Can we say that this is one of Depps best performances. This movie in general is underrated and all the actors were amazing. One of the best crime movies I've watched.

What's so great is the use of real locations, the actual jails he broke out of, the natural lighting and ambiance that is created with using the camera setup Mann in his later years has been so closely connected with. It gave the movie a real sense of authenticity, like I was there, seeing what is was really like to live the simple lives of most Americans and what people like Dillinger meant to them. It's because of this that PE has jumped considerably up the list of favorite Mann movies, and this scene in particular with the quiet moments of Purvis standing and watching the cars ride by, fumbling with his cigar and lighter, waiting for his mark - it's just dripping in authenticity and history and I can't take my eyes off of it.
The life of crime has one of two ends, death, or prison, or both. John Dillinger found this out, so did Bonnie and Clyde. This and the Highwaymen, great movies.
the fact that the gman felt the fear and danger of being face to face with him when he look in his eyes is enough to lower his weapon is a true meaning of a fearful man and also how melvin wasn't able to pull the trigger is mind blowing

Those of you commenting that this film glorified Dillinger and his criminal friends apparently missed the point. By no means is the film trying to say that Dillinger was a good guy. What it's saying is that he never pretended to be anything other than what he was whereas a good number of cops were actually criminals hiding behind badges. When J. Edgar Hoover decided to bring gangsters like Dillinger to justice it wasn't because he believed it was the right thing to do. It was because he saw a golden opportunity to make a name for himself and took advantage of it.
I ain't mad at that.... anymore than someone robbing a bank. People who want to get ahead and win in a game of gunplay & glory....I completely understand approve and even commend their balls commitment and ambitions.... The problem is, when you're playing these high stakes blood games, most always people end up getting hurt or killed who never agreed or even knew they were putting themselves on the line. It's not what JD or the Gov specifically did that I'm condemning or judging. It's the collateral damage, who got hurt and how most of them never even knew they bought in let alone wanted to put their lives at risk. However..... the simple fact is, had JD peacefully and without casualties committed these crimes, he never would've lasted. As it was, he and his crew directly initiated gunplay during their crimes. As far as after escaping the scene, any ambushes or assaults from hve Gov were still indirectly spawned from crimes, casualties and actions of JD&co.
Problem was, at that time, the banks were looked on as evil as the bank robbers. People saw Banks to be the real criminals. In fact evidence tends to indicate that a lot of the bank robberies that John Dillinger committed were pre-arranged. The bank would get robbed for $25,000, and then the bank would report it as $52,000. I have studied Dillinger upside, downside, sideways. Always was fascinated with him. How he was able to hide under the nose of the law. I don't know how they did pre-arranged robberies, and I have to look into that. But apparently evidence indicates that a lot of them were indeed pre-arranged events
One of the most underrated movies ever. Drops performance is incredible and the rest of the cast is also really good. This final scene is perfect. With the gangster movie he watches, Then the slow motion walk, The amazing theme that plays just tops it off and the overall feel just makes u not want John to die.
Unfortunately, while it's an enjoyable film, it's not a great one. The camerawork lets it down in a few spots (Mann was an occasional operator) and the screenplay is pretty disjointed. I thought Marion Cottilliard was a poor choice for the part of Billy Frechette and I hated Christian Bale. That said, for the most part, it's inoffensive and there are some good performances in it. I can't decide if it's a 6 or 7 out of 10.

About the Romanian girl, when the feds blackmail you to hand in a criminal or find yourself back on a ship to Romania (not the place to be in the 1930s), any person or gender would've broken! (Not so) Fun fact: They didn't keep their promise and deported her anyway! Most importantly, Dillinger knew he was done at that point (least of all after literally checking the files in the department). His entire crew was dead and the feds obviously could only get to him with the help of the Romanian "flat mate", whom he also knew was in a delicate position - The man wasn't an idiot! What he wanted was to die on his own terms, thus the final movie night with a great gangster movie.
I can finally say, I just watched Manhattan Melodrama after the longest time, of wanting to see it. All I can say, is it is one Hell of a movie for it's time. But this my view. With the lovely Myrna Loy that she was, and with the setting the movie showed it's so clear. It's a known fact that Dillinger had a Crush on Myrna Loy. And to be honest for the person Dillinger was, this very much was the perfect movie for him to see before he was gunned down. It fits him very precisely. For those who have never seen it your missing out. Both movies Manhattan Melodrama and Public Enemies both go hand in hand. And with this powerful scene in Public Enemies and then Manhattan Melodrama the movie is a piece of film history that can never be replicated. I give it 10/10 stars!
I wouldn't of said Dillinger was the bad guy, he didn't hurt innocent civilians and wasn't a gangster like scarface , I would just say he was good and bad but on what the FEDS done to him was terrible.
Actually during Dillinger's shooting the feds accidently shot and wounded to women bystanders. They also killed several civilians by 'mistake' during another incident. There are no records of Dillinger ever harming any of his hostages. A witness even claimed he threatened to shoot Baby Face Nelson for threatening to harm a hostage.
He put innocent people in front of him and his cohorts as human shields consistently. So he was either a bad guy or a coward. Could'nt have been a good guy and courageous to do something like that. He knew damn good and well gunplay was possible everyday he left his bedroom, let alone when robbing banks. It'd be more respectable to bang it out with police who signed up knowing the risk, than hide behind some woman who was picking up money for groceries and the water bill. As far as no record of hurt civilians, let's assume that's true. What about the prison guards or police officers he shot while they're working to provide for a family during a depression to satisfy his own greed.

Yes, quite a flawed film. Epic attention to detail in some spots and very sloppy in others. Patchy acting. Some great performances (Stephen Lang) and some rubbish ones (Christian Bale). Very disjointed screenplay and some odd camerawork. Enjoyable though.

Not sure what proper words to say this but here's a shot: Its awe interesting to know this is exactly (in regards to the movie flick) what the real John Dillinger watched right before his death that very night. Almost like a saluting farewell quote from the actor Gable to Dillinger as he met his inevitable fate moments later that night.
A film thats truly a masterpiece. Perfection in every aspect, dialogue, soundtrack cast, dialogue and so much more. Amazes me how underrated the film is, truly never gets the credit it deserves.
Watch 1:20 of this clip where Jim walks out of the cell after saying goodbye to Blackie. Now watch the very final frame of public enemies. The camera position, agent winstead walking away, the rising notes. Mann knows how to create a layered and powerful ending.
My grandfather use to talk about Dillinger. He lived close to the jail in INDIANA that Johnny escaped from. My grandfather would laugh. He was a caracter himself, not a criminal but a man everyone liked from judges, lawyers, doctors, business professionals. My family was shocked at the ppl who showed up for my grandfather's funeral. A infectious laugh and ability to out drink anyone with stories of running moonshine in the mountains of Kentucky are things I remember

That southern law man was no joke. He wasn't after some glorious shootout that every videogame playing person in America now thinks they could handle. He knew exactly who his target was and what he was capable of. Dillinger would've grabbed a pregnant woman for a shield if she was close enough. Shot recklessly into the crowd with no concern whatsoever for who got hit. Cop made the ID had the drop, got his shot and took it. He stepped up and got the job done, period.

this movie is the most accurate inaccurate film I've seen. Timeline is all messed up and there's many other inaccuracies, that being said, no one has or ever will play Dillinger better than Johnny Depp. The film was handled with a spirit of the time and the story of the Terror Gang. My favorite gangster movie. Loved Depp and Bale in this. This is such a powerful scene...you actually feel bad for Dillinger meeting his demise.

Quite a few eyewitnesses claimed Dillinger did not pull a gun. It was said he was found with the gun beside his right hand. Dillinger was left handed.
Had you been paying attention you're have noticed Depp shoots right throughout the entire movie. There are people who are opposite handed when it comes to shooting, playing pool, batting. Feel better now?

Music sounds eerily similar to the fight scene in A Thin Red Line... sounds like death is looming and gives me cold chills.
Yesssssss, was thinking the same thing, similar to that. But a lot of movies tend to go for this similar theme. The movie ' The King' the escape scene in Shawshank redemption (for like 5 seconds when hes crawling through the tunnel he made) etc and theres certainly some others.

Yes, quite a flawed film. Epic attention to detail in some spots and very sloppy in others. Patchy acting. Some great performances (Stephen Lang) and some rubbish ones (Christian Bale). Very disjointed screenplay and some odd camerawork. Enjoyable though.

that actually happened when he died. Dillinger was arguably the most famous man in america at the time, and on the run for a year or so, so hearing the gun shot and seeing his dead body would cause quite a stir

Not sure what proper words to say this but here's a shot: Its awe interesting to know this is exactly (in regards to the movie flick) what the real John Dillinger watched right before his death that very night. Almost like a saluting farewell quote from the actor Gable to Dillinger as he met his inevitable fate moments later that night.

My grandfather use to talk about Dillinger. He lived close to the jail in INDIANA that Johnny escaped from. My grandfather would laugh. He was a caracter himself, not a criminal but a man everyone liked from judges, lawyers, doctors, business professionals. My family was shocked at the ppl who showed up for my grandfather's funeral. A infectious laugh and ability to out drink anyone with stories of running moonshine in the mountains of Kentucky are things I remember

That southern law man was no joke. He wasn't after some glorious shootout that every videogame playing person in America now thinks they could handle. He knew exactly who his target was and what he was capable of. Dillinger would've grabbed a pregnant woman for a shield if she was close enough. Shot recklessly into the crowd with no concern whatsoever for who got hit. Cop made the ID had the drop, got his shot and took it. He stepped up and got the job done, period.

I could see or understand some POVs that may describe them with less than flatteting terms or glowing opinions of them ..... however "cowards" is one I'm struggling with....

this movie is the most accurate inaccurate film I've seen. Timeline is all messed up and there's many other inaccuracies, that being said, no one has or ever will play Dillinger better than Johnny Depp. The film was handled with a spirit of the time and the story of the Terror Gang. I liked it. And damn is Stephen Lang a boss or what in this scene
