  • After spending a day playing in the blacksmith shop at Old Mill Pond Museum, I decided to try making my own wood fired Forge. It seems the design will work, but the cinder block pads I used can’t handle the heat. None the less it was a fun project.

Very cool!!! I like that design. I'm sure you'll get some fire bricks to fix her up! ⚒🔥👍🏻

Carolina Chris Outdoors I’ve got to figure something out, and get going again. I was hoping to find a less expensive alternative to fire bricks, but it looks like they’re the way to go.

That is a really cool design. Looks like it should work really well. Maybe you could replace the concrete blocks with some fire brick.

thanks for sharing, i'm sure old fireplace firebricks can go in there sideways
i appreciate the video as i learned your square pipe invention thats really the best part for me
as it makes snug 90 degree placement for the blocks

I appreciate your comment. If I try it again fire brick would be the way to go. I also think the hair dryer moves too much air.

I have an unlimited supply of wood, so I’m trying to stick with it. I know a coal fired forge would be much better.

Get some old or unused ceramic tiles to line the inside, might help to distribute the heat more evenly across the bricks!

    Great work man
Try improve your insulation it's probably going to hold the heat a lot longer and get a lot hotter

Wallace Vivian I you do, don’t use cinder block. I have a small harbor freight anvil, but need something heavier.

The Good of the Land Yeah, I’ve got to get some fire bricks. I made this the day after we got back from visiting you at the museum. I really need to get it in good working order.

Are those just regular bricks? Or actual firebrick?

Don’t use concrete blocks unless firebrick. Or make your own with waterglass and concrete mix.

Do you have an anvil or an anvilish facsimile?

    • @JohnCapps
      @JohnCapps  6 років тому

David West I have a small Harbor Freight 15# anvil. If I do decide to get serious about forging I’ll need to get something heavier.

I see you got the blacksmith bug. It dot the metal hot enough to forge.
