- The first of the series, but not the first short with these characters.
DISCLAIMER: This video is intended for adult viewers. The content in this video showcases an obscure piece of animation from decades ago that only adults (especially film/media collectors) would understand. As such, the cartoon presented in this video is a product of its time, whether through its depiction of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American Society during the Golden Age of Hollywood, or the references to violence, death and suicide. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today which, in combination with the recent changes in UA-cam policy, now must be emphasized that children under 13 should not be watching this video, let alone have an account to watch these videos with. The Child Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) has made it illegal to collect personal data on children younger than age 13, which many websites from Facebook to UA-cam have been doing anyway, and that is why I am typing this to cement the understanding that I only upload content that I conclude animation fans and/or film/media collectors aged 18 or above would find interesting.

The sheer sadism inflicted on the hapless Katnip is unlike anything else in Golden Age toons. Tom got his fair share of licks in against Jerry, but Katnip only existed to be tortured by Herman. The prototypes for Itchy and Scratchy.
While Tom and Jerry was only famous for it's constant slapstick with it's wildtakes and constant screamings of Tom and Jerry never was really that mean to Tom,Herman and Katnip was far worse than T&J because most of the cartoons involved putting shock humor and verbal assualt by having Katnip realistically tortured,blown-up,having his head cut off,chopped up in half,and eventually shot to death by a gun. I can see where Matt Groening got the inspiration for Itchy and Scratchy in The Simpsons.
Well Katnip kind deserve it too given quite a few ep start with him having already eaten several other mice.
I get the impression Irv Spector really loved writing morbid cartoons! We get a ending with a character committing suicide in "Winner by a Hare" for instance.
One of the classic Tom & Jerry cartoons also had Tom going to hell as punishment for bullying Jerry. Why punish cats for their natural behavior? Cats want to catch and eat rodents even when they live with humans and have food at home.
This doesn't seem like much of a holiday to me.
1. Cousin Hoyman looks like he belongs to a different species from the other mice. 2. How many mice live in this house, any way? Sometimes you see five, then you see a lot more. 3. Apparently Katnip doesn't know what vinegar tastes like. 4. "No wings for you, cat. For you, the fiery foynace!" 5. "You will be sent back to oyth to atone for your sins against the mice."

No. But Ive always believed itchy&scratchy were more Herman&Catnip than Tom&Jerry. Herman was always so much more the aggressor than Jerry.

Goddammit I used to hate those mouse characters. This was the only episode I had as a child on a VHS, and everytime I watched it, I felt an urge to crush Herman into a pile of gore.

Christopher Sobieniak Hopefully, when the owners of the house return and find out that the filthy rodents infesting their house have also killed their cat, they capture all the mice and kill them all, saving Herman for the last...
Vumpalouska It's kinda weird that wasn't Herman at the end who twisted the barrel of the gun around the way they showed it.

Probably would've been better to stick grapes in the barrels.
This is similar to the Tom and Jerry short "Heavenly Puss".
I haven't this in years until i found these on UA-cam n today their still funny to watch.
i can see they really, really try to have what tom & jerry and looney tunes was having at the time but it just isn't the same. on one note, it's sometimes too obnoxious and childish (what T&J and LT wasn't), and on other note, it's also sometimes too mean and dark, it's like it doesn't know what to be. also this plot was recycled from previous cartoon shorts, but wasn't improved (which is the only way recycling a plot that much, can be good). I'd blame mainly the dialogue, too much unnecessary dialogue makes it too obnoxious and slow. T&J and LT were fast paced and dynamic

Strangely enough. They've made a parody of Tom and Jerry (and somewhat Itchy and Scratchy) called "Sleazy and Cheezy".
