Deadphones - Sony’s late lamented 9.1 Surround Sound Headphones

- Few want surround sound headphones nowadays to connect up to a Blu-ray player…apart from those who do, and for them it’s tough luck. The answer to my present day AV needs, lie only in Sony’s past with the MDR-HW700DS

The (used) cat is both cleaner and far less complicated than those headphones 😂. You lost me at about 10 minutes 😅. I’ll just stick with my stereo headphones and wait for a cat to acquire me 😊.
i was about to post this very thing XD

Underrated joke.
Buying 600 dollar headphones so your cat wouldn't jump out of your lap is exactly something I can get behind
Well everyone else in the house appreciates it too, if we're being honest.
Definition of a cat person: Reads the parent comment and goes, “well, of course!”
My cat enjoys his water fountain that cost $100 because cats don't like drinking from a bowl. I don't know what you're talking about though. 😅
In my experience, a startled cat on your lap can equal claws in your legs.
Yep, as soon as I figured out where Mat's cat story was going, I smiled. I did all sorts of things to accommodate my Mr Whiskers, and never thought anything of it. He repaid me with 16 years of companionship.🐈⬛😊
The fact that he uses headphones not to bother the cat is the most adorable thing I've heard in a while
It just shows how much control cats can exercise "Dogs have masters, cat have slaves"
@@barrieshepherd7694It just means that cat owners respect cats lmfao. Cat don’t allow bad treatment. The dog does and behaves unconditionally

When youre being ripped off by a seller id expect a reufund plus throw in the bin, not pay sixty quid to return it
+ I thought if the item is not as described the seller has to pay return postage, you should only pay to return if you just don't like the item. I would always raise this with Amazon/Ebay first.
@@matthewn1805 That's what I would do as well. However these were purchased from Amazon jp and may be Japan have different rules.
@@matthewn1805 It may be because it's an international thing. Although in this case, it should definitely be on the shady seller.
@@chaos.corner The ebay rules apply to all sellers. If those dodgy phones were bought on ebay and were clearly not as described, then no return is necessary unless the seller pays postage. I've gone through this process many times, usually with items from China such as fake flash drives which were simply refunded, no return. The seller _dreads_ negative feedback.
@@chaos.cornerhe probably bought it via an middleman in japan (those export companies he has made videos about). If so seller should be responsible for shipping inside japan only (i guess)

That is the power of cats. 😁
The way it is! I used to say cats were just waiting to evolve opposable thumbs before they take over the world. Now, I think they already have!
@@lawrencehansen6788They took over my world when I was around 10 years old. I'm now nearly 70 😻
Well, cats are the very reason that UA-cam became popular in the first place.
2008: In the future, people will have multiple speakers set up around their living rooms so they can watch movies or binge TV shows with full surround, getting the cinema experience at home!
2018 onwards: People watch TV shows on a tiny handheld screen whilst on the toilet.
So true! That's probably why these sorts of headphones aren't really manufactured any more!
Or have the TV on while scrolling Tik-Tok on their phone.
Yeah it’s so weird and sad to see how people suddenly regressed so much on screens and audio quality and size.. i’ll never understand watching something on anything less than an ipad size at the very least..
My fancy new apartment has a TV built into the mirror in the en-suite bathroom. Problem is, the toilet is on the same wall, which makes sense from a plumbing view, so you can't see it from there.
SO true! Back in 2008, I set up a nice A/V system for my girlfriend - nothing fancy, but good stuff. Decent Vizio TV, Onkyo receiver, Pioneer DVD player (this was 2008), some quality speakers. In 2022, we met up and hung out (not dating anymore but friends), and she brings out a box and asks me if I want this stuff back. It's full of a jumble of the A/V's components and cables.
Me: "What do you watch video and listen to music on now?"
Her: "My iPad and my phone."
Me (looking at the tiny iPad screen): "Oh. I'll take this down to the car."
I pick up the box and take all that cool gear home where I find perfectly good uses for it.
I miss old Sony. Glad to see I'm not alone in that, I often get criticized for not 'keeping up with the times' on stuff like this.
Same here - they used to be a really disruptive company but sadly not the goliath that they used to be.
Well, it didn’t make them any money. It was cool, but people didn’t buy it. True innovation isn’t valued anymore.
@@djoetma I still have the inclination to view Sony as the first option, but I have to remind myself they're not what they used to be. Resting on their laurels after they were on top for so long instead of giving you that reason to believe "Oh this is Sony, so it must be the best/cutting edge." They coasted on that for a while after realizing they could and never really seemed to get ahead again before the rest of the tech world caught up and passed them by in the 2000's. They seemed to be innovative in hardware and now everything is being perfected on the software/firmware side while using generic hardware. Something they don't particularly seem good at.
But Sony is currently doing something similar with Playstation Link, and like last time it doens't seem to go anywhere in the competition of convenience over anything else.
Marketing just doesn't work, people will smugly retort that everything is "unnecessary" and then complain when the "necessary basics" never deliver the full experience. Always just " I can do that for 10% of the price!" and get 10% of the quality.
You call it "software/firmware side" seemingly with no understanding what these audio components actually DO, they ARE hardware. And as hardware they are also hurt by draconian US licensing laws, and EU micro-managing regulation like "every phone needs replaceable battery" which makes you need to dodge definitions and remove the phone capabilities of integrated battery systems. Or perhaps drop the off-the-shelf firmware, which may rely on integrated battery when this or that function NEEDs constant power. Now you must cram in also a BACKUP battery and wait for regulations to figure out if they mean an EXCLUSIVE or INCLUSIVE removable battery.
And then people dare just demand better marketing, like invisible hand of the market, but it has to rig their options like planned economy and guide them to not self-sabotage.
Not everything new is better, the scourge of touchscreens on everything for example. They really shouldn’t be in cars, nor anything you don’t really want to be concentrating on when all you really needed was a button or switch you can feel. 3 menus deep just to press a button that you HAVE to look at to know that you did? When you’re moving at speed in a potential death machine? Really?
Also volume wheels and physical haptic controls compared to any modern alternative on anything you commonly have in your pockets. God I miss them.
And hands up who wants the same comfort settings they choose every time to reset every time they turn something off. So why the f…

A stray rescue cat will love you forever! Few things in life are more gratifying than watching a former stray soundly sleeping.🐱
yea well notice that a lot. My mother brought a stray cat home which was sitting at DISKA. Tell you what, even though I'm sure she is thankful, she's still more often than not a real beast - but we'll never let her go again ^^
Just remember in the UK after 1st June 2024 it is an offence to have a cat unchipped. So if you adopt it get it chipped.
Absolutely. As a confirmed Crazy Cat Lady (although sadly without any at the moment) I can confirm this. My favourite quotation of all time is one from Charles Dickens - "What greater gift than the love of a cat..?"
Wouldn't have paid that price for a set of headphones, though. I've had my Beyer DT100 cans for 20 years and they're still as good as new, just renewed the earmuffs and pads once in all that time. Very comfortable for long periods, too. They're not standard issue in an awful lot of radio stations for nothing.
@@TestGearJunkie. ....and you can still buy them from a lot of retailers which in my opinion is more important.

The sweaty ear thing is why I always put fabric liners on my earphones. Aamazon has them in all sizes, machine washable, cotton and spandex, recommend.
That is a great idea and I never thought of that!! Thank you 🙏
Came for the headphones, stayed for the cat pics.
The cat now owns you! Same here.
That's how it goes. I went to the pound, picked up a kitten with a little pink nose, he fell asleep in my arms, and he had me wrapped around his paw for 16 years.
"I didn't want a cat, but then he was there" - that's how we all got into it... 🙂
2:55 apart from that: 10 year old headphones even if New Old Stock, the "leather" is more often than not cheap PVC leather which falls apart alone after a while. But in this cases it was sadly indeed used.
I used to have a set very similar to these, they branded them to use with the ps3 but they were essentially the same product. Probably the best headphones I’ve ever owned.
Nowadays this 3D processing is built into the ps5, so you can use any set of headphones plugged in to the controller.

Such a shame that Sony have stopped making typical consumer products like these, you always knew that if you bought Sony you would only buy once. How things change
Sony is still making consumer headphones.
@@funnyfarm299 True, but they are a bit more of a standard stereo affair. You're unlikely to get the same Hi-Fi ones like the ones here.
@@funnyfarm299 On the budget end of things, the stuff now made in China isn't as good as any of the made in Japan stuff was. Some of the current Sony branded stuff is like the Somy knock offs that were laughed at back in the day.
I still buy Sony audio, but the japanese manufacturers were pushed out by the Chinese and Korean competition, and the mid market sadly died. It's all either audiophile/enthusiast or cheap crap. So to keep going Sony sadly had to double down on being the PlayStation and media conglomerate, and away from tech
@@techno1561but are multichannel audio headphones ever deliver a quality "home theatre" experience? Many smaller drivers don't seem like they'll give you sound that has enough dynamics.
I see the Universal Cat Distribution System distributed you a cat, thank you for answering the call.
I always use this type of headphones for music, videos, etc. Never liked earbuds. The noise cancellation isn’t as good and one bud is always falling out of my ear!
1:31 Kitty!
You are such a kind person for taking care of a stray.
I’ve been feeding one for over ten years now.
She’s a tough old girl. Been through every kind of weather.
Unfortunately, she has never experienced a human petting her.
That meow on cue!
Those headphones are gorgeous and its interesting to see some of the controls/buttons and design language present on their current consumer line of headphones.
Its a shame they dont make things like this so much anymore.
I always respect how you show the honest experience of how you manage to obtain these older/rarer items
I live in Japan and went through two of the 7.1 version of these. Played my Xbox360, PS3, and Wii U with these and watched BluRays galore. The advent of 4K@60 killed them. Good times!
OMG the last bit with the cat has pulled up my memories of 'Tomorrow's World' which I hadn't seen since we immigrated to Australia in 1981 (I was 10yo).
Mat getting a cat was not the twist I was expecting...but it is a welcome one!
Nixie (as in nixietube) would be a cute name for a tech cat.
If that isn't a Techmoan name for a cat I don't know what is. This needs all the upvotes.
That was a nickname I had for one of our rats. Her name was Nyx but I called her nixie tube lol.
You could buy some cheap, disposable headphone covers. You'll get 10 or so in a pack and they're sold as 'disposable' but they last for ages, especially if it's just you using them. They'll keep the ear cups pretty much free from grease and would help soak up some sweat. I use them on my headphones and the cups look like new, but they're a year old and have daily, heavy use. You can buy covers for the headband too, which will probably save you in the long run, especially if the headband on those is none removable.
They just need to stop using this fake leather stuff. And the soft-touch stuff that turns to goo.
Cloth works great, feels nice, is durable and, if Scotchguarded, is easily cleanable.
so, you have been adopted by a cat?
congratulations
Just as an aside, well done you for taking in a stray and what a gorgeous moggie they are too! They made sure they were heard at the end of the video too!!

You can replicate surround sound pretty darn well via headphones. Multidriver headsets. I've had 2 of them, an old Speedlink Medusa "true" 5.1 with 8 drivers total, 4 per ear I recall. And by current set, Razer Tiamat V2 with 5 drivers per ear. The ability to pinpoint sound and the best feeling of surround sounds, that beats my 5.1 home cinema set in a number of ways, comes from the Razer headset. Setup correctly, and that's the important part, they are an astounding bit of kit, but I must add, main use is PC gaming, so they are cabled too. Both the sets mentioned offered unparalleled surround performance and I've tried a lot of alternatives that attempt to mimic surround through 1 driver per ear, as you say, they lose centre channel and the performance is generally average to poor. Multidriver headsets should still be manufactured, but didn't seem to sell so well, despite the significant performance increase, certainly for PC gaming at least, but this could easily have a benefit for console gaming and movies. They weren't very expensive either!
Always a joy watching your videos! Thanks! 😃👍 ❤
First of all, congrats on the new pet. What an adorable kitty. As someone living in an apartment, I was concerned about this, so when I bought a TV, I made sure it had Bluetooth so I could connect it to Bluetooth headphones. Because it's Bluetooth, the audio quality won't be the best, but it's good enough for me.
I'd like to see the "Dolby Atmos for Headphones" technology (software surround processor that's available on Windows and Xbox) built into TVs so I can use any regular Bluetooth headphones to get an Atmos experience
You've been had, Matt- oldest trick in the Cat Book. "take me in; I'm hungry and stuff". Now you have a kitty, which is awesome.
Kitty already knows it's lines. It's a natural!
first, it's so good that you take care of a stray cat and give it a good home. secondly, you've made another great video about electronics that the rest of us have never seen or heard of.
Thank you for taking in the cat! I'm sure he/she's very glad she has a nice person to relax with 😊
Couldn't help noticing how much happier you are with a cat. Imagine how it would be with two cats!🐈⬛🐈
If you can't find a new pair of a certain pair of headphones, there are some people that will make custom cushions and refurbish them. But Sonys are notorious for turning to dust.
They aren't the only ones to degrade like that. I have audio technicas that did that. I also bought some customs that fit perfect and are actually better and more comfortable. I also bought a wrap that goes around the headband it zips on. That worked well too
You can add Sennheisers hd 280 "Pro" to that list. All crumbly and falling apart... They still work though. Unlike those shitty AKG 52s which very quickly abandoned one side forever. These AKGs "cushions" are still doing great on the other hand. Earphones of all brands (Philips are a special kind of disappointment in this area) seem to have the "one side only working from now on, deal with it" issue pretty consistently. I don't want bluetooth bullshit that needs batteries or constant recharging. Do I really have to spend a fortune for some nice quality AND durability? I'm not even producing content of any kind, I just want to listen in peace without worrying how long until they die on me. jesus...
I've got Pioneer headphones from the '70s that are still in perfect condition. So it's not like long lasting materials don't exist. It's just that nobody uses them any more.
Love the cat. Makes me miss my old stray black cat we took in. He was the most loving and cool cat ever. Oh, and nice headphones too.
I love how happy and joyful you are when the cat shows up. It's good to have a chatty cat. You are very lucky they chose you.

Thank you for looking after that cat. I enjoy your videos, and this one was even more special with your little fury friend.😊
Very interesting topic. Thanks for the informative video & comparison! Oh, and: Congratulations on the new housemate!
My cat also comes to me and complains if I make too much noise with my speakers. One thing you don't think of right away when you adopt a cat.
Though anything normal volume or what I would say watching a movie volume. He will happily sit on the sofa with me and no complaints.
"A stack of Bluray's that's getting taller by the minute." I know the feeling lol
You can't beat owning the physical disc and getting the benefits of the significantly higher bit rate than you get through online streaming services. Plus you don't get the annoying ads interrupting your movie, like a rather large streamer seems to have started doing. I order all the movies I want to watch as a physical disc, I'll end up cancelling streaming services as they are not improving, but quite the opposite in some respects.
Same here, and feeling very smug about not needing rental streaming such as Netflix. The only issue I have, is choice.
Another great video, Mat! Not too surprised about the state of the earphones, if anything I'm pleasantly surprised that the other pair you bought didn't have their earmuffs disintegrating while just sitting in the box. Hopefully you get at least a few years use out of them. As for my own solution, I'm fortunate enough to live by myself with no pets, but my own sound options are pretty meager (just a LG soundbar that does 3.1.2.); since I use my Xbox Series console as my general media device (it's an okay UHD bluray player, not the best but it loads discs into memory a lot faster than the other players I've used and the media app support is much better), I've just been using a pair of Dolby Atmos-enabled LucidSound headphones that natively work with the console over the Xbox RF (later versions used BT or other options). I'm sure they wouldn't really compare to a high-end enthusiast solution formerly produced by Sony, but they have pretty large earmuffs that are easily removable (something I've noticed Sony has moved away from for some earphones, the WH-1000XM5) and mechanical volume switch (and being gaming headphones, they have a detachable mic). Quality honestly seems pretty good, and there's no Dolby Atmos delay. Hope your cat appreciates all the trouble you're going through!
So sweet x Mat seems happy
Choosing a pet is nice, but getting chosen by a pet is the best. Even if it's food motivated at first :P
With all the advancements in Bluetooth and whatnot I do wonder if someone could just come out with a decent base station with those options and let you use your own high quality Bluetooth headphones. Probably wouldn't be as seamless, but it would be nice to have the freedom to pick and choose either half to upgrade as time goes on without having to replace the whole thing.
I second that motion!!! 🤠👍
Always a good time to watch your videos :) thanks
I'm watched Techmoan for a few years now, and something about the fairly routine tech coverage (by Matt's very very high standards, I should be clear) with the framing device of the newest resident at Techmoan Towers somehow combines to be one of the best videos he's ever put out imo.

I love your videos! Never stop. :)
I appreciate you doing this video. I also have cats I don’t want to get out of my lap. More specifically, AirPods Pro sent me down this rabbit hole as well. Before AirPods I never really tried headphones for Tv. But I found the noise canceling and great Apple integration to be really helpful. Noise canceling for loud noises when my wife might be cleaning or just fan noise in the summer, or just so I dont disturb people sleeping at night. That and the spacial audio really adds to the experience.
None the less, I bit the bullet and got the AirPods Max, which have some caveats, but overall are far better than I expected. Not only do you get the Apple integration with the Apple TV, but you also get apples spacial Audio which gives that center channel feel you described that the Sonys didn’t have. Not only that, but when you turn your head left or right, the audio stays in front, It’s so well done that I sometimes forget I’m wearing headphones.
Point is, The Sonys are a far better choice for making an interesting video that fits your unique genre perfectly, but the AirPods Max are the solution you are after, especially given the price of the Sonys. The AirPods Max are not much more money. I’m not sure what they support in terms of atmos or DTS, but for a movie and tv watching experience, I haven’t found anything that comes close, except the AirPods Pro ear buds.
I think an AirPods Max video would be a great follow up. I know Apple has a weird reputation with their walled garden approach, but some of their products are truly superior in spite of the perception many have, that you are just paying for the name brand.
Lastly, I have tested the Sony Bluetooth noise canceling over ears, they aren’t bad, but not even close to the AirPods Max, otherwise most of my headphones are stereo wired headphones with great 2 channel sound quality but none of the fancy tech that is in the current AirPods.
Well, I'm sold, shame they're so expensive though. Also, your new co-host is adorable.
I love that little smile at the end as the cat joins you to watch a movie😊
Techmoan is the treat of the week.
Thank you for a wonderful upload. 👍

Aww, congrats on the cat! It's very cute how you buy separate headphones just so you can snuggle with your cat.
I have smart lights for the same reason - I can turn off the lights when I'm snuggling with my cats in bed!
Wow, that first pair wasn’t heavily used, this was mis-used. I mean, a rusty USB-connector? I’ve never even seen that. And those earpads to crumble like this means they were in some environment that made them rot.
The outro really made it all shine
Great topic Mat! I'd be interested to hear your thought about the modern spatial/virtual headphones in comparison. Sennheiser RS 195 RF seems to be regarded as a top pick for TV/Cinema for example.
I had bought Logitech G35 headphones back in the day. Maybe early 2010's. I rarely used them, but when i pulled them out sometime last year, the foam cups were falling apart exactly like that. I rarely used them so I'm guessing it's the material breaking down. I thought it was strange considering I used them all of MAYBE 20 hours.
Yep, that's exactly what I thought too. I had a similar experience.
The disintegration of „pleather“ is accelerated by human skin oils. Foam will start peeling off on its own i think
@@HNedel That would explain why only very minimal use causes it. For me it was a VR Box I bought back in 2016. Has the same pleather lining where it sits on your face. I went to use it last week for the first time in years and my face was covered in that disintegrated debris just like in the video.
