  • Ever wondered how your childhood shapes your pet ownership views? Zarna's Indian upbringing clashed with her husband Shalabh's fond memories of a childhood dog, leading their kids to get involved in the debate. The Garg family tackles societal norms that shove pet responsibilities onto moms, dream up futuristic robot pets, and dive into the ethics of adopting vs. breeding. And of course, join us for the conversation as we navigate the murky waters of pets as property vs. family.

As a single mom of an autistic child our dog is our protection. We absolutely love her and she also provides company and comfort for my son. I do keep her away from company if need be. I understand that many people don't particularly want an animal around them . I respect others views as they are entitled to them.

Hey! I feel compelled to respond to this episode. As a dog owner/parent myself, I would like to say that you can never know what it’s really like to love, nurture and care for a pet unless you have one yourself. It is absolutely not a one-sided relationship. Dogs may not talk to you in words but they 100% know how to communicate with their owners, to love you with their whole being. Yes, they are dependent on you but just like your human children. I can go on and on about the impact that dogs make on people’s lives but I must stop 😊 I wish Zarna and her beautiful family had the opportunity to know what loving a pet is like.

Loving an animal and owning a pet are different you know. In India we have community dogs or village dogs. They visit all homes and everyone loves and feeds them. Our neighborhood dog used to walk me home from bus stop if it was late at night. I would spend hours sunbathing with her in winter. Cried a bucket when a thief poisoned her.

Me too same feeling about the dog. My family and I truly believe I am a better person today because of my 12 year old dog. I had him when he was 3 months and my kids and dog grew up together. The selfless unconditional love he gives my family is priceless. I think we are blessed to have him. Not the other way. We as human need to adopt at least one pet. He is the best thing that happened to us.

Mom's aren't always the care takers of dogs, there are Dog Dad's who are devoted to their dogs. Thank you Brij for bringing that up. Zarna's clear angst towards pets is very indicative of a lot of Indian peoples opinion and it always comes from ignorance, a lack of first hand experience and/or a traumatic childhood experience with a stray dog in India.

why are you so triggered. This episode mainly pointed out the lack of ability of pet owners to draw boundaries with others about their pet, even with human kids one tends to have more and more boundaries and expected to behave but seems like all the lines go blur when it comes to peta for the pet owners. And to raise a point about it is not vindictive but your entitlement is.

I hope the dingo comment was a joke. Dingos are a distinct species in Australia. Street dogs in India are called Pariah or Desi Kutta. They're just a mix of all Indian breeds. They are not nearly as dangerous as you described and they're not a "problem" if they're spayed/neutered and vaccinated and have regular access to food and water. A lot of people go out of their way to feed and care for these street dogs.

I’m okay if other people enjoy it or whatsoever but people judge you so quick if you cant pet them or be around them even if it’s a genuine fear. Almost like it’s necessary.

Having a dog is a real treasure. I grew up with at least 3 dogs in our house. Though it is master slave relation to start with, they definitely become part of family.
I also think people should respect the fear of other people on pets and be accommodative.
I also believe children should be blessed to grow up with dogs. It makes them responsible and caring person.

parent and child is not an equal relationship either, especially if your mom is Zarna Garg. A pet makes a family complete, teaches kids responsibility, and bonus stay with you when the kids leave. A dog, unless its trained to be aggressive is pure love, while cats are a little aloof they too just show love.

We are more of caretakers/ guardian of pets and though animals are limited in their ability to express themselves they nevertheless communicate their preferences and emotions. My cat will through her body language and behaviors show what food she is into, if she wants to go outside for walks or sunbathe. It's definitely not one sided and it is human's egocentrism, superiority complex, insecurity and weakness that causes them to impose this slave master dynamic with their pet.

I hear your point about dogs ("slaves" as you state), being stuck in tiny NYC apartments and you think that's not fair to the dog and hence you don't have a dog but on the flip side apartment vs kill shelter somewhere. I'm pretty sure the dog would rather live waiting for its owner to come home from work, happy to be loved, sleep on a warm bed, have a full belly, go on walks in central park rather than die in a kill shelter.
And also what is a Dogs "Natural Habitat"? The streets?

    Dear Zarna,
I see how hard you work and how strong you are, but I also notice that you seem to struggle with many insecurities and fears, like roller coasters, bikes, sports, and animals. It seems like these fears might stem from a fear of the unknown and uncertainty.
I want you to know that it's okay to feel this way, and it doesn't make you any less strong. Sometimes, relaxing a little and seeking professional help can make a significant difference. I truly believe it could help you in many ways. I watch you every time and can relate to where you're coming from. Trust me, I am very much your well-wisher. Please don't let your insecurities hinder your overall growth or that of your kids. I know how much your kids mean to you, and as a mom, you can make positive changes for them, even if you find it hard to do it for yourself.

    @aparnaran День тому +1

Not a hater. I do enjoy your podcasts. This is the first time, I’ve felt at odds with some things that have been said.
Zarna, you have a legit concern when it comes to being forced to endure someone’s pet and have a right to demand that they keep them away or meet you outside. That is what happens at our home. We are dog lovers and are very clear that our home is our dogs’ home too. It’s their space and they are used to mingling with friends and family. We are not putting them away when someone visits. Having said that, we let people know that and meet them outside if they don’t want to come home or use gates to block the dogs, from reaching the people, if the outside visit cannot happen, and we have to meet at home, for whatever reason. We love our dogs but our friends/family don’t have to. But we’d like them to respect our love for them and not mock it or have unrealistic expectations of us. We take care to protect the dog’s space and the person’s space too. No random jumping on our dogs for cuddles and the dogs won’t jump on anyone, either.
Zoya, another legit concern when it comes to having to endure the boyfriend’s dog or having it lick off the plates. I can see why it might bother you.
Yes, dogs are high maintenance, especially when they are young or old. They are on auto pilot in between. They are creatures of habit, and as long as their routine is followed, they’re very easy to handle. Yes, you have to spend for the medical visits, but that’s not all the time. And, don’t we do it for humans too? Isn’t a baby and a senior the most high maintenance, wrt time invested in your caring for them and the medical bills?
Yes, they need to be walked twice a day, and taken care of, but any relationship requires taking care of. It all depends on what you want to do. If you think the investment is worth it, it won’t seem like a big deal. So many people opt for pets because they don’t want to invest in raising kids. Their personal choice.
The wonderful love that dogs give us cannot be described in words. I can’t imagine my home without one or more dogs. They are way nicer than us humans. Animals have a purity that humans do not have. They can’t manipulate the way we do. And if you treat them right, they will treat you right. Which is not always the case with humans. You may argue cases of a dog attacking a human, but it’s almost always the human’s fault that it happened. The dog may be untrained, isolated, untreated, uncared for…n number of reasons. People attack too. Mental health is a serious problem these days. I would trust a strange dog over a strange person any day.
This comparison isn’t right. We have a child and have raised 3 dogs. I’ve had kids be complete brats around me, with things like tearing pages of books or smearing cookies on my carpet; even going into my bedroom and breaking a bottle. The parents said nothing and I didn’t want to say anything because they were visiting us. Many such incidents. I’ve yet to encounter a badly behaved dog. That could also be because I understand their body language and respect their space and let them come to me instead of going to them. You must always let dogs come to you. Especially the unknown ones. And, you must not run. They will chase you then. I know. Easier said than done. Kids and dogs can, both, be badly behaved. It’s always the parent/owner’s fault.
Zoya, again, you’re right about rescue being better than breeding dogs. There are plenty of dogs to adopt. The reason why many people, probably, don’t do that is because rescues, unless puppies, have had trauma and people don’t want to deal with it. Just like with an adopted child Vs a biological one. Even a puppy can have trauma. One of our rescues was from a shelter that burned down. We got her when she was about 6 weeks old. But she’s scared of loud noises, bright lights, everything. She hides from people. You can’t even cough around her. She’s 8 now. Never outgrew it. Another rescue is a street dog and he’s extremely skittish. A pandemic arrival and so he never got used to people. It took him a couple of months to get used to us, but we gave him that time.
Since we are doing the kids vs dogs debate, and you brought up rescues, I’d like to know your thoughts on adoption. There are many kids in the world. Why do people still have multiple biological children? Not a personal attack at all. You guys are great. Just asking if you’ve thought about that. I know it’s a hot topic.
Zarna, it’s not a one-sided relationship of an owner-slave. If you love your dog, it will not be scared of you and will take liberties. They will refuse the food you give them. Won’t walk down a path, if they don’t want to. Will stubbornly stand until you go the way they want to. Will sulk if boarded. Many, many instances of them indicating their preferences. You haven’t had a dog, so you don’t know. Shalabh may be able to relate. He is the only one who has had a dog and loved it too.
This episode was pretty one-sided and felt biased since, except Shalabh, none of you have had or loved a dog. The rest of your episodes were about your personal experiences and were more relatable.
Shalabh, I’d have liked to hear more about how you bonded with your dog. How it interacted with people who visited. What you allowed/didn’t allow, etc. Did you train the dog? You spent very little time, yes, but you did say that you loved it.

Although I love love all the podcasts that have been on this channel. 16 mins into the video and I feel a bit disappointed and sad. I feel pets are not compared to masters and slaves. I am a mother to an Infant but before that I was a dog mom. My pet is everything to me and as important as my kid. It has never been a master and slave relationship. The way she has helped me through my toughest times and been with me. I cannot put a price to that while also mentioning that when my kid was born I leaned so much more that just can’t be compared to the former. Also on the point of men helping out, my husband had been great dad to our pup and he is a great dad to our kid as well. He helps so much in the house, kitchen and taking care of the kids. I think there are some serious biased opinions in the video and once you start living with a pet, only then you would know how your life changes for good. Also pets are way less expensive than kids.
    And Shalabh stole this show!

Oh, Zarna. I am happy you posted this, because it's helpful for me to understand a non-pet person's perspective. I will make sure to not even talk about pets to non-pet people in future!
However, since you brought it up, I believe you are incorrect that pet owners are masters and that pets are slaves. That has not been my experience at all.
Each animal will communicate to their owner (guardian) a very wide array of emotions, preferences, needs, and yes, opinions from the moment one takes the trouble to observe. Yes, pets rely on their guardians completely, and that lack of autonomy makes me sad for pets, but a good owner/guardian will do their very best to meet their pet's physical, emotional, and social needs. It is a relationship based on mutual love and respect. The owner/guardian has the serious responsibility to sympathetically care for, protect, and provide for the pet.
And 99.99% of the time, the pet responds with a very generous love. They learn our languages, routines, and rules. They show us tenderness, intelligence, and humor. Many will protect us with their lives.
They are not slaves. I am not a master.
By the way, most cats are going to make a bee-line for you, because they know you don't like them. Many cats just like to bust your chops, and some may think they can change your mind. Be prepared for a charm offensive. 😉

But the cows are quite aggressive in India unlike the stray dogs etc. I’ve been head butted by more cows than attacked by stray cats dogs goats etc in India 🇮🇳 and if you want to really insult an Indian person then call them doggy they just don’t get the western idea that pets are a fur children to lots of westerners 🙏 and to many westerners consider animals better behaved than most people’s children 💕 BTW you can just put a bowl of food out for your mother in law it’s happening in age care facilities every day as we keep humans alive far beyond what nature planned as we are all living so much longer these days .

I have a problem with disrespectful pet owners, not the animals themselves. When I had family with kids who were afraid, I crated my dogs. I've known people who pet their cats/dogs and snuggle up with them and ignore their family. To me, that's a mistreatment of their family. Of course their animals are east to love. No arguments, and they're always in charge. It's easier than a human relationship. Humans can think and reason and engage with you. Why would you not want to invest yourself in that instead of your whole heart into an animal? When people start placing animals as if they have the brain of a human, it drives me nuts. Dogs are extremely intelligent and wonderful, but they aren't equivalent to my children or husband. So I agree with you Zarna. And to call themselves a mom or dad. No. You're a dog owner.

A lot of people here mention their love for pets. It’s not about love or hate; it’s about hygiene that I have a problem with. Zoya just mentioned letting her boyfriend’s pet lick the used plate before putting it in the dishwasher-that’s crazy and nauseating.

I personally don’t like to have pets because I don’t have the time nor the energy to look after them on top of everything else in life. When our daughter got a bit bigger she begged for it so we got her an indoor bunny. It’s been good for her in many ways particularly having a sense of responsibility (feeding, grooming, playing). But since she’s not big enough to clean the hutch, I have to do it every two days!!! I just finished while listening to your podcast. It’s extra work for me, I hate it but I’ve come to love the bunny. That said, if I didn’t have a kid, I wouldn’t have a pet for sure. It’s not for me. I’m not an animal lover though I don’t hate them either. Some are just so cute. I’d be content to just look at other people’s pets. Everyone is different. People who love pets can’t expect everyone to feel the same and vice versa. As long as no one abuses animals, we’re all good. -- (“I’m a witness to what that cat did to my friend’s dog!”) LOL!! That was hilarious!!

Do think this conversation was more on babies vs pets rather than the pets themselves. Pets are not a substitute for kids and while most pet owners refer to their fur babies as ‘kid’ - there is definitely an understanding by pet owners that a pet experience would be far different to that of raising a child.

I thought todays episode on pets was interesting. Everyone had interesting opinion. Your husband was the only one who had a dog and he had positive experience. Zarna ,you stated you are afraid of dogs. I loveeeeee dogs and I am a dog lover. You can leave home for one hour or a week. When you come home the dog is waiting by the door as if he hasn't seen you for years.
I like the way Zoya talked about getting a foster dog . I too fostered two dogs who was severely abused and i adopted them.

Seconding shreychakra3446, in India I also think locality dogs which have grown up in a certain locality, do the work of policemen when barking at strangers or barking at any sound made in the night. The localites are alerted.
In return I've seen children and adults pelt stones at local dogs and run bikes on them.
Also an animal has its own character like any other creature the moment they are born.

Most of the Indians will be scared of animals because of stray dogs and cats. Most of the stray dogs are so violent in India.
Pet lovers can ignore my comment if it makes them sad, but it’s the reality. Until I came to Europe, I was so scared of dogs.

Zarna, it made me laugh when you said date Indian people because they don’t have pets.
Indian people love to keep pets! I am in my late thirties and grew up around 3 dogs (no pets now) and nearly half the people, if not more, had dogs as pets. In fact, more and more people are getting cats and unconventional pets.
Also, the number of animal rights activists for street animals in India is crazy
I do agree with so many wonderful points the family raised including boundaries pet owners should keep in mind while hosting. While the pet may be family, no one else is obligated to agree. Respectfully agree to disagree when guests don’t want to go along with quirks of pet owners

One can get pets because their kids want them. If you could afford it, I would reckon a dog walker or other things to care for the pets just as no matter how much one wants babies, they can't really take care of them ALL OF THE TIME with jobs and other things. I don't see a problem here.

No one wants to evaluate pets and children on the same level but I’m all for it! I avoid my friend’s and family’s homes if they have children. I find children annoying little bacteria carrying germ spreaders. Most of the child parents I know don’t teach their children manners but have very well behaved pets. I’ve never been biologically drawn to children, I see them as big naked slugs. But you show me a baby horse, puppy, goatie, etc, and I’m a big ooooing and aaahhing mess of a human mom. I have no patience for humans but you give me a donkey with a mind of its own, I don’t care how long or hard the effort is, I’m part of the equation until a solution is found. Some people are animal people and some people are people people. I happen to prefer the company of my barn full of animals and if they cover me in fur, that’s MUCH better than being covered in baby puke.

  • @ramsripathi3764

very apt, I like animals but keeping pets that are locked up at home is a torture and a power dynamic . Also the fact is that the pleasure the owner gets when the dog comes running when they return home. Also rescue pets needs a special skill for the owner. if they are not capable of taking care of animals with issues then adopting them from shelters will leave them even more damaged. Maybe you should put that out there also. One more peeve is the amount is the number of plastic poop bags that are disposed off in the garbage. Since you are influencers you should mention this also so that people use bags that disintegrate or the poop can be flushed in the toilets. Currently it doest happen because the sewage treatment plants can't seem to handle it. maybe your show can influence .
