I ate Chinese food for the first time of my life at the Chung King pavilion. That day was full of wonder and joy for this boy from the poor side of town who lived in science fiction books and films. The world was much smaller then and more isolated by geography and economics.
I remember riding the skyride at brackenridge before it was taken down :/ only thing left now is the hotel, the park, and the tower!! Truly a great thing Texas did and needs to do again. With the way the world is so grim now, a celebration of culture and life is what we all need.

I was a sophomore at Edison HS in San Antonio during Hemisfair. Oh the memories. I won't forget those times when San Antonio grew up to be a "big city."
So happy to find these videos on YT. I was 5 when we went to the HemisFair - dad was stationed at Laughlin AFB in Del Rio. It was a nice 3 day family vacation - I remember it like it was yesterday. We left Texas when I was 6 - dad was transferred to CA and I haven't been back since. Someday I hope to get to San Antonio to see what it all looks like now. :)

10-15 buildings are still there, part of the water ski area, it’s circular fountain, (which still works) as well as a portion of the old elevated walkway by the midway.. Judge John Wood Courthouse (USA Pavilion) UTITC (Texas Pavilion) .. Lila Cockrell Theater with its tile mosaic ‘ Confluence of Civilizations’ , which can now be viewed from Alamo st, now that the original convention center is gone... I was there April ‘68, had an uncle displaced off Water St during the ‘urban renewal’, watched it all get built. Still remember the day the roundhouse locked at the top of the tower after its long climb.. The transformation of this downtown oasis into park/living space is simply awesome..
My older cousin worked at the Youth Pavilion, where visitors were invited to have hands-on experiences, creating installations and making mementos they could take with them. My cousin was very well thought of -- an artist in her early 30s actually "invited" him to move to New York City with her to begin his art career. My aunt was horrified and vetoed the idea outright.
We got to go like a dozen times! My Dad had clients from all over S. America and Mexico, so we entertained for a solid year in San Antone! I distinctly remember the Flying Indians, drinking dark Lonestar beer at the Texas Pavilion, riding the boats on the brand new River Walk and going up the Tower of the Americas to eat in the rotating restaurant - first time I ever sipped champagne! :-) SO FUN! I was 11 and turned 12 while there! So many GREAT memories! Went back in 1988, and went up the Tower again!
We went to San Antonio a few weeks ago! I could see myself living there if I were to choose a place in Texas! That or Austin! I really wish they’d get light rail in SA. BUT, I must say that the Via Public Transit system is pretty great! Very economical, too!
I just returned from a week-long visit in San Antonio. The memory of Hemisfair definitely lives on! We had dinner at the Chart House restaurant at the top of the Tower of the Americas, and you could look down and imagine the excitement of the fair below years ago.

I was so lucky as I lived then in Colonies North and our elementary class went to the fair for a whole day. It was absolutely wonderful. Plus the time my parents took us, we had just moved to SA in 68 and what an introduction to the culture(s) of texas, mexico and South America, etc. I am going back there esp. to see the Institute of Texan Cultures
What happened to Hemisfair the city turned it into kids park and water park which is fine but keep it as a fair grounds keep the monorail ride and the skyline cable ride as part of the park I went to Hemisfair when I was 14 yrs old and today most of it has died each yr have fiesta Mexicans singing and other activities it would be nice for San Antonio and every Sept have a fair use the fair grounds bring back some of that Hemisfair for two weeks don’t build bunch of apartments and other businesses keep the fair grounds alive even through the yr have some activities at the fair grounds don’t let HemisFair die it could be a big county or state fair each yr but salvage what you can of the monorail and put it back same for the skyline cable rides run them on special activities and fair each yr bring some of the past Hemisfair back please.

I went to a VIP pre-opening continental breakfast at the Tower of Americas with my family. I was 15 years old. Had Eggs Benedict for the first time. I also had a season pass, so I went almost every day that summer. Another memory was to talk to someone in Philadelphia over a video phone when I visited with my high school band to perform there, Today I occasionally drink scotch out of commemorative rocks glasses. :^)

Since I was into stamp collecting (and even more-so now 54 year later) I picked-up I think an issued stamp or maybe souvenir sheet from there. My BIG world fair interest is in the 1939/40 Golden Gate Exposition held on Treasure Island. (San Fran.) To this day, there is a BIG and serious site dedicated to everything GGE! It is amazing and is constantly attended with neat new stuff being adding regularly. They even maintain a channel here on Y-T. (Hey! Even the Chinese sleuth Charley Chan got in on the GGE bandwagon by appearing there for a mystery to be solved. You might check it out. As-yet, no movies featuring criminal hi-jinks at the HemisFair have yet materialized.) AS WITH the HemisFair, there too the emphasis was on ART relating to all of the Pacific up and down! Truly! The patron goddess was (naturally) Pacifica!!! Anyway, you've got plenty of years for 'catch up'! If you're into Fifties/Sixties nostalgia generally, I recommend "Recollection Road" right here on Y-T. CHEERS!
Why did they do away with the rides and all the fun stuff. It looked like fun back in the days. I live here and I know tourist still come through but I feel out downtown is dead. The Alamo is always closed under construction.
Well technically right now the Alamo is undergoing a huge remodel that will honestly bring back a huge number of tourists. It definitely needed an upgrade. And tourism has never been better. We’ve had two final fours in 5 years , multiple nba championships , fast growing city in America etc etc. Downtown has never been busier and it’s honestly growing and getting better. Even in the midst of the pandemic

I was there in '68 doing work and so did not get to see much of it, so this lengthy review is catch-up.
I wanted to go to HemisFair '68 but didn't get to go! I remember when our teacher started the class off by telling us that HemisFair was going to start and I wanted to go bad! but it didn't happen because of the longistics of it all so I always feel like what did I miss by not getting to go etc! I also wanted to go to the '64/'65 New York Worlds Fair same story also for Expo '67 and Expo '70 in Osaka Japan! but a couple class mates got to go and of course they got to tell us of their experience!
So since then I've always liked talking to people that went to all those Fairs and of course I more then have a large collection of Worlds Fair items starting With Expo '62 Known as Century 21 etc! I even knew where all the buildings went certain exhibits after etc.etc! I also Cringe at the condition and potential of whats left at these sites and keep hoping just one rich Trump, Gates, Branson Trillionaire does the right thing! as I'd love to go up the New York Towers 45 plus years to late!

I was stationed at Randolph AFB in 1968 but got transferred to California in late March, a couple of weeks before the Hemisfair opened. Never saw it.

There were very old Mexican homes from the 1800's. Maybe the oldest in the city from the 1840's
