Many thousands of those grand old "potted motor" Singers (1200, 201-2, 15-91, etc. Can be saved!!) I've 👀 seen some pretty nasty looking old "Gals" that you would swear are already in the grave, be SAVED after only a few days of work by a skilled, experienced craftsman! And those old 20's, 30's, 40's and 50's sewing machines WERE MADE TO LAST SEVERAL LIFETIMES, if taken care off!
Few folks even know that Singer made and sold it's first electric powered machine in 1889!!!!
But also sold treadle machines right up to the 1960's!
My own Sister made her own wedding dress, in 1983, on a 60+ year old treadle machine! We still own both.
Excellent advice on the wiring and the eyelet trick at the end is something I will be showing everybody in my theater special FX group. :)
One bit of general advice: when lubricating the cords to go through the grommet use dish soap, rather than some grease which might not be good for the insulation. Since you are working on sewing machines you probably have some light weight oil that would be safe enough, dish soap is always safe enough.
I would also tie a knot in the cord as the original had to strain relieve the connections, although it is hard to imagine something snagging the wire while the motor is mounted on the machine.
I didnt tie a knot in the motor because I wasnt done with it quit yet :p but your right its a good idea and I forgot that in the video. Far as the the oil I used to slick up the cable it was triflow, It does not eat plastics rubbers or nylons and is very safe to use.

Thanks for showing how to make diy connector rings.A good and simple solution I wish I had known many machines ago.
Thats how ive always done it and thats how they used to always do it in the 20-60's way better then crimp connectors. And considerably safter they wont ever vibrate out of your crimp and make the machine live.

Good thing is most of these old sewing machines only pull a few amps so it most likely won't kill you but it will hurt 😞 as a kid I found out the hard way 😂

This is the most helpful video of wiring a sewing machine motor that I've seen. I do have one question --- I will have to buy wire for the .9 amp motor on my vintage Singer. What size should I buy?
I cheat and Used old Ac cables for computers. But any Ac wire at the hardware store rated for 2amp or greater would work. "aka Appliance wire"

Hey no problem buddy. The loop would hook up to the power block on the side of the machine.
In your opinion; should you rewire the light while you’re at it. I have a 201.
Just depends. But if the wire on the motor is crunchy then most likely the wire on the light will be too. So I would.
Hello, I have a 15-91 that I 've stripped down ,rewired ,repainted, re-assembled. Except when I move the hand wheel the stitch regulator moves. I can't figure out what's wrong . Might you know what I'm doing wrong. Love watching you work. I learn so much. Thanks.
Not sure on that one. Ive never stripped one all the way down. Wonder if theres a tenstion nut on the lever insde.

I thank you for your posts, they are very helpful, i am wondering if the item 67683/terminal and connector 150pc. set is the appropriate ring connector for connecting to the motor on a singer 15-91? the ring connector is missing on a few of them wires, and i could use your advice please!?
I usally dont use connectors at all I twist the wires and solder them to make them into connectors. Its the same thing they did 100 years ago all the way up til the 70's 80's. The wire wont break like terminal connectors can do. Im not going to say dont use connectors def a good alternative if you dont know how to solder Just make sure there thick and not super cheap. Reason why you see a lot of terminal connectors from the 80's on is because its quick vs twisting and soldering.
Excellent video! You saved me. Just bought a 15-91. I knew it needed to be rewired but after seeing this video I took the motor off...All bare wires. I'm still working on the trick you did looping the wire. What kind of grease do you use for the motor. I've heard petroleum jelly..not buying it! melts down. Any advice would help.
We use Triflow grease its pretty good stuff.
Hi do you know anything about the singer machines that have a suppressor wired in ?
My 1951 singer has the BRK12-S motor but also this suppressor thing.
If its that one that has a big resistor in the line for High Low speeds Im not a fan of that system at all. Since it just starves the motor for power to control the speed.

Do you have a video on rewiring a foot controller?
I don't. Mainly because rheostat style pedeals usally only have two wires and there pretty simple to rewire. But Next time my Kenmore pedal needs the carbon piles cleaned and serviced Ill make a video of it. Maybe it will help people understand how they work and how simple they really are.
what solder tool do you buy and is that from Harbor Freight also?
No it is not. My job involves a lot of soldering that iron is a chinese 220v aoyue brand 1200 watt iron. How ever I do like the red ISO-TIP 7971 Pro 50 iron it works well too considerably better then the 20 dollar 15 watt irons that will do nothing but get ya in trouble with poor solder joints.
can you use a 3 wire to these moters ?
I suppose you could but I would use 2 wire personally.

Its a Chinese Aoyue that I imported from china to do my real day job. But you can find high quality irons at hardware stores for wiring that work good the old Wellers work good for wires, The one with the wire tip that are around 1000 watts.

No clue I dont think ive ever tried or had both machines side by side.
How do I rewire the wall plug cord? I have the exposed metal parts.

Followed video perfectly and there is no power getting to the motor. Rewired the pedal, still no power. Changed plugs and pedal, still no power. How do I know if this motor is simply burnt out or done??
You can ohm out the commentators to see if youve got a broken winding. You should get a low reading of you do this with a good meter. But youll have to make sure you getting both sides of the windings to make sure. Should be contacts on the commentators that are 180 degrees apart so directly across. And check the windings in the housing as well. I would imagine if you do have bad windings its probably the ones in the housing not the ones connecting to the commentators. And usally you can see a set of windings the wire insolation cooked off too.
I can't get the flat heads off the transfer case. I tried a few times, but I'm starting to strip out the heads. I'm gonna pick up penetrating oil, but what do I do if that doesn't work?
When steel and alum are together sometimes they seize. you can always try a hammer driver instead of a standard screw driver. Thats what I use. You can buy them from harbor freight fairly cheap and well worth the money. Make sure you read the instructions before you use one.

Your best bets are ebay, Etsy, or Bonanza. You can also try some of the vintage sewing machine Facebook groups.

Is it safe to use 18 gauge speaker wire with copper strands ?
I would not use speaker wire. As one side is usually copper and the other side is not or is tinned copper. Plus the strands are very fine vs AC wire. Hit the hardware store the wire is very cheap. Or hit a computer shop you can get wire there pretty cheap too.

Several of my male friends that ware "nail polish" do it to protect their nails from thr damage that can occur as they play. Steel strings. My nylon string acoustic guitar is a lot easier on my nails!
