Just as a heads up, unlike a lot of Glossier's reformulations Glossier You was re-formulated due to a cosmetic regulations update. The primary ingredient that gave the scent throw and longevity was hydroxyisohexyl 3-cyclohexene carboxaldehyde which is synthetic fragrance which is an extremely common ingredient in cosmetics and unfortunately ins an extremely common cause of allergic reaction. In the last few years EU has increased regulations around it's use including adding an allergen disclosure on products that contain more than 0.5% of the fragrance. Because of this Glossier chose to reformulate You.
I loved this idea 💕 I think Glossier set the standard for what we now consider “No Makeup Makeup”, but this video brings to light that since their peak, many other brands have come out with similar products, thereby increasing competition and edging Glossier out of the cultural zeitgeist. I have a soft spot for what Glossier brought to the table, but they need to get back at it if they want to recapture the interest of the makeup market.
@@malindarayallen That makes sense with the direction Jones Road is taking. I didn’t know that, but like you said, Glossier continued what Bobbi Brown started but for a younger generation that included myself.
💖I think the point you made about Merit taking inspiration from Glossier was interesting. It almost seems to me that Glossier was very much a millennial brand, and as we're getting older, I'm seeing Merit (and other companies) make kind of "grown up" versions of the products we loved from them. I also still absolutely love the Cloud Paints (Beam and Puff are my favorites for spring!), but I've been really disappointed in the new Balm Dot Com formulation. I'm so glad I'd picked up a few extras before the release. Thank you, as always, for your detailed, nuanced reviews- I appreciate how meticulous your comparisons are! 💖
I was just in Sephora today thinking how much I loved Glossier 5 years ago and how the brand I feel the most excited about now is Merit and Saie. Merit especially is the grown up Glossier. I also love Kosas so so so so much but I can no longer justify buying tubes of concealer that go bad in 6 months.
Yeah I wanna try Kosas but I only wear makeup on special occasions like I’d get a handful of uses before it would go bad 😭 it’s already a problem with makeup expiring in 12 months for me
💖 Thank you for this extensive analysis into Glossier products and their alternatives. I’ve had the sky washes which dried out way too fast, tinted Boy Brow which felt too dry and patchy and the Cloud Paint which I always enjoyed. If I could hug you for turning me onto Merit, I would! I just can’t wear anything other than those lipsticks now. I’m hoping the limited edition red becomes part of their repertoire. I’m ordering the Merit serum today! Love your aesthetic my dear. I’m 65 yo and can relate to your recommendations. You have such a broad appeal! 💖
MAC Face and Body is *everything!* It took me twenty years to try it (dating myself!) because there was always something newer and more exciting to try. But it's a pretty unique product that will last you through a workout if you want it to.
The Stretch Concealer is still my HG, but I don't really use concealer to cover hollow undereyes or cover blemishes because those aren't my issues. I use it for redness around my nose and slight darkness on my face without looking too cakey and it's PERFECT for that. Like a sheer, dewy foundation but with slightly more coverage than you'd think.
I too have found myself comparing Glossier to Merit products. I feel like Glossier was marketed for millennials when they were in their early 20’s and Merit is marketing to the same millennials who are approaching or are now in their 30s 😂
Considering the age of merit's founder, it's definitely intentional. Young but more established in life and more willing to spend extra for quality and luxury.
i mean glossier really only started w their forefront marketing in late 2018/2019 so many of those ppl are still in their 20s rn- as a 22 year old who started seeing glossier pop off in 2019
For the stretch concealer I find applying it under the eyes and letting it set for a couple minutes completely changes it for the better and increases the coverage. It stops it creasing completely for me, I set it with a powder puff and it looks flawless
I love your earrings! So cool and unique. I'd purchase them if you were to link them! This is a great video, I've been considering purchasing glossier since they entered sephora, so this video came at the perfect time! I will instead look into your recommendations.
I finally picked up the Stretch Concealer and I haaate it under the eyes because it creases super bad, BUT it's beautiful on the face. A great option for those that don't want to wear foundation but instead spot conceal all over. (I personally prefer the NYX Concealer Serum for under eyes.)
I'm so glad I caught this comment. I considered the stretch concealer for ages but something always held me back. Guess what my fav under eye concealer is!? Yup, nyx bare with me! So good.
I love Glossier You, but the makeup is just "okay"...I like it, but they've been duped for even cheaper. Love this video, Amanda! I always love to hear your take on things! 💜
This video is genius- it’s always so tempting to buy when new stuff becomes available/accessible, but there are always alternatives! I already have some of the products you mentioned as alternatives (due to your previous recs) so I’m so glad i watched this before buying 💗💐
💗 Amanda i wanna say thank you for helping me so much !!! I have a lot of anxiety around spending money (especially on myself) and your thoroughness and style of video has been so helpful in buying makeup! Also you’re presence is really comforting to me now lol and I appreciate what you said about buying the products that make YOU feel good ! 💗💗
Glossier really works for me and although there are cheaper options, I’ve snagged some awesome deals at TJ Maxx that make it basically drugstore price and I also stock up on my faves during Black Friday which makes it much more reasonable! When I can get it for a discount I think it’s worth it cause it’s one of those things I know will just work with my skin. Nice to get other similar product recs!
I still love Glossier You, it smells like no other. I bought a bottle at Sephora last week, it smells and last the same to me. People that want the same vibe but with longer lasting, you can try Radiant Nectar from Clean Reserve.
Absolutely LOVE lash slick, the brown one is in my Sephora cart. It’s essentially a lash tint with a bit of ~flutter~ which is my ideal office vibe. And it’s cry proof, lol. The lid stars are evil. I don’t even have sensitive eyes but the lid stars gave me blisters on my eyelids. I had to throw all of my eyeshadow out and avoid makeup for months. Reading the reviews on the site, I am not the only one. I really don’t know how they’ve never been recalled.
I've been so bummed since I haven't been able to get my favorite shades of the rare beauty blush (believe and love) for MONTHS but I started using my glossier cloud paints and have found similar color combos all because you started revisiting them in your videos! 💞 thanks for that hehe
This video is so satisfying. I had the same trajectory as you with this brand and as time went on, I felt so confused by their products and launches. Some of them were just plain bad and I felt weird for not getting it (glossier stretch, lash slick, zit stick, etc Glossier Play, I’m looking at you). Also, some of the products are just not user friendly. Cloud paint is ridiculous to apply and blend. I think they’ve lost their momentum and are not really evolving with my beauty tastes which is so weird because I had such a visceral love affair with the brand! This was a great video, Amanda, as usual! Thanks ❤
This ended up being a trip down memory lane! I remember when I first found your channel I think in like 2018? When you were referencing your older reviews I remembered watching them :)
I was SO excited when I saw that Glossier was available at Sephora! I really like their boy brow, mascara, and their stretch concealer. Thank you for including other products 💞 great video as always!! :))
Just wanted to add this to your comment, fractionated coconut oil is different, it's basically the coconut oil that stays liquid even in low temp unlike pure Coconut oil which solidifies below 20°C or something whereas caprylic triglyceride or medium chain caprylic triglyceride (MCT oil) is derived from coconut oil that has C8-C10/C12 chain length of the fatty acid (and this is fungal acne safe mind you but does not mean it's safe for someone with coconut allergies, this is very lightweight oil too nd most makeup has it) So technically MCT/ caprylic triglyceride is fractionated oil BUT when you go to buy it, fractionated coconut oil and caprylic triglyceride are two different things. Idk the technical chemical terms properly but wrote it off of the top of my mind, so take it with a grain of salt
Hi! Great info from you both. I wanted to offer two tree nut free alternatives sunflower seed and grape seed oils. Both can be native to north America, thus better suited and less negatively impactful on our environment here. They are available in many forms including organic, non GMO, and food grade. Sunflower seed oil is a good source of both Vit A and Vit C in a naturally occurring combination. I like it for my face, bath, body and my scalp treatment. Not so much for hair by itself. Grape seed is a _great_ source of Vit E. However it may not be suitable for use alone with dry+acne prone or immuno compromised skin, imo. It's better as part of a mix. I really enjoy discussing how the particle size, melting point and PH values impact the effectiveness for individuals. Thanks for being beauty nerds! 🤓🧪💄
Ooh hello other nerds! I just find saying fractioned coconut oil is easier to understand. Caprylic/capric triglyceride is a very common skincare/cosmetic ingredient. People who are sensitive to coconut oil may react the same way to caprylic/capric triglyceride. It could be a good ingredient to avoid in a situation where there is no alternative.
Amanda thank you so incredibly much for all your hard work. Although I'm newer to you/your channel, I appreciate you so so much. The amount of information you manage to pack into a single vid is awe inspiring! 🙌💜💖
12:13 ByTerry CC powder is the best highlight for the natural glow that doesn’t emphasize texture, fine lines pores etc. it’s expensive but refillable and has lasted me a really long time. I use the star lite rose but I’m not sure if they still make that particular one. I can use it on my undereyes if I wanted to. It is just so beautiful
I love Glossier’s aesthetic and marketing, but their products have always been a bit lackluster for me. Love this video, thanks for all the recommendations 💕
Your content is extremely thoughtful and refreshing. I really enjoy that you focus your attention on one idea at a time! Very useful information, as always. 🙏
Glossier YOU is my favorite perfume. I was so excited when they brought the solid back, only to buy it and find that it smells like nothing. And lately the perfume hadn't smelled as strong either, and I thought it was me until I read some of the comments on this video. Bummer that it had been reformulated. I don't know why the good things always have to change....
Hello Amanda! What an amazing comparison and presentation! 💘 Personally I haven't tried Glossier but I have seen a lot of reviews and my very oily skin would not agree with them, but I love Mac face and body because it is not oily but fresh, also it depends on the prep. Thank you again for being honest and for being you! I am glad I found you all those years ago! Lots of love!
I love Chanel Sculpting baume. I think it's almost the most perfect highlighter for me. Glossier Haloscope is definitely an older product though. I believe it launched in 2016, whereas the Chanel baume came out in 2019.
I have combination-oily skin that tends to get sweaty in the summer and my holy grail light-medium coverage product is the Dior Face and Body. It has a satin finish and doesn’t budge. The coverage is buildable and it doesn’t clog my pores!
I love the look of the Merit Day Glow, but I found the scent off. I thought it was like a rancid oil. After returning it, I noticed Sephora reviewers basically said the same thing. I love the Merit serum as a primer, but when I read about it, the directions were to wear it under sunscreen.
I 💕have only tried one thing from Glossier and it’s the boy brow which I love! I have now picked up a eyeshadow palette from them, you are right they are minimal and the colors are gorgeous. I do buy Merit and I do like their products also. I’m older so this is why. Thanks Amanda great video.
💖thank you for doing this! I have been dying to try their perfume. So sad to hear it is not the same at Sephora. And I also retried my cloud paint. It is really good, I agree.
On the fragrance issue I find that big stores often do not invest in proper shipping nor storage of products. If their employees complain about climate control off the sales floor expect problems. Hot in an employee break room means edging over that 75°F mark. Perfumes are particularly vulnerable, as are more natural/less toxic formulas in almost any genre except detergents. Although many are more vulnerable to heat than cold. Even hardy formulas like windshield washer fluids are affected, nothing like a mess from stuff that isn't rated for Northern winters arriving in January. ❄️💣 🤦🏽
💖 This was great, and I think the comparison to newer products was excellent. However, in my opinion, you’re not a no-makeup makeup girl anymore. You’re a natural makeup woman, which is different. I see so many content creators say, “This is too sheer”, “this is just a wash of color,” or “This isn’t pigmented enough.” That’s the point of Glossier. Although the opinions are accurate, it almost sounds like everyone forgets what the Glossier brand is about: youthful, sheer, fresh, on-the-go college/office girl who doesn’t want to look like she’s wearing any makeup but also looks well groomed. It’s like healthy skin but elevated. Glossier says skin 1st, makeup 2nd. It’s about accepting these lines in the lips; at least they’re hydrated and cushioned. It’s about accepting the hollowed eyes and wanting to perk them up a little. It’s about acceptance of the blemish and just placing a pimple patch over it. It’s about looking like I woke up like this. In my opinion, your offer is more. More shine, more coverage, more “heft.” It’s like Glossier was for the girls who are now women, and you should elevate to this. In my opinion, Glossier is trendy yet timeless. They experiment and bring in limited time items, yet they beautifully remain true to the brand. I don’t think it’s ideal studio, full glam makeup, but I believe it’s perfect, no fuss, all day, everyday makeup that puts you in front of the makeup and not behind it. That's just my opinion.
💕 I’ve gotten a few glossier products over the years I’m not really a heavy makeup buyer butt to this day I still love the futuredew and red lipgloss they were really worth buying for me, and I’m saying this as someone who’s fav gloss is the essence clear gloss 😂
I hate to break it to you because it was my favorite fragrance.. but glossier you was reformulated to remove an ingredient that is banned in the eu.. It's not that the ones at Sephora is watered down, it's the new formula that was implemented a while ago 😭
Glossier came at a time when 2016 makeup was THICK. So they became the cool girl model off duty makeup. I use to read her blog so i remember thinking at the time, finally. Natural beauty shining through. Ppl used their makeup to feel on trend but I don’t feel their products have cosmetic elegance as you put it. I feel like I could make it myself with existing products I have, mixing matching and just sheer it out. And I did /still do this 😂😅 I also can’t use more natural products because of the coconut oil and algae. They really need to re-innovate. Appreciate your insight and comparisons on this!
I have never purchased Glossier. I’m sure it is very good. But I like seeing something, like makeup , before I buy it. With that said I agree with some of the comments. So many other companies with similar type products now that I can see in person. (I don’t have a Sephora near me)
A thing about Glossier though vs some of the other brands you mentioned, is that Glossier is Cruelty-Free. So even if another brand has something that may be a little better and/or bigger bang for your buck, if they're testing on and harming animals, I and many others don't want it. I wish more people would think about going Cruelty-Free and what cosmetics and beauty are and *aren't* worth.
I adore future dew. My make up looks so much better with it on. I have mature skin but it just glows. I also love the red lip gloss. Such a favorite!!! Great video 💗
I also have a hereditary unibro but waxed it into submission during my teenage years. I was pretty cautious, they're still thick, but I kinda wish I still had a bit of the Camila Mendes left about it.
I tried the Skywash orange color liquid eyeshadow and with someone with a deeper skin tone it didn't show up very well. It's a little too light. I'm surprised that you didn't talk about the monochrome powder eyeshadow Amanda. I like those. The stretch concealer is o.k. I like the Cloud Paint blush in red. I have found Glossier at T.J. Maxx. Thanks for the video. 💝
Future Dew I find best if I tap it on while my Skin Tint is a tad moist. Rubbing the serum in changes the look and also when the tackiness begins. Then I powder the T zone.
💖 I can't find anything, cream or liquid, that doesn't look dull on my aging, uber-dry, sensitive skin. Stretch concealer looks chalky, and exacerbates my aging skin's appearance. It's better suited for less dry skin than mine, but Ere Perez arnica concealer looks better, and has a bit more coverage, so if anyone has issues with stretch, perhaps check it out as well? The only things that look glowy on my dry skin are powder products. My skin can't suck up the moisture/hydration, plus they are less like to have castor oil, and its derivatives. Futuredew is off the table because of this inclusion. It would make my skin texture change on contact, causing my pores to become more exagerated, and look dull overall. It's wild what contact reactions can do. Obviously, in addition to that I avoid talc, cones, kaolin, as much as possible. Wish my skin wasn't so temperamental, truly, but you know what doesn't bother me? Coconut oil & its derivatives. Go figure. Oh, tangential, but one product that I am curious if it *might* work as a black honey substitute on some lips is iNNBEAUTY Glaze lip oil in #9/Merlot. Thanks, Amanda!
I really do think the glossier skin tint is undetectable on the skin; it does make you look “better,” but not like you’re wearing even no makeup makeup. The corn oil that’s in it though, broke me out every time I wore it.
Juliette has a Gun “not a perfume” reminds me of You. Also bath and body works “kaleidoscope” (although they seem to have discontinued that). I love that “your skin, but better” kind of smell but it is hard to find.
💕💞💗💞💕 Loved this overview of Glossier. We can’t buy it in Australia, and I’d love to buy Future Dew. Hopefully it might come to Sephora down here too. 🤞🙂
💕love it, thank you! This will save me so much scratch! I have several of the alternatives you mentioned from watching your other videos -like the Merit skin prep and they’re great! Have you tried the Revlon Illuminance Foundation or any of the new Wet and Wild liquid eye shadows or that watery primer? I’d be curious to hear your thoughts. Though I have the Revlon foundation and love it more than any high or low end foundations on my older skin.
The stretch concealer and Future Dew are holy grails for me. The after Baumé and the moisturiser broke out my skin soooo badly though, be warned people
This is the first video with such detailed comparison I watched. Usually, people say oh, I got this new lip oil from XYZ, gorgeous. End of review. 💕 Zero usefulness.
I have the oiliest, driest skin, I don’t get it. I’m super oily in my t zone but so dry and flaky everywhere else no matter what I do. Foundations tend to look very bad on me unless they’re extra hydrating which of course will make me look extra oily after some hours. I have recently discovered that an extra hydrating primer is the key so when I tried that oil primer serum from Glossier in the store I was like this is it! And yes it is, is soooooo good! I love the smell as well, I like it better than the Merit and the Glow recipe. My second favorite from the brand is the round concealer, salvation for this flaky skin

I love the glossier perfume …can’t live without it
💖thank you for doing this!
I got the Future Dew for exactly the reason you suggested--to make matte foundations look right on me--and it's doing the job so well.
I'm just about done with my first bottle of the futuredew it's so amazing. Cannot live without it!
💕absolutely loved the video! I really appreciate all the effort you put in your videos to explain and demonstrate everything!
Loved this video!!!! 💕💕💕💕💕

This was great, and I think the comparison to newer products was excellent.
Love the what to get instead idea. I used to be obsessed with glossier lol and I still like the idea of them, but I’d rather try something else!
💖💕💞💓💗💝as a recent subscriber, I’m in love with all of your video content! Thank you for being so thorough. We need more of you!
I hate to break it to you because it was my favorite fragrance.. but glossier you was reformulated to remove an ingredient that is banned in the eu.. It's not that the ones at Sephora is watered down, it's the new formula that was implemented a while ago 😭
❤ thx so much for the great info!
Ps. HOW WAS VEGAS
Really needed this video! 💓
Lash slick is the perfect mascara for me 😊 also love the lip balm ❤️
💖 REALLY, REALLY loved this video, and love your content in general. Thank you!!!
Thanks for this video Amanda. 💕💓 Always love and appreciate the detail and effort you put into your videos ☺️❤️
💕 just waiting for an even cheaper brand to make a Glossier You dupe … it’s “cheap” compared to other fragrances, but it’s not cheap for me 😅
Mix bar - cloud musk is very close. Same vibe. I actually like it a tiny bit more than You (I own both)
💗 Always love your content, Amanda!
I also have a hereditary unibro but waxed it into submission during my teenage years. I was pretty cautious, they're still thick, but I kinda wish I still had a bit of the Camila Mendes left about it.
💞 I just got Lash Slick in yesterday and have yet to try it. I love a my-lashes-but-better look, so we'll see!
Wow! There's a lot of Glossier I didn't know...btw, I really enjoy wearing the elf lash n roll mascara! 💗
Lovely recs 💕 I have the Chanel one in the bronze color. It's my fave bronzer 💓
🎀 pink bow instead
Love your earrings, shirt, and hairstyle in this video
Great video concept! Would love to see this done for other brands too 💖
Thanks for all your great makeup info! 💞
Future Dew I find best if I tap it on while my Skin Tint is a tad moist. Rubbing the serum in changes the look and also when the tackiness begins. Then I powder the T zone.
I just discovered phlur missing person and had the same excited discovery!
Was hypnotized by your earrings the whole time! Where are they from? Ty ❤️
💓absolutely loveeee your videos, and appreciate your effort
💖 really enjoyed this video!
I really do think the glossier skin tint is undetectable on the skin; it does make you look “better,” but not like you’re wearing even no makeup makeup. The corn oil that’s in it though, broke me out every time I wore it.
Enjoyed as always so so helpful💕
Love this longer videos💕
💕 I wish I would have watched this before ordering from glossier and being really disappointed!
💖 Glad you made this video. Thanks..
Juliette has a Gun “not a perfume” reminds me of You. Also bath and body works “kaleidoscope” (although they seem to have discontinued that). I love that “your skin, but better” kind of smell but it is hard to find.
💕 just commenting cos you’re my fave
💗 Great video once again!
💕💞💗💞💕
Loved this overview of Glossier. We can’t buy it in Australia, and I’d love to buy Future Dew. Hopefully it might come to Sephora down here too. 🤞🙂
Would love to see a comparison between the future dew and the make beauty emulsion! It's the only other product I've seen that looks similar
🩷 love your videos!
We have similar taste in many things.
Thank you for your recommendations 💓
I remember when boy brow had a huge waitlist.
The after Baumé and the moisturiser broke out my skin soooo badly though, be warned people
the only thing i will always buy from glossier is the concealer! maybe the skin tint, but the rest is pretty interchangable w other brands for me
half caked is good too, i like the heart shaped ones, they last a long time. imma get the maybe baby in sync next time💞
💗 grateful for the information
Not me getting scared the perfume is changed. Imma cry if it is 😢
I used to use the stretch concealer blended out in my T zone for no makeup makeup days and it worked that way but not really as a concealer
still can’t access glossier in australia so maybe ill just use some of these alternatives
💝 You're so bloody helpful
💕Really helpful!
