    I built one when I was 9 years old. Listening to short wave was an amazing experience. Back then, there were many more interesting stations on the bands than now.

    It was way cool. Worked well for a regenerative receiver.
    Thanks for uploading.

    Great video and a fun production too... I have yet to experience a legendary Ocean Hopper in person, what a great radio and a nice pristine example you have. Thanks for sharing and oh, Happy Birthday 2023.

    The "RNB" on the long wave band is probably an airport beacon. I can hear one that says "CHX" from the Charlevoix, Michigan airport, when I'm visiting my parents.

      You're right! I just looked into it. "RNB" comes from Millville, NJ. Thanks!!

    That's a later model Ocean Hopper. The original used octal tubes, a 117L7M7GT, and a 12J5 or a 12SL7.

    • @michaelsimpson5417
      @michaelsimpson5417  6 місяців тому

      I dated it to around 1959. (link under the video)

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 2 місяці тому

      117L7 was a combined rectifier tube to turn AC into DC power and a power output amplifier tube for the audio to speaker
      12J5 is a triode amplifier tube
      12SL7 is a dual triode amplifier tube.
      I am going to guess that the 12J5 was the one turning RF signals into audio.
      The rest of the amplifiers were needed to get enough volume for a speaker.

    The long wave coil could be rewound to gain the 15 to 35 MHz band, the one I began with belonged to my dad, and it didn't have either of those coils, long wave or 15 to 35 MHz.

    Fehlen noch die Alkali - Batterien , oder schon 220 V Kabel ?
    Sorry nicht gleich gesehen , hat auch 220 V ?
    Den gleichen grip Dip Frequenzmesser hatte ich schon mit 9Jahren vor 50 Jahren und 2 Transitoren in einer Stunde gebaut.
    ging auch genau mit Tabellenblatt.
    ok geht auch mit Röhren ! toll was alles geht.
    Als Radio geht es mit Nachverstärker auch?
    Noch nicht probiert. Aber recht gut verarscht !

    Вітання з Чернігова. Хороша робота. Регенератор. Ще і ламповий. Всього 3 лампи, а приймає навіть слабкі телеграфні сигнали радіоаматорів. Акуратний корпус. Ви майстер своєї справи.
    Можна питання? Промисловість США випускає електронні лампи? В Україні продаються лампи зняті з виробництва. Їх стає все менше. Якщо випускає, то мені пощастило.
    Good luck. 73!

    if radio had a decent audio amplifier and a real tuning vernier and DC supply it be much better.

    • @michaelsimpson5417
      @michaelsimpson5417  Рік тому +1

      This is one of the most bare bones radios I've ever used. The Space Spanner was a much more useful radio, and the Lafayette KT-135 was even better. The ultimate was the Knight Span Master, but the design of the tuning knobs was awful.

  • @boknows3841
    @boknows3841 3 місяці тому

    Its a piece of junk. My Uncle built one and put up a dipole antenna and the tuner was poor and if you put a signal generator beside it you could kind of listen to SSB. He sent it back and got a refund.

    • @michaelsimpson5417
      @michaelsimpson5417  3 місяці тому

      Maybe he got a bad part. You can listen to SSB on a regen if you tune it carefully. Also, it wasn't made for a dipole.

    • @kensmith5694
      @kensmith5694 2 місяці тому

      @@michaelsimpson5417 Yes, you can do that but you may annoy other nearby listeners. To make that work you would turn the regen control up until the stage actually oscillated. It would then mix its own oscillators with the SSB signal to make audio. Unfortunately, it also transmitted a little of that oscillators too.

      @@michaelsimpson5417 I should have been clearer. It was about doing SSB.

    • @michaelsimpson5417
      @michaelsimpson5417  2 місяці тому

      @@kensmith5694 My fault, now I see what the reply was to. You're right, this type of regen also transmits. I've used a regen to align a tube radio by tuning it to 455 kHz. To do that, you need a modern radio with a digital display so you know the regen is on the right frequency. It's crude, but I don't have a signal generator.
