    FEEDING A KITTEN:
Under fed and underweight kittens get sick and can die.
Look at the body weight chart in my video to make sure you are feeding your cats enough food! So most Veterinarians use a 1-9 Body condition scale, 1 being underweight - bones showing ribs and pelvis bones easily palpable and 9 being obese or overweight. We want to shoot for a 5 which puts your cat an ideal body weight with some fat covering the entire body but with a nice abdominal tuck. So you can always refer to this chart to make sure your kitten or cat is not too skinny.
Kittens will however have more lanky arms and legs with a round pudgy abdomen until about 5 months old when it should start to tighten up and tuck in. Too round can mean parasites so always have your vet examine your kitten!
First I have to start with always… always… always! feed your kitten a cat food formulated diet from any company. Cats need more protein and have a dietary need for taurine since the have limited enzymatic activity for making it on their own.
Kittens should go to new homes around 8 weeks old.
Feeding kittens and cats is easy and most cats are similar in weight. So lets make this as easy as possible. First off, I always recommend offering your kittens a buffet of the same brand of wet and dry kibble. Some kittens maybe too young when you get them to want dry kibble but they normally love wet food by 3-4 weeks old when theyre weaning off their moms.
For an 8 week old kitten weighing 1lb +, feed them 1/4th cup dry food and 1/4 small can wet food three times a day. Do not be worried if they don’t eat it at every meal. Cats WASTE FOOD. Pick it up, throw it away and replenish with fresh food. All you need is a few bites to ensure your kitten has an appetite and is eating. Some kittens are closet eaters and may want to eat alone.
At 4 months old you can feed them ½ cup dry food with ½ small can wet food three times a day. Put tin foil over the extra food and keep it in the fridge to stay fresh. If you can’t feed them 3x a day, leave the morning portion out the whole day until dinner and refresh their food.
This feeding schedule will get you through to 8 months to 1 years old. At this time if your cat is 8 to 10lbs you can feed them 1 cup dry food twice a day or continue with your ½ cup dry and 1 full can wet twice a day.
Easy as that! Check their body condition score and make sure theyre not too skinny or obese. And you can increase and decrease food by 1/4th cup for either case.
Most importantly with kittens and cats is they have to eat. So make sure they don’t skip 2 days of eating. This puts them at danger for fatty liver disease which is deadly to cats.
Okay guys! If you have any other feeding questions for your kittens or cats please put it in the comments below. Don’t forget to Subscribe to my channel and ill see you next week!

This was pretty useful. Nobody ever cleared it up like this. My 5 month old kitten keeps stealing my 2 yr olds food and eats like she has food insecurity from before we got her. She cleans out her own and her brother's bowl too. The older one is a picky eater and over sensitive and will go hungry sometimes

As soon as she started yelling at me, and telling me that you can transition your cat to 100% dry food, I know this is INCORRECT information. ALL cats need wet food, it's how they get 90% of their fluids. Advice to the 'vet', get a lapel mike so you don't have to yell at your viewers.

most helpful video on youtube!! she cuts to the chase and doesnt waste your time with background info, history lessons or animal psychology LOL i have a 2year old tabby stray who i feed 2x a day. i hand mix 1 scoop of kibble with a quarter of wet food. I use the protein scoop that comes with my protein shake powder. Smoke usually eats all of that without any waste - so i think thats the right quantity for him. i do give him snack of tiny chunks of tuna, flounder or shrimp - approx the size of a penny - 2-3 sections at a time after play. i do that about 2x a day

So I followed your advice since I’m a first time kitten owner/ caregiver.
I’ve had my kitten for 2 months now and took her for her 4 month rabies shot and checkup.
Kitten looks like she’s swallowed a ball- vet says kitten is overweight and needs to go on a diet.
My kitten was spayed at 2 months old before they released her to us so my vet thinks this could be the reason why she’s overweight.
Hopefully this comment helps prevent this for someone else.
💔Update: my vet misdiagnosed my kitten whose tummy was filled with fluid because she had FIP. Vet made me place her on a diet. FIP is rapidly progressive and fatal. Unfortunately my kitten passed away 3 weeks later (last week). I was worried she wasn’t fat and spent days researching what else it could be. 2 weeks into her diet I could feel her ribs and spine but her tummy was soft but still huge, she showed no signs of pain when I touched her tummy but I was still worried it wasn’t fat. Internet chat with vet-vet still insisted it’s because she’s fat and that she’s lethargic because she’s been spayed young at the shelter, said it’ll take a few month for her hormones to settle. A few days later she couldn’t walk more than 3 steps without rest and couldn’t climb the couch. I did my research and took her to the vet next morning, told her I think maybe my kitten has something called FIP and asked her to check for fluids. Vet drained almost 3 CUPS of fluid and reweighed my kitten who turned out to now be underweight and it was too late for her- she passed away the next day 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
Figured I’d update since original comment I had the belief that this vet caused my kitten to become obese.

Thanks for the quick and easy tips. I would just recommend to everyone to spend a little time on your cat. Take an hour to research what kinds of food are best for them (macro and micro nutrient content) and what will fit into your budget. Also, all food should have the calorie content printed on it, just like human food. Use multiple reputable calorie calculators to get an average based on your cats weight, age, and neuter/spay status. Then, feed based on their calorie requirements and according to the appearance scale. It doesn't take much time to get this down.
And take pictures; it's an easy and convenient way to track your cats progress.

Two kittens, bout three months old. I give them 1/2 portions of wet food 4 times a day (morning, lunch, diner, evening), and they have kibble on tap. They seem to self-regulate, they settle for half-portion meals, else they leave some to dry and it's disgusting.
They snack on kibble a little bit through the day, but they much prefer the wet food. They run around the living room all day and don't lack any energy whatsoever.

NEVER, I repeat NEVER!!!! should you feed your cat only dry food when they get older like she says at min 2:03. My wife's childhood cat died because of complication with urinary crystals. It is well known that cats need a lot of moisture in their diet. Specially male cats!!!! Do your research please. Ill always remember this quote, "THE WORST CAT WET FOOD IS BETTER THAN THE BEST CAT DRY FOOD"
Edit: if you can avoid dry food all together that is better. Please see other videos, do more research. You'll see that it is true

    • @drlindsaybutzer
      @drlindsaybutzer  Місяць тому

Yes, you could feed a cat only dry food as long as it has water available to drink, if you notice your cat doesn't drink water it would be better to keep that cat on wet food only so it stays hydrated. It also depends on the cat and its health issues, your wife's cat might have had underlying urinary issues which in that case would have been better for it to only eat wet food. I'm sorry she had to go through that.

    • @nicolastroya2594

I appreciate your reply, however, I feel that this (hydration and wet food vs dry food) is something that you DID NOT address in your video. Cats are known for not drinking water. So even if they have “water available to drink” it is usually not enough. It is important that people know what they are feeding their cats. It is NOT OK TO BLINDLY TRUST a vet, a UA-cam video, or a food company. I formed my own opinion based on a ton of research that I have done (some of it is shown down in this comment) and I think that people should do the same (RESEARCH AND FORM YOUR OWN OPINIONS). If at the end you do not agree with me, that is ok 🙂.
To everyone watching this video and reading the comments:
I am adding this reply to give you my reasonings for my previous comment in which I stated that dry food alone as a diet is not good for your cat. PLEASE TAKE A SECOND TO READ THIS AND MAKE YOUR OWN DECISION. I understand that to many of you I am just a random commenter that will not have leverage against the veterinarian shown in this video. However, this topic is very close to my heart, I FEEL LIKE I OWE IT TO EVERY CAT OWNER TO PROVIDE THE INFORMATION FOR YOU TO READ YOURSELF.
      • I have done a lot of research on how to find the best wet food (Based on Cat nutritionist’s opinions, Pet nutritionist, other experts’ opinions, the internet, UA-cam) and have added it to the bottom.
      • One of my favourite series on cat food is this one:
      ua-cam.com/video/6cvxA1CMbMQ/v-deo.html&pp=iAQB
      SUMMARY OF ALL THE INFORMATION:
      • Cats have evolved to rely on nutrients found in animal products, including most of their hydration. Dry food contains 10% water while wet food contains 70% water.
      • Cats, in general, do not drink enough water to begin with. So feeding your cat a dry food only diet is a bad idea (EVEN IF YOU HAVE A BOWL OF WATER ON THE SIDE) They also seem to prefer running water (it would be a plus if you can buy your cat a drinking fountain), it does encourage drinking more.
      • Cats require minimal amounts of carbohydrates (if any). Which makes dry food a poor choice for a diet.
      • Dry food is extremely processed, and usually is sprayed with meat flavors so that it becomes palatable for a cat. While wet food is usually preferred by cats.
      • Dry food is more affordable than wet food and stores for longer periods of time. BUT IS THIS A GOOD THING?
      • Water is essential for good urinary tract health (SPECIALLY IN MALE CATS) and may possibly lower your pet's risk of kidney disease and other ailments as they get older. For example, URINARY CRYSTALS IN CATS due to lack of Hydration (it is very hard to treat and can cause acute kidney failure)
      • I urge you to do your research. Again, a quote that I will never forget. “THE WORST WET FOOD (BRAND, QUALITY, ETC.) IS STILL BETTER THAN THE BEST DRY FOOD (BRAND, QUALITY, ETC.) IN THE MARKET”
      CATS AND HYDRATION:
“Cats are obligate carnivores, which means that they rely on nutrients found only in animal products. Cats evolved as hunters that consume prey that contains high amounts of protein, moderate amounts of fat, and a MINIMAL AMOUNT OF CARBOHYDRATES and their diet still requires these general proportions today.” As stated by the College of Veterinary Medicine of Cornell University
Cats, as a species, don’t drink enough water and may keep themselves on the edge of dehydration. USUALLY, CATS WILL DRINK WATER WHEN THEY ARE ALREADY DEHYDRATED. “This tendency is possibly due to cats' desert ancestry, where they mainly relied on food to provide hydration” (www.thesprucepets.com/how-much-canned-food-to-feed-554404#citation-4)
Cornell University notes that cats should drink four ounces of water per day for every five pounds of lean body weight. Cats that eat wet food will need to drink less water than those who eat dry food.
      www.vet.cornell.edu/departments-centers-and-institutes/cornell-feline-health-center/health-information/feline-health-topics/feeding-your-catwww.thesprucepets.com/how-much-canned-food-to-feed-554404#citation-4
      DRY FOOD:
      • Studies have shown a correlation between obesity and feeding dry cat food.
      • Dry cat food contains approximately 10% of water, and the other 90% consists of dry matter such as carbohydrates, fats and vitamins
      • Dry food is made by combining and then cooking meats, vitamins, minerals, and fats at a high temperature and pressure
      • Fat may then be sprayed on the food to ensure that it’s palatable.
      www.petmd.com/cat/nutrition/wet-cat-food-vs-dry-cat-food-which-better
      WET FOOD:
      • Canned food contains much more water-approximately 70%-compared to dry matter.
      • Wet food benefits include:
      • Weight management: Because wet food has fewer calories per volume compared to dry food. Cats can eat just as much (if not more) wet food and receive fewer calories.
      • Lower in carbs: Wet food is often much lower in carbohydrates than dry food, making it a good choice for cats with diabetes, who do better on low-carbohydrate diets.
      • Keep Your Pet's Digestive System Running Smoothly. The high-water content in wet food can make it easier to pass feces and may help prevent constipation.
      • Water is essential for good urinary tract health and may possibly lower your pet's risk of kidney disease and other ailments.

      HOW TO CHOOSE WET FOOD
      • Look at the front of the can at the name of the product. Try to find something that will say “Duck and Tuna (Beef and Lamb, Fish, etc.) Recipe” or similar. Cat food companies are legally obligated to write “Recipe, Dinner, etc.” if there is 25% of that content in the can (First named meat will have higher content than the second one). So, in this case my can will have more Duck than Tuna, but I know that it will have at least 25 % of a mix of both.
      • Look at the ingredients on the back of the can. They are listed in order of the most content to least content. I usually look at the first 5-7 ingredients.
      • Make sure that those 5-7 ingredients contain specific types of meat products, broth, etc. For example, (Tuna, Chicken Liver, Duck broth, etc.). Try to avoid cans that are not specific (For example, if they say Poultry inners/liver instead of “Chicken Liver”, I’d rather not choose it)
      • Companies will add vegetables to the ingredients to increase the number of proteins in the can. However, cat nutritionist state that it is better to use meat derived protein. So having vegetables is a good thing, as long as they are not a big part of those 5-7 ingredients
      • AVOID CARRAGEENAN AND DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHOSPHATES. Many companies advertise their wet food as carrageenan free.
      • The back of the can will have a Guaranteed Analysis. I like to have
      • Crude Protein: 10 - 11 %
      • Crude Fat: 8%
      • Crude Fiber: 0.75%
      • Moisture: 78.0%
      • Taurine 0.10%
      • TAURINE IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE CATS CANNOT PRODUCE IT ON THEIR OWN.
      • The best brands that I have found that check every box are Tiki Cat, Wellness, Nulo. BUT AGAIN, “THE WORST WET FOOD (BRAND, QUALITY, ETC.) IS STILL BETTER THAN THE BEST DRY FOOD (BRAND, QUALITY, ETC.) IN THE MARKET”
      • I feed my adult cat one 5.5oz can a day and 2/5 a cup of dry a day. I split this amount into three and feed him 3 times a day.

I mainly go with dry food, and have it available 24/7 so my cat knows he can eat whenever he wants. I use wet food as a treat. Like you would treat yourself to ice cream or a pastry. My aunt made the mistake of giving her cat wet food almost every day, making the cat eat to much > becoming overweight in the process.
And made him think he had the right to it every day. So every day at 3:30pm he would be miauwing until he'd get the wet food.
Wet food is more damaging to the teeth, has less of the daily nutrients a cat needs.
But ofcourse it doesn't hurt to give your cat sometimes.
If your cat has difficulty drinking it helps a ton! Since wet food contains alot of water.

    • @SillyFREAKout
      @SillyFREAKout Рік тому

Wet food is actually always the best for your cats. In the wild, cats get most of their hydration from food. Cats that eat only dry food are extra prone to dehydration and kidney issues as they age. I still feed my cats mostly dry food but I now add a pet grade bone broth to it that they love!@@civa1117

Nobody can tell how much they're supposed to feed their cats now because the instructions were not clear - What I took away from the video, as someone who feeds healthy food to their cat, is that I should over-feed them by a factor of 3-4 when looking at caloric intake- so yea, this is a terrible video that will create hundreds, if not thousands of unhealthy, obese cats that will have diabetes as adults. Let's be clear here - this "Veterinarian" says to feed your 1-2 lb "Ki-enns" 1 1/2 cans (5 oz) of wet and 3/4 cup of dry food per day - think about this for just a minute! Calorically and from a Carb perspective, that's absolutely insane, even for very active kittens!!!
