Big change from the 1970s, when it was mostly Cowboys and Redskins, with the Cardinals up there from 1974-1976, and the Eagles starting in 1978. The Cowboys' long stretch of prominence ended rather abruptly in November 1986. After this game, Dallas was in a 3-way tie with NY and Washington for first at 6-2. But Dallas lost to the Giants the following week, 17-14 , and after splitting two close games against the Raiders and Chargers, they lost their last 5 -- 4 of them by lopsided scores -- to finish 7-9, their first losing season since 1964. It's interesting to contemplate what would've happened if Washington had won this game. They'd have tied the Giants at 13-3 in the NFC East. The top 3 tiebreakers would've been even -- split the season series, both 6-2 in the division and 10-2 in the conference. If Washington had won the decisive tiebreaker (whatever that was), the Giants would've been back where they were in 1985 -- hosting the wild card game (this time against the Rams) and then going to Chicago for the divisional. The Redskins would've hosted the 49ers as the 2 seed, and would've hosted the Giants if they'd met for the NFC Championship. It's not at all clear the Giants would've won in that venue, even though they did in the regular season.
John Manier John it’s a very interesting what if but I believe that Giants could’ve played on the moon in 86’, nobody was beating them, and I’m a huge cowboy fan. Lowest-rated MNF game ever, I believe. Also the first time MNF went against the World Series. It happened only because Game 7 was rained out the previous night. It wouldn't happen again until 1996, also due to a rainout in New York (Yankee Stadium). It wasn't scheduled that way on purpose until 2008, by which time MNF had moved from ABC to ESPN.

This is going to sound strange, but do you have any Giants losses of this era? If so, would you be willing to post any? I know the general reaction would be "why would I post losses of my team"? I remember some pals and I commenting that very night how we would rather watch NFL _highlights_ than live baseball. And it's still true today. Moreover, I still prefer watching NFL highlights from days of old when NFL actually stood for National Football League, in contrast to today when NFL stands for something else and is unstomachable, for me at least.
What does nfl mean now?
NFL = Not Fucking Likeable
that was due to game 7 being rained out on Sunday.
I remmber waching the mets with my bother and my dad we were like swiching cahannels baseball to football
I've seen 2 games on here so far from that season and giants run game was hittin on all cylinders .. morris ripping off huge runs left and right
1985... Joe Theismann....2018... 33 years later to the day.... Alex Smith
Sad.
@@madrecka at least Alex Smith came back.
@@bigdrew565 Yep Smith came back and played another year.
Simms wants quiet. Good luck Phil! 1:57:44
Well, I'm korean. But I want to feel the champion's moments. My team is Mets. A's. Liverpool. LG. and spurs. Please do not say it is just a dream.
The Giants and Mets play in the same night again this Sunday Night
1:54 ABC's Opening Signal Music 🎶
Wonderful !! Remember to yesterday
Sometimes Simms looks like the greatest quarterback of all time..Very impressive Phil
Redskins lost all 3 to the Giants that year. .including the playoffs
Dallas played them tough in 86, which looking back on is mind boggling. But Giants were clearly the best team in 86’. It’s the only year that they won the championship that they could claim that. Ooohhhh I’m sure Giant fans are going to be ready to lynch me but deep down they know I’m right
As good as the Skins was Giants was the only team keeping from the SuperBowl that year. NFC East was the best division in the NFL during the 1980s
@@RobertJohnson-mn3br ....the Giants were damn good in 1990....as amateur of fact.....STATISTICALLY....the 1990 Giants were superior to the 1986 Giants. ILB Pepper Johnson was the best defender on that 1990 squad.
byrongammon byrongammon use the eye test and go back and watch the 86 giants games.
86 giants 27 90 giants 10
Terrific pass from Simms to Johnson 1:36:55
L.T. L.T. L.T.!!!!!! GOAT
Two penalties for 1st downs against the Skins on the Giants final drive was huge smh
gonna cry
Anyone know what affiliate this was grabbed off? If WABC or WCVB, interesting they didn’t cut around 1:58:00 to break in, perhaps due to the Heidi Game.
As a Yankees fan I didn’t watch this game because I wanted to watch the World Series game seven. I’m going to get a lot of crap for what I’m gonna say next, but I was rooting for the Red Sox because I didn’t want to see that other New York team win a World Series.
@2:18:56 . . . shades of 1982 Thanksgiving Day versus the Lions where the OG slides to block Taylor to no avail.
1:16:54 when you know it's good right off your foot .. he turned and ran the other way without looking
😢seamen was one of the worst refs ever
1986 ny good night Mets win game 7 giants win Monday night football
BTW, the NFL Redskins-Giants on ABC was beaten that night by the WS Red Sox-Mets Game 7 on NBC, ratings wise.
John Manier and it certainly wasn’t low rated because it was a bad game. This was a great game
The Giants lost at Seattle in week 7 to fall to 5-2. The Giants then won 12 straight games to finish 17-2 on the season and Super Bowl XXI Champions.
Phil be throwing them darts - them bullets.
Refs should all be under review. What they see what they don't see
A Doug Williams cameo at 1:21:52 😊

Skins fan my dad made me go to bed 8:30 east time. He comes in my bedroom a few hours later to wake me up and say Lawrence Taylor's broke Joe theismann leg. I was happy they won but sad we lost joe.
This is not that particular game.
@@vernonrobinson1685 I see that
I thought it was supposed to be Mets/Jets and Yankees/Giants in terms of what baseball teams those football fanbases rooted for.
Not completely. My dad is one of those Mets/Giants fans.
It is m mostly
I’m not really a baseball fan, but the Mets captured the city’s attention that year. As did the Giants, it was definitely a fun year. I was 12 but remember it really well.
i'm glad they didn't show theisman's leg, it was too gruesome.
Wrong game that was 85 this is 86
they showed a clip of the hit and taylor waving to the sideline and clutching his helmet like "OMG!"
@@pp3k3jamail He knew he was just trolling. Schoeder throwing for over 400 yards in this game but he didn't know this wasn't the Theismannn game lol?
This is going to sound strange, but do you have any Giants losses of this era? If so, would you be willing to post any? I know the general reaction would be "why would I post losses of my team"? As a fellow enthusiast of games from this era, I think it's really cool when someone is able to showcase the good times, and the bad times. It's just life as a sports fan in general. Not saying one should post even half wins and losses, but maybe just a few from notable games. Depends on the person of course. Just a thought to consider.
Sure, I'll sprinkle some in. In fact, if you go through my page I believe I posted the 1990 MNF game the Giants lost to SF.
Ken Gelman post the 85’ game when giants visited cowboys. That was a great game 😄
@@RobertJohnson-mn3br I still have nightmares of Jim Jeffcoat!
Ken Gelman I’d be interested to see the 86 Seahawks game (last loss before they won i all)
Phil Simms was standing in the Atlanta airport . I said are you Phil Simms . He said whos Phil Simms . i realized he must not have wanted to be bothered, and moved on . Afterwords i wish i would have said . He is a terrible quarterback in the NFL.
@2:30:47....you cannot let that happen if you are the Redskins. Back breaker.
Al Michaels had the look of a recent college graduate!
Don't go crazy....
Was Carthon holding on Joe's winning TD ?
Also, why was LT not rushing the passer during Washington's final desperation drive ?
Riggo !!!
Ken do you have 1986 week 1 NY Giants at Dallas
Yes.
I recall Dierdorf was still with CBS at this time. Was Frank doing MNF games solo while Al called the ALCS that year? Or did they bring someone else in to help, like a college football guy?
10/6/86 (SD/SEA) - Gifford, O.J. Simpson
10/13/86 (PIT/CIN) - Gifford, Lynn Swann
Why is Scroeders helmet brown ? The rest of the Redskins helmets are maroon/ dark red.
I almost said because of the Giants defense turfing the fuck out of him, but...Astroturf. 😆
