  • In our nation's capital one monument stands above them all: the Washington Monument, the 555-foot-tall marble obelisk whose cornerstone was laid 175 years ago this year. Correspondent Faith Salie examines the twisty tale of the construction of this simple, straightforward spire, its changing design, and how it ended up the perfect expression of what our first president was, and still is, in the minds of the American people.

Beautiful masonic structure. It's situated in such an idealistic location. What a treat to walk up to it, lean on it, see the views from that small hill top especially during the festivals. It has a unique charisma.

@JustiinCase780. No one even QUESTIONS as to how this was constructed in an era of horse drawn carts, and hand tools. Why are there NO progressive construction photos of this enormous national monument even though cameras became quite popular 25 years PRIOR to its alleged completion?

Amazing that the Washington monument history and stories it has in its walls reflects so well this country. It shows struggles, different ways of protest, of people complaining for economic, social or political reasons, for racial equality, for rights, for the different things that still to this day fills our political discussions… but it was built, like this nation, it was built on top of all those. Courage, leadership, and hard work… the essence of America. What a symbolism.

The very tip of it has an aluminum pyramid that was cast at a considerable cost- several thousand dollars back then because it was cast at a time when they didn't know HOW to make aluminum from the bauxite ore like we do now with far cheaper easier processes, it was more valuable than platinum at the time! there were engravings on the piece as well. The original I think was removed to a glass case inside and a replica returned to the original's vacated location, there are pictures and the complete story on the web.

The age of presidential monuments seems to be over, at least on this scale. No unanimity over choice, political infighting, endless controversies & objections from various groups, etc., would thwart any attempts. Beyond this reality, though, few ever are likely to measure up to Washington in our own time or the foreseeable future.
