  • In this episode of Fresh Tracks Season 8, Randy Newberg is joined by lifelong and childhood friend Jerry Pritchard. Having talked for many years about doing a hunt like this, the time has finally come. They link up in southern Arizona in search of the Whitetail subspecies: Coues Deer.
Ditching his bow for a rifle, Randy hopes this trip to Arizona can be more fruitful than his annual archery coues deer hunt. The plan is simple: hike up to the best glassing knob in the area and glass glass glass. They stick with their game plan and continue to move to different areas as they struggle to find any bucks.
Having seen plenty of does, they are encouraged nonetheless. As they continue being diligent and hunting hard they start spotting more and more bucks. Eventually they are presented with a couple good opportunities on nice mature bucks; one being deemed as the buck they went there for.

You know you're watching a great show when you don't get to see them being able to harvest an animal but you still enjoyed watching the video. Nicely done sir, nicely done. 🖒

Randy you always speak highly of your friends you hunt with and that’s very humble of you. Thanks for another wonderful video. Soaking up the wisdom you guys give like a sponge. It’s comforting to see someone appreciate the gift we have here that makes us the richest people alive, and to appreciate it more and more as the years go on,

Love it. I lost my Dad to brain cancer ~5 years ago now and that statement about treating each other like family and you looking out for him after his Dad died really got to me. I met you once Randy, @ Gerber when my ex-wife worked there and while I was doing some Knife-testing for them (my background is in Wilderness Medicines/teaching and Emergency Services). You were a very kind and personable guy back then and I remember that little back-country education class you gave them to this day. I'm glad to see you thriving and doing well and especially glad you're able to share your knowledge with others through various platforms. Best to you mate, cheers from the PNW.

Hunting is about who you hunt with and the love of the outdoors. The actual getting what your hunting is a blessing to be thankful for.

Oh, I was ready. It takes time to get the camera focused and our requirement for ten seconds of pre-shot focus. Our camera guys are great and to amazing work. Sometimes the animals don't follow the script.

Mr. Newberg, thank you for the videos. Do you recommend a rifle barrel length in the .308 cal. For hunting. I have always relied on the 24 inch barrel length because of all the reloading manuals base their groups on that length. I a now look to a 22 inch barrel. I sure would like your thoughts on this.

Nice to see some mountains I recognize. I grew up working on that ranch in the Northern part of the unit. I took several nice Coues bucks there. Seems like you were down in mule deer country and needed a little more elevation.
