Thank you for the excellent tutorial. Took this as an opportunity to teach my two sons (16 & 11) about combustion and how gas engines work. We took apart the unit as you described and discussed the actions of the parts. Put it back together and she fired right up! Proud dad here and the kids think I'm a genious!

If he can pay all the bills, he should pay someone to mow the lawn instead of having his wife do it for him. Of course, he could be 73 and she could be 26 which would explain why he doesn't know how to fix the mower, pays all the bills, and has her mow the yard.

Thanks for the info. My mower would not start at all. When it was brand new it took like 10 pulls to start. The next season, it wouldn't start at all. I took the carburetor out exactly as shown. Nothing "appeared" wrong but I ran wire through the hole and sprayed everything with carburetor cleaner. When reassembled, the mower started on the first pull. Now I can finally sell it and get rid of it 😁

mower wouldn't stay running. came to this video..
I did all this stuff. Pulled out the carburator... Everything was clean inside..
So I started putting everything back together... Mad. Knowing that it's still not gonna stay running...
I started that damn mower. And it stayed running. I sat there for a minute with while it's running, with the "gtfoh" face... Mowed my lawn, enjoyed the rest of my day. Thanx

This just reminds me of a story.
The Lowe’s in my town is dumb. I bought a mower from them that they said had huge issues, including bent shaft that it wouldn’t start. I get home, look it over, the shaft was good, okay so that’s not it, then I look at the carb. Turns out the FUEL LINE ISNT CONNECTED. Wow. Alright.

Even though I built and drag raced cars in my past never had much need for small engines (city boy with a small yard). Now that I'm a retired old coot living in the boonies in GA I have the need for a powered lawn mower. Guy who lived up front in the property gave me 3 (1 electric) an older self-powered that doesn't run and a smaller one that looked new but wouldn't start. Thanks to you and your very well done video I got that little pup humming. Thank you very much!!

Thank you for this. My story is different. My mother's cat passed away this morning, she's an old lady and devastated, as am I. She mentioned the mower, I think to keep her mind off things, how it wasn't running. After a quick trip to autozone and doing a full carb cleaning I was able to get it to run great and mowed the lawn. It was something to occupy my mind and I believe it brought a small light to her. I hope this story brings you some light as well. God bless.

Thank you. I've got the same, or at least similar Murray 21 inch lawnmower, bought at Walmart a few years ago and this was the fix.
You were spot on en everything, the best 505 seconds I've spent all month.
the symptom was hearing the engine turn over for a few seconds then quickly stalling out even after spraying carb cleaner through the carburetor without the cover on it.
    1. I removed the carb as you had instructed,
    2. cleaned out the jet you referred to,
    3. and re-assembled everything.
    4. replaced the yellow foam filter after putting it's housing back on with 4 bolts. The only difference I had was at the start of removing the carburetor filter case, 2 of the bolts were 8mm and the two holding it in place, closer to the inside were 7mm, as you had mentioned.

I am so thankful that you made this video, We have been using a push mower for the last 4 year and its near impossible to use on high grass. I recently saw someone throw out a gas mower. I took it home got some carburetor cleaner, checked the spark plug and removed all the excess oil, even cleaned the exhaust that was filled with oil. Well by your video I was able to pull it apart the carburetor and put it back together and now this mower starts with one pull. I now have a gas Mower. Just like the one you have. LOL

When you open up the carburetor the jet that he mentions is crucial. The entire jet assembly comes out if you pull straight down- it's held in with two o-rings. He doesn't show this in the video. This makes cleaning the brass jet so much easier. Just blast it out with an air compressor from the top down. Once I did that, my lawn mower started on the first pull.
Thank you for making this video!

Use ethanol free and add some sea foam. I always leave gas in mine and have zero problems. I never use regular gas in mine. Always non ethanol or you can do this stuff.

    • @gabrielbennett5162
      @gabrielbennett5162 2 роки тому

I also would not buy more gas than you need to finish your yard, depending on how often you mow. Maybe a half-gallon at most. Gasoline, especially the ethanol blends, goes stale after about 6 weeks.

Bought mine used. Fortunately, my mower had a shut off valve for the fuel. I filled the tank before i decided it was time to clean the carb... 🤣 first time ive ever cleaned a carb. Air filter was impacted. Spark plug was also burnt up, that was actually the first thing i took care of. Blew the air filter out, cleaned whole carburetor with carb cleaner. Mower is running better than when i bought it from my buddy. Thanks! Great video!

Nice job Jeff!!! Very thorough and simple to follow...and your solution works. I purchased a Hyper Tough lawn mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine in the Spring of 2019. It worked great all season, but to my surprise it would not crank this year. Had I read the product reviews this would not have come as a total surprise. Your video saved the day. I began troubleshooting with new gas, then a spark plug, and checked the fuel line. No luck. Your video guided me through the carb removal and cleaning. BAM! 4th pull and ready for summer. A big thank you from a guy who has trouble replacing a light bulb.

Appreciate the video, Bought a new Murry last year. Had run it about 4-5 hrs and this year the carb was already blocked up. Watched the instructional video and had it apart, cleaned and repaired and running within 20 min. A local shop in the area charges almost $50-$80 to service a carb. With a little help , common sense and a guide of what to do Saved $$$$$

Just wanted to thank you!! I was able to fix my lawn mower thanks to watching this video several times. I learned a lot about gas and maintenance along the way. I'm sure it saved me an expensive repair, and in the end, it was very easy to do, once I had the right tools. After being in storage for a long time, it wouldn't start at all. After following your instructions, it would start, but only run for a couple of seconds. I let it sit on the porch for 24 hours, tried it again, and then I had to go cut the grass! Sweet, bought a pressure washer with a similar motor. I tried taking apart the carb and cleaning it. Thing was well maintained each winter and just quit. Wasn't getting any gas. I used carb cleaner but it seemed squeaky clean to begin with. It literally quit on me towards the end of last summer. After watching your video I saw you use a copper wire to poke out any debris that may be in the main jet so I thought I'd try one last time and see if it worked before ordering a new carb and it fired right up after I did that. I sprayed carb cleaner directly in that copper piece the first time too. I was at a complete loss. There must have been something stuck in there. That one little extra thing you did was a life saver, thanks so much!

Thanks for your excellent video. It got me through the whole process of taking the carburetor out, cleaning it and reinstalling it. I haven't tested it yet. I did find a couple of things difficult. I had to find something larger than a screwdriver to pry the carburetor halves apart--just happened to find an old cabinet lock in my toolbox whose base was just the right thickness. I also found, after some trial and error with various wires, that if you strip the paper/plastic off the end of a twist tie, it makes a perfect tool to clean out the jet and other ports. This was my first foray into an engine other than routine maintenance, so your video was incredibly helpful. Now I'm not afraid to go into it again if I have the same problem in the future.

Thanks so much for this fabulous video! My mower wouldn't start so I followed this step by step to service it - did the air filter, stripped down & cleaned the carburettor, dismantled the top covers etc, got to the part about checking the fuel tank. Wow, the petrol tank was empty ... supreme blonde moment!! Put some petrol in, put it all back together ... woohoo it works perfectly! (mental note - always check the fuel first!!!!)

The Briggs 450e benefits from opening the carb jet to 20 thousandths - a stripped bread wire tie can be used to check that the jet is clear and big enough. Doing this helps the motor run better and cuts down on the need for carb cleanings. 👍

I appears to have worked like a charm. Thank you so much for this video! When I cleaned it out a bunch of green colored gunk was all in it. Now I'm going to go ahead and service it and use it.

Oh man, thank you! Every other video I'd watched wasn't like my mower. B&S tech support couldn't help and the service center wanted to charge at least $87/hr and 3 weeks. Watching this and I got it done in 30 minutes and got to show my wife how to do it too...lol...

Nice tutorial! Did this on a Yard Machine 675 EXi with a Briggs & Stratton 163cc that has the automatic choke and it got it started. It had been sitting for 3 months and the jet got clogged and it wouldn't start. My girlfriend was really mad because she had only bought the mower(used) about 6 months ago. Thanks to your video I was a big hero and it only took about 10 minutes to get it done!

OP, thanks you so much for this video! I have the slightly smaller 300e series motor, but everything was the same.
You saved me at least the $150 dollars to replace the cheap mower that was giving me trouble. And now, I feel like I understand how it works a lot more than before. Great video, and I just wanted to say thank you.

Followed your instructions and everything appeared to be fine. I still cleaned it the best I could. Mower ran great for about 10 minutes and started cutting off again. Luckily I was almost done with cutting and I was able to finish the yard. But I still need to figure out the issue before it's time to cut the grass again.
