Bulldogs should play finals this year with that list and all their top ten packs

Bailey Dale almost killed the hawks on his own last week. He’s definitely still a dangerous doggie

Agree with your assessment of the list. I don’t think Bevo is the right person to carry the dogs to a future final though. He’s too one dimensional. There is no plan b on game day and he’s too stubborn to change strategy when they need to. The example I like to use with him is the whole standing on the mark strategy they used when it was introduced. Bevo persisted for over a year before giving up when it was clear it wasn’t working. If you can’t tell it’s not working in a month, you’re not adapting. He single handedly took a lot of pressure off opponents which resulted in losses on close games.

    I'm a Dogs fan -
I think if you took the previous 10 years at the Dogs, there are probably 12 or 13 other clubs that would take it ahead of their own previous 10 years. The only exceptions would be Hawthorn, Richmond, Geelong and Collingwood. Maybe Sydney but they haven't won a premiership in that time and have lost two grand finals.
Our club suffers from unrealistic expectations, both positively and negatively. The issue I think stems from this. Our expectations grow when we exceed the expectations (2016 winning the premiership, 2019 and 2020 making finals with a bottom 6 aged group and 2021 making a grand final) but our expectations don't reduce when we maybe don't hit the targets we think we should (2017 missing the finals, 2022 losing the elimination final to Fremantle and 2023 missing the finals).
Is the list as good as everyone thinks it is? No it's not. Do we have some of the best players in the league? Yes we do. Our list is as unbalanced as peoples expectations of what the list should achieve.

The call for sacking bevo is down to game style, we play a high hand ball game then just bomb in the 50 expecting the big boys to mark it every time.
If they don’t mark it we get transitioned on easily and refuse to defend. The players as a majority seem to be one way runners.
Additionally to this the team selections call are baffling, if they pay off I’ll take my hat off to him, largely over the past 3 seasons they haven’t paid off.
Playing players out of position irritates me as well, then you get situations like Caleb Daniel and jack macrae.
Lastly this is an issue with the club as a whole, mixed messaging. The higher up board and directors speak publicly about the strength of the list and competing.
In preseason bevo aligns his views with the board and basically says we’re a team to challenge. We then play a few rounds, play poorly and suddenly we’re rebuilding?
If we’re rebuilding, why bring in experienced role players, when a young player could be gaining experience and playing that role.
I love the dogs but the club is a mess

Good analysis, well done. I think you've tried to debunk a lot of the hysteria about their list and it being "stacked" and ready to go. Really good representations of juxtaposed stats across the board versus performance too, which compliments your list/ team in transition views as well. Thanks for going to the effort.

I think Bevo sees out the season and it's entirely on him whether he goes on or not (results based)
I agree dogs are in transition currently, sort of rebuilding on the go

Great analysis! As a dogs fan myself, the major frustration with Bevo is purely game day selection. More importantly the fact his playing our players in their non-preferred positions. E.g. decision to put Richard’s in the mid/forward line when his one of our best defencers and even champion data had him 7th most impactful defender. It’s these decisions that have got fans really questioning bevo (not to mention having our long contract players playing in VFL).

Whats ironic is most fans hate that their coach doesnt move a player around when they arent traveling to well. Try a couple of things for example McRae doesn't move Degoey forward. While Bevo moves players out of position when they are doing well like you mentioned. he does left of Field moves and rejects peoples common sense moves like potentially moving Naughton back. Its really bizarre.

We have played finals nearly every year for the last 8 years two grandfinals in 5 years one premiership with a side that noone rates at the start of each season ? Hello space cadets

2 Grand Finals in 6 years, and the less said about the latter one the better. Jessie makes some good points about the current state of the list, but few would argue that the Dogs have been disappointing since their breakthrough flag in 2016. Most of the finals appearances you mention were at the lower end of the 8 and involved being thrashed and eliminated in week 1. Not 1 top 4 finish since he has been there in 2015 says it all.

The media and Kane Cornes in particular have a lot to answer for. Cornes has pushed this agenda to have Bevo fired ever since Luke called him out after the 2021 Prelim. Cornes is always the loudest person in the room and unfortunately people listen to his tripe and take it as gospel. Your analysis was fair and well thought out. One thing I would suggest is that stats aren't everything. Bailey Dale, Bailey Williams, Caleb Daniel, JJ and Jack Macrae are players in particular who have no trouble getting the ball and even disposing of it well but their team defence leaves a lot to be desired. Media types like Kane will continually say that the Dogs cant defend or stop momentum and a lot of the time its these players who are at the centre of this defensive malaise. When Beveridge drops them or makes them the sub, these same media types then get stuck into him for not playing his "best" players...damned if he does, damned if he doesn't...If anyone wants to know why Caleb Daniel is still playing reserves, go back and watch the game against the Cats. Gryan Miers absolutely tore the Dogs to bits with his gut running, offensive output and defensive pressure, guess who his direct opponent was?

Great analysis, personally dont see overly wrong with the Dogs but just need to tighten up their defence and ball movement 👍
Would love to see you do something similar for the Crows

Bringing in Rory Lobb was the most unnecessary trade in recent years. Not disrespecting him, he just never fitted into the team which is already filled with talls. Guarantee he will leave at year's end.

Not all coaches can do the Kevin Sheedy and it's best despite what is said about stats or playing list, for a coach to depart after 10 seasons and keep it fresh. But I feel they need more attendance support above anything consistently from now on.

Pretty damn good analysis. There’s clearly a divide between the older midfield and the super young forward line, and by the time Darcy, Ugle-Hagan, Weightman are all at their peaks Bontempelli is probably the only midfielder of the current group who will still be there. That’s why Sanders will be important, and they need to find another under-25 midfielder or two (McCluggage is 26, but he’d be awesome).
However, I do think you failed to mention that Beveridge seems to be more of a motivational coach, a Monday-Friday coach if you will, than a tactician; he often gets out coached on game day, and doesn’t seem to know what levers to pull to arrest the opposition’s momentum, nor do he and his assistant coaches seem to know how to make the necessary mid-match adjustments to cover the in-game losses of players like Liberatore and Weightman-essentially, if one or two players go down, they fall apart. Compare this with Geelong, who lose Tom Stewart at halftime of the Brisbane game to concussion, but then throw Zack Guthrie into that position and still win the game; then the cats lose Dangerfield to a hamstring just before three-quarter time against Carlton, and they still get up and win. Chris Scott and his team always seem to have a plan B, C and D, whereas Beveridge is all-in on plan A.

    DOGGIES SHOULD BE COMPETING

  • @chucklauber9914
    @chucklauber9914 4 місяці тому +3

You did a really good job honing in on that challenges the Doggies face in the near term. Nobody is saying the quiet part out loud (though you did make mention of it)...but there appear to be a small handful of established players the organization is keen on trading... as well as some out of form players they have demoted but intend on keeping. The younger players that have filled in on the senior squad have a lot of talent, but can be hot or cold from game to game. It's easy to point blame at Bevo (and roster moves like Richards are baffling)... but there are deeper transition issues going on here. I'm really afraid Libba is done for his career... and that's going to be a really diffcult hole to fill this year.

Fantastic analysis as usual, I feel they should demand 2 x 1st and 1 x 3rd for Bailey. Not sure that West Coadt will take English, we already have Flynn, Williams + a few other young ones. Lobb will be the interesting one, whether you could get anything for him.
Are the Bulldogs in the process of changing their game style and like West Coast waiting for it to click.
The other elephant in the room is If you sack Bevo who do you replace him with, at least West Coast has knights n Schofield

  • @kraxos239

Doggies fan here. The short handball game is predictable and other clubs now the handballs will only be short ones and not spread from congestion ones. We also bomb the ball into forward line. The zoning defense is old now. Beveridge makes weird game day selections bramble harmes mcneil shouldnt be given games ahead of sanders mcrae.
On Johannisens stats are only good cause he takes kickouts and is a handball receiver. He rarely defends 1 vs 1 or gets hardball thats why Beveridge was trying to play him forward of centre to hide deficiencies but he just cant play anywhere else.

  • @Bornadog

Thanks for the analysis, pretty much spot on. There is a gap between the experienced players ie players with 150 games plus and games under 50. We have a middle group that is non-existent and this could probably come down to the fact we had to give up alot for Marra, Darcy, in those years and therefore lack of draft picks. Each week we have played 8 players with less than 50 games and only 2 between 50 to 100 games.
The Bevo talk by the media is a joke and the club needs to assess after the last round of the year, not 8 games in. FFS, we just did a huge review of the footy dept and put in a new structure, new assistants and ramped up development. We now have the best facilities in the AFL and record membership - the future looks bright
