I remember Robert Wise explaining how the film was not made as a documentary about the family but rather more a compelling drama they could all be proud of.
It's so weird that The Sound of Music is a beloved classic but it's incredibly dark! I remember my friend saying they used to watch that instead of Mary Poppins as a kid!
Historical dramas will deviate from the true story on average around 15%-25% for dramatic effect, but in most cases including this one, it leaves the historical lessons intact.
I knew from a very early age Edelweiss wasn't an authentic Austrian folk song because it was in English. I do credit them for writing it to mimic a folk song of that era
Actually did you know that in the musical Maria‘s last name is Rainer before she gets married to Captain Von trapp) but in the film we do not know her last name so I have came up with a last name for her for the film version and it is Maria Andrews
They added songs to the movie that weren't in the R & H stage production and they kept out one of the most meaningful songs from the stage play. Also, Theodore Bikel was, of course, a much better singer than Christopher Plummer. Lastly, Maria von Trapp was a dynamic lady and very focused. However, to hear the children tell it, she was also very manipulative. Real life is always more faceted and more interesting than Hollywood or NY versions of it.The Trapp Family also published music books teaching the playing of the recorder. I used it to learn the soprano C recorder. It was a great book which I wish were still in publication. Personally, I prefer the stage version with Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel to the movie version. However, the scenes of Salzburg in the Movie are worth the watch regardless of any other good thing about the movie.
I would have loved to have seen the Broadway version with Theodore Bikel and Mary Martin as I also thought the the songs that were left out of the movie was disappointing. I thought the song Something Good that Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer sang was a very dreary song. I still like listening to the Broadway Soundtrack because of the way the songs were done such as the The Lonely Goatherd and I love the song No Way to Stop It.
This is neat. The 1997 version of titanic they added the love scene that wasn’t part of what actually happened there was no love story when it came to the actual titanic that’s what I was told in high school when they were talking about making of the movie Like the sound of music they added that to Titanic to make it more appealing to audiences
Here are several ways the film was inaccurate from a historical sense: 1.) The family would have simply been known in Austria at that time as "Trapp", not "von Trapp". This is due to the Adelsaufhebungsgesetz of 1919, which did away with all noble titles and predicates, such as "von". 2.) The film depicts the Austrians as disliking the Anschluss, the absorption of Austria into Germany. The opposite was true. Look no further than pictures of the welcome the nazis were given in Austria. In 1919, before the signing of the Versailles (Germany) and St-Germain (Austria), Austria and Germany expressed a desire to unite. In 1848, when Germany was forming from a collection of small states, only the German-speaking lands in Austria-Hungary were permitted to join this idea, known as Germany. Austria declined, because it could not dominate the new country on those terms. Trivia: When the film opened in Salzburg, it closed after three days. The locals hated it.
* Also the wedding scene - as beautiful as it is didn't happen that way. *Maria also had borne children to Cptn Von Trapp before they managed to escape the country. *The biggest inaccuracy was at the end when the whole family is seen trekking over the mountains to escape from the Nazis. In fact, if they were to do so they would have ended up being caught in Nazi Germany instead of being in Italy where they only just managed to board a train crossing over the border.
I don't know if you made a video about this one, but The movie The King and I is infamous for deviating from the true story. Anna Leonowens has an interesting life story that has nothing to do with the Beloved musical. The King of Siam, King Mongkut, also has an interesting story himself. Awesome video.
Uncountable times i had seen the Wonderful movie. What a coincidence and destiny, Maria was hired to look after Von Trapp's daughter sick Maria, later she changed her name and lived longer 99 years.
I think I've seen this movie at least once a year since the 1980s. It was important to watch it on television once a year before VCRs and DVRs. Some years I see it more than once.
If they try it, over the alps, the Adler Hoff is, a stones chuck from their route, nobody refuses a Hitler invitation and lives, so via Italy, the Von Trapps, end up In America

We went to the Trapp Family inn outside of Stowe, VT in February, 2020. Beautiful place and lunch was really enjoyable.

Great facts.
Don’t let the facts get away of a great story! Thank you for sharing.
I just love the sound of music 🎶 😌 😍 😩 ❤ 💕!

One of my all time favorite movies! The other one was and still is Mary Poppins !!!

I remember watching this movie back in Jr. High and not knowing that the Von Trap family were all real!
The members of the cast (mainly July Andrews) called it "The Sound of Mucous"

She married for the right reasons. You can grow to love a successful man as long as you already love his children ❤

If it had been up Clemanceu I think that's how you spell it Germany would've been wiped off the map sigh
Yes, they changed several things for dramatic effect, but the many lessons learned from the family's story are still the same
😂😂😂😂😂😂 That last one had me laughing.
That said, the story gave a light the world desperately needed.
