This clip was filmed at Terrain Tamer's workshop in Melbourne after Milo2 put in a hectic couple of episodes filming for DustEmUp down in Tasmania. As always when it comes to 4wding Tasmania turned it on, with plenty of submerged tracks, water over the bonnet, howling winds and bucket loads of soft dune sand. So as soon as we got back to the mainland I changed all the oils and checked her over prior to driving the 1800km home. The new Terrain Tamer dual lip seals meant there wasn't any water past the axle seals but the fact is that this is when real damage can occur - driving hard highway miles in a vehicle that's just plopped out of a whole load of poo! I do need to say that what I do in a service is what's worked for me as a bushmechanic over many years or mucking around and relying on with old machines. I know trained mechanics do things differently and respect anybody's choice to do what they know works for them. But I doubt any serious 4x4 driver won't get something out of this clip.
Best thing is once home all I have to do is pack and head out again - oh, sorry dear, it's not because....

Your the best roothy I always watch your videos and I still watch all of your lowrange and 4wd action dvd's I LOVE milo and milo 2
Just something about you mate from when I’d pinch my old man’s bike mags and read your articles to following you into the adventure world. You’re a true wealth of knowledge and live life your way how we all should.
Thanks mate, I really appreciate that - especially now, sitting in the office with covid... cheers
Hi Roothy, you are an inspiration to all 4x4 owners on how to love and look after your truck!
Thanks - it's a sheer joy shed time!
Good to see Roothy. The right oil and the right bloke.
This is really awesome and informative. I really wish I had the space at home to do this on my own.
Penrite is the only oil I buy thanks to you Mr Rooth
I have used Penrite for last 15 years now. Great product . 👍🇦🇺🍺
Amazing content
Video is spot on sir! Thank you for sharing!
Hi roothy your a deadset Aussie legend. I've learnt alot on servicing my landcruiser just from your videos . Do you still use flashlube heavy duty oil stabiliser and if so how much do you use each service ?
The green truck will keep going forever, and with all that fresh oil and grease, now the only grinding noise will be from drivers seat springs
Great video John and I'm with you on the penrite..
You and me both!
Also check the diff breathers that they're flowing freely. My rear breather was blocked and the pressurised axle pushes gear oil into the hubs, then they leak and grease up the drum brakes.
Good ppoint. I run all three breathers through to inside the cab just behind my head. So if I can't breathe I know they're not!
Great post Roothy. :)
Still using Penrite fluid. Good to see.
Learn something new everyday.
If you look after a Toyota it will pretty much last forever
Yep, I change all the fluids and filters on my Fuso every 8,000 kms. Cheap insurance!!
Is this a reupload? I'm almost certain I've seen this!
you're right - and I'm wrong. No problem - I'm married and used to being wrong....
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY so you ended up marrying the phantom then ?
I swear this video was uploaded before
Good old trucks need good old love
And that is that! Well said James.
Hello mate...do you recommend using an additive inside the oil just before an oil change...to get more complete flushing or so it claims? And if not...why not?
No. Engine flushing additives are OK for filthy motors on their last legs in my opinion, mostly because they really do rip the junk out which means the motor is turning on very little lubricant. This is just my opinion - and if the motor's hot and just turned off, the oil will carry out the crap anyway.
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY thank you John if you say no then its no...Messiah..!
Lets face it, if Santa gives you 4x4 tips you have to listen
IMO UA-cam mechanics should also be promoting the use of nitrile gloves to avoid skin contact with oil
I've never worn gloves and can't imagine working with them but I know a some blokes have suffered from oil allergies so good point mate.
Hi there, what's that for the leaf spring? P26? I didn't catch that word.
P26 is Penrite's penetrating spray. Like wd40 but a whole lot more powerful.
What about wheel bearings Roothy? I would've thought after the Balfour that would be paramount!
Well picked - they were checked on the same day but other than a fresh dollop went back on - that was a test for the Terrain Tamer dual; lip seals we filmed for anopther clip. Which I'd better go find -I thought this one had that bit in...
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY cheers mate. I have just picked up a 1975 Fj45 that I will be rebuilding on my channel. Cheers, Andy
hey old buddy its boggie your right all us old blokes use a bit of silicone on drain plugs even my 20 something YO mechanics but we also use it on diffs gearbox ETC 1 thing i would have liked you to touch on is over greasing slip joints
I notice you have the same affliction as me, calling the W in oil weight instead of winter.
When I got my first truck back in 1972, one of the first things I did was oil the leaf springs. The first thing that broke was a leaf spring. An army mechanic friend of mine told me that you should never oil or grease leaf springs unless they are the leather wrapped variety found on antique cars, the oil dose two things,it makes the springs over flex and break and also makes grit stick and turns into a grinding paste that wears the springs thin which also leads to failure.Ever since that first time I have never oiled springs.
I'd sort of agree if it was a one off thing but when you clean and oil the springs occasionally then it seems to work - certainly I haven't had those problems in thirty years of doing this stuff my way. And remember we're running good suspension - Terrain Tamer - with anti-inversion shackles. If it was a stock LandRover Series 1 or 2 it might be a different thing...
i wanna see Roothy service a Tesla truck in coming years.....lol
Wonder what oil Roothy Likes?
Melbourne to QLD drive, Well be prepared to quarantine for 14 days at your own expense.
Did you get into qld with the borders locked out from Victoria haha
As a lot of people pointed out, this was six months ago. We're restricted to Queensland now - Fraser, the Cape, sunshine, beaches, ahh, sheer hell....
I’m curious how you know that Penrite is the best oil. I mean how do you measure it to ,,,,,,,,say Castrol magnatec or other brands etc?
Good point. I've seen them engineer Penrite but most of all it's the forty years I've been using it in my bikes. On a motorcycle, a big air cooled twin like my Norton or BM or the old Harley, the motor is right between your legs and you feel everything. Penrite feels better, smoother, quieter - In fairness I haven't tried Magnatek mostly because racers with C sponsorship usually run Penrite too...
JOHN ROOTH roger that. I feel the same about Castrol which I’ve been using for around the same time frame.
I recently changed from RX SUPER to Magnatec upon Castrol’s recommendation.
100 series 1HDFTE (this time) 7th cruiser.
Also felt the same as you do re norton or BM with my air cooled 911 Carrera, but I used a Castrol semi synthetic in that.
I haven’t done any oil sampling since changing but will at the next oil change.
I like your maintenance focus. I’m like minded
Hi Peter Alan Clark
How do you know it does that?
Free oil? Did you remember to fill and plug the rear diff? Check near the end of the video.
Yes I did, although it doesn't show in the vid - I didn't see that, nice score! And while Penrite have supplied some of my oils in recent years with all the cars, trucks and bikes around here I'm still buying plenty! Good oil - cheap insurance!
JOHN ROOTH Fair enough. You always give us the “good oil” mate.
👍
If i lived in Queensland yep 20/60 oil. For me in Victoria 15/40 is the go.
What about NSW?
Good points - basically winter and summer choices, and short trips vs long drives. Plus old trucks run greater clearances than new - lots of factors. I should have mentioned more...
Roothy could sell ice to an Eskimo
Hey, I've got this beaut harbor bridge up for grabs....
JOHN ROOTH sounds interesting, is delivery included in the price? 🤪
Don't get to comfortable Roothy you might not want to go out again, what would we all do if you didn't?
As a lot of people pointed out, this was six months ago. We're restricted to Queensland now - Fraser, the Cape, sunshine, beaches, ahh, sheer hell....
The oils are a crappy colour coming out. Good idea to change it.
Thats just the oil. penwrite goes dark fast. gear box and diffs included its why i dont like it always looks nasty once it been warmed up a few times
I’m sure I saw this weeks ago
Was 6 months ago...
Fuel filter?
I did it despite having a water drain cock on the first filter, a Terrain Tamer special. It dodn't make the filming in this clip but is in another one - well picked mate, and too right!!!
Brought to you by Penrite.
Yep, best oil in the world and proudly Australian - like me!
I was told today by the workshop supervisor that most 4wds today are engineered to live a 5-10 year lifespan. Toyota designs their 4wds to last a 20-25 year life span. And that is what you pay for in a toyota.
Hmmm, I'd agree with that for Toyota's pre 105 Series but latest crop are much the same as the other big names - OK, but too electronic and common rail pressured to go the distance past the decade mark.
thats what the marketing department wants you to think 😂
this was obviously months ago santa
... didn't i watch this video already?
I use Wixs Filters
Didn’t you already made this?
Don't think so - but probably plenty like it over the years!!!
JOHN ROOTH yeah your not wrong there John. And I you big fan I remember when I was in grade 3/4 I used to watch you on 4WD action you where funny and now I’m 16 and I’m getting 1993 hilux 👍
@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY You posted this video on 24/01/20 Roothy, titled "MILO2 post Tasmania service - full oil and grease after serious mud and water crossings." 🙂 The 6 month old upload came up as a recommendation immediately after I watched this video 😂
Love your work Roothy, & have for many, many years...... 👌😎✌️
basic, no bullshit good advice. Take this attitude to the rest of your car and ya covered
Have you had your memory tested Roothy. This is a repeat!
aha, too much liquid memories.....
Silicon on the sump plug and a spring washer 🤦♂️
Get the feeling he would love anything that is free from a sponsor... its like everything he says is a ad lately
Yeah, I thought this was an ad for Penrite products.
Men, without sponsors I couldn't go to work - but the trick is to pick your sponsors. It's harder to get the good stuff but worth it because then there's a long run.
How about decompressing the motor to prevent hydraulic-ing it mate?
Not sure what you mean here mate, if they get swamped then you pluck the glow plugs to decompress them but with all Milo2's breathing through the roof that's not likely.
