The eruption of Mount Dukono nearly destroyed dozens of climbers

Indonesia, North Maluku, - Mount Dukono, one of Indonesia's most active volcanoes, erupted today, sending a plume of volcanic ash approximately 600 to 700 meters into the sky. The sudden eruption almost endangered the lives of dozens of hikers.
In videos circulating on social media, the hikers were seen enjoying the scenic views of Mount Dukono. However, their moment of tranquility was abruptly interrupted by a loud rumble, followed by an eruption and a cloud of volcanic ash.
Fearing for their safety, the hikers quickly descended the mountain and took shelter at a safer distance. Meanwhile, the local Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has issued a warning to residents and tourists, urging them to avoid any activities within a 2 to 3-kilometer radius of the volcano.
Local officials admitted they were unaware that hikers had attempted to reach the summit of Dukono. It is suspected that these hikers climbed the mountain on August 17th to celebrate Indonesia's 79th Independence Day.
The current eruption still poses a serious threat, especially with the possibility of further volcanic activity. "We urge the public to stay away from the danger zone. Volcanic ash can be hazardous to health, and there is also a risk of lava flows or more intense eruptions," said Hentje Hetharian, Head of the North Halmahera BPBD.
Mount Dukono, located in North Halmahera, has been in a state of continuous eruption since the 1930s. It is known for its frequent and often unpredictable volcanic activity, making it a popular, albeit risky, destination for adventurers and nature enthusiasts.
The eruption has also led to the temporary closure of hiking routes to Mount Dukono, with authorities prioritizing the safety of visitors.
