Great video. I have a couple of questions. 1. What is the best age range to use that style of castration method? 2. What are the 2 sprays that you use afterwards? I know one is a fly spray, but can you give the actual brand or chemical names of what you use? 3. I need to make a leg hook like you have, but I saw in another comment that you wish yours was a little thicker. What size rod would you suggest using if you had to make another? 4. When you hook the leg, are you aiming for the joint at the knee, or midway down between the knee and the hoof? Thanks in advance!
Good questions. 1. We don’t base the decision on age or even size of calf, but more on testicle size. Some smaller bulls have big testicles so, we’ll band them, while we may cut an even larger bull. We don’t measure testicles, but it’s just more of a general feel kind of thing. 2. One spray is catt on fly spray. The other was a disinfectant, but I haven’t used anything but the fly spray in a while. I don’t think the disinfectant is that beneficial, but you can find several different ones on the market. 3. I think ours is about 1/4” diameter. You want it to be stiff enough to withstand the abuse, while still being soft enough to adjust. I’m not sure if there is a perfect size! 4. We want to hook below the hock. This gives you the leverage and control to get the leg up. Most of them will reflexively kick, so you gotta be quick. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Now I'm continuing the farm and needing to steer on my own for the first time. I had been torn between banding and this method but now I feel confident enough to do it myself! My dad made that one years ago. The one thing we’d do different if we made another one would be to make it out of one size larger rod. It’s just a little too easily bent, but that does make it easy to adjust. Thanks for watching!

Wish I had a a squeeze chute like that for castration!! Have only banded at young age never cut before not sure I want to attempt it but I have some older ones I need cut cause I let them go to long to band!
Yeah, the chute is critical to our operation. We’ll actually band them if they get much bigger than these guys, but you do have to use the special bigger bands with the crimp. Thanks for watching’
Yeah, we simply send in those samples to the state lab. I’m not sure that you have to submit them through a vet or if you can send them in directly as a producer.
Probably not a whole lot. Of course it’s a little easier on them the smaller they are, so I’d say that offsets some of benefits of leaving them bulls longer. We implant them when we cut them, so I think that helps as well. For us, the timing is based a lot on logistics. When we wean them, they are already penned for a few days, so that’s usually the first time they are run through the chute.
Like a vasectomy? That will only accomplish making the bulls infertile. They would still display undesirable behaviors and physical traits (including flavor profile of the meat) associated with bulls. Some ranches that utilize artificial insemination will use vasectomized bulls to detect when the cows are in heat and ready to be bred. Good question and thanks for watching!
@@rala5892 anesthesia is difficult and not very safe for small calves, resulting in significant risk of complications. As you see in the video it’s a very quick procedure with any distress very short lived. Having multiple animals sedated at once (we may castrate as many as 50 over the period of just a couple of hours) is not safe simply from the aspect of not being able to adequately monitor that many sedate individuals at once. You’ll notice that immediately following castration, the steers will almost instantly return to grazing or to the feed bunks to eat. We perform all our handling and medical procedures in compliance with Beef Quality Assurance guidelines.
@@HurricaneCreekFarms in my country you would not be allowed to take care of animals in maaaany years. I thiught things like this only excisted in india and things like that but not in usa. Here you must have a professional veterinary to do it. Not like that, the pain for these poor animals must be unimaginable. I thought usa was more developed than this
@@rala5892 plot twist: I am the vet (but you certainly don’t have to be a vet to castrate). We do it this way because it is safe, fast, efficient, AND humane. Cattle producers operate with extremely thin margins. Requiring only a vet to do these procedures or to do so with anesthesia would be time and cost prohibitive. We care deeply about our animals and would never do anything in an inhumane manner.
