The calculus, differential equations, analytic geometry, and dozens of shortcuts are just the tip of the mathematical iceberg we were taught. To quote Mark Twain: eschew surplusage.

what I do is multiply the biggest number by other digit and estimate it to closest 10. That is I do 14×10 and then multiple 14×2 and then add. so it comes 140+28=168 in matter of 3-4 seconds. I am sure many people use this approach

As a Pakistani I would simply multiply 14 by 10 which would give me 140 then multiply 14 by 2 and add it 140. 14 x2 =28. 140+28=168.
