  • We are used to seeing barcodes on things like the food we buy. But now, Sunnybrook is the first hospital in Canada to be rolling out a hospital-wide barcoding system for its patients for both blood samples and blood transfusions.
And the expanded system is helping reduce errors with the click of a sensor. Monica Matys reports. For more information, visit sunnyview.sunnybrook.ca

This is great Sunnybrook Hospital. As a patient (not Sunnybrook) who has been in and out of hospital since birth I can say that when you go in for a scan or procedure, you're so nervous that when staff ask you for basic information such as to spell your name, date of birth or the procedure you're having, you can't remember or it comes out as gibberish.
    Side Notes
    1. Sunnybrook is not the first hospital in Canada to do this. Stratford General Hospital has had this for at least 3 years.
    2. As a blood donor it's kind of odd to see the bag of blood at 1:30 because you never know, it could be mine. Hopefully my blood is useful to someone who I'll never get to meet.
