disability as well as more likely to get rejected and left out for my lack of carefree spontaneity, as well as having a learning disability and called such derogatory names that no child should hear directed toward them from a trusted adult.
the disabled are told they don't deserve freedom? Where the hell did you hear that? I think society coddles them to much and the disabled think they can do anything a normal person can do. And both are wrong.
I know this is an old comment but I think it depends on the person speaking on the matter. Some people coddle them and think by saying "you can do anything an able bodied person can!" they're being helpful, which we all know isn't true, but there's also the small group of people who think the disabled ( mostly mental ) are nothing short of useless and should be locked away. They do exist.
This movie was pretty intense for my young mind to take and yet, even though I remember being somewhat nervous watching this, I still watched it plenty times on VHS. And whenever I hear Quasi sing this song and Heaven's light, I found some sort of comfort in his voice. Idk It just gives off a warm feeling whenever I listen to him
This is my favorite song from the movie. It's heart-breaking, tragic, dramatic, hopeful and innocent. From the gorgeous instrumentation to the expressive voices-everything about it is just beautiful.
Not only does this give a message of "don't judge by sight, but by soul" and "don't take life for granted" but it could also give a message about social anxiety and insecurity, if you want to interpret it that way. In this song, you could think of Quasimodo as any person with anxiety, and Frollo is the voice of said anxiety. Interpret this however you want, I'm just giving what I think.
Hannah Masters Oh, yeah, he's great. He's in my book club. I mean, he's a little obsessive, but he makes great scones and he really enjoy's Little Women!
What's striking to me is the joy Quasimodo feels in just the _hope_ of having a single day to experience the world. He is guaranteed nothing, yet he's thankful for the hope itself. Having a semi-debilitating chronic illness, it's easy to similarly feel trapped in my home, and that I have nothing of value to offer the world. But man, the hope that things will get better someday is a God-given _gift._ It's what keeps me going. :)
Just like heaven's light and hellfire, the contrast between Frollo and Quasimodo and their two parts to this song is incredible…and yes i love the darkness and coldness of Frollo's part here!
Found myself on the edge of crying listening to this. I love revisiting old Disney movies I used to watch all the time. Now as an adult, I can fully understand Quasimodo's yearning and struggle. It's a sad world we live in where people, as soon as they're judged as different, are cast out and ostracized.
Such clever and poignant lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Pippin), and such thrilling, majestic, lung-filling orchestrations of Menken's score! The most adult animated Disney movie, EVER, with some serious themes on human nature.
The Black Cauldron is a bit more adult than this, but in a different sense. The Black Cauldron is light years more violent, it has some pretty dark and extreme imagery, and some pretty intense themes such as death, murder, raising the dead, and it even was going to have child nudity. Princess Eilonwy is 12, and in a fully animated but forgotten deleted scene, she had half her dress ripped apart to the point of exposing both of her breasts
+dominic garcia and there's more. such as cauldron born slashing one to death, and another who is melted by a mist. there are pictures shown. but I must warn you... it's creepy
I think Hunchback has the most intense/dramatic moments of any Disney animated film, but the most "adult" in terms of seriousness is Fantasia. Outside of the Sorcerer's Apprentice, there's not really a ton for kids specifically - its more of an art museum than a traditional narrative.
Clyde Miles the gargoyles are great side characters and bring fun in it Without them the movie would be too dark and quasi would never come out of the bell tower i dont understand why som many find them annoying they are great sympathtetic characters in my opinion
3:18 makes me feeling goosebumps. one of the best music background, and Quasimodo voice fits perfectly well... I have no doubt to say this: BEST SONG EVER IN DISNEY HISTORY
This will always be my favourite Disney film, I grew up watching it constantly. When we when to Paris I brought along a Quasimodo doll. When we went to Notre Dame I brought him along so he could go back home for a bit. I will never not be in the verge of tears hearing this song, so many memories, but also the meaning behind it is just so precious
"Everyday they shout and scold and go about their lives, heedless of the gift it is to be them." every time I hear this part I cant help but cry. This is how you uplift and send out a message without making it sound passionless and pushy.
BjornvirEldrusson All that were reused were the character models of Rapunzel and Flynn. As well as Flynn being a design inspiration for Kristoph. Sven was based off Bambi (for the design).
I know how quasi feels, when he sings his lyrics describe my high functioning autism perfectly. Trapped in my house, wanting to live a life but knowing i could never be like any normal person. I would do anything to not feel guilty nor ashamed to be myself for who i am. To not feel anxious in a crowd, to enjoy time with my family, and not be so weird when talking to people.
Dude, you ARE a normal person, because the only normal thing about people, is that we are different. PD: yes, i know how cliche it sounds, but its truem
This is easily on my top five list of underappreciated Disney songs, right underneath Brazzle Dazzle Day from Pete's Dragon. Major props to Tom Hulce for belting this out with such enthusiasm, and especially for holding that last note.
For anyone who says Beauty and the Beast was all about Stockholm Syndrome, please show them this movie. This movie is the perfect definition of that. Frollo had been manipulating Quasimodo for his whole life and says his mother was a horrible person and he had forced him to stay inside forever.
While I won't say beauty and the beast is Stockholm syndrome, I do think the plot needed more work than what Disney gave it to remove the worst of the unfortunate subtext. The original beauty and the beast (and also similar stories) were often about offering young woman trapped in unhappy marriages a fantasy escape: "I know you're new husband seems like a terrifying monster. But get to know him, and be good and virtuous no matter his bad temper and maybe he'll turn out alright!" Too tired to brainstorm an example plot right now, but I'd start by finding a way to have Beauty live with/become involved with/get intermingled Beast without any sort of threats or coercion from him to her. You'd probably also want to remove anything that carries parallel to real life domestic abuse (like breaking shit when he's angry). Probably also, the catalyst for Beasts change shouldn't directly be Beauty. You want to absolutely get rid of any implications like "You can fix him." To Disney's credit, I think they smoothed over a lot (and Gaston's devolution helps cover the remaining cracks.)
@@Estarile Just have Belle get her father back the first visit, in exchange for nothing, and have her come back out of her volition, curious and feeling sorry for the Beast. She chooses to return because she can see the yawning loneliness inside him, and it reminds her of her own feeling of being out of place in the town. The Beast learns to reject what he's been told by everyone around him through her unconditional acceptance of him as he is, not because she expects him to turn into a human prince or she just wants him to be nicer to her. The last scene where he fights Gaston, Gaston could say something like "You're just a big, dumb beast," only to have the Beast retort with a rejection of that false premise. Something like "No, I'm not. Not anymore."
It's scary how many similarities/parallels there between the beginning of 'Out There' and Mother Knows Best' from Tangled. Makes me wanna see Rapunzel and Quasimodo meet. Quasi would carve wooden figures of the people of Corona and Punzie would paint them from memory and it would be so sweet and wholesome.
Quasimodo's angelic voice is just everything whenever this plays in my head at school. 💫 Before I even knew this was a Disney song, or that this movie even existed at all, it was played in my class for a lesson.
I don't know why, but I always cry at the beginning of this song. Frollo, telling Quasimoto that he is the only one who will ever be his friend, the only one who will protect him, and making Quasimoto repeat all of the things he says, it just makes me SO sad. The abusiveness of this relationship is finally hitting me now that I'm older, and I can't help but wish that there weren't people like that out in the world. It breaks my heart to listen to this soundtrack...
Damn it. This amazing song gave me goosebumps all over my body, made me tear up a bit, and smile the whole time Quasimoto sang. That's it, I'm downloading 👌
Tom Hulce does have a beautiful angelic voice. I fell in love with his singing when I was a kid. Am I the only one who was serenaded by it? 😍😍😍😍😍 What a voice! What a voice!
No you are definitely not alone! I was 11 when I first watched this and I never knew a man could have such a singing voice. I fell in love with Quasimodo, his kindness and courage, and such a beautiful emotional voice. Tom Hulce's voice is epic. He is my one and only true Disney Prince
This is the most underrated Disney movie ever made. It has BEAUTIFUL music, and AMAZING vocal cast, and a beautiful storyline and characters. It bombed in theatres and is, for most people I know, the least memorable Disney movie of their childhood. I will never understand why this beautiful cinematic masterpiece is deemed as being mediocre at best. It is, in my opinion, one of the BEST.
This song always makes me cry, there is something so hopeful about quasi's dream but also truth in frollo statement's unfortunately. The question is what do we focus on the hope or the negative aspects. Light or darkness? Love this film!
I saw this movie for the first time a year ago, and instantly loved it. It speaks volumes to anyone who feels like they don't belong in this world just because they are different
Growing up, the portion that Quasimodo sang about wanting to spend a day where he could be among people normally really resonated with me. Nobody knew at the time but I have autism and I always felt separated from people somehow, but didn't know why. Even approaching my 30s, now at peace with my diagnosis and quite content with my current situation, I still feel this song and that heartache from years ago.
You can tell Tom Hulce was nervous when he sang this, but it actually fits Quasimodo’s personality perfectly. It’s a little hesitant and unsure, but so sweet and pure and earnest.
There is absolutely nothing nervous about Hulce’s performance here, that’s an amazing vibrato that you’re hearing. It takes a lot of control to sing like this and to hold the longer notes he achieved in this song.
i know you all must be disappointed how little credit this movies gets, but let us all remember that the most underrated, unknown, and unappreciated things are indeed the love and pleasing things this earth will ever experienced. wow don't i sound like a philosopher XD
One of my favorite Disney cartoons growing up in the 90s, and criminally underrated. The songs and their lyrical content in this movie are on a different level.
this AMAZING song in hunchback of notre dame BURIES frozen in a second. also tom hulce's singing voice is SO powerful and gripping. this song is the reason i LOVE HunchBack of Notre Dame
As a 20 year old man who was homeschooled most their life and has no siblings and who has religious parents who work a lot, I can relate A LOT to Quasimodo. Being alone isn’t fun. Everyone who survived 2020 can understand that, but imagine that being your whole life. Never take your friends or family for granted because even when they get on your nerves you realize they’re the best gift you could ever receive.
I totally get it. I was an only child with no cousins my age or other kids in my area. I kept to myself in school until I switched to cyber. Over the years my loneliness has become aloneness, but sometimes it makes me a little sad
This is one of Disney's most underrated movies. It is a masterpiece of animation, music and storytelling. While it does stray from the original story line of Hugo's novel, it doesn't diminish the impact of the moral at all, but makes a complex topic more understandable for younger viewers, while not patronising the more mature audience.
The Hunchback of Notre Dame is so underrated ughhhhhhhh I love it so much but not enough people have watched it and those who have only saw it when it first came out or it was just pushed to the back of their minds which is so sad because everything about it is so amazing and deserves to be more known and beloved.
I really appreciate how Quasimodo and Frollo have songs when one of them ends their song the other starts theirs. I also appreciate how Quasimodos songs are happy and positive but Frollos are sinister and negative they are definitely one of the best hero/bad guy Bundles I've ever seen.
This is one of the greatest Disney movies of all time if not the greatest. There is no other Disney movie that has this much nuance and relevance to the real world. I didn’t truly appreciate this masterpiece till I was an adult. I think this is one Disney movie that is not particularly for kids. A kid can watch it but it truly take adulthood for you to understand the beauty.
Tom Hulce is one of my favorite male actors. He was and probably still a good example of a sentimental guy. When I was little I didn't care Quasimodo until I got older. I love his singing and he's one of my favorite Disney male heros.
Besides the score and singing being immaculate, the song fits perfectly into the movie, it's fits into the plot seamlessly and important for character development. 10/10
everytime i listen to any of this movie's songs I start to tear up. The orchestra and the lyrics are so beautiful. old Disney really knew how to make me cry.
I still remember the feeling when watching this part in the theatre for the first time. The animation, the scenes, the music are so beautiful. It's magic indeed
One of the most underrated and underplayed Disney hero ballads! I feel like not a lot of Disney songs end on a crescendo. They will often quiet at the end. Beautiful song and movie.
The outside world can be dark and cruel, but there’s also care and compassion for anyone who’s different like Quasimodo. At first Esmeralda was frightened by Quasimodo’s deformed appearance but then she learned that Quasimodo is beautiful from the inside. You can’t judge a book by its cover.
I love the transition from pessimism to optimism.
It sort of happens again in Heaven's Light/Hellfire :)
Chloe Easterling You're right! :D
Yes Alan Menken is a musical genius! It's a transition from a minor key (Dark sound) to a major key (Happy sound).
It’s similar to Heaven’s light/hellfire

Have you listened to the soundtrack from the stage musical, which is closer to the book and has songs that were cut from the movie?

Alan Menken's favorite score of all that he's done!

Star Stuff That’s exactly my experience, I’m still stuck at home and it’s awful. This song certainly resonates with me because of it.
I really like the color of his voice. A lot of vibrato. It's really good.
it's the voice of Tom Hulce
my personal favorite disney voice actor!
Whats really cool is that Tom Hulce sang/voiced Frollo too! Isn't that crazy!!
lol no. don't disrespect tony jay like that
Beautiful voice
Most people dismiss this movie, but it has one of the best musical scores that Disney or Alan Menken can compose. It also carries an unforgettable message. Good job Disney.
on
It's Alan Menken's personal favorite of all music he's orchestrated =)
I totally agree... I told my nephew it has one of the most beautiful scores and yet noone talks about it, no Oscar, unbelievable
right? somehow this soundtrack slips through the cracks
@@DanielSelk Michael Starobin orchestrated it for Alan, who just composed it. Orchestrators don't get as much recognition sadly.
Quick fact! In the novel, Frollo was the archdeacon, but the filmmakers decided to make him a judge to make it flow a little better. Being a judge, Frollo could hunt down the Gypsies without being questioned. (kudos to the filmmakers for doing their homework!)
Sophie Evans This is old but they actually changed it so they wouldn’t get Christians angry
Actually, that's a change that Victor Hugo made when he oversaw its adaptation as an opera (at the request of the Catholic Church).
I like frollo’s judge outfit
i mean he still being religious
@@vintage1520 yeah but as a judge he's just a zealot, not an overzealous archdeacon

along with Great MOuse Detective & Oliver & Company

Yep, it's right alongside The Road to El Dorado and Treasure Planet, etc... for me

I like this one Tangled Frozen Oliver and Company and Balto.
I imagine that Quasimodo and Rapunzel could sing a duet of this song, since they both share this same type of desire of wanting to be out in the world.
+99thJediWarrior Mind blown! Never thought about it since now!
wasn't that a fan fic?

Yea! It could probably on some animated Disney parody of an Awards Show.

theres a mash up on soundcloud of Ariel and Quasi's songs together
This song evokes a tragic dynamic between a possessive, manipulative, and overprotective parental figure and their obedient and sheltered child that just wants to be loved truly and make genuine connections
This makes me think of "Mother Knows Best." There are several parallels between this movie and "Tangled," but without wishing to offend fans, I like "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" better.
I think so too. Those movies do have quite a few similarities.
Luna Heartfilia Except the hero doesn't get the girl (For Rapunzel is the guy, but I think you get it) :x
Etoloser Ymle
True. Quasi does get a girl in the sequel though. :D But the sequel isn't very good quality.
Tangled is nothing compared to the Hunchback of Notre Dame..
Haha xD yeah :x
This song is so beautiful. I listen to it so many times. Tom Hulce's voice and the swells and falls of the music are just lovely. For me its an alliteration for depression, Frollo being the depression, and Quasimodo wanting to just live one day free without it
Interesting interpretation
Patricio Mejia ^ now that's an alliteration
3:03 is some of the happiest music I've ever heard.
Mswordx23 I know right, the background score almosts sounds a bit like John Williams territory.
Mswordx23 lmao perfect
Mswordx23 it’s that bell set because mallet percussion makes everything better😁😁
It's a work of art.
3:30 is too, its just a really positive tone throughout Quasi's half of the song
Tom Hulce's voice brings a tear to my eyes. It's just such a great contrast to Tony Jay's voice. Beautifully made.

I who keep you, teach you, feed you, dress you
I who look upon you without fear
How can I protect you, boy, unless you
Always stay in here
Away in here
You are deformed
(I am deformed)
And you are ugly
(And I am ugly)
And these are crimes
For which the world
Shows little pity
You do not comprehend
(You are my one defender)
Out there they'll revile you
As a monster
(I am a monster)
Out there they will hate
And scorn and jeer
(Only a monster)
Why invite their calumny
And consternation
Stay in here
Be faithful to me
(I'm faithful)
Grateful to me
(I'm grateful)
Do as I say
Obey
And stay
In here
Safe behind these windows and these parapets of stone
Gazing at the people down below me
All my life I watch them as I hide up here alone
Hungry for the histories they show me
All my life I memorize their faces
Knowing them as they will never know me
All my life I wonder how it feels to pass a day
Not above them
But part of them
And out there
Living in the sun
Give me one day out there
All I ask is one
To hold forever
Out there
Where they all live unaware
What I'd give
What I'd dare
Just to live one day out there
Out there among the millers and the weavers and their wives
Through the roofs and gables I can see them
Ev'ry day they shout and scold and go about their lives
Heedless of the gift it is to be them
If I was in their skin
I'd treasure ev'ry instant
Out there
Strolling by the Seine
Taste a morning out there
Like ordinary men
Who freely walk about there
Just one day and then
I swear I'll be content
With my share
Won't resent
Won't despair
Old and bent
I won't care
I'll have spent
One day
Out there
yeAhhh.
Who here read along the music?
Fantastic comment, not sure what else to say :).

@@R0DisG0D the trailers are to blame!! xD
I think that the problem is the people who think that an animated movie is for kids, and that's wrong this movie is clearly an adult film but Disney classified it like a kids movie bc is animated
This movie even had Belle in it. Hahaha
Living with autism and constantly thinking I'm not good enough, to take part in public socialisation...this song really hits me in the heart
Me too. I know how it feels like that when I tried to fit in most of the time.
I’m on the PDD side of autism, so yeah, I can relate.
I have Aspergers and I feel the same way.
Me too. I’ve always felt like I’m not good enough to be “one of them” and this song helped me. (I’m autistic too.)
We may not be good enough for them, but we’re good enough for some people. It can be hard to find them, and many times you will feel very lonely, thinking that it will always be like this. I promise, it won’t. Someone is out there, waiting to meet you and love you as much as you’ve always deserved.
This film is highly underrated… The music is definitely the best out of all the Disney films in my opinion.
What about Ed Edd n Eddy?
I agree. Beautiful score. The choirs are unmatched.
On this horrific day, this song seems to uplift and give in the smallest way hope that Notre Dame will again rise to spend more days out there.
Agreed
I saw what happened to Notre dame on the news
@@gracekiebzak9437 :'(
Maybe Quasi was freed and Frollo died that day.
@@Manas-co8wl frollo was killed by Quasimodo so
No he wasn't
The saddest thing is that thousands upon thousands of children and adults in the United States - and beyond, in larger numbers - experience this same serious sadness and restraint due to disability. They are told that they are undeserving of freedom and participation in larger society. And they are kept from enjoying freedom and participation in larger society. It's sick.
But good on Disney for showing this. It is uplifting to those of us who have been there.
I know right and thanks to Disney for show casing this message to the Special Ed people who are disabled I love this song because it really showcase the pain that Quasi went through as a kid when he stayed in The bell Tower because Frollo was scared that people would make fun of him just because he is Disabled on his back
No he was born deformed but he did become deaf from being bellringer
Quasimodo: (must remain hidden from the public eye)
Also Quasimodo: (runs to top of cathedral and belts a saucey note for all to hear and see)
i would be that one person that would listen, his voice is awesome
This movie was pretty intense for my young mind to take and yet, even though I remember being somewhat nervous watching this, I still watched it plenty times on VHS. And whenever I hear Quasi sing this song and Heaven's light, I found some sort of comfort in his voice. Idk It just gives off a warm feeling whenever I listen to him
CMW1995 i agree mate
He just puts so much feeling and passion in, you can't help but adore it.
I saw it at 9. Still my favorite movie to this day. Decades later.
Tom Hulce has such an amazing voice, he really needs more parts like this.
Tamayako He’s the one by giving him those anxieties. He’s an abuser who serially gaslights him
Frollo seems like a real great guy to be around.
Hannah Masters, if you've seen Frollo, then you've met my mother. I'll take a cartoon villain any day. :)
Hannah Masters In the real France of Middle Age what he say in the song is totally right
Yeah, we went to law school together
Frollo is my least favorite Disney villain. Ever since I was little I could never look at him in the eye.
Alan Menken’s best score. And Tom Hulce’s voice is so gorgeous.
Tom Hulce's voice was perfect for this. It's full of the right emotion and sincerity.
Even I (and many people, for that matter) catches themselves thinking like that.
GaMeEmpress89 its the same as me 22 i was born in 1996 and it came out in 1996
Such clever and poignant lyrics by Stephen Schwartz (Pippin), and such thrilling, majestic, lung-filling orchestrations of Menken's score!
And then there are the gargoyles
Clyde Miles the gargoyles are great side characters and bring fun in it
Without them the movie would be too dark and quasi would never come out of the bell tower
i dont understand why som many find them annoying they are great sympathtetic characters in my opinion
Holy MOLY. This movie seriously has some beautiful music.
I can't stop replaying this song. I love the intro and the voice for Quassimodo.
"Everyday they shout and scold and go about their lives, heedless of the gift it is to be them." every time I hear this part I cant help but cry.
This is how you uplift and send out a message without making it sound passionless and pushy.
One of my favorite Disney songs, period. The ending gives me goosebumps it's so great.
3:57 - When the bells come in, it makes my heart soar! 😁
Much better than Let It Go, and yet this never got that level of praise.
Sadly this never got the commercial endorsement :/
That might have something to do with the differences in the marketing budget.
MagicEve Hunchback had a total budget of $100 Million.
Frozen had $150 Million.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Baby Dogson And didn't they use a lot of the same stuff from Tangled in Frozen? They definitely didn't start from scratch.
BjornvirEldrusson All that were reused were the character models of Rapunzel and Flynn. As well as Flynn being a design inspiration for Kristoph. Sven was based off Bambi (for the design).
I was astounded to learn that Tom Hulce voiced Quasi including the singing. To have such an amazing voice and yet not generally be known for it? Wow!
I was 11 when this movie came out and it totally floored me. I still love it to this day, and can remember every word to the songs. Beautiful.
This is easily on my top five list of underappreciated Disney songs, right underneath Brazzle Dazzle Day from Pete's Dragon. Major props to Tom Hulce for belting this out with such enthusiasm, and especially for holding that last note.
yo this movie is criminally underrated
2020 be like
Everyone: I'm gonna go crazy staying in quarantine at home all day!
Quasimodo: Bitch please, I've been in quarantine for 20 years.
quarantine is. Really something baby !
But get to know him, and be good and virtuous no matter his bad temper and maybe he'll turn out alright!"
Too tired to brainstorm an example plot right now, but I'd start by finding a way to have Beauty live with/become involved with/get intermingled Beast without any sort of threats or coercion from him to her.
You'd probably also want to remove anything that carries parallel to real life domestic abuse (like breaking shit when he's angry).
Probably also, the catalyst for Beasts change shouldn't directly be Beauty. You want to absolutely get rid of any implications like "You can fix him."
To Disney's credit, I think they smoothed over a lot (and Gaston's devolution helps cover the remaining cracks.)
3:17 never fails to give me chills.
What?
What?
They would totally spend hours trying to recreate the whole city/kingdom.
Let's be real, this song makes you feel grateful for what you got.
Definitely one of those once in a lifetime kind of films.
Quasimodo's angelic voice is just everything whenever this plays in my head at school. 💫
Before I even knew this was a Disney song, or that this movie even existed at all, it was played in my class for a lesson.
Only recently did I realize how darn good this song is.

This whole film’s score cuts so deep 🖤 I ball hearing any song from this beautiful film. Including God Bless The Outcasts. Much love 🖤

9 years later, I think it is THE BEST.
Tragic what happened to Notre Dame yesterday...heart goes out to everyone who had to watch it x
I want to appreciate the fact of how Quasimodo’s voice is perfection. It’s an angels voice on a perfect body
Quasimodo’s voice reminds me of Wilbur’s voice/singing in the animated Charlotte’s Webb (1973) cartoon film.
It’s a little hesitant and unsure, but so sweet and pure and earnest.
ikr????
There is absolutely nothing nervous about Hulce’s performance here, that’s an amazing vibrato that you’re hearing. It takes a lot of control to sing like this and to hold the longer notes he achieved in this song.
That's _not_ nervousness, musically speaking.
He was so cute in Amadeus
Best lyrics and best score for a Disney film. Hands down.
i know you all must be disappointed how little credit this movies gets, but let us all remember that the most underrated, unknown, and unappreciated things are indeed the love and pleasing things this earth will ever experienced. wow don't i sound like a philosopher XD

3:27 to the end is just incredible. I mean, the whole song is amazing but this part is just so great. I can't not smile when I hear it.
this AMAZING song in hunchback of notre dame BURIES frozen in a second. also tom hulce's singing voice is SO powerful and gripping. this song is the reason i LOVE HunchBack of Notre Dame
This song is just so so beautiful and so full of hope! I love it :')
@@Anonymous-ng4wc Feel you man.. I wish you the best.
This song always makes me cry. Tom Hulce's voice is amazing!
You heartbroken that Tom Hulce retired?
The Duet Intro is just as powerful. The first 9 seconds of the track is the most ridiculously awesome thing I've ever heard.
Samuel Bradley I strongly agree. I can’t stop listening to it!

Its breathtaking, honestly. The composition in this film is nothing short of genius.
I love the lyric “heedless of the gift it is to be them.” It just has this wonderful ring and meaning to it💖
I really appreciate how Quasimodo and Frollo have songs when one of them ends their song the other starts theirs.
I also appreciate how Quasimodos songs are happy and positive but Frollos are sinister and negative they are definitely one of the best hero/bad guy Bundles I've ever seen.
Okay so can we just talk about the awesomeness of Tony Jay's singing here? It has such a darkness to it.
This movie deserves so much more credit
This was my favorite movie as a kid. The music, the story, the art...chills. Just...even as a kid, it spoke to me on a spiritual level.
Tom Hulce was the perfect voice for Quasimodo. It really gave him a kindness and innocence that everyone computes immediately.
Alexandra Rangel couldn't of said it better
You should type in pictures of Tom Hulce when he was young. Oh my god! He was so smoking hot!
Alexandra Rangel IKR! you're the first person that agrees with me! young tom hulce is definitely my celebrity crush.😂

He was pretty much a thirst bait in our class after my teacher showed the film Amadeus in class ^^;
Besides the score and singing being immaculate, the song fits perfectly into the movie, it's fits into the plot seamlessly and important for character development. 10/10
everytime i listen to any of this movie's songs I start to tear up. The orchestra and the lyrics are so beautiful. old Disney really knew how to make me cry.
oooook.
